2 OT 500 Old Testament Survey Dr. Veas 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: The general objec.ve of this course is to understand the message of the Old Testament and to be introduced to some of its basic scholarly issues in a way that is relevant to urban ministry. The course is based on the belief that Jesus is the Messiah who came as the culmina.on of the plan of God for the redemp.on of the world. Accordingly, we will first set the OT in the context of biblical theology and then study each individual book with an awareness of the broader themes being conveyed by the OT as a whole. This course is a part of the Masters of Divinity and Master of Arts in Religion as offered through Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary s Hispanic Ministries Program. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon comple.on of this class the student will: 1. Grow in love for the OT as we experience its authority in our lives 2. Achieve a basic understanding of the message of the OT 3. Increase our ability to teach the OT to urban people 4. Be aware of basic OT scholarly issues GRADING: Breakdown 1. AWendance at all class sessions is cri.cal to the learning process. Students have a half-day (1/2) unexcused absence without penalty. Lateness to either half of the class sessions count as ¼ absence. Class par.cipa.on enhances the learning process by making space for the diverse voices of knowledge and experiences of the students to become shared wisdom of the community.

Failure to read the material will affect the student s comprehension of the lectures and capacity to par.cipate during class sessions. The awached reading log must be submi<ed with the final paper. Please note that class lectures do not summarize or review the readings due. Rather, they assume that the reading has been done and build on it. Reading Journal 10 points You should keep a journal for your NT and class readings that should be a comprised of a minimum of four entries. Each entry should be a minimum of two paragraphs and is due at the beginning of class. As you reflect on the readings you can address the following types of ques.ons: o What stood out in the text? o What challenged you in the text, in regards to what you previously understood? o How does this reading interact with the lecture materials? Students should read the following before the first class session: o Gundry (Ch. 1-8) o MaWhew & Mark Academic Paper 60 points This paper is due on July 10th. Students will write a page research paper based on David. Please address all of the following prompts: o Who was David and what did he accomplish? o Address the world in which David lived. o Describe the Davidic Covenant and its messianic implica.ons. Requirements : Thesis Statements - clearly state the posi.on that you will argue for in each of the prompts listed above. Biblical and Theological Analysis - address parallels, contrasts, etc., from the Scriptures that may speak to the issue. Basic exege.cal considera.ons (including historical, linguis.c, theological analysis using key word studies, commentaries, etc.), must be incorporated. Footnotes u.lize the Turabian style as you provide documenta.on of your sources. If necessary, you may use endnotes instead. Works Cited - provide a minimum of fiieen (15) sources. At least five (5) of these should be nonreference texts on the issue. While there is no maximum amount required, awen.on should be paid to the use of primary sources. On-line, open-source reference tools are not to be included in the bibliography. Appendix include worksheets and reference materials that demonstrate your research and wri.ng process. Charts, graphs, data, quan.ta.ve research, surveys, important material from primary sources, etc.
