Introduction Solomon reflects on the meaning of life. His attention now turns to the wise and the foolish. In the last chapter Solomon reminds the reader that wisdom is valuable and wisdom is vulnerable. In spite of wisdom s vulnerabilities it is to be preferred to the dangers of foolishness. The word folly is used 9 times in chapter 10. Now the Preacher describes some individuals (vv.1-7; 12-18; 20); some injuries (vv.8-11; 19); and some insights (v.19). In this chapter the Preacher gives a tribute to wisdom s excellence and warning of folly s danger. The wise person s heart is directed to do what s right (v.2a). The wise person speaks wise words (v.12a). The fool s heart directs them to do evil (v.2b). The fool s conduct betray s the fool s heart (v.3). The fool is often (tragically) given great authority (vv.6-7). The fool is consumed with their own words (vv.12b-14). The fool is exhausted by even the most basic or simple tasks (v.15). What about those who are in authority? The Preacher says; stay calm, don t quit even if your boss is angry with you (v.4). Now the Preacher gives a series of wise words that seem to have a lot in common with the Book of Proverbs. Wisdom is contrasted with foolishness. The Preacher points the reader to live a wise life in all of life s changes and challenges. When you are a hammer everything looks like a nail. And when you are the wisest person who ever lived words like fool, fools, foolish and folly come up quite often. Solomon uses the words a total of 128 times. I read the story of a petty criminal named Rafiq Abdul Mortland. He simply wasn t cut out for a life of crime. 38 years old and he discovered crime made him a wreck. He was dubbed the rolaid s bandit because he committed a string of robberies in Hennepin County Minnesota. Apparently he would demand antacid tablets from store clerks while robbing them; explaining that the job was pretty stressful; robbery gave him a bad case of indigestion. Yes crime and foolishness are both known causes of heartburn and heartache. Wisdom on the other hand, is healthy, has no known ill side effects; and is 100% Doctor recommended. Solomon will talk about foolishness in four prominent areas of life; in the little things (vv.1-3); in leadership (vv.4-7; 16-19); in labor (vv.8-10), and in language (vv.12-14) Foolishness In The Little Things (vv.1-3) Ecclesiastes 10:1 (NKJV) Dead flies putrefy the perfume s ointment, And cause it to give off a foul odor; So does a little folly to one respected for wisdom and honor. The Preacher gives a vivid illustration of how corruption in the little things can leave a lasting odor. 1
The Preacher has access to the world s finest perfumes; and costly spices. He speaks of the seductive power fragrance plays in the arsenal of the prostitute (Prov. 7:17). This is where we get the saying; a fly in the ointment. This is Solomon s poetic way of saying how a tiny foolish act can destroy the powerful fragrance of a person s dignity, respect, character, contributions and reputation. We often wonder how the Politician can throw away a congressional seat or a place in Government for something so stupid, so avoidable. And of course there is the minister. Richard s Nixon s defeat to John Kennedy began when a live TV camera caught some perspiration on his upper lip and five-o Clock shadow. Over and over giants are brought down by little foolish things. In 1859 at the age of 24 Charles Haddon Spurgeon preached a sermon entitled Little Sins : The best of men have always been afraid of little sins...men, with their eyes well opened by divine grace, have seen a whole hell slumbering in the smallest sin. Gifted with a microscopic power, their eyes have seen a world of iniquity hidden in a single act, or thought, or imagination of sin; and hence they have avoided it with horror--have passed by and would have nothing to do with it...little sins lead to great ones...nay, stand back! Little though the temptation be, I dread thee, for thy little temptation be, I dread thee, for thy little temptation leads to something greater, and thy small sin makes way for something worse. Years ago there was not a single thistle in the whole of Australia. Some Scotsman who very much admired thistles--rather more than I do--thought it was a pity that a great island like Australia should be without that marvelous and glorious symbol of his great nation. He, therefore, collected a packet of thistle seeds, and sent it over to one of his friends in Australia. Well, when it was landed, the officers might have said, Oh let it in; is it not a little one? Here is but a handful of thistle