2 FROM THE RABBI S DESK Do you want your children to be charitable, maintain an observant lifestyle, feel connected to Israel, attend Shul regularly and of course to marry a Jew? Well, it turns out that how our children spend their summer may be as influential in bringing those results as how they spend the rest of the year. Last year, a comprehensive study released by the Foundation for Jewish Camp led by sociologist Steven M. Cohen confirmed what many suspected anecdotally for years Children who attend Jewish summer camps are more likely to live richly Jewish lives than those who don t. The Impact of Jewish Camp I know that it s only the middle of December, but it isn t too early to talk about and plan for the summer ahead. There is no question that attending a Jewish Day School has the greatest impact on molding and shaping the next generation of Jewish children. The lessons learned in the classroom are complemented by the informal experiences of color war, Rosh Chodesh chagigas, school Shabbatons, and extra curricular activities. But as important as the Jewish Day School experience is, many children s greatest spiritual growth spurts occur when they are on break from school, out of the classroom, free from the rigorous homework and tests, and released from the competitive atmosphere of school. At home, children, like adults, tend to be carried forward by momentum and to be creatures of habit and routine. Meaningful and lasting change requires a paradigm shift that is difficult to achieve in the comfort of home. Summer camp provides the opportunity to break free from one s environment, to expand one s comfort zone, to be open to new experiences and ultimately to discover new aspects of oneself. For example, children who struggle to find meaning in davening in school or in shul are often enthusiastic and active participants in the davening in camp. Getting most children to sing zemiros at the Shabbos table at home is like pulling teeth. Yet, many of those same children can be found pounding on the table, standing on their chair, and screaming zemiros at the top of their lungs in camp. There are many great Jewish summer camps, but I want to call your attention to a group of programs that I believe are unique and unparalleled in the opportunities they provide, not only during the summer, but also throughout the year. You see, most camps are one or two months long. NCSY Summer Programs are integrated into an infrastructure that includes follow up, programming, advisors, and special trips throughout the year. Two summers ago, my family and I had the privilege of serving as Scholar-in-Residence on the NCSY Summer Programs in Israel. We spent a month traveling with the programs, speaking to the teens and advisors and experiencing unforgettable Shabboses together. By far, the highlight of the summer was Yom NCSY, a gathering of all 2,000 participants from the combined programs for an evening of BBQ, music, dancing and fun. The atmosphere that night was simply electric. Observing the passion, excitement, commitment and pride of so many Jewish teenagers representing a diverse spectrum and cross section of the Jewish people was among the most inspirational gatherings I have ever seen. Certainly, there are many great Jewish summer camps. However, NCSY s non profit programs are special in their mission to not only provide the typical agenda of fun, sports, and friendship but to inspire and motivate our teens to grow in their Judaism, leadership and spirituality. This Shabbos, we will have the privilege of welcoming David Cutler, Director of NCSY Summer Programs. Yocheved and I are honored to host the teens of our community for an oneg at our home on Friday night at 8:30 pm to meet and greet David and some members of his team. On Saturday night at 8:00 pm, teens and their parents are invited to enjoy a Sushi melaveh malka while learning more about the full array of programs and the diverse opportunities for teens with all kinds of interests. Those registering for a program at the meeting will receive a discount. Allow me to share with you a few of their programs and what we witnessed firsthand: GIVE (Girls Israel Volunteer Experience) is a 5 week Israel program where high school girls are given the opportunity to experience handson Judaism through the art of giving. The entire program is designed around chessed programs throughout Israel. When we participated, our family helped plan a carnival for underprivileged Ethiopian children. TJJ (The Jerusalem Journey) is an incredible program for public school