4 The Common Thread What is the common thread that weaves the vast number and great variety of wisdom sayings from Proverbs into the fabric of a wise and winning life? Very simply, and nothing less than, motivation!

6 Selective Sluggardliness e underlying message of Proverbs is that while you may be doing fine in nine out of ten areas of life, it is that one area the tenth area le unattended, that will diminish or destroy your life. One who is slack in his work is brother to one who destroys. P r o v e r b s 1 8 : 9

7 Selective Sluggardliness 1. IGNORING REALITY: When I avoid problem areas in my life, I have slipped into sluggardliness. Avoidance: What, me worry? A sluggard doesn t plow in season; so at harvest time he looks but finds nothing. Proverbs 20: 4

8 Selective Sluggardliness 2. POSTPONING RESPONSIBILITY: When I put off until tomorrow what I should do today, I have slipped into sluggardliness. Procrastination: I ll deal with that someday!

9 How long will you lie there, you sluggard? When will you get up from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man. Proverbs 6: 9-11

10 Selective Sluggardliness 3. MAKING EXCUSES: When I build a case for inaction with flimsy excuses, I have slipped into sluggardliness. Blame: It s not my fault! e sluggard says, ere is a lion outside! or, I will be murdered in the streets! Proverbs 22: 13

11 Selective Sluggardliness 4. FATALISTIC CAPITULATION: When I have passively surrendered to living without initiative in my tenth area, I have slipped into sluggardliness. Resignation: ere s nothing I can do about it. e sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not even bring it back to his mouth! Proverbs 19: 24

12 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest....ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer. Proverbs 6: 6-8, 30:25

13 The Academy of the Ant The ant needs no external motivation. Consider the ant: It has no commander, no overseer or ruler. Proverbs 6:7 Like the ant, we, too, have a God-given, built-in motivation to do what needs to be done.
