Korean Panel Art UNIT 6 SESSION 2 Panel 1 (Draw a house with a flat roof because that is how the houses were built at that time in Israel. The house in this story probably had stairs on the outside that led to the rooftop.) Once there was a wealthy woman who lived in the small town of Shunem in Israel. Because she was a wealthy woman, her house contained furniture. (Draw a table inside her house.) Her husband owned fields and grew wheat. One day Elisha stopped in Shunem. The woman noticed that he looked tired, hungry, and thirsty. She invited him to her house for a meal. She may have served him freshly baked bread and oil for dipping. (Draw Elisha in the house with food to eat.) As the woman and her husband talked with their visitor, they knew that someone special sat at their table. When it was time for Elisha to leave, the woman said, Please come again. Any time you are in Shunem or nearby. I will, Elisha said. After Elisha left, the woman said to her husband, I m sure our visitor is a holy man of God. Let s make a small room on the roof for him. So they built the room and put a bed, table, chair, and lamp in it. (Draw the rooftop room. You may want to stop and talk about what this structure might have looked like. It seems to have been more than a tent, which was typical for a rooftop retreat. It could have been made of stone, with branches for the roof.) Elisha now had a home away from home. He often stopped there. The widow always prepared a meal for him, and there was always oil in the lamp. Panel 2 One day Elisha and his servant Gehazi arrived in Shunem near the green valley of Jezreel. (Draw Elisha and Gehazi standing in a field of wheat beginning to sprout green shoots.) This field belonged to the husband of the Shunammite woman. Elisha and Gehazi were glad to have a resting place. It was just what they needed after many days of travel. Elisha wanted to thank the woman in a special way. Elisha spoke to Gehazi. Call the Shunammite woman, he said. She has done so much for us. Ask her what we can do for her. Perhaps we can speak to the king or the commander of the army for her. (Draw the Shunammite woman.) So Gehazi asked the woman what might please her. I have a home among my own people, the woman said. That is enough. Gehazi and Elisha had a conference. She asks for nothing, Elisha said. But perhaps there is something we could offer her. Well, Gehazi answered, she has no son, and her husband is old. Gehazi s observation gave Elisha an idea. He spoke to the woman. At this time next year you will have a son. You will hold him in your arms. No, the woman said. That is too much to hope for. It would only disappoint me if it did not happen. Do not deceive me or raise my hopes. The next year, the woman gave birth to a son. Panel 3 (Draw the field again with the sun high and bright in the sky.) When the child was older, he went out one day to his father in the fields. The golden grain in the fields was ripe. The bright sun shone down upon the fields and the workers. After many hours in the sun, the boy complained to his father. Oh, my head, my head! The father said to his servant, Carry him to his mother. The boy was carried to his mother and sat on her lap until noon. (Draw the mother with her arms around the boy.) Then he died. She had begged the prophet not to deceive her by promising her a son and then disappointing her. So she knew she must go to him again and beg that God would help her. This hurt was worse than never having a son at all. She carried her dead son to the rooftop and laid him on the bed of the man of God. Then she closed the door and left. Panel 4 (Draw the woman talking to her husband in the field.) The woman ran to her husband and said, Send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so that I may quickly go to the man of God and come back again. She did not tell him why she had to go. 53

54 Why today? he asked. It is not a day of worship. I will go, and it will be all right, she said. So he let her get on the donkey, and a servant went with her. (Draw a servant and a donkey next to the woman.) Make the animal go fast, she said. Do not go slow for me. They had to travel twenty-five miles to Mount Carmel. The woman knew she could find Elisha at the shrine where Elijah had built an altar to God. Panel 5 (Draw a mountain with Elisha at the top. The woman on the donkey and her servant are at the bottom. Who is in the lead the woman or the servant?) From high up on the mountain, Elisha saw the woman coming. Elisha said to Gehazi, Look! There s the Shunammite! Run to meet her and ask her, Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right? Gehazi ran down the mountain. (Draw Gehazi at the bottom of the mountain, talking to the woman.) Is there a problem? he asked, nearly out of breath. Everything is all right, she said, hurrying right past Gehazi. With every bit of strength she had left after the long journey, she climbed to the top of the mountain. Panel 6 (Draw the woman at the top of the mountain with Elisha.) When she reached the man of God, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi, arriving just behind her, thought she was acting out of control. (Draw Gehazi in the picture.) He went over to push her away, but Elisha said, Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress, but the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me why. Did I ask you for a son, my lord? she said. Didn t I tell you, Don t raise my hopes? Now he is dead. Help me. Elisha said to Gehazi, Go back with the woman. Tuck your cloak into your belt so that you can run quickly. Then Elisha handed his staff to Gehazi. Take my staff in your hand and run. If you meet anyone, do not greet him, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy s face. Gehazi took the staff and ran. But the woman did not leave with Gehazi. She spoke to Elisha. As surely as the LORD lives and you live, I will not leave without you. So Elisha got up and followed her. Panel 7 (Draw the boy in the rooftop room flat on the bed.) Gehazi arrived in Shunem first. He went up to the rooftop and laid Elisha s staff on the boy s face. (Only draw the staff on the boy because Gehazi leaves.) But there was no sign of life. The boy did not make a sound or move. When Elisha reached the room on the rooftop, the boy was lying dead on Elisha s couch. Elisha closed the door on his servant and the boy s mother. Elisha prayed to the Lord. (Draw Elisha praying.) Then he placed his body over the dead boy s body. (Explain that this action reminds us of CPR but it was more than Elisha s breath because he was depending upon God to give life back to the boy.) Elisha did not concern himself with the fact that touching a dead body would make him unclean. Then, as if he was breathing life back into the boy, Elisha put his mouth on the boy s mouth. He also put his hands on the boy s hands. The boy s body grew warm. Elisha stood. He walked back and forth in the room. The boy did not move. So Elisha stretched himself over the boy once more. Panel 8 (Draw the rooftop room again.) This time the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. (Draw seven Z s for sneezing.) Elisha called to Gehazi. Gehazi came running into the room. Call the mother, Elisha said. (Draw all of them standing Elisha, Gehazi, mother, and son.) The mother came and Elisha said to her, Take your son. She fell down at Elisha s feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out. It was a story to tell again and again as her son grew into a man. And it was good to know that God hadn t blessed her only to take the blessing away. Her God was faithful.

Servant Cards UNIT 6 SESSION 2 Directions for leaders Photocopy these pages; then cut the cards apart and place in eight trays you ve marked with the eight intelligences (Word Smart, Number Smart, and so on). There are three cards for each intelligence. Word Smart Find a story in a book that you enjoyed when you were younger. Read it aloud, and tape record your reading. Then give the story to a younger child to follow along while reading. Give the child a written copy as well. Or record a poem or short article from your church magazine. Give the tape to an elderly person in your neighborhood or in a rest home who has a hard time seeing printed pages. Word Smart Write greetings such as Get Well, Happy Birthday, and Thinking of You. Print the messages inside blank cards you ve bought or cards that you have made. Tie a ribbon around the packet of cards and give them to someone to give to others, or sign them and give them away yourself. Word Smart Collect books to donate to the children s room of a homeless shelter or for children in a specific family. Start by selecting some of your favorite books from when you were younger. Number Smart Count the number of chairs in your house. Assign a person to each chair. It may be someone from your family, someone you know, or someone you ve heard about. Sit in the different chairs and think about what that person might need and what you could do for him or her. Is the number of people you thought of greater than the number of chairs you have? Number Smart Find an empty jar. Estimate how much money you could save in that jar by collecting coins and how long it will take you to fill the jar. Ask your teacher at church or your parents to help you find a charity or other good cause. Then give your money to that cause. Number Smart Make an extra large calendar for an elderly person who lives alone or in a retirement home. (The larger size will be easier for him or her to see than a normal calendar.) If you wish, pair up with a picture smart person to make the calendar colorful. Picture Smart Join a number smart person who is making a calendar for an elderly person. Add pictures or other decorative touches to the calendar. Picture Smart Staple four pages together to make an eight-page booklet. In this booklet draw and write a favorite Bible story or a story that you want to tell. Share it or give it to someone. Picture Smart Make and decorate bookmarks for someone who might be lonely or sad. You can check your local bookstore for ideas on how to make bookmarks look really cool. Body Smart Offer to play games with the toddlers in the nursery at church. Or offer to play with the young children in a neighborhood family while the mother is busy preparing dinner or doing other work in the house. Body Smart Offer your services to a person with disabilities in your church or school. Be available to push their wheelchair or open the door at a scheduled time each week. Or offer this same help at a center where there are people with disabilities. Body Smart Sign up for a walk to raise money for a good causes (Cystic Fibrosis, CROP, Race for the Cure, and so on). Ask people to pay you whatever they wish for each mile. 55

