2 Ohio United resbyterian Church Rev. Nick Marlatt, astor 1236 Longvue Avenue Aliquippa, ennsylvania In 1799, the Flaugherty's Run congregation was established with William Wilson serving as the itinerant minister of Ohio and two other congregations. Services were held at the houses and the barns of various members and later, in a semi-permanent tent. By 1827 part of the Flaugherty's Run congregation had split and established residence in what was then known as Scottsville, now a part of Hopewell Township. In 1831 a permanent wood frame church was built at the corner of Longvue and Maratta Roads, across the street from the current building in the cemetery, by the members of the Associate Congregation of Ohio as the church was then known. The name Ohio comes from the proximity of the church to the Ohio River and the importance the river played in the economy and lives of the people who lived in the area at the time. When the Associate resbyterian Church and the Reformed resbyterian Church joined in 1858, the Associate Congregation of Ohio became officially known as the United resbyterian Church of Ohio. The church experienced enormous growth and changed its name to the Ohio United resbyterian Church by the 1950's. It was at this time that Rev. James Adair came to the pulpit. Originally hired by the Board of American (National) Missions of the United resbyterian Church of North America, Reverend Adair was a full time stated supply minister until March 11, 1957, when he was installed as Ohio U Church s first permanent minister. Under his loving and knowledgeable guidance the church blossomed, growing from 115 members in 1950 to 800 members in 1969 when Rev. Adair left the church. The current brick building was erected in 1954 and the education wing was added in Ohio U Church History and Directions age 1 of 2 age 1 of 35

3 The church had four different ministers between 1970 and 1981 when Reverend Don Hurray was installed. Reverend Hurray served the church until During his ministry, both First United resbyterian Church (1986) and Woodlawn United resbyterian Church (1995) in Aliquippa closed and many members joined the Ohio Church. The handicapped ramp on the front of the building was added in 1991 and Rev. Hurray also served as a chaplain to the Hopewell Township olice Department. This resulted in Rev. Hurray counseling many of the families, personnel and volunteers who helped at the crash of US Air Flight 427. Reverend Hurray left Ohio Church in 1995 and Reverend Gary Coppedge served as the interim until 1997 when Reverend Timothy (Ted) Dennis was called. Reverend Dennis served the Ohio Church until he resigned in Reverend Nick Marlatt was called and ordained in September Directions to Ohio United resbyterian Church From Beaver, New Brighton, Beaver Falls and points north take I-376 South to the Aliquippa Exit, exit 45. THY KINGDOM COME SEEKING GOD S KINGDOM TOGETHER RESBYTERY REFLECTIONS: John 1:35-39 and Matthew 25:31-40 were shared (recited in story-telling mode) by the Rev. Dr. William Jackson, who then offered a homily. He told about listening to a politician on TV who said, I try to be a Matthew 25 Christian, and of reading about Jackie Robinson s faith and his impact on sports. Both persons were raised and nurtured as Christians, and learned to take Jesus seriously. Both of our Gospel readings resonate the call to us to take Jesus seriously, and to accept His invitation to Come and see. When we respond to His invitation, we become agents of Christ s invitation being extended to others. Through us, they are able to see Jesus.
