Submission Identifier Code:154 Full Title For Entry: Torch Award Submission Best Overall Activities Entry Category: Best Overall Activities Contact Person to be listed on Torch Award CD: Address to be listed on Torch Award CD: Darryl Temkin Club Number 614; Club Name: North Suburban Synagogue Beth El Men's Club Number of Club Members: 170 Synagogue name, city and state: North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, Highland Park, Illinois Club President Name at Time of Entry: Darryl Temkin Club President Name at Time Convention: Darryl Temkin Person Preparing Entry: Darryl Temkin Address of Person Preparing Entry: Date of Entry of Submission: Part III SELF ASSESSMENT OF ENTRY 1. Assess program procedural completeness and achievement of program goals See discussion under Overall Activities Summary." 2. Explain presentation and documentation completeness Submission includes summary of Overall Activities, Program objectives, identification of each category of programming and photographs from the events discussed. 3. Achievements of program goals, publicity, marketing and advanced planning Men's club programming is publicized in synagogue monthly bulletin, e- mail distribution of synagogue and men's club activities and weekly Shabbat bulletin. Large size posters are prepared and displayed throughout the synagogue for distinguished speakers 4. Does the program enhance the image of the FJMC, region and/or your club 1
Men's club activities are open to all members of the synagogue and professional staff and regularly attended by synagogue leaders 5. Did you include information so other clubs can use this program The extensive variety of programming detailed in this submission make duplication of individual programs or program series easy for other clubs. 6. What is its value in club building-number of named club members participating vs. club size and shul size As detailed in the attached submission, the overall programming is designed to attract members of all ages and interests. As emphasized in the submission, enhancing club membership and attracting younger members with young families has been a significant accomplishment 7. What is the effect on club administration grooming of new officers for club, shul, or region The men's club has traditionally developed leadership for the synagogue and for the Midwest Region, FJMC. As discussed more fully in the attached presentation, programming to attract younger families is being developed and run by younger men's club board members who we anticipate will continue to play a leadership role in the club. 8. Identification of source of program or practice and description of unique aspects. Most programs were not invented out of the blue, but evolved. Help us understand where it came from Many of the new program ideas come from newer younger members who understand the type of programming and events that interest them and their peers. Ideas for speakers for the Bagels program and other events come from rank and file men's club members. 9. Identification of this program as an adaptation of a previous Torch Award entry or other program. Awards will be given for implementations that are particularly effective. The original sources of the programs will be most pleased to know that their efforts have borne fruit As discussed in the attached submission, the Bagels program has been in existence for several years. However, each year the types of speakers and topics change to meet the needs of the club. Yom HaShoah programs, speakers on Israel topics and sports teams continue to be in demand and are significant components in the clubs overall activities and events. We attempt to balance the programming to meet the variety of interests in the synagogue. 10. Identification of the part of the programming effort attributable to the men s club if a joint effort with another group Joint programs with the Sisterhood continue to interest older members and their wives. Attendance at the Dinner with the Rabbi by men's club and sisterhood is always high. Joint programming with the continuing 2
education committee of the synagogue to bring in speakers of high regard and with the Israel committee and social action committee to have speakers and programs that meet our joint goals continues to enhance the reputation of the men's club and its contribution to the synagogue and the Jewish community. Torch Award Submission North Suburban Synagogue Beth El Overall Activities Summary Men s Club activities at North Suburban Synagogue Beth El are designed to touch almost every aspect of Jewish life for our members. The diversity of our content and the sheer number of programs more than 60 over the last two years - have meaningfully impacted the lives of our members, our congregants, our community and our FJMC region. Since 2005 we have run programs on Israel, the Holocaust including our Scholarship Program for Students to go to Europe and see the Camps, Kristalnacht Commemoration featuring world renowned lecturer and eye-witness Ernie Michel (the only survivor to cover the Nuremberg Trials as a reporter!), Jewish Studies, Foreign Affairs, Politics, Sports Nights, Men s Health, US Intelligence Gathering, Civil Rights, Scotch and Israeli Wine