1 בס"ד פרנס היום C ooki n g Science Do you remember learning that the tongue has specific taste regions? The girls in Stein Yeshiva s Learning Pavilion know that current research has shown this to be inaccurate, with the exception of the back of the throat which is more sensitive to bitter taste. Why is this? To prevent us from inadvertently swallowing harmful substances. In Food Science, the students are investigating taste and flavor. An investigation that is taking them on a journey through many different disciplines; history, economics, geography, science, and culinary arts. The students have begun their investigation with salt. They have learned that while very inexpensive today, salt was once a very precious commodity needed to preserve food and enhance taste. It was so important that it was traded for very precious goods. The students investigated the different methods of salt production and were very surprised to see huge lakes of Continued on page 2 T he Ro s h C ho d e sh P ro je ct The yeladim in the Learning Pavilion are participating in a new initiative called The Rosh Chodesh Project that is sponsored by The Vahashayvosa Foundation. The project, a monthly chizuk in emunah, is being encouraged and supported by Gedolei Yisroel who have identified emunah as one of the great challenges of our times. Each month, the students will see a video that instills one specific message on the topic of emuna/yud Gimmel Ikarim. The video includes related intriguing video clips with inspiring songs to go along. After discussing the video, the students complete a worksheet with questions designed to stimulate individual thinking and internalization of the message. The worksheets are then submitted to the Foundation and entered into a monthly raffle. We are looking forward to hearing some of our students original thoughts. 2 inquiry investigation interpretation SY Happenings: LP Boys It has been another exciting week in the Stein Yeshiva! In our Midos Unit, the boys discussed what it means to take responsibility for one s actions. For example, if at times we make a decision or even an unintentional mistake, then we need to step up and take care of the consequences of our actions. The boys discussed different situations and what the proper response would be. Parsha hashavua is an important component of our learning each week. The boys explore the parsha using various modalities, including a a powerpoint which related the main points of the Parsha. In our Yidiyos B Yadadus Unit, the talmidim are working on a special project depicting all of the 12 Parshiyos of Sefer Berashis. The boys were busy cutting, pasting and designing their own personal Parsha Hashavuah Sefer. In addition, the boys are making great progress in the Chiyanu Workbook. The talmidim in learning pod ב are reviewing the 1st page, 21a, of the Gemara in Baba Metzia. They also have been making good progress in Chumash, and in their Chumash dikduk skills. The boys in learning pod א are continuing to make great strides in mastery of the beginning of Parshas Lech Lecha. Their enthusiasm is inspiring! Brush! Brush! Brush! The 3s were thrilled to welcome a special visitor this week, Jared's mommy, Dr. Tamar Greenspan, who is a Pediatric Dentist. Dr. Tamar spoke about how important it is for children to take care of their teeth. The children were mesmerised by her robot teddy bear who sang about how to brush your teeth for a full 2 minutes. Dr. Tamar showed the children correct brushing and what foods are good and bad for out teeth. We could see how carefully the children had listened as they used a big toothbrush on a toy play mouth, brushing up and down for 2 minutes in each quadrant of the mouth including the tongue! The children also showed wonderful Yaakov-like behavior as they waited patiently for each friend to take a turn. At the end of her visit, Dr. Tamar gave each child a special care package, complete with new toothbrush, dental floss wrapped around a toy animal, and other dental goodies. The yeladim excitedly talked and reminisced about Dr. Tamar's visit all week long! A huge toda raba to Dr.Tamar for coming into school and teaching the children all about caring for their mouths. If you are a parent and would like to visit your child s class, please let us know! Food Science, Continued from page 1 salt and ancient salt mines, complete with salt sculptures and a modern salt spa. Salt, NaCl, a combination of sodium (which explodes in water) and chloride (which as chlorine can be poisonous), is a truly amazing substance, vital to our survival. The students have begun to explore some of the properties of salt. They learned that a pinch of salt can enhance sweetness and experimented by putting salt on fruit. The students also salted and preserved lemons. They learned that preserved lemons are commonly used in Sephardic cooking and have a recipe for Djej Makalli, Moroccan chicken with preserved lemons and olives. They can t wait to try their own lemons in three weeks time! Preserved Lemons: