1 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE AUGUST 2014 Dear Congregants, I would like to begin our newsletter with one of my favorite stories about an old man who carried a little can of oil with him everywhere he went, and if he passed through a door that squeaked, he poured a little oil on the hinges. If a gate was hard to open, he oiled the latch. And thus he passed through life lubricating all hard places and making it easier for everyone around him. With that in mind, I hope that you frequently access your Temple Bet Emet newsletter. Now that it is online this is much easier to do. Hopefully, you check the starting time of services, the scheduling of special events, and reminders of upcoming yahrzeits of loved ones. If so, you know this is a special newsletter; and I have an exceptional message for you to consider. "Ask not what Temple Bet Emet can do for you: ask what you can do for Temple Bet Emet." Thank you, President John F Kennedy, for popularizing this quote from Oliver Wendell Holmes. Also, a special thanks to each of you for carrying your little can of oil at all times to make things run well at Temple Bet Emet. At this time, we need volunteers to help with the Oneg Shabbats and to usher at our Friday night services and the High Holidays. Most important, we are still seeking women to take a vigorous role in Sisterhood. We are in need of a President, and as before, it can be Co-Presidents, and a Programming Vice President. We need your assistance, your creative power and your commitment. The Temple is so fortunate, and I feel so blessed, to have such a wonderful Fund Raising Committee--Nan Birnbaum, Idele Kaplan and Betty Pardo--who are planning two fantastic events. They will be sending out the details and I am hoping they will be able to count on a wonderful response and participation from our congregation. I hope you will be joining our Temple Family in another wonderful year of High Holiday worship with our wonderful Rabbi Craig and lovely talented Cantor Lola with her beautiful voice and her accompanists. Be'Shalom Janet Seidel 1

3 FROM THE RABBI'S DESK Av/Elul - August / 5774 Love and Rebirth The 15 th of Av is undoubtedly the most mysterious day of the Jewish calendar. A search of the Shulchan Aruch ( Code of Jewish Law ) reveals no observances or customs for this date, except for the instruction that the tachanun (confession of sins) and similar portions should be omitted from the daily prayers, and that beginning on the 15 th of Av one should increase one s study of Torah, since at this time of the year the nights begin to grow longer; the Talmud says the night was created for study, and the month of Elul approaches, the month in which we begin to prepare ourselves spiritually for the coming of Rosh Ha-Shanah, and a new year. The Talmud also tells us that many years ago the daughters ofjerusalem would go dance in the vineyards on the 15 th of Av, and whoever did not have a wife would go there to find himself a bride. And this is the day which the Talmud considers the greatest festival of the year, with Yom Kippur a close second! Indeed, the 15 th of Av cannot but be a mystery. As the full moon of the tragic month of Av, it is the festival of the Future Redemption, and thus a day whose essence, by definition, is unknowable to our unredeemed selves. But because it is unknowable, it is demanded of us, both spiritually and psychologically that we must seek, explore, learn and know. Indeed, the 15 th of Av, that one day, is a microcosm of our entire lifetime: As human beings, we have only one mandate given to us; by God, spirit, or whatever name you wish to give to the powers in the universe that are beyond our comprehension: that over our lives, we are to seek, to figure out what our purpose here is; to explore, to go after our purpose; to learn, to embrace our purpose; and to know our purpose, to be at one with God. As we learn then at the end of Yom Tov, we reach atonement / at-one-ment with God. Hodesh Tov / A Good Month, Rabbi Craig 3
