3 JANUARY s Star Birthdays Daniel Murray Daniel will be six on 28th January. I live with Dad and Mam in Ness in the Isle of Lewis and I go to Cross Free Church. I love Ness because there are lots of open spaces to play. I love football and running. During the holidays I like going to the play park and the beach. I would like to invent a machine that could turn me into a Power Ranger. My favourite colour is yellow. (Would your invention be yellow, Daniel? Ed) Blair Drummond Safari Park is the most exciting place I have ever been to. I wish Jurassic World was real so that I could go there and see dinosaurs. Mairi Maclean Mairi will be eight on 20th January. Hi, my name is Mairi Maclean and I am very, very nearly eight years old! I live in Beauly, which is a nice place to stay. I live with Mum and Dad and I have a big sister called Katie who is nine years old. I enjoy going to Brownies with my friends and I like Highland dancing too. I play outside with my friends a lot which is fun. On holiday I like to swim and make new friends. The most exciting place I ve been to is Landmark. I would most like to go to Paris and see the big tower. I would like to invent a time machine to take me back in time to see the old queens and kings of long ago. My favourite colour is gold like the Queen s crown. (Perhaps your time machine would be gold too, Mairi. 4 QUICK FEET AND QUICK HANDS Eddie came home from football training with a scowl on his face. 4 Dad listened to Eddie s complaint. The coach always puts me in goal, he grumped. Good goalies need to have quick feet, quick hands and quick minds, Dad explained. And I think that suits you. Maybe he thinks you ll make a good goalkeeper, suggested Mum. That made Eddie feel a bit better about always being in goal.

We re playing Blixter School next month, Eddie said later. And they re really good. They ve been the champions for three years. Debbie, Eddie s big sister, had just come in.

That gives you a month to get better at saving goals, she said. The next Saturday the coach noticed a change in Eddie. He seemed more with it and he saved more goals than ever before. During the next three practices Eddie didn t let a single goal through. I knew you could be a good goalie, if you tried, he told the boy. Eddie blushed with delight. When he told his parents what the coach had said Dad winked and said, Well done! On the day of the big match Eddie felt very nervous. His mum and dad were there to cheer on the team. Eddie s saving tactics worked well and for the first time his team beat Blixter Primary. Goalie Eddie was well patted on the back and his mum and dad were delighted. He couldn t wait to tell Debbie. It s good being a member of a team, Eddie told his sister later. Debbie, who was thinking about her Sunday school lesson, agreed. I think Christians are in God s team. Dad smiled. I ve never thought of that, he said. But you re quite right. All Christians are on God s side and we re all working together to live as he wants us to live. Eddie thought about what Dad said while he was having his juice and biscuit. I want to be in Jesus team, he told his mum. So I ll always try my best, even when I m being a goalie. Dad smiled. That s a really good goal, he said. Dad didn t realise he d said anything funny, even when Debbie and Eddie burst out laughing! 5

6 HAPPY NEW YEAR! In January we think about the new year and this new year is I wonder if you ever think about old years and what happened in them. Let s go back in 100 year jumps and explore what happened in history was right in the middle of the First World War. And in 1816 the American Bible Society was started to help make sure that people could have their very own Bibles in a language they understood A very famous scientist called Galileo was told by the church not to study science! That was a big mistake because studying science explores God s wonderful creation and helps us to understand it better Konrad von Gesner was born. When he grew up he studied plants, birds, fish, snakes and other things besides and wrote books about them. He also wrote one about languages and finished that book with the Lord s Prayer in 22 different languages! He knew that studying creation teaches about the Lord God.

As the sea ice melts each year polar bears have to travel long distances to find food. Some have been known to go thousands of miles in just one year.

Polar bears only live in the Arctic. They especially like being near the edge of ice packs where the ice melts and refreezes. That s where they find most seals and seals are their favourite dinner.

Having furry feet also stops them from slipping. Underneath their thick fur polar bears have a layer of blubber.

A new-born polar bear is only about 30 cm long and weighs around 500 gm. It s tiny! An adult male can reach 634 kg. That s huge! Males can be up to 2.75 m tall and females up to 2.1 m. As well as seals polar bears eat beluga whales and walrus. If they find birds eggs, they ll eat them too and, if they are really hungry, they ll eat plants though they don t like their veggies. OUR WONDERFUL WORLD! Most bears don t have furry feet, but God has given polar bears furry feet to keep them from getting frostbite as they travel over ice and snow. Blubber is a kind of fat that helps keep them warm and prevents them from sinking in the sea because fat floats. Hunting used to be a big threat to polar bears but their biggest threat is now climate change. If the polar ice melts fewer polar bears will be able to live in the Arctic. Now here s a curious thing. Although polar bears look whitish to our eyes, their skins are black and their fur is colourless. God has made them well camouflaged in the snow. 9

16 STORIES TO LIVE BY Jesus told a story about a farmer who went out to sow seeds. Farmers carried their seeds in baskets just like the man in the picture. They threw handfuls of seed from side to side over the ground. Other seed fell on a rocky place. It was so rocky that there was hardly any soil. Some seed fell on the path. Birds saw it lying there and came and gobbled it up. Seeds that land on paths don t grow. The seeds that landed on the rocky place sprang up quickly and then died. There wasn t enough soil for their roots to grow. 16

Some people have hearts that are hard and the seed can t grow. Some hearts are full of lots of other things and Jesus words are crowded out.

17 8 Jesus speaks to us through his Word, the Bible. Pray and ask God to give you a soft heart where his Word can grow. If we do that, God grows good things in our hearts and lives, things like love and joy and peace. Colour in the pictures! Jesus words are like seed being sown in people s hearts. Some people have hearts that are hard and the seed can t grow. Some hearts are full of lots of other things and Jesus words are crowded out. Sadly some people let Jesus words be lost by forgetting them. The rest of the seeds fell on good ground. They sprouted and sent roots deep down into the soil. Then they grew up and up and up. When autumn came they had seeds ready to be harvested. Some seeds fell among thorns. There were so many thorns growing there that the little seeds couldn t find places to put down their roots. They were choked out. 17

Preshal s people do art, sewing, cooking, knitting, pool, karaoke and line dancing. They play games and laugh and are happy together. Some of them study the Bible together.