Cut a lemon in 1/4s or do not cut all the way through. Sprinkle 1tsp kosher salt over each lemon. Put in jar and push down releasing the juice. Repeat til jar is full. Put 1tsp of salt on top and fill the jar with lemon juice. Let sit on counter for 3 days, turning the jar to distribute the salt. 3 Around the Early Childhood This Week DAYCAR E What an exciting and fun week in the daycare! The toddlers had great fun exploring the beautiful fall season outside. Out on the playground, the morahs encouraged the young tots to look up at the trees and to take note of the bare branches. Down on the ground, the morahs pointed out the colored leaves all scattered around. While pointing to the leaves, the morahs recited out loud with the toddlers all of the different fall colors: red, yellow, and brown. Back inside, the morahs helped the toddlers point to red, yellow, and brown toys all around the room. The morahs were so thrilled to hear the children point to a nearby object and excitedly call out its color! We are so proud of our budding learners! This week s parsha provided the perfect opportunity for the kinderlach to explore different fabrics and sensory materials. The toddlers learned the name of the twin brother, Esav, and felt surfaces that were rough and fuzzy. The toddlers then heard the name Yaakov and felt materials that were clean and smooth. The toddlers then made a sensory collage using all of the different materials to show the differences between esav, rough, and Yaakov, smooth. Such meaningful and hands-on parsha learning! Every morning, watching the toddler-davening in action is such a pleasure. The toddlers are continuing to use big hand motions, sing along to some of the words, and shake their bodies and dance around during the tefilah time. They just love hugging the plush Torah and passing it around and sharing it with their friends! Over in the infant room, the small kinderlach are also learning each week in their own special way. The morahs are carefully observing the infants interacting with one another with a smile, a touch, and for some, lots of chatting! It is wonderful to see a youngster share a toy with a friend. The infants are progressing in their gross motor skills, whether it is crawling, rolling, standing, or walking. There is a sense of happy calm in the infant room that is felt by all. The babies love music and have the biggest smiles when the morahs start to sing. How wonderful it is to see so many kinderlach smiling and clapping along when the morahs start to sing If You re Happy and You know It. THE T WOS This week in the 2s, the yeladim continued to learn all about the fall season and the changes taking place all around them. The yeladim stood outside on the playground and noticed all of the different colored leaves. The morahs asked the children if they could list out loud all of the different colors of the fall leaves on the ground. While pointing out the different colors, the children especially took note of the color brown. Back inside the kitah, the morahs challenged the children, Where in our classroom do we see the color brown? The children eagerly walked around the room and investigated all of the different places that they could spot the color. The children explored the classroom carefully and took note of brown all around: brown blocks in the bins, brown patterns on the carpet, brown in the posters and artwork on the walls, and brown in their own outfits and jackets, too! At storytime, Morah Ayse pulled out a book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? The yeladim excitedly pointed to the cover to point out the the bear to their morahs, it was the color brown, of course! The morahs were thrilled to see so many children recognize this story from home and encouraged the children to join in and read along as the morah read out loud to the class. As part of our unit on learning colors, the yeladim created their very own brown bear page and a puppet. The children enjoyed reading the Brown Bear book and loved coloring and adding brown fluff to their own bears. They touched the fluff and commented on how soft it felt, perfect for the fur. The children also used finger paint and commented on how squishy the brown finger paint felt. In parsha learning this week, the morahs extended the focus of sensory touch to incorporate important elements of the Yaakov and Esav story. The twos learned about the tiumim, the twin brothers, and how different one was from the other. The children explored the different textures of smooth and rough through objects and sensory play including: sand, fur, rope, crunchy leaves, squishy, and slimy paint, as well as smooth surfaces in the classroom. The children then chose from different sensory materials to create their own Yaakov and Eisav characters to show the total contrast in textures between the two brothers. It was a sensory- filled, hands-on learning experience, and the yeladim can t wait to get their hands on more fun learning next week! Shabbat shalom, l kulam!

