4 Message Rabbi Gila Ruskin Torah Study With Rabbi Gila Ruskin THE MYSTERIOUS ORIGINS of HANUKKAH Saturday, December 8 th 10:00 am WAS IT 8 swords, or 8 cows, or 8 days of Sukkot, or 8 days the oil lasted, or 8 plastered vessels for Zeus, or 8 days of King Solomon s Temple dedication, or 8 iron rods covered with tin to hold the olive oil, or was it 8 days a week? Join us as we dig through the sources to find THE MYSTERIOUS ORIGINS of HANUKKAH. 4 P a g e
5 Co-Presidents Message Linda Needel & Wendy Drabinski Because of all the targeted violence in our country, people are asking, Are we safe in our facility? Our answer to that question is YES. Our doors are locked and we have doubled up on security officers when groups of us congregate. The local police have agreed to drive through our parking lot regularly and do some of their work in their cars in our parking lot to ensure we have a police presence. Our board is very active in attempting to sequester funding for additional security. That being said, we need everyone's help. While in our synagogue, you should always be aware of your surroundings. If you see someone you don't know, approach them and introduce yourself. If you are uncomfortable, notify someone within the facility. Make sure doors are locked, especially the kitchen door. Come in the building and exit the building through our new front door. If you are alone in the building, do not let anyone in unless you are comfortable. The board, teachers, and temple staff will receive training on the use of alarm systems. The Religious School and Early Learning Center will be conducting regular drills for the children. We will be offering workshops in active assailant and security drills for the entire congregation. Please take advantage of opportunities presented to you. Everyone is responsible for safety in the synagogue. Thanks, Wendy and Linda 5 P a g e
6 Religious Practices Message Mark Wolkow & Melissa Brown Hanukkah is upon us! December 2 nd -10 th Sunday, December 2 marks the first night of Hanukkah this year. It s way too early we agree. To help you celebrate, we have several great options. Each evening of Hanukkah our ourdoor menorah will be lit by our congregants. Come on out to the Shabbat service on Friday, December 7, and see our wonderful Pre-K through Second Grade children show off what they ve learned. In deference to the youngsters, the service will run from 6:45 to 7:30 pm. These kids will put a holiday and Shabbat smile on your face, no matter what your age! The next night will be our public Hanukkah candle lighting, along with the annual Hanukkah Family Celebration on Saturday, December 8. Everyone member, friends, relatives and neighbors are invited. See the flyer in this Newsletter for more details. On Friday, December 14, join Rabbi Gila and the choir as we sing new and old Hanukkah melodies during the service. We know Hanukkah will technically be over, but the Hanukkah spirit will certainly still be in the air. On Friday, Decmber 21, we re back to Daven & Dine. Join us at 6:00 pm for a Festival of Light themed service, and at 6:45 pm for dinner at a local restaurant. We close out the secular year on December 28, with Pat and Mark Wolkow leading the service. We hope to see you there! B Shalom 6 P a g e

12 Sisterhood Gift Shop News Pat Wolkow We are open! We officially opened on October 28. Our specific dates and hours will be posted on our door. Generally, we are open on Sundays during Religious School, and alternating Wednesdays during mid-week Hebrew and Fridays and prior to Shabbat services. Bring your completed survey for a small prize. We are looking for Sisterhood volunteers willing to be trained to assist in the gift shop. Please call Pat Wolkow if interested. Adolph Nord Religious School News Jennifer Bober & Cheryl Conley The religious school year is off to a great start! The students have done art projects in the new art room and yoga in the new multipurpose room. We are so happy to have classrooms for all of our students in the building together. Mark your calendars and plan to attend the first grade-level service of the school year. This year we ve combined the youngest grades together: the pre-k, first and second graders will be singing Hanukkah songs and leading a few prayers on Friday, December 7. Please join us in the sanctuary for this shortened service beginning at 6:45 pm. The Religious School Committee is looking for new members. If you are interested please let us know. 14 By-Laws Committee Message Jonas Vogelhut Fellow Congregants, Every few years, it becomes time to review our guiding principles and by-laws to make sure we continually meet the needs of our community and to help us better lead this congregation. We aim to look at our governance structure in a proactive manner and change with the evolving world around us. Our by-laws were last changed in May Who would have thought back then that the Cubs would win a World Series, IPhone would be with us to version X, and Toys R Us would disappear? During our November 2018 congregational meeting, I introduced five major ideas that the board will bring for an official vote during the May 2019 congregational meeting. These are all based on changes we see in the larger Reform (and Conservative) Jewish movements and society as a whole. These include Opening Temple Adas Shalom official member status to non-jewish individuals Changing voting rights from one per family (to something else) Allowing non-jewish members to be Trustees on our Board of Directors Re-establishing a separate Social Committee from the Fund Raising Committee Reallocating board positions to account for the revised Social Committee These are a starting point for discussions we need a committee of volunteers to help refine the ideas, craft the official language for dialogue, seek input from congregants not on the committee, and eventually present the ideas for a vote. We will likely meet two or three times in person, and work the remainder of the time over and shared documents. My goal is to present a final proposal to the Board in April 2019 and have it in the May 2019 newsletter. If you are interested in joining this committee, please me at boardsecretary@templeadasshalom.org. Jonas Vogelhut Board Secretary 14 P a g e
