JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER PHILADELPHIA Annual Report
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO AND BOARD CHAIR Thanks to your generosity, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia is empowered to utilize our collective resources to make a difference in the lives of hundreds of thousands of Jews. Every community is as strong as the efforts of its members, whether that investment is of time, talent or treasure. Over the past year, the strength of your partnership with us has helped our Jewish communities thrive locally, in Israel and around the world. Judaism encourages us to take an accounting of ourselves at least once a year, a spiritual self-assessment known as cheshbon ha nefesh, accounting of the soul. It asks us to mindfully evaluate all that we do, and all that we are, so as to remain faithful to our values, keep our goals in sight and perform at our peak. This report is the Jewish Federation s own annual cheshbon, our opportunity to be transparent and give you a thorough accounting of our work and our finances, and ensure they are in perfect alignment with our mission the soul of this organization. We remain focused on our three pillars of sacred work: serving vulnerable populations, inspiring community engagement and supporting Jewish life and learning. Together, we help maintain a Jewish world that is interconnected, vibrant, and will continue to flourish for generations to come. This year, in addition to supporting a vast array of health and human services, there were so many milestones, including a change in volunteer leadership with Susanna s installation as Board Chair, and our communities massive rally to declare our Stand Against Hate. We extend a heartfelt thanks to Bud Newman for his years of dedicated service as Board Chair and to 2017 Campaign Chairs Rhonda and David Cohen. With this cheshbon you hold in your hands, we re excited to show you the positive impact we ve influenced together. One exciting figure worth noting: Our 2017 Annual Campaign raised just above $32 million, representing an 8.4% increase over the previous year. The campaign s success helps to demonstrate the vitality of our Jewish communities, as well as the vision we share for our strong collective future. Only through everyone s participation is the Jewish Federation strong, efficient and responsive enough to accomplish all that we do. For helping us repair our world and for all your support for the work that remains ahead we thank you. 3 WHO WE ARE For more than 115 years, the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia has served as the hub of the region s Jewish communities. The Jewish Federation is dedicated to three focus areas: serving vulnerable populations, inspiring community engagement, and supporting Jewish life and learning locally, in Israel and around the world. Through a unique partnership of philanthropists, organizations, volunteers and professionals, the Jewish Federation is guided by three values: GIVING $ We help people invest in causes and programs that are most meaningful to them in our Jewish communities. We put those philanthropic dollars to work in order to provide community members in need with education, housing, wellness, emergency support and more. INCLUSION We seek to engage all members of our Jewish communities regardless of background, affiliation, ability or orientation and make them feel welcome. When we help everyone enjoy their Jewish experiences to the fullest, and open ourselves to the diverse perspectives they bring, we create a stronger Jewish world. TRADITION We keep the light of Judaism bright by creating opportunities for all members of our communities to partake in our rich Jewish heritage of education, history and culture. We also cultivate young leaders to ensure that sacred torch will continue to be passed from generation to generation l dor v dor. For more information, visit jewishphilly.org. 3
It s a blessing, it s an honest blessing. I can t say enough for how much they ve helped me. Reaching Out to Feed a Friend Every Tuesday around 11:00 a.m., Lisa s phone rings. At the other end is a glimpse into the lengths our Jewish Federation goes to ensure every foodinsecure member of our communities is nourished. Hi, Lisa! says the Northeast NORC volunteer on the line. She is calling to make groceries appear in Lisa s near-empty kitchen through a combination of old-fashioned people power, plus a new technological innovation: The Mitzvah Food Program s online ordering system. The web-based system increases efficiency, expands access to our pantries and is convenient for clients, who can place orders from any computer, tablet or mobile phone. Home Repairs for Holocaust Survivors I didn t think there would come a time I would be by myself, says Anna, one of hundreds of Holocaust Survivors living in our area. Just like with other older adults in our communities, our Jewish Federation helps to keep Holocaust Survivors thriving with socialization opportunities, food, transportation and home repairs everything from plumbing to replacing broken windows and installing shower grab-bars. For Anna, those home repairs have also included a brandnew roof, allowing her to continue living independently, in comfort and with dignity. And if a homebound client doesn t have computer access? That brings us back to Lisa, who has mobility issues, chronic pain and no computer or smartphone. That s why each week a volunteer calls Lisa s landline, then uses the NORC computer to place Lisa s order. At the food pantry, a second volunteer packs Lisa s grocery bag. And since Lisa is unable to pick up her groceries, a third volunteer is called as a part of our food delivery service. Lisa is overjoyed with each delivery. I get fresh carrots and sweet potatoes, and a huge bag of rice. It s all so fresh and good, she gushes. She says that despite her hardships, the kindness she s shown makes her feel among the lucky. 