Read the Bible in 1 Year 3 February, 2015 So they quarreled with Moses and said, Give us water to drink. Moses replied, Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the LORD to the test? Then Moses cried out to the LORD, What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink. So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the LORD saying, Is the LORD among us or not? Exodus 7 Call Kevin , kwwarren@gmail.com with questions
From last time: Discussion of what you read You have read the pre-mosaic history of the Hebrews!! Cast of Characters Abram (Sarai) Abraham (Sarah) Ishmael and Isaac Isaac Jacob and Esau (Edom) Jacob Israel Twelve sons twelve tribes of Israel Joseph and the brothers Big gap in time. Then Moses Lots of deception, generation to generation Called to task at times (Tamar, Joseph, etc) Finally, God works his promise through the workings of these lies Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. Genesis 50 We see how the Hebrews came to be in Egypt (for a long time).
Abraham and Isaac Note: Abraham did not need instruction on sacrificing Isaac Gods in this time frame never refused a sacrifice In this time frame, a God saying stop was new unexpected Isaac deceived by Jacob and his mother Jacob and Joseph (and the rest of the gang) So many stories, where to start? (lots of lies and deception too ) 12 sons and Dinah (Levi and Simeon in Shechem) Why record the Shechem story? Why the violence? Jacob wrestles and angel for a blessing Jacob cutting a deal remember the floating torch and pot If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father s household, then the LORD will be my God Gen 28 Moses A murderer. (not generally how you think of Moses, right?) At a lodging place on the way, the Lord met Moses and was about to kill him Ex 4 Why was Moses son not circumcised? Zipporah not happy?? (We will not hear about her again ) Moses not gung-ho negotiates with God What if they do not believe me Send someone else the Lord s anger burned against him what about your brother? Ever wonder how long the bush had been burning before Moses notices?
Discussion of what you read Notice a change in the tempo after 400 years of no record? Big Events God proposes a covenant people must choose The big if IF you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession Ex 19:5 The people choose We will do everything the LORD has said Ex 19:8 God speaks directly to the people Ex 19:19 God delivers the 10 Commandments Ex 20:1-17 The people ask God not to speak to them anymore Ex 20:18 God describes life as his people Eden? Worship the LORD your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span Ex 23: 25 With a snake? worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you Ex 23:33 Extreme detail in description of Tent of Meeting Veil for the Holy of Holies Remember from NT? (Mat 27) Aarons High Priest outfit What happened to the ephod? (Another thing to check your closets and attics for) Pomp of some of current churches rooted here? (A turban for Taylor would really add a touch of class ) God s offer sounds pretty good For the generations to come this burnt offering is to be made regularly at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting before the LORD. There I will meet you and speak to you; there also I will meet with the Israelites, and the place will be consecrated by my glory. So I will consecrate the Tent of Meeting and the altar and will consecrate Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests. Then I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God. They will know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of Egypt so that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God Ex 29:46 Ex 32 Moses leaves for a month with God Aaron makes the calf. (it just pops out!!) 1631 Sinners Bible God knew their (our) weaknesses Worshiping the created rather than the creator
Rich Man Matthew 19 Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life? Why do you ask me about what is good? Jesus replied. There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments. Which ones? he inquired. Jesus replied, You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself. All these I have kept, the young man said. What do I still lack? Jesus answered, If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth. Ten Commandments are in two sections: four to God and six to people Jesus focuses on the section of six, but only lists five why? Like the woman at the well, Jesus knows this man. He covets He clings to created things Jesus knows our weaknesses. He offers true life do we trust enough? I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief! No God but God No Idols God s name is holy Keep the Sabbath Honor Mom and Dad Don t murder No adultery Don t steal Don t lie Don t covet

Hebrews 9-10 Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and also an earthly sanctuary But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper. They are only a matter of food and drink and various ceremonial washings external regulations applying until the time of the new order. When Christ came as high priest He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood In the case of a will, it is necessary to prove the death of the one who made it, because a will is in force only when somebody has died; it never takes effect while the one who made it is living. This is why even the first covenant was not put into effect without blood. When Moses had proclaimed every commandment of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves, and sprinkled the scroll and all the people. He said, "This is the blood of the covenant, which God has commanded you to keep the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter a man-made sanctuary that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God's presence. Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Big circles God s plans Our hope
Next Meeting July 18 (More) Moses look for worshipping the created instead of the creator Does God s covenant with the Hebrews require faith?
