They are sandwiched between the fast days f Shiva Asar B tamuz - The 17th f Tamuz, and Tisha B Av - the 9th f Av. Thrughut this time, specific activities are frbidden - either as a sign f murning r because they are assciated with danger and this is an minus time fr the Jewish Peple. The limitatins increase in three basic stages: The Three Weeks, The Nine Days and Tisha B Av. These are detailed belw.

Shiva Asar B Tamuz The Seventeenth f Tamuz The 17 th f Tamuz is a fast day that marks the many tragedies that ccurred n that day: The glden calf was wrshipped and as a result, the Luchs (Tablets) were brken. A few hundred years later, the walls f Yerushalayim were breached, and an idl was erected in the Beis Hamikdsh. 1 This fast day begins at dawn and cncludes 50 minutes after sunset (in Nrth America). 2 Tasteless medicine may be taken with a minimal amunt f water. Regarding medicine that has an enjyable taste, a rabbi shuld be cnsulted. 3 Pregnant, nursing, elderly r infirm peple that find it difficult t fast shuld cnsult a rabbi. 4 Even thse wh are exempt frm fasting may nt eat particularly tasty fds r treats. 5 Restrictins f The Three Weeks Althugh the fast f Shiva Asar B tamuz begins in the mrning, the restrictins f The Three Weeks rdinarily begin the evening befre. In extenuating circumstances, a rabbi shuld be cnsulted. 6 Music Playing and listening t music fr recreatin is prhibited. 7 It is permitted t play music fr yung children but this shuld nt be dne publicly. 8 Nn-recreatinal music is permitted. Therefre: - One may play music as a surce f incme such as t tutr yung children r t benefit nn-jews. 9 (Nte that this becmes frbidden during the Nine Days.) - Rhythmic music that is necessary fr exercise is permitted Passively hearing music as it is played fr children, while n hld during a phne call r shpping in a stre is permitted. 11 It is questinable whether A Cappella style music is permitted. One shuld cnsult his r her rabbi regarding its status. Dancing (withut music) is generally nt allwed but is permitted at a Sheva Brachs celebratin. 12 Haircuts and Shaving Haircuts and shaving are nt permitted during this time. 13 If nt shaving culd cause smene t lse a jb r incur a significant financial lss, it is permitted t shave at least until The Nine Days begin. 14 See The Nine Days regarding shaving during that time. A mustache that interferes with eating may be trimmed. 15 Brushing r cmbing hair is permitted. 16 Wmen are als restricted frm taking haircuts 17. Nnetheless: Tweezing is permitted 18, wmen f marriageable age may shave bdy hair 19, and married wmen wh have hair grwing by their temples may remve it fr tznius purpses. 20 Cutting and/r washing a sheitel is permitted until The Nine Days begin. 21 It is questinable if children can receive a haircut during this time. 22 It is permitted t cut hair in extenuating circumstances. 23 Fr example, if a child gave himself a haircut it wuld be permitted t even it ut s that the child lks nrmal.

If a bris ccurs during the Three Weeks, the parents, mhel and sandek (the ne wh hlds the baby during the circumcisin) are allwed t take a haircut and shave that day 24 in hnr f the mitzvah. 25 This is nt permitted during the week in which Tisha B Av ccurs. Shehechiyanu During the Three Weeks, activities that require recitatin f a Shehechiyanu are avided. Therefre, thse wh recite the Shehechiyanu when wearing new, imprtant clthing (such as an expensive suit), may nt wear such clthing at this time. The same wuld be true fr eating an enjyable, seasnal fruit r vegetable fr the first time since its seasn began. 26 These activities are permitted n Shabbs 27. (See The Nine Days regarding wearing new clthes n Shabbs during that time.) One wh wishes t buy a car, huse r significant new appliance during this time shuld cnsult a rabbi fr prper guidelines. 28 Dangerus Activities Ptentially dangerus activities are avided during the Three Weeks since it is an minus time f year. 29 The Nine Days The Nine Days begin at the start f the Jewish mnth f Av. Since the destructin f the Batei Mikdsh ccurred during this mnth, it carries an increased level f murning. The murning further intensifies during the week in which Tisha B Av falls. General Restrictins Hme imprvements such as building, painting r planting are generally nt allwed. 30 If these activities are f an urgent nature they may be perfrmed. 31 Cnstructin thrugh a cntractr that began befre the Nine Days may cntinue. If ne is in the psitin t persuade the cntractr (mnetarily r therwise) t pstpne wrk until after the Tisha B Av, it is virtuus t d s. 32 Since this time f year is beset with misfrtune, it is advisable nt t schedule elective surgeries r curt cases during this time. If pssible, these shuld be pstpned until Elul (the next mnth in the Jewish calendar). 33 Even thse wh were permitted t shave fr financial reasns during The Three Weeks shuld refrain frm ding s during The Nine Days. During the week in which Tisha B Av ccurs the prhibitin t shave is mre severe. If shaving is financially unavidable, a rabbi must be cnsulted. 34 Cutting nails is permitted until the week in which Tisha B Av ccurs. During that week, cutting nails is nly permitted fr Shabbs and any ther mitzvah need (such as preparing fr the mikvah). 35 Becming engaged is permitted but it may nt be celebrated with a meal. 36 Musical instruments are nt played, even n a prfessinal basis. 37 It is cmmendable t avid making purchases that bring ne jy. 38 Clthes, Twels and Linen - Purchasing New clthing, twels r linen may nt be purchased during this time. 39