teens to explore all of the exciting sites that Israel has to offer and to experience Judaism in a vibrant, inspirational way. We spent Shabbos with Rabbi Broide s TJJ bus and met teens whose growth and transformation was clearly visible and palpable. JOLT (Jewish Overseas Leadership Training) provides an opportunity for teens to learn leadership skills and to solidify their Jewish identity. First, participants travel to Eastern Europe and visit sites of the worst atrocities known to man. The trip then continues in Israel for fun, adventure and inspiration. ICE Israel is a new co-ed travel program for those looking to tour, travel, and have an amazing summer in Israel filled with ruach and fun. Camp Sports is for boys looking to play sports competitively, go on exciting trips in the New York area and grow in their Judaism. Michlelet is an extraordinary program for teenage girls who want to spend their summer learning Torah and touring Israel. We had the privilege of teaching on Michlelet and were amazingly impressed by the motivation and inquisitiveness of the remarkable young women on the program. Kollel provides an unforgettable summer in Israel with intense learning, competitive sports, and a full schedule of great trips. The Kollel features an unbeatable combination of outstanding Torah leaders, fantastic Rabbeim, and talented madrichim. That summer, I learned at the Kollel daily and was so moved by the focus of the young men who dedicated their summer to Torah study. I know that camps are not inexpensive and given the burden of tuition it is easy to see camp as a luxury. However, given the study that was released last year combined with the results many of us have seen with our own eyes, I encourage you to try to find a way to provide your teen with a summer camp experience, whether through NCSY or somewhere else. NCSY Summer Programs offers scholarship opportunities. Please come on Saturday night and learn about their programs. Consider giving your child a summer experience that could change his or her life. 3 HALACHIC QUESTION OF THE WEEK Q: When I recite the Amidah, when do I take my three steps? A: The introductory expressions to the Amidah, Hashem Sefasai Tiftach, and Ki sheim Hashem are considered part of the Amidah itself. Therefore, one should complete the three steps back and three steps forward before saying any part of the Amidah including these introductory expressions. For Shacharis, the proper custom is to take the three steps back when saying Tehillos l Kayl Elyon. For Mincha and Ma ariv, they can be taken at any time. Please submit your question of the week on any topic to Rabbi Efrem Goldberg at reg@brsonline.org PARSHA QUESTIONS QUESTIONS - MIKETZ 1. What did the fat cows being eaten symbolize? 2. How did Pharaoh s recollection of his dream differ from Nevuchadnetzar s recollection of his dream? 3. What was significant about the fact that Pharaoh dreamed repeatedly? 4. What happened to the Egyptians grain that was stored in anticipation of the famine? 5. What did Yosef require the Egyptians to do before he would sell them grain? 6. When did Yosef know that his dreams were being fulfilled? 7. Why did the brothers enter the city through different gates? 8. Why did Yosef specifically choose Shimon to put in prison? 9. How did Reuven try to persuade Yaakov to send Binyamin to Egypt? 10. How much more money did the brothers bring on their second journey than they brought on the first journey? Why? ANSWERS - MIKETZ 1. 41:4 - That all the joy of the plentiful years would be forgotten. (Not that the good years would provide food for the bad years.) 2. 41:8 - Pharaoh remembered the contents of his dream but didn t know its meaning. Nevuchadnetzar forgot even the contents of his dream :32 - It showed that the seven good years would start immediately :55 - It rotted :55 - Become circumcised :9 - When his brothers bowed to him :13 - To search for Yosef throughout the city :24 - Because he was the one who cast Yosef into the pit and the one who said, Here comes the dreamer. Alternatively, to separate him from Levi, as together they posed a danger to him :37 - He said, Kill my two sons if I fail to bring back Binyamin :12 - Three times as much, in order to repay the money they found in their sacks and to buy more even if the price had doubled. Questions and Answers are courtesy of Ohr Somayach. PARSHA SUMMARY MIKETZ Yosef Interprets Pharaoh s Dreams. Pharaoh had two unusual dreams (In one, seven lean cows devoured seven well-fed cows, yet remained lean; in the other, seven thin ears of