2 INFORMATION FROM THE PRESIDENT Rabbi Steven Henkin EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Motti Locker PRESIDENT Victor Shernoff VICE PRESIDENT Kenneth Sadler VICE PRESIDENT Matthew Allan VICE PRESIDENT Adam Fins FINANCIAL SECRETARY Liz Arkin RECORDING SECRETARY Ed Bernard TREASURER Michael Bonder IMMEDIATE PAST PRESIDENT Steven Roth BOARD MEMBERS Robyn Carroll Kenneth Hoffman Fran Kaminsky Sidney Karp Marcy Konter Stavie Kreh Nancy Isaacson Jerome Lederman Jeffrey Mayo Rick Meier Barry Schlafstein Linda Zoller HONORARY MEMBER David Hirsh MEN S CLUB PRESIDENT David Hirsh CHEVRA KADISHA David Reeves ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN Joel Goodman RITUAL COMMITTEE Steve Arkin Hello Fellow Congregants. Our Rabbi s installation on February 16 was a wonderful event and the dinner for 120 people was outstanding. All educational and religious activities, well maintained and attended, are continuing through March. While these activities are rather mundane, they are the only things that are routinely happening at AA. As I write this column, 24 of us are preparing to make a 10 day trip to Israel under the tutelage of our executive director Motti Locker. This is certainly not ordinary in nature. In addition, at this writing, our plans for the remodeling of the Karp Chapel have begun extensively and a bid has been sent to a contractor. I anticipate approval of the project at the March 27th board meeting and work to begin immediately after that. (Please don t fret, it appears at least 6 of the pews are being kept for usage). We have our May 6th Larry Lasky annual golf outing at Oak Ridge at the Landings to be followed June 3rd by our gala. These are very exciting times at our synagogue. Please join in. Gotta go, Elise is telling me to start packing. For those 23 others going to Israel, see you in Jerusalem in March. For everyone, have a wonderful Peseach. Be well, Victor Shernoff Your President SHALOM SCHOOL Eva Locker MARCH 2018 ADAR-NISAN 5778 Page 2
3 FROM THE DESK OF THE RABBI Last month, I was fortunate enough to be formally installed as the rabbi of Congregation Agudath Achim. In addition to thanking my father, who came to visit from out of town, my family, Rabbi Victor Mirleman my childhood rabbi who acted as installing rabbi I also want to take a moment to publicly thank Lynn Reeves and Motti Locker for coordinating the event, Victor Shernoff for his continued support as president, everyone who helped cook, bake, and decorate for the evening, and, of course, all who came and made it a special evening. As I spoke about that evening, my primary goal as rabbi is to help make us the best Jewish community we can be. Part of doing that is being honest about who we are. It involves looking at where we can grow and putting in the work to develop those areas. But there is also a level of humility involved in recognizing that as we do make progress, there will also be more work to do. When that work is done, there will be yet more. Just as we are ever learning and growing in our personal lives and I include myself in that statement, as well our community is also always evolving. At the same time, we can also learn from the sedars to celebrate Passover which we will be holding at the end of this month, when we retell the story of the Exodus from Egypt. We recognize that by retelling and reenacting the story, we are connecting ourselves to the long historical line of our ancestors. We remember that the story has ancient roots which still have something to teach us in modern times. If we are not rooted in that tradition and don t believe it still maintains relevance, then we find ourselves floating aimlessly, not sure what to do or why. The same is true for our community. If we change for the sake of change, then we re abandoning our history and tradition. We will lose sight of what makes us unique and separates us from any other Jewish community. Rather, the changes need to mark an evolution of our tradition, something that helps us as a community better find the relevance of Judaism in our lives. If we grow without consideration of the past, we ll quickly lose our way, but if we evaluate who we are, see where we can grow, and make changes in order to better connect each other to Judaism, then we will be on the path to becoming the kind of community we all envision. This is a long process, one in which all of us at the synagogue are engaged. We all want to see the AA be a home and center for leading a meaningful Jewish life. As your newly installed rabbi, it is my pleasure and honor to partner with each of you in that process of continuously trying to make the AA the best synagogue it can be and, as I did last month, commit myself to this effort to make AA the best it can be. Rabbi Steven Henkin MARCH 2018 ADAR-NISAN 5778 Page 3

6 SISTERHOOD Here are 4 simple steps to do this: How do I Send a Mitzvah-Gram? 1 Print out the Mitzvah-Gram page from the MARCH HaYom newsletter with the list of people celebrating a birthday or anniversary in April. 2 Circle the names of all those people to whom you would like to send a Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary greeting. 3 Mail or deliver your list, along with your check made out to Agudath Achim Sisterhood for $.50 for each circled name, to Barbara Abrams, 24 Raindrop Lane, Bluffton, S.C , or leave your list and check in the synagogue office. 4 Make sure to include your name(s) the way you want it (them) listed. In order for your birthday and anniversary greetings to be delivered in a timely manner, everyone needs to turn in April Mitzvah-Gram sheet by the 15 th of March. If you have any questions about this project, please contact me at barba43@hargray.com, or at (843) or (843) Thanks to everyone for participating in this exciting program.
