A Guide to creating a unit's Scout's own

By Edward S. Allinson The material contained is this guide has come from a number of sources, namely the Goshen Bear workend service started by John Koontz in the 80 s. Also some material comes from publications of PRAY and other organizations like them. Some of the wording has been changed to meet the use of units and to not mention a camp. The material can be used as written or modified to fit a units needs. If in putting together your Scouts own I would encourage you to use other material you find that meets the needs of a particular service. Remember we are doing it for the religious growth of the Scouts, when they get something out of a service, then we have done what was expected of us by Him.

5 scout's own Who, Why, How, When, and Where A Scout is Reverent : A Scout is reverent, he is reverent toward GOD, He is faithful in his religious duties and respects the conviction of others in matters of custom and religion. Scouting has changed since I was a Scout. In my home council, in Ohio, most troops where sponsored by churches, as they still are today, but most to all the boys in a troop belonged to that church. My troop was sponsored by Trinity Methodist Church and was 100 % all Methodist. This made a Scout's Own service a little easier to put together because you could use the church's format and liturgy. In to days units we find different denominations and faiths in any one unit. Sometimes a church sponsored unit may not have any members of that church for a number of years. How then do we hold a Scout's Own service under these conditions? The short answer is very carefully. We do not want to use material that may contradict any Scout's believes. Know the believes of your scouts, if you have a unit of all one denomination your job is easier than those who have Scouts of two or more different denominations. Another important factor in putting together a service is length of time. A Scouit's Own should be long enough to be meaningful and yet short enough so as not to let their minds wonder. It should use as many Scouts as is possible, with readings, prayers, etc. Songs should be well known and easy to sing. Remember you may not have any musical accompaniment, but if you have it, use it. Now to the Who, Why, How, When, and Where. Who? This may be a good time to identify a Chaplain's Aide. If you have one it should be his job to help put together a service, with your guidance. He should be the one to decide who will do what during the service and how long it will be. He also should have a say in picking the place that the service will be held in. The camp fire area is good but there may be a place that would work even better. If you do not have, or can

6 not identify an Aide, you can have a Scout working on his religious emblem to lead the service. Another possibility is a Scout working on Communications Merit Badge. Last have a leader lead but use as many Scouts in the service as possible. Why? This is easy, A Scout is Reverent. You have taken them away from their normal Sunday church service, so give them something to take home and remember.. It may be possible to take the units to a church that is close by, be sure if you do this that the majority of the Scouts are of the same denomination as the church you use. My church is very close to Greenbelt camp grounds and we have had a number of units come to our services when they were in transit to the jamboree or just visiting Washington. When? I think it would be best to hold a Scout's Own as soon as the Scouts are up and before breakfast. In the case of some denominations or on special occasions it may be that an evening service is what needs to be held. In either case the service should be short, meaningful, and give the Scouts something to think about and remember. How? This is the part I like the most. There is an almost endless amount of material to be used in a Scout's Own service. I have put together some of the pieces that have been used in the services at the Goshen Bear workend for the last 10 years. I have group them by category but some items could be used in different places. The two things you need are an opening and a closing. Any thing else can depend on a lot of different things, weather, location, program for the day etc. The following are some of the items that can be used in putting together a Scout's Own.

7 Calls to Worship : Some times you may want a call to worship and other times it is not needed. I have identified at least 10 different calls, they can in some cases be changed to fit a certain trip or time of the year. As with other parts of a service using as many Scouts and or Scouters, I think adds to the service and gives the Scouts a feeling of belonging to the service. It is like a Court of Honor, if everything is done by one person, then why not just put the awards on the table and say come and get yours. Lord Robert Baden-Powell said in SCOUTING FOR BOYS in 1946 " In doing your duty 1 to God always be grateful to Him. Whenever you enjoy a pleasure or a good game, or succeed in doing a good thing, thank Him for it, if only with a word or two, just as you say grace at a meal." So lets us all give thanks to our GOD for this place and this time we have spent together enjoying the pleasures of this camp. GOD of Creation, we thank you for this place, for the fellowship of this time, for the people who fixed our meals, for the opportunity to be together once more in this beautiful place you have created. We thank you for the richness of the earth and this universe which nourish and sustains us. Help us to be more worthy builders and users of this camp, our country, and this earth. The Boy Scout Air Manual of 1942 states that : 2 " A citizen is a person ready to do one's part, recognizing that a person has duties as well as rights in a democracy. If one wants free speech, he must earn that right by according freedom of speech to all others. Citizenship means caring about others and helping them. A person must live by ideals. That is the very foundation of life in a democracy. " In today's society we are faced with the very same challenges that faced America in The world is at war. A war of ideas, a war for the youth of the world.

8 A war for our youth's talents, energies and very self. Blessed be the works of our hands, O Holy One. 3 Blessed be the hands that have helped boys through Scouting. Blessed be the hands that have nurtured creativity. Blessed be the hands that have taught a new skill. Blessed be the hands that have planted new seeds in the minds of others. Blessed be the hands that have cleaned, washed, scrubbed, hammered, and fixed here. Blessed be the hands that have held the knowledge of the past and give it to the future. Blessed be the hands that hold the promise of the future. Blessed be the works of YOUR hand O Holy GOD. We thank You, O GOD, for this day, for morning sun and evening star ; for flowering 4 of trees and flowing of streams, for life-giving rains and cooling breeze, the cycle of growth and decay, of life and death. When our eyes behold the beauty and grandeur of this place, we see the wisdom, power and goodness of its Creator. We awake and, behold! It's a great day! Open our eyes, and our hearts, so that we might sense the good things we have from the Lord, our GOD. Baden Powell said at the World Jamboree in October 1921 " How GOD must laugh at 5 the little differences that we set up amongst ourselves under the camouflage of religion. politics, patriotism, or class, to the neglect of the greater tie - that of Brotherhood in the Human family! " On this camping trip we come from different Patrols, and maybe even different Troops, yet we are working together as part of the World Brotherhood of Scouting. If we can do such here, we can do the same in our towns, states, and in this country.

