2 From the Executive Director Doug Morton Can you believe summer is here again! The good news, this is also the time we have our summer socials! We are going to Kaiser Grille, Eight4Nine and Sammy G s... see the box to the right for dates. These are always fun so mark your calendars and join us! Also, this is a great event to bring prospective members! Have you checked out our new website Same address, exciting new look, thanks to Jeff Diebley, Rabbi Lazar, Andrea Newland at Nesteggg and Larea Pettersen, who have spent countless hours helping to design and make this work. Some of the major differences (just to name a few) on our new website: Ability to view your own account, what you owe and what you ve paid right on line (only your own information) You ll be able to edit your own profile including address, phone number(s) and yahrzeits Online Temple Directory (only available to members with a sign in) We will be sending out an - hopefully even before you read this - with directions how to set up your password. If you don t have the information by midmonth, call and let us help you get up and running. Even if you didn t see Yossi and Jagger last month, come join Twice Blessed on Wednesday June 15 at 7:00 pm for Yossi, the story of a closeted gay man in Israeli society. (While the film Yossi follows after the first movie, they are separate stories, so do come on the 15 th if you can). These Twice Blessed events are great evenings... come see a good movie, have time to mingle, and more. You can sign up ahead of time or just pay when you come to the door. Members: only $5; guests: $10. M e m b e r s h i p renewal packets are coming out shortly and there is an early bird discount if paid by July 15. Even though our dues are going up 10%, this is the first increase in many years. We have all committed to do what it takes to make our congregation strong. The dues we get now only cover approximately 30% of our costs. Please consider upgrading your membership, if at all possible. We look forward to your continued support through your membership. Hope to see you all at and at our Summer Socials! Shalom, Doug

3 From the Rabbi s Study Rabbi David Lazar We will soon celebrate the festival of Shavuot which marks the culmination of the seven weeks of counting the Omer since Pessah, Passover. In the biblical tradition, this was purely an occasion to celebrate the completion of the grain harvest - at that time, first barley, then wheat - and to begin looking forward to giving thanks for the first fruits of the trees - again, at that time, figs, pomegranates, dates, olives and grapes - throughout the summer months. It wasn t until Sukkot, the Feast of Booths, that the entire harvest was celebrated and that all eyes were turned toward heaven in prayer for, and in expectation of, rain. So then, Shavuot was only a partial celebration of harvest and thanksgiving, and while the stressful period of the grain harvest was over, there was still a lot of work to do, and much to look forward to. This is our first year anniversary, members of Temple Isaiah and myself and it s been a most wonderful year! I have felt both professionally fulfilled and greatly appreciated over the last 12 months. In a way, this time of year is a celebration of our harvest together, all that we have accomplished together. Yet, we have just begun and know that there is much work to do as there is so much to look forward to! But there is another reason behind the Shavuot celebration - this was the time of year when the Israelites received the Torah from God through Moses at Mt. Sinai. It didn t surface until sometime between the end of the biblical age and the beginning of the rabbinic period, but with time, and as a result of Jews living around the world, very often unable to own and farm their own land, this became the primary focus of the holiday. You may know of the custom to stay up all night studying Torah a sort of reenacting of the ancient event, or perhaps that of reading the book of Ruth, a story that reaffirms the idea that our tradition of the covenant with God being open to all who choose to be included therein. Perhaps then, it s most appropriate that we celebrate our one-year anniversary on Shavuot. We are surely a community that is welcoming to all who seek out our tradition and choose to become part of the Jewish people. Our openness to all who walk through our doors and wish to study our tradition attests to our spirit of inclusivity. And we are also a congregation of learners - our active participation in ongoing classes and courses, seasonal lectures and events like the Film Festival and our Twice The Giving of the Torah, in Jewish Customs handbook, Amsterdam, 1708, Gross Family Collection, Tel Aviv Blessed series, shows that we are a congregation that loves to learn and expand our Jewish horizons. We will be adding even more opportunities for intellectual growth in the season to come. In addition to our Philip & Eleanor Short Lecture Series in partnership with UC Riverside, we will be offering an exciting new series this year, through a generous grant from our local Jewish Federation, entitled Judaism For the 21st Century, in which some of the most provocative contemporary rabbis will present new approaches to prayer, God and Jewish Mysticism. We have recently received a multi-year commitment from our member Harold Clumeck for an annual four-part series - Psalm Springs in memory of his life-partner, Jerry Behrend. We are building on the success of a mini-series that we offered together with the Church of St. Paul in the Desert and I will be inviting local Christian clergy to teach, together with me, their favorite psalms. After the success of our ten-part series in which we read Rabbi Arthur Green s little book, we will continue this coming season with Reading with the Rabbi that will offer participants a chance to read - in a guided and augmented fashion - a noteworthy offering from the world of Jewish literature. These and a number of other courses will be offered throughout the season beginning in September. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks! We might not stay up one night a year, but we certainly keep the Torah study going throughout the year! Both celebrating the harvest - what was and what will be - as well as renewing the covenant of Torah on Shavuot are ancient concepts yet still relevant to us here at Temple Isaiah. For my part, I am truly grateful for a fantastic first year of study, prayer and action. And I renew my commitment to our congregation and to Jewish life in the Palm Springs area. Hag HaShavuot Sameah! Saturday, June 11-8:00 pm WINE, CHEESE & THE STUDY OF THE BOOK OF RUTH Sunday, June 12-10:00 am HOLIDAY SERVICE & YIZKOR