These items may nt be purchased even if they are intended t be used after The Nine Days. 40 In cases f necessity, a rabbi shuld be cnsulted. 41 It is permitted t repair garments during this time unless the repair will be s extensive that the garment will lk like new r if the garment will need t be cleaned in rder t repair it Washing/Irning Clthing, twels r linen may nt be washed r irned 43 during the Nine Days irrespective f when they will be used. 44 These items may nt even be given during this time t a nn-jew fr immediate cleaning and laundering. 45 Small stains may be remved. 46 Children s clthing that cnstantly becme dirty may be washed 47 but nly in a discreet manner. 48 If smene has n clean clthes t wear, a rabbi shuld be cnsulted Using Neither new 50, nr freshly laundered clthes, twels r linen may be wrn r used during The Nine Days. 51 Fr these items t be permitted, they must have already been wrn r used at least ne time since they were last washed. Nte that even after wearing smething fr a shrt time 52 it is n lnger cnsidered new/freshly laundered. Therefre, it is advisable t wear a number f changes f clthing fr shrt time-perids befre the Nine Days begin s that these n lnger new/freshly laundered - but still clean - clthes will be available fr The Nine Days. Since the restrictin des nt apply n Shabbs, this preparatin may als be dne n Shabbs during the Nine Days. Be aware that this is nly permitted fr garments that culd ptentially be suitable fr Shabbs. 53 In additin, when preparing n Shabbs this intent may nt be verbalized r apparent. 54 Children wh are t yung t cmprehend the cncept f murning r wh are cnstantly dirtying themselves are nt subject t this restrictin. Fr Shabbs, freshly laundered clthes and twels are permitted but bed linen remains restricted. 55 Huseguests that arrive during the Nine Days may be given fresh linen. 56 If a bris ccurs during the Nine Days, the parents, mhel and sandek are allwed t wear freshly laundered clthes in hnr f the mitzvah. 57 Shwering, Bathing and Swimming Unnecessary shwering, bathing r swimming is frbidden during this time. 58 Shwering t remve dirt r sweat is permitted. 59 The shwering time must be limited t what is necessary and the water may nly be as ht as is needed t remve the dirt r sweat. 60 Fr mitzvah purpses (such as fr wmen s mikvah preparatin) shwering and bathing with ht water is permitted 61. Accrding t many pinins, this includes taking a shwer as usual in hnr f Shabbs. 62 Men wh use the mikvah every Friday may use it this week as well 63 as lng as the mikvah is nt ht. 64 One wh needs t swim fr therapy shuld cnsult a rabbi. 65

Children under the age f six may swim in a kiddy pl r run thrugh a sprinkler but this may nt be dne as a grup r in a public lcatin. 66 Fd Limitatins Wine, grape juice, beef, fwl and any f their derivatives may nt be cnsumed during this time. 67 In this cntext, the definitin f derivatives is if the meat flavr wuld be enugh t make a cnsumer fleishig, and if the wine s taste is discernible. 68 These fds are permissible at a meal hnring a mitzvah such as the Shabbs meals, a bris r pidyn haben 69. These fds shuld nt be fed t children. 70 If these fds are essential fr ne s health and n substitute is available, they are permitted. 71 Even in this instance, if fwl is an ptin it is preferred ver beef. 72 Siyum A siyum is a meal that celebrates a cmpletin f a significant bk f Trah. This includes a Gemara tractate, a seder f Mishna, r a bk f Tanach that was studied with the Rishnim (early cmmentaries). 73 Since this meal celebrates a mitzvah, it may include meat and wine. 74 One shuld neither rush, nr deliberately delay regular studies in rder t make a siyum specifically during this time. It is als inapprpriate t celebrate with a festive meal if ne des nt nrmally celebrate this way the rest f the year. 75 On the ther hand, there is nthing wrng with studying smething new and scheduling it in rder t make a siyum during this time. 76 Up until the week in which Tisha B Av falls, all guests that wuld nrmally be invited thrughut the year may participate. 77 During the week in which Tisha B Av falls, nly thse wh have cmpleted the texts, their immediate family and an additinal minyan f men may be included 78. Organizatins which usually have large grups eating tgether (such as a camp) may include everyne in the siyum meal during this time. 79 Havdalah During The Nine Days, the wine r grape juice used fr havdalah is preferably given t a yung child t drink 80. If n child is available, the ne wh recites Havdalah drinks the wine himself. 81 Several rules apply: The child shuld be an age that he/she is t yung t be expected t murn but ld enugh t cmprehend the cncept f making brachs. 82 This is apprximately six years ld 83. The child des nt recite his wn brachah befre drinking but relies n the Hagafen that was mentined during havdalah. Sme avid the issue f drinking wine during The Nine Days by reciting Havdalah ver cffee, tea, r beer. 84