Tasting, Dinner with the Rabbi, Programs with Sisterhood, Father and Child Bowling, Annual Blood Drive, Golf League, Basketball Team, Softball Team, Men s Club Shabbat, FJMC Man of the Year, Yom HaShoah Candle Packing, Annual Music Festival, Senior Citizen Outreach with the Robineau Home through the Council for Jewish Elderly, Father Child Tzedukah program which will also benefit the Robineau Home, Scholar in Residence, Chanukah Latke Cooking for Sunday School students, Young Leadership/Young Membership Initiative, Family Oneg Shabbat, Maot Chitim, World Wide Wrap, FJMC Convention, Annual FJMC Retreats, FJMC Leadership and more. Young Leadership/Young Membership Initiative Summary NSS Beth El Men s Club was facing a crisis. Our leadership and membership was aging. We needed to attract next-generation leadership, and introduce new programming that would gain membership and participation of young members. At the same time, we wanted to make sure we maintained the same level of commitment to the programs that have served our membership and community over the years. In essence, we wanted it all! We embarked on a systematic initiative of focus groups, discussions, and consensus building. The result is new, young, dynamic leaders who have introduced new, vibrant programming like Scotch and Israeli Wine Tasting, Family Oneg Shabbat, Father/Child Tzedukah program, Father and Child Bowling, and more. This initiative has set up our Men s Club for continued success in the years ahead. 3
Holocaust Programs (supported by Candle packing funds) Nothing galvanizes Jewish commitment for Israel and our People more than the Holocaust. At NSS Beth El Men s Club, Holocaust study and remembrance is a core focus and frequent program topic. We are proud to have sponsored a number of activities including our two annual headliner s Yom HaShoah Candle-Packing with our Youth Groups and, and our two-part Holocaust Scholarship Program titled From Darkness to Light where, 1). We offer financial aid to students seeking to go to Eastern Europe to visit Concentration Camps and places of Jewish life prior to the Shoah, and, 2).These students offer their insights and recollections when they speak to the congregation about their trips in a special and moving Sunday Bagels for Your Brain program. In 2006, we had a very special evening program. Mr. Ernie Michel spoke to our entire congregation on the anniversary of Kristalnacht. This coincided with the 60 th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials. Mr. Michel is a Survivor, Former Executive VP of the Federation, author, lecturer and the only Jew to cover the Nuremberg Trials as a reporter. Over 200 congregants attended this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear an eye witness report on some of the most important incidents in Jewish history. (See Attached-- Synagogue Bulletin notice publicizing upcoming program on Kristalnacht) 4

This document is being submitted by the Men s Club of North Suburban Synagogue Beth El for the Torch Award in the category of Best Overall Activities. We have striven to bring programs that reflect the interests of our Men s Club and Congregation. Our activities cover: Bagels for your Brain Lecture Series Holocaust Remembrance Young Members Initiative Israel and the Middle East Conflict Senior Citizen Outreach - Partnering with the Council for Jewish Elderly Synagogue Involvement Politics Sports Music, Culture and the Arts Sisterhood Programs Federation Involvement Community Involvement Personal Involvement Health Miscellaneous Bagels For Your Brains Lecture Series (Forty one Programs) long the cornerstone of NSS Beth El Men s Club programming, Bagels happens most Sunday mornings. Once Minyan concludes, we gather in the Zell Activity Room at 9:30am. The Ruach makes it special, and is enhanced by a delicious bagels and lox breakfast. This is followed by Beirkat and our Speaker/Lecture with discussion and Q&A from 10-11am. These lectures cover all the topics listed above. As we detail our programs and events in this submittal, Bagels programs will be identified by an asterisk (*). Holocaust Remembrance (Seven Programs) Remembrance programs are central to NSS Beth El Men s Club Programming. The last two years have brought some of the most meaningful and heartfelt programs we ve ever done. Annual Yom HaShoah Candle Program (4/4/06 and 3/20/07) - Done in conjunction with our Rabbi and Youth organizations, we pack and ship candles to the entire congregation and registered college students. The money raised from this program funds our Scholarship Program to visit the camps.( See attached-- Synagogue Bulletin notice of candle packing and scholarships to visit Concentration Camps)(See also-- Attached letter from Rabbi in support of candle program and Attached contribution envelope) Annual Student Scholarship Program to visit the Concentration Camps and report back to the Congregation* (4/23/06, in progress in 07) - From the money we raise through the Yom HaShoah Candle Program, we offer scholarships of $250 each for students to visit Eastern Europe and the camps. 6