down; oh let it come in; it will be sown in a garden--the Scotch will grow it in their gardens; they think it a fine flower, do doubt--let them have it, it is but meant for their amusement. Ah, yes, it was but a little one; but now whole districts of country are covered with it and it has become the farmers pest and plague. It was a little one; but all the worst for that, it multiplied and grew. If it had been a great evil, all men would have set to work to crush it...take heed of the thistle seed, little sins are like it. Take care they are not admitted into your heart. A small look; a little glance; a passing little flirtation; a little edge on the tone of the voice; a little padding on the expense account; a little experimentation in the wrong area; it s just a little thing. Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NKJV) A wise man s heart is at his right hand, But a fool s heart at his left. In the ancient times the right was the place of power and honor and glory. Obedience in the little things means we begin in the place of power and wisdom. 2
Small decisions have big outcomes: For want of a nail, the shoe was lost; For want of a shoe, the horse was lost; For want of a horse; the rider was lost; For want of a rider; the battle was lost; For want of a battle; the kingdom was lost; And all for the want of a horseshoe nail. You would think such a thing would be impossible. The clamp on a hose causes an ambulance to overheat and get to the hospital. Can you imagine Jesus in the wilderness; overcome by hunger; and the devil says; why not turn this stone into bread? Its such a small thing. A spotless lamb--would now be a spotted lamb. No atonement for sin, no salvation. What about your life? What is the little nail, the tiny crust of bread, the small temptation that lurks in your life? According to Solomon the one who takes the bait and plays the fool ends in destruction. Hortius Bonar wrote; A holy life is made up of a multitude of small things. It is the little things of the hour and not the great things of the age that fill up a life like that of the apostles Paul or John David Brainerd or Henry Martyn. Little words, not eloquent speeches or sermons; little deeds, not miracles or battles, or one great heroic effort or martyrdom, make up the true holy life. Ask God to help you make the right little decisions. Ecclesiastes 10:3 (NKJV) Even when a fool walks along the way, He lacks wisdom, And he shows everyone that he is a fool. Foolishness In Leadership (vv.4-7; 16-19) Ecclesiastes 10:4 (NKJV) If the spirit of the ruler rises against you, Do not leave your post; For conciliation pacifies great offenses. The picture is of a leader who shouts and screams at everyone around him; a verbal abuser; who thinks everyone exists to serve him. He thinks he is above everyone else, and he has the right to oppress them with cruel language. Rudyard Kipling wrote; If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you...you ll be a man my son. 3
One of the great dangers is the blind leading the blind. We have to choose our leaders carefully. We all look to leadership in our government, our church, our family. Solomon left a legacy of wise leadership for his sons; but they refused to follow Solomon s leading. The books of 1 and 2 Kings are studies in some wise but mostly foolish leadership. When the king was morally wise; when they listened and obeyed the Lord; things went well. When they refused to be morally wise and refused to listen to the Lord; things went bad. When the king was careless, heartless, ruthless, foolish, the entire nation paid the price. In a 1954 speech, Winston Churchill reflected on his leadership during WWII when he rallied the British Isles to withstand the Nazi threat. He said, I have never accepted what many people have kindly said, namely, that I inspired the nation. It was the nation and the race dwelling around the globe that had the lion heart. I had the luck to be called upon to give the roar. Leaders Who Appoint The Unqualified Ecclesiastes 10:5 (NKJV) There is an evil I have seen under the sun, As an error proceeding from the ruler: Foolish leaders put the unqualified into positions of leadership; while ignoring those who should be serving. Strong leaders surround themselves with strong people; weak leaders with weak people. Ecclesiastes 10:6 (NKJV) Folly is set in great dignity, While the rich sit in a lowly place. Peter Drucker made the observation that there is little correlation between a leader s effectiveness and his or her intelligence, imagination or knowledge. Brilliant people are sometimes very ineffective leaders; Druker writes; They never have learned that insights become effectiveness only through hard systematic work. Ecclesiastes 10:7 (NKJV) I have seen servants on horses, While princes walk on the ground like servants. Foolishness In Labor (vv.8-11) Ecclesiastes 10:8 (NKJV) He who digs a pit will fall into it, And whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a serpent. We ve all heard the expression work smarter not harder. Solomon has little sympathy for the foolish, ignorant, and ineffective laborer. No one would really dig a hole for a swimming pool and then fall into his own pit right? 4
