2 1 Chronicles 16: For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. 26 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. 27 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place. 28 Ascribe to the LORD, all you families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 29 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his [e] holiness.

10 The word in this text for thanks is the Hebrew word that means reverence or to worship with extended hands and to make confession of who God is. Thanksgiving refers to showing gratitude, being appreciative, giving recognition, acknowledging, giving credit and praising. Our text reads O give thanks unto the LORD. for he is good, because his mercy endureth for ever.

11 In this text there are two reasons for giving thanks. The first is that God is good. And the second is that His mercy endures forever.

12 The Psalmist knew of all the attributes of God but when he came to writing the first verse of Psalm 118 the Holy Ghost inspired him to write God is good.

13 Psalm 73:1 Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart. Psalm 100:5 For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations. Ps 135:3 Praise the LORD; for the LORD is good: sing praises unto his name; Psalm 145: 9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

14 Lamentations 3: 25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. Nahum 1:7 The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. Mark 10:18...there is none good but one, that is, God.

15 Psalm 118:1 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.

16 God is not only good but He is merciful.

17 God s mercy is boundless Ps 108:4 For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

18 God s mercy is undeserved Ps 103:8-13 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. 9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. 10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.

19 God s Mercy is intimate Ps 145:8-9 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. God s Mercy Prolongs Life Lam 3:22-23 It is of the LORD s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

20 God s mercy Provides Salvation Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, God s Mercy Forgives Sin Micah 7:18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.

21 God s Mercy Makes Salvation Possible 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. God is Merciful even in Judgement Lam 3:31-32 For the Lord will not cast off for ever: 32 But though he cause grief, yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies.