grain swallowed seven full ears, yet remained thin). Pharaoh summoned Yosef to explain the dreams. Yosef Is Appointed Viceroy. After accepting Yosef s interpretations, Pharaoh appointed Yosef as the royal viceroy. Pharaoh gave Osnas bat Potipherah to Yosef as a wife, who bore him two sons, Menasheh and Ephrayim. Yosef s Brothers Come To Egypt To Buy Food. Due to the famine, Yaakov sent all of his sons (except Binyamin) to Egypt to buy food. Yosef ordered them to bring back Binyomin in order to prove their story. The Other Brothers Return to Yaakov. Before they departed, Yosef secretly instructed his servants to fill their vessels with grain, but return their money. On route, the brothers discovered the money and feared that they would be accused of stealing the grain. The Brothers Return To Egypt With Binyamin. When the brothers arrived in Egypt, they were escorted to Yosef s house. Yosef again ordered his servants to fill their bags, but to return their money, and place his silver goblet in Binyamin s sack. The brothers set out for home but were soon confronted by Yosef s steward, who accused them of stealing Yosef s goblet. Yehudah offered himself and his brothers as bond in lieu of Binyamin, but Yosef refused and detained Binyamin. PLEASE SUPPORT THE BRJE FOUNDERS CAMPAIGN Chanukah is always a very special time of the year and it s a great opportunity to spread the incredible light of Judaism throughout our community. For most of us having a celebration for a Bar Mitzvah is not out of the ordinary when a young man turns thirteen, but when the Bar Mitzvah boy is 84 years old it is quite remarkable. This week was the first time Mr. Eugene Topper was called to the Torah for an aliya and it was the first time someone took the time to teach him how to put on a Tallis and Teffillin. He spent the past few months preparing for this day and it was such an unbelievable experience for me to share with him. I want to thank Stuart Silverman for taking the time to participate at a special minyan on Monday as 30 people joined to celebrate this milestone with Eugene. Another fabulous BRJE event this week was a Chanukah party that the BRJE s new Jewish Academy had. The party was organized by students from the Weinbaum Yeshiva High School. There was music, dancing, projects and lots of smiles! Lastly, last Friday night 125 people participated in Friday Night Live followed by a ruach filled pre-chanukah Shabbat dinner with Rabbi, Dr. Laibel Wolf. The Jewish Academy Chanukah Party with WYHS The Founders list is continuing to grow, but we still need your help. Please consider adding your name to the list (page 8 )before December 31st and thank you in advance for your support of the outreach initiative in our community. 8 Boca Raton Jewish Experience The BRJE has been in business now for almost two years and during that time, we haven t run ANY fundraisers. In order to maximize my time in the field and make sure that every dollar goes to great use, I want to spend as little time as possible fundraising and as much time as possible doing what I do best, inspiring Jews in our community. We are now reaching out to everyone to help support this unique and inspirational local program. Sign up fast: rup@brsonline.org Celebrating Our Teens by Rabbi Uri Pilichowski This Week We Celebrate our 6 th Grade Girls and 9 th Grade Boys Seudah Shlishit is an emotional time for all Jews. During Shabbat, we get a reprieve from the daily grind and we are able to replenish our energy so that we can spend the day pursuing a greater, more refined relationship with our creator. We pray for a longer amount of time, we add in Tefilot, we find time to study, and we catch up with family and our community. As we begin Seudah Shlishit, we recognize that this fantastical time is quickly coming to an end. As Shabbat ebbs away, we nostalgically look back and try to capture every last moment of Shabbat that we can. For those in touch with their emotions, this time pregnant with feeling. Two groups of our teens take advantage of this time to study, sing, and gain inspiration. Our sixth grade girls are having their second monthly Seudah Shlishit. Their first Seudah Shlishit had an incredible 28 girls and was simply amazing. Meanwhile the ninth grade boys Seudah Shlishit is remarkable. After learning mishnayot together under the leadership of David Feldan, the boys are continuing to inspire themselves with great study and song as Shabbat wanes. This week, I hope you ll join in me in celebrating our teens and their special Seudah Shlishits. Page 10
