1 FGM Words of FIYA Lessons by Elder Demetrius B. Short Praise the Lord my friend! Thank you for taking an interest in our Words of FIYA moments of inspirations. You will find attached the lesson entitled: How to Survive in my Wilderness - #003. This comprehensive study focuses on our ability of lack of ability to cope in uncomfortable situations. Jesus told us that if we suffer with him we shall also reign with Him. Suffering is never easy, but how we cope with it is important. You have to be able to see your wilderness experience in a new light and new attitude. Running from hardships and troubles won t grow you in God. The peace of knowing God is with you is the thing we need to know IN the wilderness. Sit back and enjoy this enlightening study on the wilderness and how it can deepen your spiritual walk with Christ At the conclusion of the study we hope to be able to: Understand that the wilderness is not always a bad place. Develop the survival skills to endure the wilderness Develop a deeper and more keen ear of knowing the voice of God Develop the faith to survive and not run from wilderness experiences. 2 Exodus 14:11-13, Deuteronomy 8:1-3, Deuteronomy 9:1-6 Introduction: If we knew our biggest break through or blessing was coming in the next week for sure, we would all be excited and in preparation mode to receive it. Now, if you were informed that it would require you to go through the biggest test you ve ever encountered, many of us would re-think the value of receiving this blessing. Isn t it amazing that we reevaluate the desire of things based on what it takes to get it? What ever happened to just getting it? The problem is that we want experiences to be simple enough for the our eyes to determine our success rather than believing its not what looks bad all the time that is bad. What is bad is you not pursuing dreams and aspirations because of wilderness experiences. How many things have you given up on because the road to it was going to be tough, long, hard and require commitment and trust? This lesson will teach you how to welcome wilderness experiences you will have to face in life. Do we ask for them? NO! But one thing is certain, they will surely come and avoiding them by running isn t going to build you spiritually. By welcoming your wilderness experience, you are seeking help from God to get you through what seems to be a trial that will kill you. What God see s is an opportunity to sustain you, grow you and teach you how to endure hardness, as a good soldier. What we will find out through the wilderness is if our will, desire and love to serve God will cease as long as the wilderness experience exists. DEFINITIONS: Wilderness Wilds, rough country, backwoods, wasteland, boondocks ** Natural uncultivated land Barren or area that is left empty a mostly uninhabited area of land such as a forest or mountainous region in its natural uncultivated state, sometimes deliberately preserved like this. (There are certain areas of the city, that are deemed natural habitations that are deliberately left uncultivated) Where He leads me, I will follow: So looking at the definition of Wilderness, this shouldn t be a place that anyone voluntarily goes. When we hear words like barren, desolate, wild or uninhabited, our instinct tells us that this is a place where the chance of survival may be at a minimal. If you Google the most visited vacation spots, I m certain you won t find desserts as the top places people desire to vacation! Naturally, we are attracted to places that will give us gratification with no effort. Who wants to go on vacation and have to find water? Not me Exodus 14:1-3 shares a surprising revelation about our God and how his perspective on these type places we deem uninhabitable. Exodus 14:1 And the

3 Lord spake unto Moses saying. Here is another verse of scripture that reemphasizes the importance of a relationship with God. The first key here is knowing who is doing the talking in your life. Is God the least person you are having a conversation with about the issues of your life? Is Dr. Phil and reality shows your main source of finding the answers and God your backup plan? God spoke directly to Moses to instruct him on where He was going to lead him. It is up to Moses to follow or ignore. All too often we sit in the position of Moses and ignore because of what we see in front of us. God will never send me through this is what we say. But watch what God does to Moses as his leader. He tells him specifically where to go, and it isn t good. Exodus 14:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn and encamp before Pi-ha-hi -roth, between Mig dol and the sea, over against Ba -alze -phon: before it shall ye encamp by the sea. The Lord doesn t treat Moses as he did Abram when he told Abram to get out and go to a place I WILL show you. He tells Moses of the exact place, exact dimension and exactly location. Would you ask a Police Officer directions verses a nail tech? Would you ask a computer scientist a medical problem? God made the Heavens and the earth. Every dimension, square footage, crack, crevice and hole and He is telling us where He wants us to go and we are questioning whether to follow. When are we going to follow simply because He knows best? Obviously, Moses was running from Pharoah and Egypt. He was going the right direction away from it. But God was still saying, Moses you re going the wrong way. You re going your way out, and if I continue to let you go your way, you ll find yourself enslaved again. How many times have you done it your way only to find yourself in deeper issues and problems? Our intellect and mindset can dig us deeper into desperate circumstance until we learn to trust and depend on God! To prove this, why would God tell Moses to turn IF he was going the right way? Wouldn t it had been, Hey Moses! You re going the right way son. Just keep right up the road and you ll be fine! The Lord specifically said turn which means go opposite of where you are going. This is where Moses had to rely on his trust in God. You got us this far, so I m going to let you lead me, and not only lead me, but I WILL FOLLOW! Secondly, the Lord tells Moses to encamp. Now this is a scary part of this scripture text because not too many people want to hear this. Why? Because when we don t know where we are, the last thing we want to do is STOP (encamp). We want to get to where it is most familiar to us. Life s victories doesn t always come with knowing where you are, but its living through the eyes of faith that help us overcome unfamiliar territories the enemy boxes us in with. How many of us can honestly say, I didn t know how I got out, but the Lord got me out? This is where Moses is. Encamp means to make lodge or camp. In other words, Moses go here, stop and get comfortable. Where has God told you to go that you rejected because of fear? What calling in your life have you denied because people told you that you couldn t be this or that? Why have you