4 TH E TH R E ES This week in Parshas Toldos, the yeladim continued to learn about the Avos and Immaos. The children love to hear Rebbe animatedly tell the story of the parsha while they sit attentively listening on the rug. The yeladim become very involved in the story and always ask lots of great questions. After hearing Rebbe tell the story of Yaakov and Eisav, the children dramatized the two brothers and their opposing characters in class. They role played Eisav rudely demanding some of Yaakov's red lentil soup, and then acted out Yaakov who would always ask politely and be sure to say please and thank you. The children also practiced doing other mitzvos just the way Yaakov Avinu would have, such as sharing and helping friends clean up toys. All week during lunch, snack, and play times the morahs emphasized that we want to always emulate Yaakov Avinu's positive middos and his great love of Torah. While learning about Yaakov and Eisav, the children spoke about the word opposite and what it means. They observed objects placed in front of them- big, small, light, dark, hard, soft - and then had to identify the object s opposite. Next, the children were challenged with more abstract thinking and were asked to name emotions while a friend identified the opposite emotion. The children enjoyed the opposites game and continued to explore the concept by coloring and matching opposite pictures. They practiced holding a pencil or crayon correctly and drawing lines to connect the pictures -- a difficult task when you are only three and they sure did great! In the Five Senses Unit, the yeladim were so excited to begin exploring the sense of touch. The children knew that Yaakov and Eisav were opposite in their middos, but what about in their physical appearances? An array of materials was laid out for the children to pick up, touch, and explore. As the children ran their fingers through the materials, the morahs challenged them to describe what they felt. The children commented on the materials being hard, soft, rough, smooth, and even prickly and fuzzy. The morahs then set up an activity to take the sensory fun one step further: the Mystery Box! The yeladim closed their eyes, reached inside of the box, grabbed an object, and relying on their sense of touch alone, had to try to figure out what was the object that they were feeling. Of course, no peeking allowed! Be sure to ask the children about the different objects they touched and whether or not they guessed correctly! As the children explored the different textures, Morah Ellyn explained why it's important to have the sense of touch. Touch allows us to know when our body is hurt or if something does not feel good, like water that it too hot or too cold. Our bodies can also feel the temperature so that we know how to dress when going outside, whether to wear light layers in the summer or heavy clothes in the winter. The learning unit on touch was wrapping up, but the children begged for more fun sensory play. The morahs acquiesced and the children excitedly rolled up their sleeves. The choices weren't easy: the morahs pulled out play dough, kinetic sand, water beads, shaving cream, the water bin, rice, discovery bottles, fabris, gems, pom-poms, and so much more! They even had a chance to play with lentil beans from the story in this week s parsha! The children investigated with such enthusiasm. They squished and squashed their hands through the different textures. The children created different landscapes while they played and the morahs and Rebbe joined in on the fun! To create a beautiful culminating project, the children looked around the classroom for materials with different textures in order to create a visual touch collage. The children observed and investigated their immediate surroundings and gathered interesting material. Using scissors and glue, the yeladim created their own personal textured collage using the materials that they collected. They ran their fingers and hands over it after it was completed and remarked about the different feeling each item represented. They sure came out beautiful!

