3 John 1:19-24 This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, I am not the Messiah. And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? (Malachi 4:5) He said, I am not. Are you the prophet? (Deuteronomy 18:18). He answered, No. Then they said to him, Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? He said, I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. (Isaiah 40:3)

4 John 1:25-28 They asked him, Why then are you baptising if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet? John answered them, I baptise with water. (see Acts 19:1-4) Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal. (Mark 1:7) This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing.

5 Scene 2 Further The testimony of the Baptist (1:29-34) The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said (see John 1:15), After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me. I myself did not know him; but I came baptising with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel. And John testified, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptise with water said to me, He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptises with the Holy Spirit. (see John 20:21-22)

6 John 1:34 And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God. John 20:31 These are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. Mark 1:1 The beginning of the good news of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.

7 Scene 3. The Baptist introduces his disciples to Jesus John 1:35-39 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, Look, here is the Lamb of God! The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, What are you looking for? Jesus first words! They said to him, Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are you staying? He said to them, Come and see. They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o clock in the afternoon.

8 Scene 4. Disciples gather to Jesus 1:40-51)

9 Andrew introduces Simon (John 1:40-42) One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, We have found the Messiah (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas (which is translated Peter).

10 Jesus calls Philip (John 1:43-44) The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, Follow me. Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Mark1:29 As soon as they left the Capernaum synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew.

11 Philip invites Nathanael (John 1:45-46) Philip found Nathanael and said to him, We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth. Nathanael said to him, Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see.

12 Jesus and Nathanael (John 1:47-50) When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit! Nathanael asked him, Where did you get to know me? Jesus answered, I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you. Nathanael replied, Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel! Jesus answered, Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.

13 John 1:51 Jesus said to him, Very truly, I tell you (plural), you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man. Jesus continuous relationship with his Father Jacob dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. Have them prepare for the third day, because on the third day YHWH will come down upon Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people So Moses went down from the mountain to the people. He consecrated the people, and they washed their clothes. And he said to the people, Prepare for the third day On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, as well as a thick cloud on the mountain, and a blast of a trumpet so loud that all the people who were in the camp trembled Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke, because YHWH had descended upon it in fire; the smoke went up like the smoke of a kiln, while the whole mountain shook violently (Exodus 19:10-18)

17 John 2:1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. For the Lord has called you like a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, like the wife of a man s youth when she is cast off, says your God. For a brief moment I abandoned you, but with great compassion I will gather you. In overflowing wrath for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you, says the Lord, your Redeemer (Isaiah 54:5-8).

18 John 2:1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the Lord delights in you, and your land shall be married. For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you (Isaiah 62:4-5).

19 John 2:1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. I will bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her and she shall respond as in the days of her youth On that day, says the Lord, you will call me, My husband, I will take you for my wife forever; I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. I will take you for my wife in faithfulness; and you shall know the Lord (Hosea 2:14-16,19-20).

20 John 2:1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7,9).

21 John 2:1-4 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? (1Kings 17:18)

22 John 2:4-5 Has not my hour now come. My hour has not now come. οὔπω ἥκει ἡ ὥρα μου. No one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come (7:30). οὔπω ἐληλύθει ἡ ὥρα αὐτοῦ. No one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come (8:20). οὔπω ἐληλύθει ἡ ὥρα αὐτοῦ. The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified (12:23). ἐλήλυθεν ἡ ὥρα His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you.

23 Jesus hour is the hour of his glorification. It comes in its fullness only when Jesus is lifted up on the cross, in the resurrection and when he ascends to enjoy the glory, as Jesus the Incarnate Word, says to his Father which I had in your presence before the world existed (17:5). Only when the hour is fulfilled can Jesus pour out in its fullness the wine of the Spirit. However, while the hour will be fulfilled later, it begins here at Cana in response to the Woman s cry.

24 It is no accident that Jesus mother makes her second appearance when this hour finally comes, where she is presented as the mother of the people of the new covenant (John 19:25-37). At Cana she represents every mother of the old covenant who has longed for the Messiah, and as a mother, instructs her children: Do whatever he tells you.

27 John 2:6-8 Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding eighty to a hundred litres. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it.

28 John 2:9-11 When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have had plenty to drink. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

31 John 2:12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples; and they remained there a few days. Some hold that the ἀδελφοί of Jesus were not his blood brothers, but were either children of an earlier marriage of Joseph (so Epiphanius) or sons of Joseph s brother or Mary s sister (so Jerome). Brown quotes Bernard with approval: It is difficult to understand how the doctrine of the Virginity of Mary could have grown up early in the second century if her four acknowledged sons were prominent Christians, and one of them bishop of Jerusalem.