Music Smart Organize a group of people who can play an instrument or sing. Try to include at least one person you don t know very well. See how often you can meet and what could happen. Music Smart Team up with other musical people and prepare a song that you could sing to elderly people in a nursing home. Ask your parents or teacher to help you arrange the visit and accompany you. Music Smart Collect music cassettes, CDs, or rhythm instruments for a children s room in a shelter or for children in a needy situation. Search especially for music to encourage or cheer. People Smart Set a goal to meet and talk to one new person this week. Be friendly and polite. If you can, offer to help him or her with a school assignment or with something else. Or invite him or her to your house after school. People Smart Visit with an elderly person you or your parents know. Ask about his or her childhood and favorite activities as a child. Prepare by making a list of questions so your conversation doesn t come to an end too quickly. People Smart Write a note or card of encouragement to someone from your church or community who is ill. Try to make the note personal and specific, so that the person reading it can tell it was meant just for him or her. Self Smart Make a prayer journal. Keep lists of people and causes to remember in prayer. Also record answers to your prayers. Self Smart Find a poem or Bible verse that you like. Write it out and send it to someone from your church who s ill. If you wish, team up with a picture smart person or music smart person to make this poem or verse extra special. Self Smart Keep a diary for at least one week. In the diary tell about what happened during your day. Especially include any opportunities you had to help other people. Try to help at least one person each day in some way. Nature Smart Offer a free dog-walking service in your neighborhood. Explain that you are doing this because you like dogs and you want to be helpful. Nature Smart Set up a pet day in your yard (with your parent s permission). Invite all those with pets to display their animals and invite those who do not have pets to enjoy them. Make this a time to get to know your neighbors, young and old. Nature Smart Join with a number smart person and a picture smart person and make weather symbols for a calendar to give to an elderly person. You could make them out of paper for taping on the calendar or out of colored contact paper to use as stickers. 56

On the Commander s Trail UNIT 6 SESSION 3 Follow the clues in the story and mark the map of Damascus and Samaria on your paper. Use your Bible (2 Kings 5) to help you with the clues. 1. Naaman was a Syrian army commander living in Damascus. Find Damascus on the map and circle it in red. 2. Under Naaman s leadership, the Syrians won important battles against the Israelites. That made Naaman a favorite of the king. (The king didn t know it was really God who allowed the Syrians to win.) In a raid the Syrians captured a young Israelite girl. She became a slave in Naaman s house. Find the young slave girl in Naaman s house. Draw a dish in her hand to show her working. 3. The little Israelite girl was a faithful servant to Naaman s wife, even though she was a long way from home. It was about miles from Samaria to Damascus. (Write the answer to 9 x 7, then add 7 to the final total.) Draw a line between the two places and write the distance on the line. 4. Naaman was not only a smart commander; he was a fair master. But he had one great problem. He had leprosy. Put a white spot on Naaman. Do you suppose his leprosy began on his nose? Or do you think it was on his big toe? 5. One day the Israelite girl spoke to her mistress. If only my master could see the prophet in Samaria. He would cure the master of leprosy. After hearing that news, Naaman called for his chariot and horses. And off he went to Israel. He carried gifts with him. Solve the equations to see what gifts he carried. (You can check your answer in 2 Kings 5:5.) 6. Naaman arrived at the palace in Samaria. The king of Israel sat on his throne. When Naaman explained why he came, the Israelite king tore his clothes. Unscramble the letters in the bubble to see what the Israelite king said (2 Kings 5:7). 7. Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes. He sent a message to the king. Find the scroll and decode the message (2 Kings 5:8) So Naaman climbed into his chariot and rode to the house of the prophet. Elisha didn t come out. Instead he sent a messenger, who said... Write the message that Elisha sent by the way of the servant. Find the message in 2 Kings 5:10. Naaman went away angry. I thought the man of God would come out to me. Why didn t he call on the name of the LORD his God? I expected him to wave his hand over this spot and cure me of my leprosy. Draw a big arrow pointing to Naaman s nose or his big toe. 10. Naaman went off in a rage. The rivers in Damascus were cleaner and better than that dirty river in Israel called the Jordan. But Naaman s servants went to him and said, Why not wash and be cleansed as the prophet said? So Naaman went to the Jordan River. Draw the tracks of Naaman s chariot wheels down to the Jordan River. 11. So Naaman went down and dipped himself in the Jordan times (2 Kings 5:14). Circle a fish for each time Naaman dipped that big white toe or that big white nose into the Jordan. His flesh became like that of a young boy, and his nose looked pretty good too. 12. Naaman and his men went back to Elisha. Naaman stood before the prophet and said, Now I know your God is the only God. Please accept my gifts. But Elisha would not accept the gifts. 59