5 THE FOUR S This week in the 4s, the yeladim explored the different characters and important concepts of Parshas Toldos. Since Yaakov Avinu was a tzadik who was known for his Torah study, Morah Riki emphasized the great importance of studying and learning Torah. Using the class Sefer Torah that the children pass around at davening time, Morah Riki opened it up and read a pasuk out loud so that the children could hear actual words of Torah being read, from the Torah itself! The children then went on a small tiyul next door to see real Torah learning in action, in the Stein Yeshiva Learning Pavilion. The 4N children watched quietly and attentively as the boys sat with their chumashim and gemaras open and learned out loud with their Rebbe. To show their appreciation for the Torah learning that the older boys do, the children made chocolate chip cookies in class to present as a hakaras hatov gift to the boys and rebbeim. The boys were so touched by the surprise gift and show of gratitude and were happy to share the cookies with the yeladim. Torah study sure can be delicious! Yaakov is also known for his great commitment to the mitzvah of respecting his parents. To emulate and model this all important mitzvah and middah, the children created thank you letters to take home to their parents. In contrast to Yaakov, the children learned all about the character of Eisav and his lack of Torah study and good middos. The children engaged in all sorts of dramatic and pretend play to demonstrate the differences in character between the two brothers. In one game, the children walked around the room. When Morah called out Yaakov! the children said please and thank you to one another and mimicked the action of davening or learning Torah. When the children heard Eisav! they pretended to run and hunt with bows and arrows. Morah Riki also brought in a fur coat for the children to try on when pretending to be Eisav. The children also learned about the color adom and how it represents Eisav, both for his skin color and his bad temper. The word adom is also how Eisav refers to the soup that Yaakov made. The children had fun playing with red lentils in the class and making soups of their own during sensory play. The yeladim also decorated Eisav and Yaakov cookies, one decorated with red for Eisav and one with symbols of Torah for Yaakov. This week the children learned the letter samech for siddur, since people like Yaakov would daven to Hashem every day. Morah Riki opened up her siddur and the children had a chance to point out the letter samech embedded within the tefillos. They did such a great job finding the samech! In limudei chol, the 4s continued their unit on Family and I am Special. This theme is inspired by the parsha and the children s growing understanding of the Imahos and Avos and how special and different HaShem made each and every person. The children reviewed the letter F for family tree and completed turning F letters into trees with photos of their family members. In a special class-wide group project, the children have started work on making a huge pillow for the new class reading corner. The children complained that the reading corner was lacking a comfy place to sit. Mrs. Temple challenged the class with creating their own cushion and the children enthusiastically accepted the challenge! Each child is contributing a piece of artwork on fabric to add to the class-wide project. The children used dilly dots to paint the basic shapes of ducks, cars, alphabet letters etc., and then helped Morah Temple thread the needle to sew their creations onto the large pillow. The children concentrated on a variety of fine motor skills pinching, pulling and holding the needle in order to sew. Morah Temple and Morah Riki were amazed at the dedication to detail demonstrated by the yeladim, kol hakavod! For the I am Special unit, the children drew self-portraits on recycled newsprint, made rainbow paper using special art paper, water colors and pipettes, utilizing pinching and squeezing, and cut out the picture frames to display their artwork. Please be sure to check out the wall across from the 4s room to see their beautiful work on display! The students discussed the basic shapes used to create simple people drawings as well as identifying the main parts that make up a body. Morah Temple introduced the new vocabulary words and less familiar known body parts of pupil, nostrils, and palm to increase the children s vocabulary and knowledge of their unique selves! In a class discussion on this topic, Morah Temple emphasized how special we all are and how each child s talents and traits enrich our class. To illustrate this point, the class watched a video of The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen. Following the video clip, the children gathered into a social-skills circle and each child demonstrated one unique physical movement that they could do for the rest of their peers. Some children skipped, crawled and rolled across the room. The children applauded as they watched their classmate Elisha do a perfect cartwheel! Wow! In writing this week, the children worked on the letters E and F. The children focused on using the correct pencil grip and lifting up their pencil in order to jump to the next line. It was also a great time to encourage the students to write their own names on their work, both to strengthen their writing skills and to emphasize how special and unique they are. In math this week, the students graduated to the number twelve! Using an oversized teaching clock with moveable hands, the children engaged in a variety of games to practice counting to twelve. The students were able to recognize the numbers, place them in order on the clock, identify time by the hour and say "one o clock, two o clock etc."
