2 Learning & Serving - Linda Newsom LEARNING The adult Sunday School would love to have you join their group for study and spiritual growth on Sunday morning at 9 AM in fellowship hall. The coffee is always on! The group will finish with Zechariah on December 2. On December 9 the class will conclude its study of the Minor Prophets by discussing Malachi. On December 16 they will study the scripture from Handel s Messiah. There is no class on December 23 & 30. Would you like to take a closer look at the coming Sunday s scripture? Then join the bible study on Mondays at 9:30 AM with Pastor Shamaine and friends. This is a rare opportunity to discuss biblical issues with not only our own pastor, but other local biblical scholars and Windsor friends. Windsor on Wednesday Windsor on Wednesday (WOW) is on sabbatical until January 16. Our children help with the processing of the elements, and other special worship tasks every Sunday during the holiday season. Afterwards, they can sit with their family or make their own seasonal crafts at the craft table in the back of the sanctuary. Babies and toddlers can play in the soft area in the back of the sanctuary as well during worship. Michal King and Kaitlin Mogel care for our youngsters. Help Children Stay Warm A donation box has been set up in Ward Hall to collect winter items for school children who are in need. Please donate mittens, gloves, caps, scarves, hats, and anything else you think a child might need to stay warm this winter. Contact Gloria Ashby if you have any questions. SERVING The next opportunity to serve dinner at Children and Families Urban Movement (CFUM) at Trinity United Methodist Church downtown, is on Thursday, December 6. If you would like to join us, we would love to have you. We need volunteers at Windsor PC at noon that day to help prepare the meal. We need donations of veggies, desserts, and milk, or dollars to purchase the groceries. We need six to ten hardy volunteers to help deliver the meal to Trinity United Methodist Church, help serve the meal, and do clean-up after. As a special treat this month, the ukulele choir will lead the diners in a Christmas sing-along! Next CFUM Dates: December 6 January 3 February 7 If you can t make it on December 6, don t worry. Mark your calendar for Thursday, January 3, and join us then, or for any one of the other meals we have scheduled throughout the year. Almost all our dinners are scheduled for the first Thursday in each month. Questions? See Jim or Linda Newsom or Jayne Owen. CFUM Family Christmas Gifts The family to which we have been giving Christmas gifts the last few years is no longer affiliated with CFUM. Janelle from CFUM is working to locate us a new family. When we have received information about that family, we will notify our members and you can pick out a suggested gift that you would like to purchase. Many are gift cards, which makes your shopping very easy! Randi Perez is our contact person for this ministry. The ChurchMouse Page 2

4 To the Flock... There are many things I love about being a Presbyterian flavor of Christian, but our reformed theology and our shared ministry leadership definitely top the list! Below is an article about our particular way of being church. Enjoy! Moses selected 70 leaders to help him. Jesus choose 12 disciples. The disciples named 7 deacons to assist in ministry. The word Presbyterian comes from the Greek term for elder, presbuteros, used 72 times in the New Testament. The Presbyterian movement began as part of the reformation and grew out of ideas about how the church should be governed. Some advocated for governing by bishops (Gr. episkopos) Episcopalian, some by elders Presbyterian, and some by the congregation Congregationalist. Our polity stresses the active, representational leadership of both ministers and church members. Shared leadership is a hallmark of Presbyterianism and authority is primarily vested in those members elected and ordained to serve as elders. The session is the body of elders elected to govern the congregation. Once ordained, an elder is always an elder, whether they are actively serving on session or not. They are elected by the congregation and so represent them. However, their call is, first and foremost, to seek and represent the will of Christ in their work. Elders are to strengthen and nurture Christian faith and exercise spiritual oversight over the life and work of the church. Deacons (Gr. diakonia), like elders, are elected and ordained. All Christians are called to ministries of care, witness and service, but deacons are set apart and given special charge for these duties. Their work is to lead the congregation in extending care to those in need, in the church and beyond its doors. At our Annual Meeting (the last Sunday in January) we elect members to the Nominating Committee, whose job it is consider the particular spiritual gifts of members and leadership needs of the congregation to discern who God is calling to lead the congregation as elder and deacon at this particular time. In January, they will bring a slate of nominees to serve as deacons and elders. Each of you can help them by naming the gifts you recognize in yourself and in others. They will gladly accept your thoughts and suggestions about what is needed and who might have the right gifts for this time. Please pray for the Nominating Committee in this important endeavor. And know that they will pray together as they faithfully seek to discern who God is calling to lead the congregation at this time. The members of the Nominating Committee are elected-at-large members: Elaine Hites, Jim Newsom, Rich Teig, and Dwight Tomes, as well as JoAnn Hinschberger (Elder representative, chair), Cindy Ray (Deacon representative), and Shamaine Chambers King (ex officio). 5 Session Highlights - Angie King November 8, 2018 Session met on November 8. After the opening prayer, Session had a time of reflection using an article entitled The Gift of the Spirit by Joan Gray. The Holy Spirit begins working in us before we believe in God. Reaching the point of believing in God is a sure sign that the Spirit is at work in us. The unlimited resource of power of the Spirit opens our horizons. What could we do and how would we act, as individual Christians and as the church, if we could receive more of the Spirit? A gift worth asking for every day. Dick Woods requested to transfer his membership to the Presbyterian church in Montezuma. The contract for the property sale has been signed and we are waiting for the down payment. We are reviewing our child safety/well being policy. If you have ideas for activities, mission outreach projects, or other priorities you want our church to consider as we prepare for next year s budgeting and planning process, please talk to an elder. Next Session meeting is December 13. Ann & Don doing church yard work Pastor Shamaine, Jim, and Sue Deacon Curt in action on Beth s birthday Presenting the elements of worship The ChurchMouse Page 5

7 Stewardship & Finance - Ron Grohe October was a good month, financially, for Windsor, thanks to the generosity of our loyal, giving members. The Operating Fund ended with a Net Gain of $2,500 for the month. Total income ($12,823) was $500 over the budget for the month. Total General Contributions were over budget by $2,600 for October. Miscellaneous Income was $2,200 under budget as we are currently receiving money from only one rental property as we wait for the Offer to Buy to close. Total Expenses ($10,343) were $2,000 below the budget for the month as all expense categories were under budget. The Capital Fund showed a break even for October. Total Income was $3,700 under budget and Total Expense was $3,700 under budget. Rental Income is not coming in as all but one house has been vacated. Local Mission giving for November has not been determined at this time. Property Update November 15, 2018, was to have been the latest, agreed upon date for closing the sale of our property south of University. The closing and the sale did not happen. The investor could not come up with the cash to either make the down payment or pay the contract amount in full. The developer, Jon Koester, is frustrated, as are we, in that the agreement has not been consummated. Jon has expressed confidence that he will be able to find another investor within a short period of time. It is our hope that something more definitive will happen by the end of this calendar year. ~ Ron Grohe, Sale and Acquisition Committee Financial Report October 2018 October Month Budget Year to Date Actual Year to Date Budget General Contributions 10, , , , Operating Income 2, , , , Operating Expenses 10, , , , Net Gain (Loss) 2, (35.02) Capital Income , , , Capital Expenses , , , Net Gain (Loss) (5.80) (7,018.20) Honoring our Veterans on November 11: Keith Baker Don Beeson Rich Teig Bill Bishop Bob Snyder Dick Cox Dwight Tomes Leon Sanderson Page 7 December 2018
