2 FROM THE RABBI Welcoming the Stranger RABBI RABBI ETHAN WITKOVSKY Last month I completed my first High Holidays as assistant rabbi at PAS. Thank you to the entire community for making the holidays an enjoyable and meaningful experience for me! It was my first High Holidays as a rabbi here, but not my first High Holidays at Park Avenue Synagogue. My first year at JTS, I stayed in New York City for Rosh Hashanah. I was new in town; I had never lived anywhere other than Madison, Wisconsin and Oberlin, Ohio. A college friend invited me to Rosh Hashanah services and dinner at her parents house on the Upper East Side. Inexperienced in navigating around Manhattan, I got so lost that I gave up hope of finding the house. In my plight, having given up on dinner, and given up on services, just looking for any place to rest before the long walk back to 122nd and Broadway, I stumbled upon the Park Avenue Synagogue. More accurately, I stumbled into a group of young adults standing outside of the synagogue. Perhaps they could tell I was frazzled by the way I looked; as I walked by, one of them asked if I was all right. I stopped and explained my troubles, and as they were trying to help me find my way, I offered them some of the apples and honey I had been bringing to the meal I would never find. One of the PAS young women asked, What, are you Chabad? To which I replied, No, I am a rabbinical student at JTS. Her immediate response: Oh my God, my mother will love you! I then went inside and prayed my first minha/ma'ariv at the Park Avenue Synagogue. The exhortation to not oppress the stranger occurs in the Bible 36 times; welcoming outsiders is one of our core principles. Usually this commandment is qualified that we should not wrong the stranger in our midst because you were strangers in the land of Egypt. The commandment pushes us not merely to kindness but to empathy. Because we know what it is like to be oppressed, we should treat those who are oppressed with care and compassion. In a small way, I know what it is like to be a lost stranger on the Upper East Side. I was lucky to find this synagogue that Rosh Hashanah eight years ago, and I was lucky to find my way back to this synagogue last summer. Thank you, Park Avenue Synagogue, for being warm and welcoming. My wife Erin and I are excited to be a part of this community and look forward to joining you in welcoming others through the years to come. When her daughter attended the PASECC, Leah applied to be an assistant teacher. She so enjoyed being with the children that she enrolled in NYU to earn her MA in Early Childhood Education. Leah says that she was growing and learning in all her years at the ECC, working under three different directors. It was always exciting to spend her days with the children and rewarding to know their parents.
