EDUARD NEWS IN 2010 2nd March 2010 This past summer in Columbus, a friend of mine tried hard to explain to me that modeling is a sport, and that we need to do everything in our power to get modeling

For now, good ol Nuremberg will have to suffice. The significance of the Nuremberg convention is today by many manufacturers, retailers and even modelers downplayed. I suspect its undeserved.

I think this is a mistake, since at Nuremberg, companies present their capabilities, strengths and ambitions, and a comparisons of presentations shows the trends and direction of future development.

There was an influx of modelers, journalists and manufacturing colleagues with the impression that there was not all that much new.

He didn t say if it should be the summer or winter games. As far as I know, there was no modeling in Vancouver. So we ll see what happens. For now, good ol Nuremberg will have to suffice. The significance of the Nuremberg convention is today by many manufacturers, retailers and even modelers downplayed. I suspect its undeserved. Its still the biggest get together of modeling firms in the world, but many, especially small manufacturers, have chosen to forego participation. I think this is a mistake, since at Nuremberg, companies present their capabilities, strengths and ambitions, and a comparisons of presentations shows the trends and direction of future development. It may seem overstated, but it seems that those that aren t at Nuremberg, just aren t at all. Even last year, I noticed an interesting phenomenon that this year was even more pronounced. There was an influx of modelers, journalists and manufacturing colleagues with the impression that there was not all that much new. It s as if the previous anticipation of newly announced items has been almost completely exhausted. I am convinced that this is due to the fact that there are actually more new items announced than ever before. A large percentage of these comes from the production of Chinese firms, who are flooding the market with kits at a fevered pace. Add to this the central European influx of short-run kits, and the situation is ripe for a burned out effect. The market then is saturated with kits of relatively good quality for reasonable prices, but nothing that really impresses. The response that I have observed at our stall at Nuremberg leaves me to believe that we have managed to offer something of interest, not the least of which is our desire to face the overall apathy, for a lack of a better term. Of our new offerings displayed, the centerpiece, of course, was the Dora, and I had at times the feeling that visitors were expecting a flop.

Technically, the Brassin line was shown off at shows last year, but didn t go on sale until January of this year, so this was the first time it was shown off as an available, functioning product line.

Its true that the Brassin line was developed in a way that among resin details is unique, which was, of course, the basis of the development in the first place.

We wanted to offer something to the modeler that would not require the usual large amount of cutting and sanding of the kit. In a year, we ll use that twenty-twenty hindsight to gage our success.

2 Of our new offerings displayed, the centerpiece, of course, was the Dora, and I had at times the feeling that visitors were expecting a flop. It was surprising how many times I heard but, that looks pretty good.. Besides the Dora, the other big premiere at our stall was the Brassin line. Technically, the Brassin line was shown off at shows last year, but didn t go on sale until January of this year, so this was the first time it was shown off as an available, functioning product line. So far, the consensus appears to be that the Brassin line offers among many other resin details that differ in finesse of detail and design. Its true that the Brassin line was developed in a way that among resin details is unique, which was, of course, the basis of the development in the first place. Our goal was to develop a line of details that were not just.well, detailed, but easily applied, without drastic adoption of the base kit to accept the resin. We wanted to offer something to the modeler that would not require the usual large amount of cutting and sanding of the kit. In a year, we ll use that twenty-twenty hindsight to gage our success. And, of course, we will gage how far this design philosophy has seeped into the subconscious. In the future, the design and integration of the Brassin line into our own kit development will be made simultaneously with the kit itself. This symbiosis will form the next evolution in our design philosophy. Personally, I feel that this is the right road, and it will push the quality envelope a step further. And while we are on the subject of quality and the raising of the bar, I d like to mention the medal results. Nuremberg was always associated with Model of the Year awards. The pomp and glamour are long gone, but the medal awards still hold a strong significance. Even for that reason, it s a good thing that ModellFan was able to wait out last year s problems, and the tradition lives on. As for us, we received Model of the Year for our 1/32 nd scale Bf 109E. From the competitive KIT, we also received Model of the Year, specifically for the Bf 109E-4. Both of the awards made me very happy, because it reminds me that the road we are on is not as fruitless as some commentators dream.

3 The big February events, the Olympics and Nuremberg, are now history, and its time to turn to the future. At least, the near future. What can we look forward to in March and April? KITS IN MARCH The star for March will undoubtedly be the Limited Edition boxing of the Su-7. That this kit was originally produced by OEZ Letohrad, and later Kovozavody Prostejov (KP) is already well known. As is the established standard, the kit is complemented by our photoetched brass, decals produced by Cartograf, and a new seat from the Brassin line. The other two kit offerings are the reboxed L-39C Albatros in 1/72 nd scale, and a quarter scale Ni-11 in the Weekend line.

4 PHOTO-ETCHED SETS IN MARCH A quick look at the photoetched brass being offered up this month shows that, after a bit of a lull, the tempo of productivity is gaining momentum. First and foremost, I d point out the collection of sets for the B-24J in 1/48 th. In April, this line will continue, and will also grow to include the B-24D. March will also see offerings for another naval subject in 1/350 th, and in the form of two sets for the HMS Repulse. 6 BRASSIN The Brassin line continues to grow with a quarter scale seat for the F-16 from Tamiya, and two wheel sets for the same aircraft, but from Kinetic. If it seems like we are only making items for the F-16, just take it as our usual learning curve speed, and a promise of what s to come. For example, there will be another seat in April for the F- 16, but it will be accompanied by an exhaust set, but there will also be the first two sets, seats and wheels, for the Phantom. And that s just the beginning!

If you find yourself feeling that the March release schedule of kits is a little lean, then I think you ll find April s offerings a bit more interesting. Judge for yourself.

There will be the new 1/32 nd scale Bf 109E-4/7 Trop with the new correct canopy. In the Limited Edition line, we will be offering the Fokker D.VII (MAG), which will be a somewhat non-traditionally conceived kit which will please modelers of not just biplanes, but those who are fans of First World War aviation. For us, the MAG is a bit of a stepping stone to the Albatros D.III OEFFAG, which we are actually preparing for June, so more about that next time. And the standard over the past few months triad of new releases will be rounded out by the Bf 110G-4 in a Weekend boxing. This will be a bit more expensive kit in the Weekend line, but still the typically great value for the money. There will be no short-changing the brass, and these will be dominated by sets for the Tamiya Spitfire Mk.IX. I ve said in the past, that its easiest to develop these types of sets for the best kits available, the Spitfire from Tamiya is a good one to put it mildly. You can judge for yourself how well we approached developing photoetched sets for this kit, and how well they complement it. All of this will be taken to Mosonmagyarovar at the beginning of April.
