3 "What does the Bible teach about setting goals?" The Bible offers a balanced approach to setting goals that includes making plans, yet doing so with wisdom and humility. Paul urges us to live with that kind of focus and intentionality. Philippians 3:13-14 (NKJV) Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 4 To live with no motivation or planning is not God s desire Proverbs 6:6-11 says, Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man. Read more:

5 Seasons of Life Laziness causes a person to neglect work and fail to exploit the window of opportunity. Summer is the preparation time for winter, and we dare not wile it away. Failure to plan ahead will result in poverty and want. Wisely setting goals leads to better results: The plans of the diligent lead to profit (Proverbs 21:5). Read more:

6 Just because we ve done our planning doesn t guarantee our goals will be met. The process of setting goals must be infused with humility. James teaches: Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes (James 4:13-14). Read more:

7 Balance The Bible teaches against two extremes: 1. Never setting goals 2. Setting goals with no thought of God. The balanced alternative is found in James 4:15: Instead you ought to say, If it is the Lord s will, we will live and do this or that. It is good to make plans, as long as we leave room for God to change our plans. His goals take precedence over ours. Proverbs 16:9 says, In his heart a man plans his course, but the LORD determines his steps. In other words, we have our ideas and make our plans, but God will ultimately accomplish His sovereign desires. Do our goals make room for the unexpected? Do we love God s will more than our own? 8 Focus Finally, we can take comfort in the words of Jesus: Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself (Matthew 6:33-34). Our goal-setting need not be accompanied by fear. If our plans focus on Christ and honor Him, He will see to it that the best results the eternal results are ours. Read more:

10 Verses on Goals & Planning Proverbs 16:3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans. Proverbs 16:9 In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. Proverbs 21:5 The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. Luke 14:28 Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? Philippians 4:13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

14 Now: You are going to make decisions about your commitment to these areas! Decision: Declaration, commitment, no turning back! Goal: Where you want to be?

15 Application What We re going to start off with the first part. WHAT do you really want? Review the 5 Key Areas of Life and choose one area where you want to make a significant change. Choose an area that is critical for you to have your best year ever. Circle that Key Area From a Kingdom-perspective, write what your Key Area of Life might look like at the end of the year if it was your best year ever and you achieved the satisfaction level you desire.

16 Make a Powerful Decision Application Exercise Decide Think of the area you most want to focus on. What conscious decision can you make about your commitment to making a positive change in this area? WHY do you want it? Are you interested. or are you committed?!

What will you miss out on in your life if you don t make the changes you want in the Area of Life you are focusing on? {Think of something the Lord may bring across your path.but you would not be ready to take advantage of!} What will it cost you if you are not moving your life in the direction of your long term vision? How will it hinder you spiritually, emotionally, financially or physically if you don t make a change in this area of your life?

18 The What, Why, How Success Strategy is simple: WHAT WHY Determine WHAT you want, make a conscious decision, put it in writing Connect with WHY you want it get committed, build the desire. HOW Identify HOW you can achieve it and take action The HOW is what you do, what you say and what you think.

19 Why Don t People Don't Set Goals? This is one of the greatest single obstacles to success in adult life! Keeps you in your comfort zone. People don't realize correlation between success and failure. In fact, failure is a prerequisite to success. Not serious, don t want to take action. Don't realize the importance Don't know what they want Stuck on The How s, of exactly how to achieve them Fear of rejection or criticism Fear of failure.

20 God will never ask you to do something and then not give you the ability to do it. Scripture says in James 4:2: You have not because you ask not. If you re not asking big then you re shortchanging yourself. You will never reach your highest potential if you pray only small prayers. Scripture says Philippians 3:13-14: Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Reprogram your computer. Load in some new software. First Chronicles 28:20 says don t be discouraged by the size of the task, for the Lord your God is with you. He will see to it that it is finished completely

21 Can you see how these verses are just a couple of examples of how we should come alongside our friends? We can have stimulating conversations about life and business. This will encourage BOTH parties! We can encourage and edify someone else about life or business. This may be from a past failure God has allowed us to go through. Now you may realize a small part of why you had to go through that time! How Would You Proverbs 27:17 - Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. Hebrews 10:24 25-And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.
