1 SUMMER EDITION ST. JOHN IN THE WILDERNESS CHURCH 2896 LAKESHORE Doors Open St. John in the Wilderness Anglican Church was asked by Doors Open Lambton to par?cipate as a site for 2016 and your council chose to go forward with this event. In prepara?on for this some of our historical items from Lambton County Archives were borrowed and items and descrip?ons represen?ng our various groups and ac?vi?es were displayed on tables. Appropriate music was provided and some of our yearly church cleaning was done. Doors Open was held on Saturday and Sunday, June 11th and 12th from 10 a.m. un?l 4 p.m. Response from the public was wonderful, our guests did not simply walk through but showed great interest in our history and ac?vi?es. Many men?oned that they did not realize that we were open let alone held services with a choir. They commented that we are a very ac?ve church. The Serenity Garden We greeted about 275 guests within the two days. This surpassed our expecta?ons which lep our volunteers stretched thin, yet we managed to speak with most. This is something to note should we decide to par?cipate again in Doors Open Lambton Those who volunteered felt that it was a very worthwhile event. The first Parish register Many thanks to Rev. Kim+, The Altar Guild, Mavis Schmid, BeVy Greening, Sylvia Greenaway, Sandra Fraser, Brenden Fraser, Marie & Jim Foubister, Nancy & Duncan Mann and Mike McAlpine. Yours in Christ, Janice McAlpine Doors open to the sanctuary

2 ACW Calling all Anglican Church Women!! On Tuesday, September 6th we will be having our first mee?ng aper the summer break. Though we have a wonderful core group of approximately twelve at our mee?ngs, we welcome with open arms any new members. We present opportuni?es for prayer, Bible study, learning new things, (I don't know how else to say that), guest speakers and delicious refreshments. So, c'mon along and join us in the parish hall at 1:00 on the sixth! BAPTISM On June 12, Helena Anne Stone, daughter of Greg & Heather Stone was baptized. Helena is the sister of Meron and Lorelai and the granddaughter of Ian and Lyn Kidd. Greetings from the Choir! During the summer months, the choir takes Monday nights off, to allow the group to enjoy the great summer weather. However, come September, we will be back at it Monday nights at 7:15 preparing for a rapidly approaching Christmas. (Scary to think about in August). As always, new voices are always welcome; the only requirement is a bit of effort and a willingness to learn. The first half of 2016 has been great and we are excited to keep it going in the fall! Yours in song, Brenden Fraser Counters Report Thank you to all the Counters who carry on the good work of tallying the Sunday offerings. It is an important job. We welcome anyone who might like to join us.work condi?ons are good and training is gladly given. Please contact me if interested. Respecgully Mavis Schmid Partners in Prayer Our group met weekly from November un?l the end of June to pray for guidance and the needs of our church, the congrega?on, community, diocese, country as well as worldly concerns. God s Blessings and Peace Janice McAlpine Pastoral Care The ministry of your Pastoral Care Team consis?ng of Pastor Kim, Sandra Fraser, Nancy Mann, Anne Toth and Janice McAlpine con?nues with God s guidance. Pastoral Care is provided in hospital, home, office and by phone when required. If you know of anyone who would appreciate a visit please contact Pastor Kim. Yours in Christ, Janice McAlpine

3 Treasurer s Report Opera?ng revenue YTD is $73, Envelope contribu?ons are 96% of plan, and all other revenues are tracking on budget. Opera?ng expenses are $ and there are no surprise expenditures to report. This results in an opera?ng deficit YTD of $ which is normal for this?me of year as we have met our yearly financial obliga?on to the diocese. Our Outreach dona?ons based on our criteria is on budget at $ Dona?ons towards our renova?ons are $ Dave Hains Outreach This year we sent bales to Kingfisher, ON instead of Kenora, ON. They were sent through our Bright s Grove post office and using our postal discount card they were shipped priority mail. Altogether we sent 1033lb or 469 kg of clothing and items. May God bless those who receive these items. Yours in Christ, Nancy Mann 160th Anniversary St. John in the Wilderness has been in this spot for 160 years; 1856 to For this anniversary a commivee was formed made up of Judith Bond, Sandra Fraser, Mavis Schmid, Lyn Kidd, Hazel Millholland, BeVy Greening, Rev. Kim and Ellena, Duncan and Nancy Mann. We made crosses that were given out. Duncan had the history booklet updated and sold them for $3. Copies are s?ll available if interested. We had a plaque made with all the names of those on the grave stones in the Serenity Garden. Carl Schmid craped it and Mavis and Lyn researched the names. Bishop Bob BenneV dedicated it on June 19, 2016, which was also our Pot Luck Lunch. Rev. Kim and Ellena Houston organized old pictures of people and events and had them con?nuously play on a screen. We read History Moments of the church on four Sundays which involved Henry Jones R. N., our founder, ministers that served here, memorial items, and Harry Greening s personal memories. Judith organized memory cards of our parishoners. In all we had a great?me celebra?ng our 160th anniversary. Yours in Christ, Nancy Mann St. John in the Wilderness 1856 St. John in the Wilderness 2016

4 News from the Rector s Office Good day everyone. What a beau1ful and yet very dry summer we are experiencing this year. I have just returned from holidays to the west and truly enjoyed myself with my family. The one thing I realized as we travelled, was that we each took on a job that we were good at, and we did it each day, which made our travelling so much more enjoyable. I think within the church that is why we do so well here. We all use the gics we have been blessed with and work quite well as a team. This year we have made the decision to work towards fulfilling two parts of our Vision statement in a tangible way. To show a welcoming, visible sign of Christ in a growing community, and to strive to meet the spiritual needs of everyone in a facility which is accessible, safe, environmentally friendly, and addresses the space requirements of all. Environmentally Friendly Thanks to Bob and Susan Halliday who have commiled to looking at what we do environmentally at St. John s and to work towards Greening our Sacred Space. The decision was made to make our church more eco- friendly by elimina1ng the use of all Styrofoam products since Styrofoam is not biodegradable and it lasts forever in the landfills. A gentle reminder, we do have a blue box and it is found near the door going to the outdoors in the kitchen. Next to Address the space requirements of all Thanks to all the work by Brian Fogg and the CHAIR commilee, the congrega1on has voted to move ahead with the renova1ons to the church to provide a sacristy for the Altar Guild and to move the office to a new space, where the counters will be able to go on Sunday mornings and will not be disturbed or have to worry about privacy issues. The kitchen will be revamped to make it easier to work in, safer and up to code. Thanks to the fun- raising efforts of the Anglican Church Women. Beehive Renova1ons, Bear Creek Cabinetry and Karl and Mavis Schmid will be doing the work in their perspec1ve areas to make our dreams come true. We will need volunteers to help with removing the items from the kitchen, like pots and pans, etc. and to empty the office along with filling holes and pain1ng the new sacristy. If you have some extra space in your garage for some of the above items for about 4-6 weeks please speak with Brian Fogg or Kim+. It is exci1ng 1mes at St. John in the Wilderness. We have celebrated 160 years and we give thanks for those men and women who came before us, who were faithful to the Lord. We give the Lord thanks since he has been so faithful and generous with us over the years. May we con1nue to bear witness for Jesus Christ our Lord in our words and ac1ons! Yours in Christ s service, Kim+ Rev. Kim Metelka, Rector, pastor and friend.
