God also wants you to be a friend to others. God loves you. He wants you to show love. The one who has shown us true love is our best friend, Jesus. God teaches us about love and about making friends through Jesus. Objectives Read these objectives. The objectives tell you what you will be able to do when you have successfully completed this LIFEPAC. 1. You will be able to say six Bible verses and tell where they are found in the Bible. 2. You will be able to tell three or more stories about great Bible friends. 3. You will be able to say the Ten Commandments. 4. 5 GOD GAVE US THE NEED FOR FRIENDS Unit 8 1. WE NEED LOVE From the beginning, God planned for man to have friends. God wanted Adam to have another person as a friend. God knew that Adam needed a person to love. Adam needed someone to love him and help him. God made us to have the need for love and friends. Vocabulary Study these new words. Learning the meanings of these words is a good study habit and will improve your understanding of this LIFEPAC. adultery (u dul tur ē). A husband or wife sharing their special love for each other with another woman or man. bear false witness (bār fôls wit nis). To tell lies. churlish (chėr lish). Unfriendly, hateful, and mean. commandment (ku mand ment). One of the laws God gave to man. commit (ku mit ). To do or perform. covet (kuv it). To want what belongs to someone else. example (eg zam pul). One who shows how we should act. honor (on ur). Have great liking for; to obey, to respect. minister (min u stur). To serve or help. murderer (mėr dur ur). A person who kills another person. ransom (ran sum). The price Jesus paid for sinners. respect (ri spekt ). Do you remember that the first man s name was Adam? God gave Adam a beautiful garden in which to live. He told Adam to take care of the plants and animals in the garden. God made Eve so that Adam would have a friend. Adam walked in the garden, taking care of it and talking with God. God loved Adam, but God is not like man. God knew that Adam needed a person like himself to be his friend. Animals are different from people. They cannot think or talk with someone like another person can. God said, It is not good for man to be alone. I will make a helper for him. Section 1 5

7 GOD GAVE US THE NEED FOR FRIENDS Unit 8 God put Adam into a special sleep. Then, he took a rib from Adam s side and made it into the very first woman. When Adam woke up, he was very happy. I am so happy that God gave me a wife, Adam said. My wife, Eve, will be my friend and helper. We can learn about love from God because He loves us so much. God made us to live together and have children. We will be perfect friends because we will love and help one another always. Write the correct word from the list on each line. God told people to be neighbors and love one another. God did not tell just husbands and wives to love one another. Jesus said, Love thy neighbor as thyself. This verse means that you should love other people as much as you love yourself. Read this story about David and Jonathan. My name is Jonathan. My father is King Saul. When my father dies, I should be king because the oldest son always takes his father s place as king. This time God has chosen David to be king when my father dies. My father hates David. He has tried more than once to kill David. My father s actions make me very sad. God has put a love in my heart for David. I will always do what I can to protect him. David loves God, as I do. David loves me, and I know that David will always be my friend. God will not let my father kill David because some day David will be king. He will be a good king because he is brave and he loves God. David and Jonathan could love one another because they loved God. You can have the right kind of love for people only when you love God. Section 1 11