I heard the story of someone tasked to be a pall bearer and he fell into the grave; it was one of those double graves; where the caskets where placed one on top of the other. He fell into the pit and landed with a thud on top of the casket already in the hole. It s important to watch where your walking or you might wind up prematurely in the wrong place. The chapter describes individuals (the wise and the fool); and now the chapter touches on injuries. There is a series of warnings; digging a well, lest you fall into it (v.8a) demolishing an old wall, lest a snake bite you (v.8b); Snakes love to make their homes in cool places when it is hot; and hot places when it is cool. The worker forgets. Serpents and snakes of all sorts are lurking nearby. The wise worker keeps a careful eye out for danger. Ecclesiastes 10:9 (NKJV) He who quarries stones may be hurt by them, And he who splits wood may be endangered by it. working a quarry, lest stones crush you (v.9a) chopping wood, lest the ax strike you (v.9b-10). Solomon was in charge of the building project. 80,000 people were tasked to quarry stone for the new temple. 1 Kings 5:17-18; And the king commanded them to quarry large stones, costly stones, and hewn stones, to lay the foundation of the temple. So Solomon s builders, Hiram s builders, and the Gebalites quarried them; and they prepared timber and stones to build the temple. I am pretty sure they did not have Temple Unions. One of the 80,000 workers probably suffered some set back. Can you imagine the king hearing the news that another person died building the temple? How did it happen? Moses anticipated the man chopping wood; Deut. 19:5; When a man goes to the woods with his neighbor to cut timber, and his hand swings a stroke with the ax to cut down a tree, and the head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor so that he dies--he shall flee to one of these cities of refuge and live. Is it possible to have an accident on the job and someone dies? You Might Be A Fool If... Ecclesiastes 10:11 (NKJV) 11 The babbler is no different. A serpent may bite when it is not charmed; In Solomon s court he may have had snake charmers. But sometimes the snake bites. In Ecclesiastes 3 Solomon said there is a time to speak--and a time to refrain from speaking. 5
The philospher Zeno said, We have two ears and one mouth; therefore we should listen twice as much as we talk. Could rule of tongue. Foolish Language (vv.12-14a) Ecclesiastes 10:12 (NKJV) The words of a wise man s mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up; Proverbs 10:32 The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked what is perverse. Most of the really bad things that happen in our life begin because we said something foolish. James says we can control a horse or a boat with something as small as a bridle or a rudder. Not so with the human tongue. Clearly speech can be used for good or evil. Robert Frost: half the world is composed of people who have something to say and can t, and the other half who have nothing to say and keep on saying it. Nothing is more frequently opened by mistake than the human mouth. Jesus said, A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things (Matt. 12:35). If there is one place we can spot foolishness it is in the language that people use. Ecclesiastes 10:13-14 (NKJV) 13 The words of his mouth begin with foolishness, And the end of his talk is raving madness. 14 A fool also multiplies words. No man knows what is to be; Who can tell him what will be after him? Solomon has talked about the untamed tongue (v.11); the unkind tongue (v.12); and now he speaks of the unwise tongue (v.13) and the unreasonable tongue (v.14). Some people love the sound of their own voice. Roxanne Lulofs labels an undisciplined talker as HARM hit and run mouth. Grave stone for the hit and run mouth; Beneath this stone, a lump of clay, LIES Arrabella Young, Who on the 24th of May, Began to hold her tongue. Solomon speaks of the person who pretends and forecast s the future and gets lost on his way to work. These are people who have little sense of direction for their own lives but feel obligated to point you in the right direction. Over and over again Solomon says, For who can bring him to see what will happen after him (Eccl. 3:22). Proverbs Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth (27:1). 6