4 chosen to move past the place God has told you to stop and get comfortable with? If it s because it s your wilderness experience, then you don t know how unfortunate you are to be living the way you are living. Sometimes, the biggest blessing in right in the wilderness, and all we have to do is hold God s hand and learn how to survive in the wilderness rather than run from it. My biggest victories have come from inside my wilderness experiences. I learned that as long as God is with me, I shall fear no evil Can God lead you? That is a very powerful question. Everyone wants good leadership, but when it is provided, you have to accept it or choose to walk alone. Are you walking alone because you can t be led? It s a setup anyway: Now that you ve learned the importance of following God s instructions, the question many of you are asking is why. Its ordinary to ask questions because that is how we learn. But the intent of your question can either drive you into spiritual frustration or propel you past your problem. The Lord needed Moses cooperation. Most of the time we have delayed blessing because we are not cooperating! An uncooperative person causes any project to delay. The more time we spend going over and over one thing, other things just don t get done. You cannot afford to be uncooperative with a God that knows your future anyway! He can afford to leave you where you are, but to survive this test that your in, He is going to need your cooperation. Cooperation in what way you are asking? This way Exodus 14:3 For Pharoah will say of the children of Israel, they are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in. Now this proves God sent them deliberately into the wilderness! If you beg to differ that God will send you there, you need to read and read and re-read this again. You re not entangled in a straight place. If you feel entangled with debt, peace of mind, doubt and fear, don t run from this place! This is an opportunity for God to use you to get His victory AND YOURS because it s a SETUP! God is saying, if you can survive long enough where I place you, I ve already given you the battle. If you can survive: the lies the loneliness the agony the stress the sickness the layoff the crisis the unemployment

5 on the other hand, I m working things out for your good! The devil is rejoicing over your struggle right now, but God is celebrating your breakthrough. I want you to tell yourself IF. That is a powerful 2 letter word. Tell yourself, IF I can survive this test. IF I can overcome my past. IF I can overcome people who s purpose is to cause hell and havoc in my life. IF, IF, IF Your Spirit should be rejoicing right now over the fact that God is using you to set you back to be setup for a comeback! Every soldier PRACTICES how to be a prisoner of war! WOW you mean I should practice this? A soldier s survival is not dependent on how he/she is in victory, but how they are able to survive when they or one of their own is a prison of war! What are you willing to eat to stay alive? Where are you willing to sleep to live one more day? Its time to stop running and praying for God to never let you go through anything, but its time to praise God for giving you the strength to not only go through the wilderness, but come out with your right mind and a more radical praise than before. This is a good place to begin to thank God for setting up your enemy. He knows the devil is creeping in like Pharoah because they will be hungry to overtake you in the wilderness. He THINKS you re trapped. He thinks you re pinned. He thinks your entangled and he is moving in for the kill. The Lord removed the hedge of protection from Job, and that very thing suckered the enemy in. God is only going to let the enemy get so close. Don t run because you feel his breath on you. Don t fear because he sent you termination papers. Just stand still and see the salvation of the Lord come to past in your life. Conclusion: Next week we will deal with the blessing inside the wilderness. This lesson is an attempt for you to mentally stop thinking that the wilderness is always bad. If Moses didn t turn and encamp in an entangled place, the bait wouldn t have been set for Pharaoh. He maybe would have not pursued and waited for another opportunity to strike. But God wasn t going to wait to kill them one by one. He had a very big surprise for Moses enemy that would end this torture of God s people for good. Are you tired of little battles and little victories? Lets learn to be cultivated in the wilderness and come out stronger and more powerful in the Lord our God.