Tisha B Av Tisha B Av cmmemrates the burning f bth the first and secnd Batei Mikdsh. In additin, many ther tragedies thrughut ur histry have ccurred n this day. 85 In rder t assist us with feelings f remrse and repentance, we are nt allwed t eat r drink n Tisha B Av. In additin, it is frbidden t: wash any area f the bdy, smear ils, creams r ltins n any area f the bdy, wear leather ftwear and have marital relatins. 86 The restrictins begin at sunset Tisha B Av eve 87, cntinue thrugh the entire fllwing day and cnclude fifty minutes after sunset (fr thse living in Nrth America). 88 Nte: As with every day in the Jewish calendar, there are pints in time that vary by lcatin. On Tisha B Av, tw imprtant times t be aware f are: shkiya (sunset) and chatzs (midday). Cnsult t see what these times are in yur area. A Pstpned Tisha B Av This year ( ), the 9th f Av falls n Shabbs and the fast is pstpned frm Mtz ei Shabbs thrugh Sunday evening. Because f this, sme unusual laws apply. - Seudah Hamafsekes On a regular year, a murner s meal called the Seudah Hamafsekes is eaten during the afternn befre the fast starts. Since this meal wuld be unbecming t the hnr f Shabbs, it is nt eaten. Instead, all Shabbs meals are eaten nrmally. 89 Be careful hwever that the third meal cncludes well befre sunset which is the time that the fast begins even thugh it is still cnsidered as Shabbs in all respects. 90 Extra cmpany shuld nt be invited fr Shalsh Seuds but it may be eaten with any usual guests Remving Leather Shes As sn as the time fr Shabbs cncludes, ne recites the wrds bruch hamavdil bein kdesh lechl /Blessed is the One wh separates between hly and mundane and remves his r her leather shes. 92 Mst shuls will begin Ma ariv later than usual s that peple can put n their Tisha B Av clthing and shes after Shabbs has cncluded. - Havdalah On Saturday night, nly the brachah ver fire is recited withut any intrductry verses and additinal brachs. 93 In sme cmmunities it is recited at shul befre Eicha is read. 94 As with every time Havdalah is recited, wmen are nt bligated t hear r recite this brachah. 95 See Tisha B Av Cnclusin fr the Havdallah at the cnclusin f the fast. Restrictins Eating and Drinking Tisha B Av is a stringent fast day - secnd nly t Ym Kippur. 96 As a general rule, even thse wh are ill, weak, nursing r pregnant are suppsed t fast but a rabbi shuld always be cnsulted. 97 Nnetheless: It is frbidden t fast if it culd put ne s life at risk. 98 Wmen wh are within thirty days after childbirth d nt have t fast n Tisha B Av; 99 within seven days f childbirth, they are nt allwed t fast. 100 Necessary pills and medicatin shuld be swallwed withut liquid. If this is nt feasible, a rabbi shuld be cnsulted. 101

