1 The Prophet As you read this Winter edition of The Prophet, preparations are in full swing for observing the next major Jewish holiday of Purim. Our Next Dor students are eginning an elective that will have them planning a Purim Shpiel to be presented as part of our Purim Family Service (& Dinner) on March 2. Several folks have signed up to read a piece of the Megillah at our Adult-Focused Purim service and event on the evening of February 28. If you d like to participate with a few lines of the Megillah, be in touch with Rachel Petroff Kessler in the office. We are also collaborating in the communitywide JFHC Purim Palooza which Rabbi Plotkin is helping to coordinate. This year, we are trying a truly new approach with all of the religious schools of the Howard County congregations holding their program AT the Purim Palooza, followed by the fun event itself. I hope to see folks of all ages there on February 25 th. Every year we celebrate the same holidays, though we ourselves are just a little different. The lens through which we see the holiday is impacted by the personal, communal and national events of the year that has passed between. It would be very hard to ignore some specific truths about our approach to Purim this year. Purim is, after all, the story of a ruthless and brutal individual who is set on having his way whenever and however he wants (Haman), utilizing the power structure of a government which is fairly unmoved by the actions of this powerful man so long as the money is coming in and the present power structure is not being challenged (King Achashveirosh). And it all comes tumbling down through the efforts of a truth-telling powerhouse of a feminist role model, one who risks her very own safety and security in a desire to spare others from exploitation and worse (Esther). Through this lens, the parallels to this past year s focus on the courageous work of the #MeToo Movement cannot be denied. It has taken a long time far too long from every viewpoint. But, as the movement to change this reality has claimed, time s up. I have watched with humility and respect as one Esther after another has risen some of them coming from a place of privilege and power, and others from the very opposite side of the spectrum and called out their Haman. For generations we have tended to excuse, deny, try to suppress or explain away the bad behaviors, or otherwise marginalize those who were courageous enough to come forth with their stories of abuse. No more. Just as the biblical Esther brought about light and gladness, joy and honor, so too in our day does the light of justice need to shine. ~~Rabbi Continued on Next Page Shevat/Adar 5778 Winter Prophet 2018 At Temple Isaiah This Month Friday, February 2 Camp Shabbat Service Saturday, February 3 Torah Study Friday, February 9 Shabbat Service 8pm 9am 8pm Saturday, February 10 Torah Study 9am Tot Shabbat 10:30am Friday, February 16 Choir Shabbat Service Saturday, February 17 Torah Study Friday, February 23 Family Shabbat Service Saturday, February 24 Torah Study 8pm 9am 7pm 9am Wednesday, February 28 Purim Service 8pm Friday, March 2 Purim Shabbat Service 7pm Saturday, March 3 Torah Study 9am B nai Mitvzah Paige 10am McPhillips/Chaz McPhillips Friday, March 9 Choir Shabbat 8pm Saturday, March 10 Torah Study 9am Frajerman Bar Mitzvah 10am Tot Shabbat 10:30am

2 There is, though, one particularly bitter element to this moment. As a Jewish man, it is impossible not to notice the extraordinarily large number of Jewish men who have been accused (or admitted to) these terrible and despicable acts for decades. It has been argued that this is the result of the high percentage of Jews involved in the arenas of politics, media, academia and business where the most high profile incidents are found. And while there may be some truth to this, I can t help but wonder if that is the whole story. It is a question that I am committed to continuing in discussion, as we look for ways to help each other and (most importantly) our young sons grow up into the best kind of mensches that this world needs so desperately kind of Mordechai-mensches, supporting, partnering with and celebrating the strong Esthers in their lives. As Justice Louis Brandeis coined the phrase: Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants; electric light the most efficient policeman. More light; more gladness. This conversation is clearly only beginning. L Shalom With Blessings for Peace, Rabbi Craig Axler

4 from the President Social action seems to be trending as a household word around the world and throughout our Jewish community. We are living in a time of intolerance, violence and injustice, and people want change. The idea of Tikkun Olam as a movement for justice and righteousness (tzedakah) and loving acts of kindness (chesed) has always been a part of Jewish values and is the essence of the Reform Movement and our Jewish community. The Religious Action Center (RAC) of the Reform Movement stands strong in its mission toward social action and reminds us that in the Torah, Jews are taught to accept others, without prejudice or bias. Judaism also teaches the importance of working with others in the community to achieve social justice. Rabbi Jonah Pesner, Director of RAC, passionately emphasizes that we, as a Jewish community, have the empowerment to move for social justice and change, embracing the deep meaning of Hineni, the giving of oneself. Temple Isaiah embraces the true spirit of Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, and we can proudly say Hineni with the many programs and initiatives we partake in. Hineni. As Jews, it is our responsibility to help the stranger as we were strangers in the land of Egypt. Temple Isaiah s work includes, but is not limited to, hosting the homeless Cold Weather Shelter for one week every year; TI congregants volunteer at The Elizabeth House food kitchen in Laurel; and our congregants provide food and services weekly to the Grassroots Day Resource Center. Additionally, Temple Isaiah raises money for local organizations such as HopeWorks, Grassroots and DreamBuilders. Hineni. As Jews, it is our responsibility not to be silent and to act when there is injustice. Temple Isaiah s work includes, but is not limited to, participating in Advocacy Day in Annapolis, plus TI s commitment to host a Syrian refugee family. Hineni. As Jews, it is our responsibility to be proximate with those outside of our community and build relationships and seek understanding of those who are not like us. Temple Isaiah s work includes, but is not limited to, participating in Soul to Soul and forging relationships with the Ahmadiyya Movement of Islam and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Hineni. As Jews, it is our responsibility to work to better our existence and that of future generations. Temple Isaiah s work includes TI2020 Social Action Task Force that will work for social justice initiatives to better our community now and in the future. Temple Isaiah s work includes many other acts of Tikkun Olam and TI will continue to support social injustice. I encourage everyone s involvement at Temple Isaiah to help empower our Jewish community as a force in repairing the world. As Rabbi Pesner has said, The sea only parts when we get into the water together. L Shalom, Donna

