2 Rabbi Ari Dembitzer Rabbi In a few weeks, we will be lighting our little menorahs in our windows for the world to see. Realistically these lights are not getting much attention, for they are being trumped by different lights. What are these little lames supposed to show to us and the world, when not many people can really see them. The rabbis tell us that the word Chanukah contains the rood word Chinuch, or education. The question then becomes who are we educating and what are we educating? The rabbis tell us that it is us we are educating. We are educating that godliness exists in nature and in human accomplishments as well. Just because the light is not physically pronounced and large, it is there. It is the driving force behind all. We are educating ourselves in the comfort of our homes to deine our purpose and then continue to shine this light on the world. The candles ignite our lames within us which then inspires the world. As the Rabbi of this wonderful shul, my mission is to light the ire inside of us so we can then shine forth, Blessings for a good winter and a Happy Hanukah. Rabbi Yaakov Weiss Assistant Rabbi The story of Chanukah came about at a time when the Jewish people were going through an intense struggle and battle against assimilation. During the time of the story of Chanukah there was great assimilation of the Jewish people due to the inluence of the Greek culture. The Maccabees not only stood up against desecration of the Temple but the ideals of Judaism as well. It was a ierce internal battle as well as a physical battle. In the end, the Priests who have become known as the Maccabees emerged victorious. They defeated the mighty army and regained control over the Temple. They went back in and rededicated the Temple a itting job for the spiritual guides and leaders of the Jewish people. In future generations, the mitzvah of lighting the Chanukah candles was instituted. The mitzvah was created as a public display of the miracles that Hashem did for the Jewish people. We were also originally commanded to put the candles out in the front of the houses in order to encourage us to be proud and strengthen our own believe in Hashem and His Torah. Most mitzvot are internal, but the Chanukah candles are meant to bring our inside connections and beliefs out into the open. May they inspire us to continue to grow in our mitzvot, learning and involvement. About the Cover Shabbat Menorah H 26 x W 40 in.