Even thse wh are nt fasting may nt eat especially tasty fds r treats. This includes children under bar/bas mitzvah wh are ld enugh t understand the cncept f murning. 102 This year, since Tisha B Av falls immediately after Shabbs, all adults wh will be eating n Tisha B Av must first say Havdalah (as is described in Tisha B Av Cnclusin). 103 One shuld cnsult a rabbi regarding the type f beverage t use fr this Havdalah. 104 Children d nt listen t Havdalah befre they eat n Tisha B Av. 105 Bathing and Washing Washing any part f the bdy with water f any temperature is included in this restrictin. 106 Fllwing, are exceptins t the rule: It is permitted t clean dirt r germs but the washing must be limited t the affected area. 107 If the dirt r germs are spread ut, the general area may be washed. 108 Washing fr medical purpses is allwed. 109 In the mrning, hands are washed in the usual alternating manner but nly up t the jints where the fingers attach t the palm. 110 The usual brachah is nt recited until after ne washes frm using the bathrm. 111 After ne s hands are dried, even thugh they are smewhat mist, ne may rub his r her eyes. Any glutinus discharge may be washed away with water. 112 It is als permitted t wash ne s hands in this manner befre mincha, 113 r after leaving a cemetery. 114 If it is necessary t wash an bject (such as fd fr a child), ne des nt need t wrry abut inadvertently getting his r her hands wet. 115 Leather Ftwear Ftwear cntaining leather may nt be wrn n Tisha B Av. 116 This restrictin applies t children nce they are ld enugh t understand the cncept f murning. Cmmn practice applies it t yunger children as well. 117 Leather inserts which are necessary fr a medical cnditin may be wrn. 118 Aninting Oils, alchl, ltins, creams r perfumes may nt be rubbed nt any part the bdy. 119 Spreading these items is permitted fr a medical purpse. 120 It is permissible t use dedrant n Tisha B Av 121 (in cntrast t Ym Kippur 122 ). Marital Relatins Marital relatins are frbidden n Tisha B Av. All interactive limitatins that apply when a wman is a niddah are als in effect thrughut the evening f Tisha B Av. 123 Additinal Restrictins Since studying Trah generates jy, the nly Trah subjects that may be studied n this day are thse related t murning, tragedy r Tisha B Av. This prhibitin als applies t teaching children. 124 Until midday, ne may nt sit n a seat that is higher than twelve inches. 125

This des nt apply t thse have physical limitatins due t age r infirmity 126 r in cases f necessity such as when riding in a vehicle r using the bathrm. Activities that culd be distracting frm the murnful spirit f the day are frbidden at least until midday. Sme examples f this grup are ging t wrk, any general skilled labr, cleaning the huse and yard wrk. 127 If a significant financial lss will result frm nt wrking, a rabbi shuld be cnsulted. 128 When sleeping during Tisha B Av evening, it is prper t reduce ne s cmfrt such as remving a pillw r sleeping n the flr. 129 This behavir is nt relevant fr the aged r infirm. 130 We d nt greet thers n Tisha B Av. If smene mistakenly greets yu, reply in a subdued fashin and if sensitively pssible, infrm them f their mistake. 131 This is particularly relevant when answering the telephne since the usual greeting f hell is nt permitted. A practical suggestin is t answer a call with saying yes, r this is. Other than tzedaka, we d nt give gifts n Tisha B Av. 132 Tallis and tefilin are nt wrn until the mincha but the smaller tzitzis garment is wrn as usual. 133 It is questinable if a brachah shuld be recited when putting n the tzitzis garment in the mrning. 134 T avid any issue, it is best t leave them wrn thrughut the night f Tisha B Av (althugh this is nt bligatry). 135 Tisha B Av Cnclusin When breaking the fast n Sunday night, eating r drinking is generally nt allwed until after hearing Havdalah. This Havdalah cnsists f the brachah ver wine and the brachah f Hamavdil bein kdesh l chl. (The usual, intrductry verses and the brachs ver spices and fire are mitted.) 136 As with every Havdalah: - It is permitted t drink water befre hearing Havdalah A wman shuld ideally hear it recited by a man (r by ver bar mitzvah) wh has nt yet fulfilled his bligatin. Otherwise, she recites it herself 138 and drinks the wine r grape juice One wh dislikes wine r grape juice - especially after a fast - shuld cnsult a rabbi fr which ther beverages may be used If at least three unces f wine are cnsumed, the after-brachah al hagefen is recited. This is true even if a bread meal is abut t begin. 141 (Unless mre wine will be drunk during the meal. Then, the al hagefen is nt recited. 142 ) - Hamtzi r Mezns fd that is in frnt smene wh is reciting Havdalah must be cvered similar t what is dne when reciting Kiddush. - One wh frgt t recite the al hagefen and already started t eat a bread meal shuld have specific intentin that the Birchas Hamazn after the meal be fr the wine as well. 143 Pst Tisha B Av Since the Batei Mikdsh cntinued t burn thrugh the tenth f Av, restrictins usually cntinue thrugh the day fllwing Tisha B Av. 144 This year hwever, since Tisha B Av was pstpned, the nly restrictins that remain in effect are listening t music, and cnsuming meat, wine r grape juice 145 (with the exceptin f Havdalah 146 ). These activities becme permitted the mrning after Tisha B Av.