829,000 lbs of produce was rescued and provided to people with food insecurity in Israel each week SERVING VULNERABLE POPULATIONS The Jewish Federation makes a vital difference in the lives of vulnerable community members of all ages in Greater Philadelphia, in Israel and around the world. Our commitment includes delivering nutritional support, enabling people living with a disability to reach their full potential, helping older adults age safely in their own homes, and providing lifesaving humanitarian relief for Jews in need. Supporting Communities Globally The Jewish Federation s work to support our Jewish world truly spans the globe. When hardship threatens or disaster strikes, we and our partner agencies ensure that no Jew ever feels alone. 17,606 $0 local low-income individuals received food assistance 1,764 at-risk children 3,233 people in the Providing care for Holocaust Survivors and keeping the memory of the six million alive is among the Jewish Federation s highest honors ,185 Holocaust Survivors received home repairs Holocaust Survivors in Israel were provided basic necessities in Israel received tutoring and mentoring received medication and medical services 1,779 Students in Greater Philadelphia received Holocaust education 5 6
Advocating for Our Communities When it comes to issues important to our Jewish communities, it is crucial that our voices be heard in the halls of power. The Jewish Federation s Jewish Community Relations Council holds Advocacy Day missions to educate, train and lead volunteers to engage impactfully with legislators. Recalls participant Ellen Fischer of the 2017 Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C.: I had recently joined Women s Philanthropy, and I saw this opportunity to go to D.C. and speak out with a bunch of smart, creative people. Well, it brought me back 50 years this was my first advocacy trip since I marched in the 60s! We were given advance material, and on the bus ride down we were given guidance about how to frame the issues. Excited as I was, I was scared. We were representing 200,000 Jewish people who vote. We took that responsibility seriously. In Washington we were divided into groups, and spent all day in meetings with members of Congress and their staffs. There was a lot of dialogue and a lot of ground covered. It was a great feeling to realize how important Jewish voters are, and that by speaking out we were making a difference. We were all inspired. Stand Against Hate When amid a year of growing anti-semitism hundreds of headstones were toppled at Mount Carmel Cemetery, our Jewish Federation mobilized the communities to come together in a powerful show of unity. I m a little verklempt! Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said through tears during a tour of the cemetery restoration. He later tweeted, We must continue to respond to hate with love and speak out against injustice. INSPIRING COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Our thriving Greater Philadelphia Jewish community is actually made up of many vibrant communities, representing a diverse spectrum of affiliations, interests, ages, and neighborhoods. The Jewish Federation knows our communities are stronger together. That s why we continuously connect people and organizations with one another to fortify communal bonds, encourage collaboration and amplify our collective voices, so that we may work together towards tikkun olam, our Jewish duty to repair our world. Jewish Information & Referral Services Searching for information within the Jewish communities of Greater Philadelphia? Look no further than Jewish Information & Referral Services, which last year fielded 3,530 requests from people navigating the broad array of resources our Jewish communities have to offer. Frequent requests included: New residents looking to connect with Jewish communities Jewish education information Summer camp scholarships Donations of goods and volunteer services Job-seeking and professional development services Counseling services and support groups Possible sources of basic needs such as utilities, food, housing and home repairs Legal and immigration services Programming for people living with disabilities Inquiries about community events 31,000 in-person and virtual attendees at our Stand Against Hate on Independence Mall 3,000 individuals worldwide RAISED $288, volunteers helped with the cemetery cleanup 7 8