Each recipient is asked to speak about their experiences at our Annual Holocaust Remembrance Program. In 2007, 13 students will participate! We look forward to their report in April. It ensures that the knowledge of the Shoah will be passed down through the generations. ( See attached-- Synagogue Bulletin notice of candle packing and scholarships to visit Concentration Camps and Attached article in the Highland Park News reporting the Men s Club Program and Student Presentations) (See attached picture of students speaking on trip to Concentration Camps) Our Survivors Speak* (4/10/05) Our Holocaust program in 2005 was one of the most impactful programs we ve ever had. Five NSS Beth El members - survivors all - shared their experiences with the congregation. One, Irwin Wygodny, had never spoken about his experiences in public before this event. Northwestern Controversy One Student against a Holocaust Denier* (12/10/06) Stuart Loren is a student who stood up to the University. He made them confront the Holocaust denying Engineering Professor and limit his ability to spread his lies through the university web sites. Stuart told us of his experience in standing up for fellow Jews, Holocaust victims and Israel. Kristallnacht and the Nuremberg Trials: Personal Reflections of an Eye Witness Featuring Mr. Ernest Michel (11/9/05) Mr. Michel, (Executive Vice President Emeritus of UJA-Federation) is the only Jew and survivor to cover the Nuremberg Trials as a reporter for the German News Agency under the byline "Auschwitz Survivor #104955". Mr. Michel s remarkable story, told on the 60 th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials drew hundreds of people to NSS Beth EL. It was an incredible evening. Young Members Initiative (Eight Programs) Getting new, young leadership and members is a challenge all Men s Club s face. Over the last fifteen months, we have added many brand new programs designed to attract young new members and train new leadership for our club. It has been a wonderful success. All the events listed below were run by new, young leaders and officers of our Men s Club. We know that we are in good hands as we look to the future of NSS Beth El s Men s Club. Programs added at suggestion of new leaders switched from Sundays to evenings three executives are young did not sacrifice any of the programs that have been recognized for previous torch awards and are meaningful to our congregation and long time members. Annual Scotch and Israeli Wine Tasting (12/14/05 and 11/16/06) The first time we held this event over 40 men attended and it became an annual affair. This year over 50 men attended and we have gotten many new members to sign up as a result.(see Attached Synagogue Bulletin announcing Men s Club Wine Tasting Event) Father and Child Bowling (2/26/06) Last February, our Club hosted a funfilled Sunday afternoon of bowling and kosher pizza. 14 Dads brought their kids out for the event and we added four new members to the club! (See Attached Synagogue Bulletin notice of Bowling and Golf events) Sports Extravaganza with Bull s Legend Bob Love and Bulls Mascot Benny the Bull (4/23/06) The event started with Bulls mascot Benny the Bull 7
running down the halls of our Sunday school and stirring up the excitement. Dads and kids enjoyed a wonderful video on the Championship history of the Bulls. Bob Love gave a motivational speech geared to motivate our children to achieve and not succumb to drugs, alcohol and other temptations. Hot dogs, soft drinks and Bulls memorabilia completed a wonderful afternoon. As an aside, upon completion of the Annual FJMC Regional Retreat, six of our members rushed back to the Synagogue to attend the Sports Extravaganza!(See Attached Synagogue Bulletin notice of Father Child Sports Extravaganza) First Annual Paid Up Membership Dinner (11/29/06) This event was only open to members who had already paid their annual dues. As an incentive, the dinner was free to new members. The evening featured a great dinner, loads of Ruach and a hilarious and memory filled presentation on Jewish Sports Heroes by Chicago Sports personality Mike Lederman. Attendance was great and we will do this event annually as a result. (See Attached Flyer announcing Paid Up Members Dinner and Synagogue Bulletin notice of Paid Up Members Dinner) Family Oneg Shabbat (12/10/06 and 3/18/07) Following select Shabbatot, the Men s Club hosts a deli lunch for members of the congregation and their families who have made a reservation. Costing a nominal price for the entire family regardless of size - It attracts young families and encourages them to remain after services and utilize the Shul as a social venue. It has been a resounding success. Father and Child Tzedukah Project to benefit the Robineau Senior Home (3/11/07) In conjunction with our young Assistant Rabbi and our new, young Programming VP over 20 children signed up to make and decorate their own Tzedukah boxes. After hearing the meaning and importance of Tzedukah, the children will spend the next few months raising money for the Men s Club s favorite cause The Robineau Home for Seniors (through the Council for Jewish Elderly). The money raised will be donated to the Home and designated for a special project of Robineau s choice. It is such a worthwhile endeavor and accomplishes so much for the children (learning the meaning of charity and helping and visiting the elderly), the club (the program is conceived and run by new, young leadership while enhancing an established program Robineau), Robineau and the community. This one is special.