Tisha B Av Prayers Tip: Be Prepared! We sit n a lw seat r the flr until midday. 147 One wh desn t want t sit n the flr, shuld be sure t bring alng a cushin r lw seat. On Tisha B Av, there are a number f changes frm the usual prayers. It is highly recmmended t buy a kinns (described belw) that includes the adapted prayers fr Tisha B Av. Kinns Additinal texts called kinns are recited n Tisha B Av primarily during the daytime. 148 Tip: Kinns are nt fund in the siddur but in a specific bk called a kinns. The bks are usually available at the synaggue but if yu prefer a translated versin, yu will likely need t bring yur wn. The purpse f reciting kinns is t aruse feelings f murning which is accmplished by reading them in a meaningful way. Unfrtunately, due t their difficult, antique Hebrew style and the general stress f Tisha B Av, many synaggues read the kinns quite fast. In this case, it is prper t say them independently f the cngregatin. One wh has limited time shuld ask a knwledgeable persn which items shuld be priritized. It is perfectly fine t recite a translatin f the texts instead f the riginal Hebrew. Ma ariv Tip: Ma ariv is immediately fllwed with the reading f the Bk f Eicha (Lamentatins) and a few kinns. 149 The entire service usually lasts abut an hur. Eicha Even in synaggues that the chazzan usually wears a tallis fr ma ariv, he des nt wear ne the night f Tisha B Av. Lights in the shul are dimmed during the reading f Eicha. 150 When the reader cncludes Eicha, a specific verse (nted in mst printed editins) is read in unisn by the cngregatin. After the reading cncludes, the first few kinns are recited. 151 (The secnd ne in the list is nly recited n Saturday night.) Wmen are nt bligated t hear the reading f Eicha. 152 A man wh is praying withut a minyan als recites Eicha and kinns. 153 Under rdinary circumstances, ne wh is sitting shivah has a minyan in his hme and des nt cme t the synaggue. 154 On Tisha B Av hwever, since the entire cmmunity is in murning, murners cme t the synaggue as well. 155 In Eretz Yisrel, the chazzan custmarily reads Eicha frm a scrll and als recites a brachah befre the reading. 156 Shacharis Tip: Shacharis tgether with all the kinns usually lasts a few hurs. One wh needs t leave early, shuld bear in mind that until midday it frbidden t d activities that are distracting frm the murnful spirit f the day (see: Additinal Restrictins abve). The tallis and tefilin are nt wrn during shacharis. As mentined abve, althugh the tallis is nt wrn, the smaller tzitzis garment is. 157

The chazzan s repetitin has a few changes that are nted in the siddur. Nthing needs t be repeated if these changes were mitted. 158 Many cmmunities in Eretz Yisrel have the custm t read the bk f Eicha after Shacharis (this time withut a brachah. 159 Mincha Tip: Expect mincha t last at least twice as lng than usual. The tallis and tefilin are wrn during mincha (regardless f whether ne is praying with a minyan). 160 Shmneh Esrei is recited with tw insertins (ne in the brachah V yerushalayim and ne in Shma Kleinu.) If the insertins were mitted, Shmneh Esrei is nt repeated. 161 Cncluding Tisha B Av After ma ariv at the cnclusin f Tisha B Av, kidush levanah is recited if the mn is visible. 162 It is preferable t break the fast befre reciting kidush levana 163 but nt if it will cause ne t miss saying kidush levana with a minyan. 164 Regular shes shuld be wrn when reciting kidush levana. 165 (T ensure that ne will nt miss reciting kidush levana with a minyan, ne shuld plan ahead and bring the shes with him t maariv.) 1 Ta anis 26a 2 Iggrs Mshe Orach Chayim vlume 4 #62 3 See Halichs Shlm Chapter 13 D var Halacha 8 4 See Shulchan Aruch 550:1 5 Mishna Berura 550:5 6 See Mishna Berurah Mahaduras Dirshu (chadasha) 551:18 nte 31 7 Mishna Berura 551:16 8 Shiurey Halacha f Rabbi Shmuel Felder 9 Biur Halacha 551 Me matim; see Iggrs Mshe Orach Chayim vlume 3 #87 10 Shiurey Halacha f Rabbi Shmuel Felder 11 Shiurey Halacha f Rabbi Shmuel Felder 12 Shiurey Halacha f Rabbi Shmuel Felder 13 Rema 551:4 14 Iggrs Mshe Orach Chayim vlume 4 # Shulchan Aruch 551:13, Mishna Berura 551:80 16 Mishna Berura 551:20 17 Mishna Berura 551:79.