Travel with Purpose Learning to Lead On Jewish Federation missions, participants take meaningful journeys to Jewish communities across the globe expanding their worlds while also deepening their connections to one another, to their Jewish identities and to Israel. The Teen Giving Project is an ambitious, collaborative program launched last year by the Jewish Federation, whose curriculum about Jewish philanthropy expands teenagers understanding of tzedakah and tikkun olam. For eight months, the teen participants learned fundraising, communication and decision-making skills. They discussed what it means to give with Jewish values, and by consensus determined a cause they wished to fund. The program culminated in a real-life challenge: The teens raised and allocated real-life grant money. 1,787 Philadelphians traveled 1,377,600 miles Philadelphians participated in transformative Israel experiences to connect with global Jewish communities The Lasting Joys of Jewish Summer Camp Jewish summer camp is about so much more than campfires and color war. At camp, children get the chance to explore who they are and who they want to become. They develop independence, learn life skills and create deep friendships, all in the context of forging meaningful connections to Judaism that can light up Jewish identities for a lifetime. Locally and globally, nearly 18,000 children SUPPORTING JEWISH LIFE AND LEARNING The Jewish Federation supports and promotes vibrant Jewish living and learning locally and abroad for children, teens, adults and families. No matter where you are on your Jewish journey, we provide opportunities such as educational and camping resources, leadership development and family programs to further your exploration. That way, all members of our communities can meaningfully engage in our rich Jewish heritage and culture, and strengthen our Jewish future. 9 received scholarships to attend Jewish camp 95% 87% of local needs-based scholarship parents said their child emerged from Jewish overnight camp with stronger Jewish identities of parents reported that without their needs-based scholarships, they would have been less likely to have sent their child to Jewish camp locally Sound like a lot for a teenager to handle? Think again. The inaugural class of 10 teens set their expectations sky-high, with a fundraising goal of $10,000. We really wanted to push ourselves, says participant Dylan, then a tenth grader. Incredibly, his group managed to exceed their goal, raising $10,600. The kids found it such an inspiring experience that most are returning for another year. Dylan, who is returning as a peer educator, has big goals for the new group. I d encourage them to beat us out from last year. Investing in the Next Generation 1,052 local teens participated in Jewish extracurricular social and educational programs 6,324 local young adults participated in programming that strengthened their Jewish identity 10

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS Fiscal 2017 Endowment Assets ($262,425,573) The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia manages the largest pool of endowment and endowment-related assets within the local Jewish communities, totaling more than $260 million, and grants more than $15 million annually from restricted, unrestricted and Philanthropic Donor Advised Funds. Creating a Jewish legacy empowers you to support the Jewish causes you care most about, in perpetuity, such as providing camp scholarships; helping older adults and people living with disabilities; and supporting programs in Israel and overseas. Through our endowment program, we managed 818 funds during the 2017 fiscal year. Funds Held for Synagogues/Agencies - 3% (managed as a service) $8,226,558 Unrestricted Funds - 39% $101,836,948 Fiscal 2017 Philanthropic Donor Advised Fund Grants ($7,227,060) A Philanthropic Donor Advised Fund at Jewish Federation is one of the simplest and most effective ways to organize and implement your charitable giving. It s an account that allows you to put aside money for future charitable giving giving you the immediate tax benefit of your contribution while giving you time to decide which charities to support. As a fund holder, whenever you wish, you can recommend grants to qualified charitable organizations of your choice. Until then, those funds are invested for tax-free growth. Because Philanthropic Donor Advised Funds are so easy and tax-advantageous, they have become one of the fastest-growing charitable vehicles in the United States today. To that end, the Jewish Federation administered 253 funds throughout our communities during the 2017 fiscal year, which made grants in the following areas: Charitable Gift Annuities - 2% $4,240,778 Life Insurance Policy - 1% (cash surrender value) Restricted Funds - 31% $82,007,269 General Philadelphia Grants - 29% $2,127,137 Jewish National and International Grants - 30% $2,191,773 $2,549,107 Charitable Remainder Trusts - 1% $2,487,551 Donor Advised Funds - 23% $61,077, Examples of Endowment Grant Recipients Abramson Center for Jewish Life Anti-Defamation League American Committee for Weizmann Institute American Jewish Congress American Society for Technion Apter Barrer Art Center (Ma alot, Israel) Atidim B nai B rith Youth Organization Board of Rabbis Cradle of Liberty Council - Boy Scouts (for Jewish Programming) Federation Early Learning Services Female Hebrew Benevolent Society Friends of the IDF Gershman Y Gratz College HIAS Pennsylvania Hillel of Greater Philadelphia Holocaust Awareness Museum and Anne Frank Theater Project InterfaithFamily Jewish Learning Venture Jewish National Fund Jewish Theological Seminary Kaiserman JCC KleinLife National Museum of American Jewish History Nirim Foundation Northeast NORC (Naturally Occuring Retirement Community) Philadelphia Jewish Archives Center PJ Library Reconstructionist Rabbinical College Taglit-Birthright Israel The Passover League Tribe12 General National and International Grants - 18% $1,267,942 Jewish Philadelphia Grants - 23% $1,640,208 For more information on endowments and Philanthropic Donor Advised funds call or visit jewishphilly.org/daf
