2 Page 2 Mission Moment Carrie Ann Burnap What does being ordained mean? Ordination according to the United Church of Christ can be defined accordingly. "Ordination is the rite by which people whom God and the church have called to ordained ministry are set apart by prayer and the laying on of hands. It is a recognition of a particular calling from God and its acceptance by an individual. Ordination gives initial authorization to perform duties and exercise the prerogatives of ordained ministry. In the United Church of Christ ordination is carried out by an association in cooperation with a local church." But where did the idea of ordination come from? Many say the concept of ordination comes from John 15:16 (KJV) where Jesus said to His disciples, Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. Ordination is the act of setting someone apart legally and spiritually for God's ministry. We believe that God is the source and summit of all ministry in the church. For The United Church of Christ (UCC) ordination is not synonymous with ministry. We believe all Christians are called by God and equipped by the Spirit for service in the world when they are joined to the ministry of Jesus Christ in our baptism. On the other hand, not every member is called or equipped by God for the exercise of ministry within the church. For this reason the UCC has an ordination process. The ordination process consist of holding a bachelors degree, achieving a Master of Divinity, being a person in discernment within an association and going though an examination time. This examination period consist of writing an ordination paper and participating in an ecclesial council. After this point a candidate is considered ordain able pending a call. This is where Forest Street Union Church has crossed paths with my process and will service as my call from the local church. Two very important things happen at an ordination. First the candidate for ordination will make a covenant between themselves and the UCC. The covenant outlines these five principles. 1. It is a public testimony by which the call of the ordained is declared before God and in God s name. 2. Ministry is committed in the name of God and of the Church to the one who has been called. 3. By solemn vow, the one called becomes obligated to the Church to render faithfulness in the ministry. 4. The Church is to recognize in ordination that the Pastor has divine authority to teach. 5. The Church commits to God the ministry of the one that is called, and prays that God might bless their ministry. After this covenant is made the body present with the member of the UCC Association will participate in the laying on of hands on the candidate for the ministry. The principle of laying on of hands is a scriptural act of identification and accreditation and was practiced by New Testament Christians in the initiation for entrance into full time ministry. After this point and time, the candidate assumes full responsibility of their God ordained capacity for the ministry and then is considered an ordained minister both scripturally and legally. Ordination is not the ending of a process. It is really the beginning of a new journey. Just as we mark the completion of an academic program with commencement so ordination marks the commencement of a life that is now qualitatively different because of the ordination vows. The ordination will take place at Hooksett Congregation Church, Hooksett New Hampshire because they are the body of Christ that has held me in discernment though my ordination process. Please let us all come together for this new beginning! Thanks be to God,
3 Hooksett Congregational Church cordially invites you to the Ordination Service for Carrie Ann Burnap Sunday October 30, 2011 at 2:00PM 5 Veterans Drive, Hooksett, NH Reception to follow
4 Forest Street Footprints Page 4 M ISSON STATEMENT Forest Street Union Church is a family of believers in Jesus Christ, who through Christian love, encourage continued spiritual growth for ourselves, our children and all who enter here. We are a caring church, blessed with a rich heritage, seeking to share our faith in God through acts of service to the community and the world. F ROM THE DEACON S CLOSET We need your voice! Liturgists...are needed to read at Sunday services. Please sign up in the Vestry. Thank You! for sharing your voice with us in September We had our first meeting with Pastor Carrie on September 18th and everything went very well.. Highlights of the meeting are as follows: At the suggestion of the Pastor, we voted to have our Christmas Eve service at 6:00 p.m. rather than 7:00 p.m. as Dec. 24th is Christmas Eve so 6:00 p.m. would be younger family friendlier. We also confirmed that the Christmas Day service on Sunday Dec 25th would be at our regular time of 10:00 a.m. We hope lots of people will attend Pastor Carrie's ordination at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 30th. We thanked Trudi Driscoll for being the Church's coordinator with Pastor Carrie during the summer up to 9/4/11. At the suggestion of the Pastor, we will be trying out a Friendship Book at the Sunday Church services. We would ask that all people attending Church please add your name so as to make it less obvious for our visitors to sign the book. By signing, you also make it easier to see if a parishioner is ill. The Diaconate will temporarily act as pastoral liaison with the Pastor while the Pastoral Relations Committee is being formed. We voted to support the purchase of new hymnals. We noted that we are pleased as to how things have gone since Pastor Carrie took over as our settled Pastor. Deacon's Serving in October: Nancy Pollock, Trudi Driscoll weeks 1 and 2, then Ruth Hattori for the rest of the month. Thank You Sean Davis, Jim Elliott and Nancy Pollock for sharing your voices with us in September! October Deacon s Meeting Sunday 10/16 30 minutes after Service Deacons for October will be: Nancy Pollock Trudi Driscoll Ruth Hattori

Looking forward to seeing you there! A LITTLE NOTE ON MUSIC HE LEADETH ME Written by Joseph H Gilmore Music Wm B Bradbury On autumn nights as we sleep peacefully in our beds, millions of songbirds travel under cover of darkness, heading south. Somehow, they know their way. God has given them a state-of-the-art internal guidance system. If we look at Psalm 23 verse 2-3 He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name s sake. Are we not as lead by our Lord as the birds who fly south who of a certainty follow guidance there as well? This famous hymn He Leadeth Me was written by Dr Joseph H Gilmore who was the son of a Governor of NH. The story is retold that Dr Gilmore was doing pulpit supply in the First Baptist Church in Philadelphia on March 26 th The topic he had chosen was the 23 rd Psalm, which he had preached on, upon other occasions. He began, The Lord is my shepherd, but did not get further than He Leadeth Me - The words took hold of him as they had never done before and he saw in them something he had never dreamed of before, significance. It was during one of the darkest times of the Civil War. He did not refer to that fact, (as he was speaking) as he recounted, he didn t think that he did, but it may have subconsciously been a factor that led him to realize that God s leadership is the one significant fact in human experience, that where we are led, or how we are led is not relevant as long as we know that God is leading us. As he and a few members were discussing his thoughts following the service they kept on talking about the thought he had emphasized. At that point, on a blank page of the brief from which he spoken, he penciled the hymn, talking and writing at the same time. He later handed it to his wife and forgot about it. She on the other hand sent it to The Watchman and Reflector, a Boston publication where it was first printed. He was later to be totally surprised that his hymn had been set to music by William B. Bradbury. IT was while he was preaching in Rochester NY at the Second Baptist Church that he was amazed to find, his own hymn, He Leadeth Me in their hymnal. 1 He leadeth me, O blessed thought! O words with heavenly comfort fraught What e er I do, where-e er I be, still tis God s hand that leadeth me.