I heard the story of a man who was trying to get a drink of coke and he died when the coke machine fell on top of him! Or the Toronto lawyer named Gary Hoy who was demonstrating the safety of windows in a downtown Toronto skyscraper--he crashed through a pane with his shoulder and plunged 24 floors into the courtyard of the Toronto Dominion Bank Tower. He had been explaining the strength of the building s windows to visiting law students; Ken Charles Barger accidently shot himself to death in Newton North Carolina; he was in bed when the phone rang and he reached instead for a Smith and Wesson.38 which discharged when he drew it to his ear. A news story told of 6 people who drowned while trying to rescue a chicken that had fallen into a well in southern Egypt. An 18 year old farmer was the first to descend into the 60 foot well; he drowned apparently after an undercurrent in the water pulled him in. His sister and two brothers; none of whom could swim well went in one by one to help him. Two elderly farmers came to help; but were pulled in by the same undercurrent. The bodies of the 6 were pulled out of a well in the village of Nazlat Imara, south of Cairo. The chicken was also pulled out. It survivied! Solomon--when using your hands, use your head. Ecclesiastes 10:16-17 (NKJV) Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child, And your princes feast in the morning! 17 Blessed are you, O land, when your king is the son of nobles, And your princes feast at the proper time For strength and not for drunkenness! Solomon has mentioned the easygoing leader (vv.5-7); and now he speaks of the engineered leader. One translation has this; Unlucky the land whose king is a young pup, and whose princes party all night. Lucky the land whose king is mature, where the princes behave themselves and don t drink themselves silly (MSG). Dynastic kings were common. Some people acquire office with the help of family and friends. Their leadership is orchestrated, arranged or negotiated. They don t have a clue to what they are doing and so they wind up doing very little. They should be working in the morning, not feasting. The government, the church the family is at a disadvantage when leaders are immature and incompetent. Do you want to know how to identify the mature leader? They assume responsibility when things go wrong. Procrastination And Poor Judgment (vv.18-19) Ecclesiastes 10:18 (NKJV) Because of laziness the building decays, And through idleness of hands the house leaks. 7
We live in a world where it is easy to stay home, drink beer, watch TV; but the house is starting to fall apart; the only thing growing are his debt and his belly. Solomon has no sympathy for the lazy person. How do you think God views the lazy? Over and over the Bible warns against the lazy, the slothful, and promises blessing for the hard working and the diligent. Ecclesiastes 10:19 (NKJV) A feast is made for laughter, And wine makes merry; But money answers everything. The preacher adds a note about the evil leader. Criticism And Confidentiality (v.20) Ecclesiastes 10:20 (NKJV) Do not curse the king, even in your thought; Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom; For a bird of the air may carry your voice, And a bird in flight may tell the matter. Solomon has warned about; the untamed tongue; the unkind tongue, the unwise tongue, the unreasonble tongue (vv.14-15); and now the unfaithful tongue (v.20). This is where the expression a little bird told me comes from. Bird s don t talk. Solomon is saying--a wise person doesn t say in private something that he or she doesn t want heard in public. WIKI-LEAKS Counsel When Dealing With Fools Proverbs 14:7 (NKJV) Go from the presence of a foolish man, When you do not perceive in him the lips of knowledge. If a person continues to act like a fool--leave. Sometimes words, encouragement and affirmation do no good. Sometimes leaving isn t possible. But if at all possible isolate yourself from foolish people. Psalm 107 If there is true repentance...restoration. When there is restoration...proclamation (Ps. 107:2, 8, 21-22). The testimony of former fools can be helpful; wisdom is a lesson often learned in hard circumstances; and their deliverance speaks of the saving power of God. 8