(see Attached Picture of Father and Child Tzedukah Project) Israel and the Middle East Conflict (seven programs) Support for Israel has never been more critical than right now. Year in and year out we seek speakers whose insight and knowledge of the Middle East will strengthen our resolve to stand with Israel. Over the last two years our speakers have ranged from our annual lecture from the formidable Richard Baehr, to ex-cia Intelligence Officer for Iraq Charles Spungen, to Stuart Loren the Northwestern Student who stood up to the University and forced them to take an anti-semitic professor off their internet sites. Richard Baehr* this extraordinary lecturer joined us on 11/13/05 to discuss Israel after the Gaza Withdrawal, and again on 2/25/07 to talk about Israel in the last years of the Bush Administration. (See Attached-Picture of Speaker Richard Baehr making presentation) 8
Charles Spungen (12/4/05) the ex CIA analyst for Iraq and the Middle East joined us to share his unique perspective on Israel, the war in Iraq and the wider Middle East conflict. The Technion: Securing Israel s Future (1/22/06) Dr. Stephen Lasar, President of the American Technion Society, and Cynde Hirschtick Munzer, Senior VP of the Chicago ATS Chapter, spoke to us about the Technion the MIT of Israel and the center of Israel s scientific excellence. Jewish National Fund (2/19/06) Ben Shamir, Regional Director, updated us on the important work of the JNF, including water reservoirs, security roads new communities in the Negev and more. Volunteers for Israel (11/12/06) Mort Freedman joined us for an interesting discussion on how we can turn our trips to Israel into a volunteer experience. Opportunities exist with the military, medical organizations and social services. The Negev New Pioneers and Zionism Rediscovered (2/4/07) Rick Krosnik, Midwest Zone Director for the JNF, told us the developments in the Negev, where settlements in the desert are sprouting up and thriving. However, they face hardships and need out help. They are pioneers and true Zionists. Senior Citizen Outreach Partnering with the Council for Jewish Elderly (six programs) continuing our association with the Robineau Home in Skokie, we visited our friends at the home a number of times and escorted them to Beth El for Bagel s programs and our Music Festival. Last summer some of us made a special trip and planted vegetables in their garden! We consider our association with the seniors at Robineau one of the most rewarding programs we run. Here is a list of our activities: Shmooze (10/20/05) we visited them at Robineau, brought cookies and schmoozed with the residents. This is our annual way to meet new residents and re-acquaint the residents with us and the program. Richard Baehr* (11/13/05) we picked up the residents at the Home and drove them to Beth El for the Bagel s program. Music Festival (5/24) we picked up the residents at the Home and drove them to Beth El for our annual Music Festival. A Garden Grows in Robineau (6/13/06) Four of our members, planted vegetable in the garden at Robineau. All equipment and supplies were provided by the Council for Jewish Elderly. It was a most rewarding day and was written up in the Highland Park News. 10/18/06 Shmooze see above. Robbins Scholar (10/29/06) Dr. Lee Levine Prof History and Arch of Jerusalem we picked up the residents who joined us for the Robbins Scholar lecture at Beth El. (See Attached Picture of Robineau residents visit to Men s Club Program) Synagogue Involvement (Nine Programs) Serving our Shul is our duty and our pleasure, and the Men s Club is fully integrated into NSS Beth El. Examples include Board membership for our Club President, and leadership positions on the Synagogue Board and Committees for many other Club members. Every year we have our Men s Club Shabbat. Club members lead the service and the davening; handle the 9
Aliyot, read from the Torah, deliver the sermon everything from opening prayers to the Kiddush. Nothing gives us more pleasure than our children, and the Men s Club delights in cooking and serving Latkes and juice to our Sunday school kids every Chanukah at our annual Chanukah Party! (See Attached Pictures of Children Eating Latkes and Men s Club members serving Latkes) Our involvement with our students goes much deeper. We are proud to provide gifts to our B Nai Mitzvot and gifts and diplomas to our High School Graduates. Finally, we help with the continuing education of our adult community by sponsoring one day of our annual Robbins Scholar-in-Residence Weekend. On 10/30/05 we were honored to host Dr. Arnold Eisen, Professor of Jewish Culture and Religion at Stanford University. Dr. Eisen spoke about Renewing our relationship with Israel. This past year, on 10/29/06, Dr. Lee Levine, Professor of History and Archeology at the University of Jerusalem spoke. It was fascinating to hear about recent significant discoveries. Politics (Eight Programs) NSS Beth El has a long history sponsoring programs about politics and our government. The last two