Explore the Bible Lesson Preview September 20, 2009 "God is Faithful" Background: Psalm 105:1-106:48 Lesson: Psalm 105:7-11; 106:6-7, 19-21,40-45 Motivation: Ps. 105 parallels 1 Chronicles 16:8-22, which records David's song of thanksgiving when the Ark of the Covenant was moved to the Tabernacle. We have an example of praise, thanksgiving and joy. Examination: I. Worship God (105:1-6) Within these verses, we have several attributes of worship: A. Thanksgiving "Oh give thanks to the Lord!" (1) B. Prayer "Call upon His name" (1) C. Praise "Make known His deeds among the people!" (1) D. Singing "Sing to Him, sing psalms to Him." (2) 1 / 8
E. Exposition "Talk of all His Wondrous Works!" (2) F. Glorification "Glory to His holy name" (3) G. Rejoicing "Let the hearts of those rejoice who seek the Lord!" (3) H. Passion "Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face evermore" (4) I. Reflection "Remember His marvelous works..." (5) J. Acknowledgment "...you children of Jacob, His chosen ones!" (6) II. Acknowledge God's Faithfulness (105:7-45) Believer's Study Bible, p. 811: 105:1-11 "These verses are found in substantial parallel in 1 Chr. 16:8-22, a passage attributed to David; it seems logical, therefore, to assign the entire psalm to him. Verses 8-11 constitute one of the most forceful statements in the Bible regarding the promise of the land given to Abraham (cf. Gen. 12:1-3; 13:14-17; 15:18; 17:7, 8; 26:3, 4; 28:13-15). The Abrahamic covenant was irrevocable and everlasting; it was an unconditional covenant (cf. 89:33-37; Gen. 9:13)" A. Affirmation of the Covenant (7-15) "He remembers His covenant forever" (8) 1. Promise "To Israel as an everlasting covenant" (10) 2 / 8
2. Property "To you I will give the land of Canaan" (11) 3. Protection "Do not touch my anointed ones, and do My prophets no harm" (15) B. Sojourn to Egypt (16-23) "Israel also came into Egypt and Jacob dwelt in the land of Ham" (23) C. God's Deliverance (24-36) "He sent Moses His servant, and Aaron whom He had chosen, They performed His signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham" (26-27) D. The Exodus (37-44) "Egypt was glad when they departed" (38) 1. Direction "He spread a cloud for covering, and fire to give them light in the night" (39) 2. Provision "The people asked and He brought quail" (40) E. The Promised Land "He brought out His people with joy, His chosen ones with gladness. He gave then the land of the Gentiles, and they inherited the labor of the nations" (43-44) III. Pray for Salvation (106:1-5) A. Praise "Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His 3 / 8
mercy endures forever." the Lord!) (1) This Psalm begins and ends with Hallelujah! (Praise B. Prayer "Remember me, O Lord, with the favor you have toward Your people. Oh, visit me with Your salvation, that I may see the benefit of Your chosen ones, that I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, that I may glory with Your inheritance." (4-5) The psalmist calls upon God's name for the resulting benefit of gladness, glory and inheritance. IV. Confess Unfaithfulness (106:6-46) A. Sins in Egypt & the Red Sea (6-13) "We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly." (6) In stark contrast to the faithfulness of God, His people have been unfaithful in keeping His commandments. B. Lust in the Wilderness (13-15) "Lusted exceedingly in the wilderness" (14 ) C. Envy of Moses and Aaron (16-18) "when they envied Moses in the camp, and Aaron, the saint of the Lord" (16) D. Idolatry with the Golden Calf (19-23) "they forgot God their Savior" (21) 4 / 8
E. Despising the Promised Land (24-27) "Then they despised the promised land; they did not believe His Word, but complained in their tents..." (24-25a) F. Idolatry at Baal Peor (28-30) "They joined themselves also to Baal Peor" (28) G. Rebellion at the Spring of Meribah (31-33) "...they rebelled against His Spirit" (33) H. Disobedience in Canaan (34-39) 1. Disobedience "they did not destroy the people" (34) 2. Unfaithfulness "they mingled with the Gentiles" (35) 3. Idolatry "They served their idols" (36, cf. 39) 4. Infanticide "They even sacrificed their sons and daughters to demons" (3 7, cf. 38) I. God's Judgment (40-43) 1. Anger "Therefore, the wrath of the Lord was kindled against His people" (40) 5 / 8
2. Abandonment "And He gave then into the hand of the Gentiles and those who hated them ruled over them" (41, cf. 42) 3. Aftermath "And were brought low for their iniquity" (43) J. God's Mercy (44-46) 1. Attention "Nevertheless, He regarded their affliction when He heard their cry" (44) 2. Affirmation "And for their sake He remembered His covenant, and relented according to the multitude of His mercies." (45) V. Praise the Savior (47-48) A. God Provides Salvation "Save us, O Lord our God and gather us from among the Gentiles, to give thanks to Your holy name, to triumph in Your praise." (47 ) The Gentiles and their corrupting influence had led the people into sin. (35) B. God is Eternal "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting! And let all the people say, Amen!'" (48) Application: 6 / 8