8 Religious School Seattle Reflections I recently returned from the Annual Gathering of the Association of Reform Jewish Educators held in Seattle. This Annual Gathering is a time of great learning, networking with colleagues and spending time with friends old and new. As a part of the planning committee, I got a little more of an inside look while still having a great experience. I want to share some of what I experienced and learned here. The formal part of the conference kicked off with a great keynote by Tamara Kleinberg, one of the leading thinkers in the country on what it means to be innovative. As she gave all present a chance to hear her thoughts, she also challenged us with the mantra of jump on 2 based on a time she faced her fears while bungee jumping and was so determined that she jumped on 2 instead of the normal 3. She explained that new things are scary, but it is important that we make the jump, or we will be left behind (she showed a slide of logos from companies like Pan-Am, Circuit City and Radio Shack to drive the point home). The gathering continued in this vein, focusing on the idea of innovation as a verb, finding the freedom to fail and working together to gain buy in from all interested parties. For the last part, that means asking different questions not: do you like this?, but rather, what can we do together to make this work? I know as we continue forward with the new innovations for the religious school, I will be counting on asking that question and then truly hearing the answer many times. With any conference, it is pointless if you don t go out and see the city a bit. Everyone in attendance had a chance to see a great improv comedy show in a theater located along Seattle s infamous gum wall and on Tuesday afternoon we split up for field trips around town, including chances for attendees to see Boeing, an innovative high school, the Pacific Science Center, and more. I went to Seattle s Museum of History and Industry, which is funded in large part by Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon. The focus of this museum is the question of what makes Seattle such a place of innovation. What I noticed is that Seattle was never willing to rest on the way things always have been. After a fire devastated down town Seattle in the late 1890 s, the city leaders didn t try to rebuild as it was, but to do it better, with a unified water supply, wider streets, more open spaces. That spirit of figuring out how to do it better has been part of Seattle s attitude ever since then. On the social side of the conference, it was amazing to see old friends, including one friend with whom I used to carpool to Hebrew School! I also got to be a part of celebrations honoring the ARJE Executive Director, Rabbi Stanley Schickler, for his 18 years of service to the organization. Rabbi Schickler, for those who don t recall, was one of my early influences as a young teen and came to TI in 2016 to be present for my installation as Rabbi Educator. As is often the case, I learned much from these informal times, as the conversation is often free flowing about what we do that is different, where we have challenges and a chance to hear how others have overcome similar challenges. Some of what you ll see coming to our Religious School program will be coming directly from such conversations. I am grateful that TI gives me the opportunity to attend the Annual Gathering of the ARJE each year, I gain so much from it and pass it on to the TI community. Next year I will be there, but my trip won t be nearly as long as I get to bypass the airport and drive right into Washington, DC, for another outstanding gathering. ~~Rabbi Daniel Plotkin

Soon after the funeral, we reached out to several grief groups, both Jewish and non-jewish. We joined a group that was sponsored by Jewish Community Services, under the auspices of Levinson s Funeral home in Pikesville. The weekly meetings were held in Columbia. This grief group was specifically for parents who had lost an adult child, and the group leader was Donna Kane. There were a total of 6 parents. At the end of the 8 weeks of grief counseling, as the 6 of us started to leave, we looked at each other: no one wanted the group to end. We all wanted to continue with the camaraderie and the empathetic support we gave to each other. It has now been 2-1/2 years of monthly dinners for the 6 of us. We have a bond and a friendship that will last forever all because of Donna Kane and the wonderful counseling sessions she ran. We made a donation to Temple Isaiah last year in Memory of our Debbie. This year, we are making our donation in Honor of Donna Kane. A note from Rabbi Axler: Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of the Goldmans, we are in the process of replacing and modernizing the video equipment in our sanctuary. This will enable us to more easily capture high quality digital of our services and events as well as webcast certain events and services. Look for more information soon on these updates.