years have been no exception. Our programs included: 10/2/05 State Senator Susan Garrett* 10/9/05 Edward C. Yohnka, American Civil Liberties Union* 10/16/05 Lake County Board Members Anne Flanigan and Carol Spielman* 1/15/06 David Askew, Assistant Illinois Attorney General* 2/5/06 Michael Belsky, Mayor of Highland Park* 2/26/06 Mari Barnes, Moraine Township Supervisor* 9/10/06 Congressional Candidate Dan Seals* (See Attached Picture of Congressional Candidate Dan Seals with Men s Club Presidient, Vice-President and Synagogue President) 10/22/06 Meet and Greet Lake County Candidates* Sports (Twelve Programs) Men talk and play sports all year long, and NSS Beth El s Men s Club offers year round sports activities. The most popular is our Twilight Golf League which plays most Wednesday nights from May through mid-september. Over 50 members sign up and it is always sold out with a waiting list to join! The camaraderie continues with casual get-togethers for the boys when the evening s golf is concluded. The season concludes with a memorable end-of-season dinner that is enjoyed by all. Not to be outdone, our Softball Team brings new members each summer and loads of fun for all who attend. In addition to the previously mentioned events (Father and Child Bowling, Sports Spectacular with Bob Love, Paid up Membership Dinner with Mike Lederman), we had a number of excellent guest speakers at our Bagel s programs. They included Dr. Gil Bogen* (9/11/05) who talked about his book on former Chicago Cub catcher Johnny Kling. Kling, a Jewish ball player, toiled for the Cubs at the turn of the century; Ed Sherman*, sports reporter for the Chicago Tribune, joined us on 11/6/05 and discussed his impressions of our professional and college teams; Rob Saunders* (3/12/06) is the head professional at Sunset Golf Course and got the duffers ready for the start of the season; Sandy Krum* (1/28/07) spent twenty years as a trainer in 10
professional sports, many as trainer with our beloved Chicago Cubs. His stories and insights made a great program; finally, on 3/11/07, Burt and Bonita Boxerman* discussed their latest book Jews and Baseball Volume 1 Entering the American Mainstream It was incredible hearing about some well known and little known Jewish Athletes. (See Attached Synagogue Bulletin notice of Bowling and Golf programs and Attached Picture of Speaker Sandy Krum) Music, Culture and the Arts (Three Programs) The Men s Club of NSS Beth El has always proudly sponsored our Annual Music Festival. Over the last few years we have responded to the needs of our Shul by turning over all the proceeds of this event to our Chazzan to help fund music activities throughout the year. On 6/2/05, our wonderful Chazzan Larry Goller, led numerous choirs, chorales and guest Cantors in a fabulous evening entitled All you need is Love. The following year, on 5/24/06, Chazzan Goller put on a memorable concert called Mishbuchah. Both events were well attended by over 200 happy music lovers! On 4/30/06, former Club President and FJMC Man of the Year Phil Feitelberg led a Bagel s program for the photography enthusiasts in our club. Entitled The photograph Reconstructed the Manipulation and Combining of Images, Phil explained how to create great effects in easy, understandable terms. (See Attached-Flyer AnnouncingMusic Festival) Sisterhood Programs (Three Programs) Every Spring, we are thrilled to co-host Dinner with the Rabbi with our fabulous Sisterhood. It is a great evening of fun, food and a very different visit with our beloved Rabbi Vernon Kurtz. Each year Rabbi Kurtz chooses a topic that is sure to invite much lively discussion with the audience. It is very informal and is always one of the highlights of the year at Beth El. In January of 2006, we joined with the Sisterhood to bring an evening of show tunes and comedy with the lively group the Showtimers. A delicious deli dinner was provided and a great time was had by all! (See Attached Synagogue Bulletin notice of Men s Club Sisterhood Dinner with the Rabbi program and Attached bulletin announcing Men s Club Sisterhood Deli Dinner) Federation Involvement (Eight Programs) - Our involvement with the Region of FJMC is deep and strong. No less than four of our members are serving in Executive or Board positions with the Region. We participate with at least six members at Regional Retreats in 06 and 07, attend Convention, participate in the World Wide Wrap, and proudly present Man of the Year at the annual dinner. To bring A little of the Federation directly to our Club, we were honored to have Mid-West Regional President Sandy Victor lead a Bagel s for Your Brains program on November 19, 2006*. It was a Hearing Men s Voices program entitled Our Father s, Ourselves. Community Involvement (Nine Programs) - NSS Beth El s Men s Club believes in going outside the friendly confines of the Shul to help in the Community. We support and publicize Maot Chitim twice each year, and have many members participate in food delivery and sit on the Board of Directors. We hold an annual Blood Drive (3/11/07 and 3/19/06) with our friends at Life Source. Our Rabbi Kurtz is always the first in line to donate! Other programs of Community Involvement include: 11
9/18/05 LT.
