1 FEBRUARY 18 ASH WEDNESDAY MATTHEW 6:1 6, Jesus said to his disciples: Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have recompense from your heavenly Father. When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will repay you. When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you. What do you think Jesus means about not doing righteous or good deeds for others to see? How can we keep our good deeds private from others?

Then he said to all, If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself? Jesus says take up your cross and follow me. What do you think He means? What are your crosses? What is a way you can follow Jesus daily during lent?

6 FEBRUARY 20 FRIDAY AFTER ASH WEDNESDAY MATTHEW 9:14 15 The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast? Jesus answered them, Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. What do you think fasting means? What two things can you fast from today that is not food or drink? How can fasting bring us closer to God?
