3 George Peck Eckman Papers cubic feet dumc.ms.2763 The purpose of this finding aid is to help you understand the nature of this collection and to assist you in the retrieval of material from this collection. The following pages contain a brief biographical history of the person, or persons, who created or collected these papers, followed by a general description of the collection in the scope and content note. If more detailed information is warranted then series descriptions also appear. The container listing appears last and is the listing of material in each box, or container, of this collection. To request material you need to turn to the container listing section. It is essentially a listing of file folders, or artifact items, in the collection. Each folder, or item, has a call number associated with it. Each folder also lists the inclusive dates of the material in the folder. On the material request form list both the call number and the folder, or item, title. Use a different line for each folder, or item, requested. When your request sheet is complete, or full, bring it to the archivist and the material will be retrieved. Biographical Note George Eckman ( ), Methodist Episcopal minister and editor of the Christian Advocate was born January 8, 1860, in Pennsylvania. He graduated from Wyoming Seminary, Drew Theological Seminary, Wesleyan University, and New York University where he received his Ph.D. in He was ordained in 1886 in Newark, New Jersey, and served churches in several New Jersey cities before accepting a call to Saint Paul's in New York City. During his pastorate there he was listed as one of New York's five greatest preachers. In 1912, he was elected editor of the New York Christian Advocate but resigned in 1915 to go to Elm Park Church in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He was a prolific author, writing on a variety of subjects. Among them were the Gospel of John, Christian social reform, temperence, and Christian eschatology. He was also active in Scranton in trying to address the problem of mine cave-ins which were displacing many of the city's poorer families. He died on June 28, 1920 while attending a Board of Trade meeting in Scranton. Scope Note The papers consist of organized files ranging from Eckman's studies at Drew Theological Seminary in the 1880s, to his financial records and travel diaries. The travel diaries include accounts of Eckman's journeys overseas, including his perspective on cities such as London, Paris, Rome, Berlin, Prague, Canada and the UNited States from the 1890s and early 1900s. There are observations of his travels and accounts of crossing the Atlantic on steamers. One of the British clippings from 1907 describes a brawl between German and American pleasure cruise passengers. Eckman's notebooks from for Drew Seminary are the oldest records. These include a self-made "Burr's Library Index" for citation and references on academic topics. Also present are sermon notes and copies from the 1890s to the 1910s when Eckman preached in South Orange and in New York City. Personal correspondence from 1895 to 1918 consists of financial transactions, letters from New York churches, and family letters from Eckman's daughter Margaret while at Vasser College, 1916 to The collection contains notes and transcripts of sermons delivered in New Jersey and New York from 1895 to Collection also includes copies and originals of Eckman's obituary from 1920 and that of his daughter Margaret Eckman from Arrangement Material has been arranged in the following manner.
