(Raymond Bennett), Abstract: This collection contains material related to the career of Raymond B. Bragg, a prominent Unitarian minister of the 20 th century. Included are the materials from local organizations he was involved in, his ecclesiastical research, personal writings, newspaper clippings, humanist journals, and records and correspondence from the various positions he held throughout his career. In addition, there is a large collection of sermons written by Bragg, primarily from his time as minister at Church in Missouri. Bragg Papers can be found in the following collections: Leon Milton Birkhead Papers (K0280) Processed by: Processed by Mimi Loran, January 2018 Historical Note: Raymond Bennett Bragg was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in He excelled at sports and attended Bates College and then Brown University. While at Brown, he was introduced to Unitarian ideas and philosophies and eventually converted to Unitarianism. Bragg then enrolled in Meadville Theological School to pursue his growing ecclesiastical interests and graduated in Bragg began his career in 1927 as the pastor for the in Evanston, Illinois. In 1930, Bragg then became the Executive Secretary of the Western Unitarian Conference, an organization centered in the central part of the United States, with the aim of assisting Unitarian congregations. Bragg was very interested in humanist philosophies, and attempted to incorporate them into his sermons and teachings. Bragg helped to draft the Humanist Manifesto I, which gained 34 signatures and was published in the New Humanist magazine in During this time, Bragg traveled extensively through Europe, specifically Germany, and witnessed the rise of Nazism. In 1935, Bragg married a woman from Germany, Ilse Meyn, whom he would remain married to for the rest of his life. Together they would have two daughters, Susan and Kate. In 1935, Raymond and Ilse traveled from Germany to Bragg s new position as Associate Pastor of the of Minnesota. In 1947, Bragg and his family moved to Boston where Bragg became Executive Director of the Unitarian Service Committee, a branch of the American Unitarian Association. This position and institution organized relief efforts around the world, but at this time specifically focused on those affected by WWII in Europe. In 1952, Bragg left the Unitarian Service Committee and took the position of pastor at Unitarian in Missouri, a position he held until he retired. Under Bragg s leadership, the congregation saw increased numbers, received the funds to construct a new building, and began youth education efforts. While pastor in he helped to found the Kansas City Civil Liberties Union and was actively involved in several public service organizations. Bragg retired in 1973, and died six years later in Kansas City. Arrangement: The collection has been arranged into the following ten series with eighteen subseries: Personal

Included are biographical items for Bragg and Ilse along with term papers from when Bragg was attending Meadville Theological School. The Correspondence subseries includes personal writing between Bragg, parishioners, and fellow pastors throughout his career. Included in this subseries are some individual groups of correspondence between Bragg and prominent members of the Unitarian community, including Powell Davies, Dale DeWitt, Frederick Eliot, and many others. In addition, there are scrapbooks that document Bragg s career and personal life, and a Photographs subseries, which include images throughout Bragg s life. Of particular interest is the subseries on Meadville Theological School, which Bragg was a board member of for several years. Included in this subseries is a history of the school, board minutes, and correspondence related to the academic accomplishments of those attending, and disputes between students and faculty.

Bragg Papers Page 4 Ecclesiastical Research This series consists of materials that were collected by Bragg throughout his career, that were presumably used by Bragg for sermon writing and for general ecclesiastical study. This series includes religious writings by Bragg, and by other prominent religious figures of his day, a variety of both Unitarian and humanist journals and clippings, and also information on events and individuals that Bragg found to be potentially religiously important. This series contains orders of service for the years that Bragg was pastor at the congregation. An order of service is a pamphlet, given to a parishioner during a service so that they may follow along with the service. Information in an order of service includes dates and times of service, name of the pastor giving the service, bible reading for the week, title of sermon, and weekly announcements. Western Unitarian Conference The Western Unitarian Conference was an association of Unitarian churches in the Ohio River and Mississippi River valleys. The Western Unitarian Conference provided assistance and occasional ministerial support to the associated churches, as well as holding an annual conference for the Unitarian churches. This series contains information regarding the annual conferences this institution held as well as correspondence to and from Bragg regarding his work with associated congregations. This series contains records and materials related to the of Minnesota. Included is a history of the congregation, financial information of the congregation, orders of service, and correspondence to and from Bragg. American Unitarian Association This series contains records and correspondence related to this organization. The American Unitarian Association (AUA) was the national organization that oversaw the Unitarian denomination throughout the United States and Canada. Included are the records of the Executive Board, committee reports, and ministry handbooks. Of particular interest are records and correspondence related to talks and voting leading up to the Unitarian and Universalist merger in Unitarian Service Committee This series contains the records directly related to this branch of the American Unitarian Association and the work that Bragg was doing for the American Unitarian Association. Included is correspondence and reports, and information on his resignation. This series contains papers and records related to of Missouri, and Bragg s career there, including the history of the congregation, board records, the weekly

The Correspondence subseries includes correspondence to and from Bragg and, from to parishioners. In addition, there are newspaper clippings and scrapbooks documenting the history and activities of Unitarian and Bragg. Sermons This series contains the collection of sermons that Bragg wrote throughout his career. They have been placed in chronological order and are broken down by location. His sermons focused on liberal philosophies and how humanist and Unitarian ideas could guide parishioners in how they dealt with and thought about current events. Some of the items included in the sermons series are prayers or aspirations that Bragg would say throughout the service, marriage ceremonies, and announcements. It should be noted that sermons have been included in a spreadsheet as an appendix at the end of this document. Oversize This series contains oversize items related to Bragg and his career. Included are architectural drawings, survey maps, and financial projections for. In addition, there are a set of oversized letters, and newspaper articles that Bragg collected throughout his career.