After Naaman set out on his journey back to Damascus, Gehazi, the servant of Elisha, said to himself, My master was too easy on Naaman. Why shouldn t Naaman give up some of his wealth for his health? I will run after that rich commander and get something from him. Travel through the maze to get Gehazi who is on the road back to Damascus. 13. Is everything all right? Naaman asked. Everything is all right, Gehazi answered. But my master sent me to say, Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come from the hill country for a visit. We were thinking about those clothes made of fine Damascus cloth. Our local market doesn t carry that brand. And you know how young men like to dress these days. An outfit of fine Damascus cloth for each of them and a talent of silver would give them the right look to impress their friends. Pick out two outfits of your choice. 14. By all means, take two bags of silver and two outfits, Naaman said. So Gehazi took the gifts and went back to Samaria. When he came to Elisha s house on the hill of Samaria, he quickly put them in the house before Elisha saw the gifts. Then Gehazi stood before his master Elisha. Where have you been, Gehazi? Elisha asked. Nowhere, Gehazi answered. That s not true, Elisha said. With my spirit I saw you when Naaman got down from his chariot and met you. This is not the time to take,,,,, and. Find what Elisha said was not right to take. See 2 Kings 5:26. Then the leprosy of Naaman came on Gehazi. His whole body turned white as white as snow, as white as cotton, as white as the old nose of Naaman. 60

Paco and Providence UNIT 6 SESSION 4 Jodi opened her eyes. Sunlight streamed through her bedroom window. It must have been a dream, she told herself. But it seemed so real! In her dream a man named Paco walked her to an elevator and said, God gives you everything you need, because he cares for you. She could see Paco in her mind. He was short and had dark curly hair. How could she have dreamt up such a person? Maybe he was an angel! A part of her wanted to skip and shout that maybe she had met an angel. Was that possible, she wondered? That thought made her sit up, wide awake. So much had been happening the last few weeks. Her mother had given birth to a baby boy ten weeks too early. Mom and baby Joe were still in the hospital. Was she most afraid for her mom, for the new baby, or for herself? On top of all that, a new family had moved in next door. Not only were they new to the neighborhood; they were also new to the country. They came from Korea and could barely speak English. The girl, Chong, kept asking Jodi to say words in Korean. It was fun, but after a while it was hard work trying to remember all those words. Besides, Jodi s other friends didn t want to take the extra time it took to understand Chong. Was it worth giving up time with her friends to spend time with Chong? Jodi couldn t stay in the house another minute. She had to get out and think. As she walked the familiar sidewalks in her neighborhood, she couldn t stop wondering about Paco and what he had said. Jodi! She glanced up to see Karen sitting on her porch. Karen was a lady who came to church in a wheelchair. Looks like you re lost in your thoughts, Karen said. Jodi walked up Karen s ramp and settled in next to her on the porch swing. Do you think angels are real? Jodi asked. I mean, can an angel tell you something true? Karen smiled. It depends. Who do you think angels are? Well... Jodi thought for a minute. I guess they re messengers from God. Did this angel tell you something that is true to what God would say? Jodi stretched her long legs. I think so. He said God would give me everything I needed, because God cares for me. Karen bit her lower lip and then stroked her useless legs. That sounds like a message from God, all right. It makes me think of God s providence. Providence? Jodi asked. Yes, Karen said. God gives us what is best for us. Jodi stared Karen s legs. Not your accident! No, not the accident itself, Karen said. But gradually, after I realized I d never walk again, I gave my life to God. And God has been awesome to me, bringing me friends and helpers. So God turned something bad into something good. Often I think I m happier now than when I could walk and do everything on my own. Jodi nodded. My mom and my new baby brother need help. And so do I help to be a friend to Chong and a big sister to Joe. So, Karen said, what will you do? Not be so afraid. Paco must have been a messenger after all. 62
