2 Mankind Is Condemned For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousnessof men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness (Rom 1:18 NAU) Gentiles Are Condemned in This Way: They Do Not Recognize God and Glorify Him. Either They Deny God s Existence (1:19-20): No Excuse! Or They Put Idols in His Place (1:21-23): Shameful! God Gave Them Over to Their Sinful Nature. Their Body Is Corrupted (1:24-27): To the Unnatural Level! Their Soul Is Corrupted (1:28-32): Having a Depraved Mind! What About the Jews?

3 28 God gave them overto a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful (Rom 1:28-31) Every Faculty of Man Is Corrupted by the Temptations Man = Spirit + Soul + Body Soul = Conscience + Person + Strength Person = Mind + Will + Heart Temptations = Pride + Greed + Fleshliness

5 1 Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. 2 And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. 3 But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? 4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, (Rom 2:1-5 NAU)

6 What Does Therefore Refer to? The General Statement in 1:18-20 on the Wrath of God over All Humanity: God Revealed Himself in the Hearts of Men. They Have No Excuse in Denying Obedience to Him. The List of Vices in 1:28-31 on the Corruption of the Soul: The Gentiles Have Them. The Jews Have Them, Too!

7 Paul Changed from Using 3rd Person Plural ( They in 1:18-32) to 2nd Person Singular ( thou ; You in 2:1-5). This Is the Literary Method of Diatribe. Used by Extrabiblical Authors and Biblical Ones like James. Imaginary Dialogue with a Student or Opponent of Debate. Thou Art Identified by Passing Judgments It Could Mean Self-righteous Gentiles. Most Likely, It Refers to the Jews (cf. 2:17; 3:1): It Is the Context of 2:1 3:8.

8 1 Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. (Rom 2:1) Amos Used Similar Method to Deliver God s Message to Israel: He Condemned the Sins of the Surrounding Nations First: (Aram, Philistia, Phoenicia, Edom, Ammon, Moab, Judah) (Amos 1:3 2:5). When the Israelites Were Giddy in Passing Judgments on Others, the Hammer Came onto Them (Amos 2:6 9:10). If One Knows What Is Wrong When Condemning Others, There Is No Excuse for Doing the Same Thing!

9 Jews Claim That They Do Not Commit the Wickedness the Gentiles Do: Idolatry (1:21-23, 25), and Sexual Perversion (1:24, 26-27), but Honest Jews Cannot Deny the Same Corruption in their Soul (1:28-31). Jesus Required Righteousness at Heart as the Condition to Enter the Kingdom of Heaven: For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. (Matt 5:20) Murder = Hatred, Insult, Contempt; Adultery = Immoral Thoughts; Lies = Rash Vows.

10 2 And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things. (2:2) Practice: Keeping Bad Thoughts in the Mind (Non-repentant). Acting Out Based on those thoughts. A Non-repentant Heart Will Act by the Evil Thoughts. It Is Impossible to Have a Bad Heart and a PerfectLife! Hypocrisy Will Do Them in : Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 2 For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. (Matt 7:1-2)

11 3 But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God? (2:3) Jews in the Intertestamental Time Believed that They Had a Covenantal Nomism for Collective Salvation: They Are Collectively the Chosen People. They Had Covenants with God (Abrahamic & Mosaic). If They Honestly Try to Obey the Law, They Will Be Saved from the Final Judgment.

12 Covenantal : Abrahamic Covenant: Royal Grant Covenant: God Sovereignly Gave to Abraham: A Land: Israel. A Nation: with a Davidic King. A Blessing: Extended to the Nations Who Bless the Seed of Abraham. Israel, the People: Materially. Jesus, the True Israelite: Spiritually. Being Reckoned as Righteous Is by Faith in God s Promise of the Messiah: Messiah = The Seed of Abraham Who Will Bless the Nations. Then he believed in the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness. (Gen 15:6 NAU) This Is Promisory Pistism (Pistis = Faith).

13 Nomos = Law. Nomism : thru the Mosaic Law. The Mosaic Covenant Is a Suzerain-Vassal Covenant: God Will Bless Israel to Stay in the Promised Land, if They Obey the Law. If They Disobey, They Will Be taken into Exile. In God s Time, He Will Sovereignly Bring Them Back. The Mosaic Law Is for Keeping the Jews in the Land, Not Eternal Salvation. The Law Reveals God s Holiness and Human Sinfulness, and Leads to Faith in the Redeemer.

14 4 Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? (2:4) God Richly Blessed the Jews with Kindness: Goodness. Tolerance: Forbearance. Patience: Longsuffering. The Goal of God Is to Lead the People of God to Repentance and away from Sin. Not by the Fear of Condemnation. But by the Reaction to God s Grace.

15 The Jews in the Intertestamental Times Knew God with the Same Quality. 1 But thou, O God, art graciousand true, longsuffering, and in mercy ordering all things, 2 For if we sin, we are thine, knowing thy power: but we will not sin, knowing that we are counted thine. (Wisdom of Solomon 15:1-2 KJV Apocrypha) Rather Than Admitting Sins and Being Thankful to God s Grace, Which Will Lead to Repentance, Jews Went the Way of Self Righteousness.

16 5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God (2:5) Self Righteous People Do Not See the Need for Repentance. They Are Deceived to Believe That the Evil in the Corrupted Soul Will Not Manifest into Visible Sins, and God Will Not See Any.

17 The Self Righteous People Who Are Perfect on the Outside Are Actually Non-repentant Sinners. They Accumulate the Wrath of God as the Evil Idolaters and Perverts Do. They May Have a (Relatively Speaking) Good Life Now, but It Will Be Revealed in the Day of Judgment: at The Second Coming of Christ, and The Great White Throne Judgment.

18 Jews and Gentile Have Level Playing Field before the Judgment of God. Internal Sins Will Be Judged as External Ones. No One with a Bad Heart Can Have a Perfect Life. Hypocrisy Will Be Judged, May Be Worse Than Plain Wickedness. There Is No Collective Salvation. Salvation Is by Personal Faith in the Messiah. Visible Blessings Are Based on the Obedience to the Law.

19 Man Cannot Take Advantage of God s Goodness, and Not Respond with the Repentance from Sin. The Wrath of God Will Be Revealed to All Sinners at the End Time. Be Humble, Recognize God s Holiness and Our Sins, No Matter You Are a Jew or Gentile, Relatively Good or Bad. Humbly Come to the True Faith in Christ, and Humbly Pray for His Blessings.