9 O Lord, grant that we may so carry out in our lives the spirit of the Scout Law, that we 6 may teach it to others by our living it ourselves. Grant also, O Lord, that we may under stand the true meaning of service for others. As a sign of our memberships in the World Brotherhood of Scouting let us begin this Scout's Own be reciting the English Scout Law The English Scout Law A Scout is to be trusted. A Scout is loyal. A Scout is friendly and considerate. A Scout is a brother to all Scouts. A Scout has courage in all difficulties. A Scout makes good use of his time and is careful of possessions and property. A Scout has respect for himself and for others. Lord stay with us as we come together, let all the earth keep silence in Your presence. 7 May the Scouts and Scouters who have camped here and the one yet to come, continue to know Your presence as we see and feel Your presence whenever we come here. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you - Christianity 8 This is the sum of all duty : treat others as you would be treated - Hinduism No one of you is a believer until you desire for another that which you desire for yourself Islam What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor - Judaism In happiness and suffering, in joy and grief, regard all creatures as you would regard your own self - Jainism Be not estranged from another for GOD dwells in every heart - Sikhism Human nature is good only when it does not do unto another whatever is not good for its own self - Zoroastrianism

10 Mother, Father, GOD, Universal Power ; By the life in these woods You remind us of the 9 wonders of life. Touch our hearts with the glorious oneness of all creation, As we strive to respect all the living beings on this planet. Penetrate our souls with the beauty of this earth, as we strive to respect all the living beings on this earth. As we attune ourselves to the rhythm and flow of the seasons, awaken our minds with the knowledge to achieve a world in harmony. Grant us the wisdom to realize that we make heaven on earth for all people. Lord Robert Baden-Powell said in the 1946 edition of SCOUTING FOR BOYS, " The 10 object of a camp is ( a ) to meet the boy's desire for the open-air life of the Scout, and ( b ) to put him completely in the hands of his Scoutmaster for a definite period for individual training in character and initiative and physical and moral development. " This weekend makes it possible to implement Baden Powell's words. Without this camp site the Leaders and Scouts would not have the experience of camping. The leaders would not have the chance to mold the development of the young men in their charge. Let us give thanks and praise for this camp and this opportunity to camp together. This is the day our GOD has made for us. 11 Let us rejoice and be glad in it. GOD our Father and Mother, we thank You for the beauty of this camp, for the food so 12 well prepared for us, and the community of this troop. Help us to better serve Scouts in our own troop, the District, and the Council. Help us to love others more, to be concerned with the problems of our day, and to understand Your will in our actions. Grant us the strength to live wisely and well, to be worthy users of Your creation and ready and

11 willing workers for the causes of goodness. Opening Prayer : As I said earlier sometimes you may want to begin with just a prayer. You could follow a call to worship with an opening prayer. The main thing is do not do it the same two times in a row, the Scouts will remember. His light surrounds us, His love enfolds us, His power protects us, 1 His presence watches over us, Wherever we are, He is. O Great Spirit of the North, O Great Spirit of the South, 2 O Great Spirit of the East, O Great Spirit of the West, O Great Spirit, You are One. You have given us our house. Where there is food, Where there is drink, Where there is clothes, You have given us our house. Where there is fellowship, Where there is companionship, Where we can grow, Where we can learn, Where we can know You, O Great Spirit : You are One, Our house in One, We are One! A Native American Prayer May the time be not too distant, O Lord, when all Your children will understand that 3 they are brothers and sisters, so that, one in spirit and one in fellowship, they may be forever united before You. Then shall Your kingdom be established on earth, and the world of Your prophet shall be fulfilled : " The Lord will reign for ever and ever. " Amen > From the Jewish Sabbath Service The true servants of the Gracious GOD are the following : 4 Those who walk upon earth with humility and when they are tempted by the evil ones, they respond : Peace ; Those who pass the hours of the night in prayers and standing before the Lord ; Those who pray : Lord turn away from us the punishments of hell. For it is a heavy torment, it is indeed a evil dwelling place; Those who are neither extravagant

12 nor stingy in spending, but keep a balance between the two ; Those who repent and believe and do good deeds. Amen > From the Koran, Al-Furquan, Part 19, Chapter 25 GOD of the mountains and hills, make me tail and strong ; 5 Tall enough and strong enough to right some wrongs. GOD of the stars, make me steadfast and sure ; GOD of every lake and stream, flow through my life and make it clean ; Let me do nothing base or mean. GOD of the trees and woods, keep me fresh and pure ; GOD of the rain, wash from my life all dirt and stain ; Pure and strong let me remain. GOD of the seed and soil, plant in my heart Thy love ; GOD of the darkness and day, through shadows or light, by me stay. Guide my way. GOD of the radiant sun, light my life ; GOD of the glorious dawn, make each day a fresh start. GOD of the evening peace, keep me free from fear and strife. GOD of the birds, sing in my heart. GOD of the surging waves and sea, wide horizons give to me ; Help me to see the world as You would have it to be ; GOD of the lovely rose, make me lovely too ; GOD of the morning dew, each day my faith in You renew. GOD of all growing things, keep me growing too. Amen A Campers Prayer Psalm 113 : In Praise of the Lord's Goodness 6 You servants of the Lord praise His name!

13 May His name be praised now and forever. From the East to the West praise the name of the Lord! The Lord rules over all nations ;His glory is above the heavens. There is no one like the Lord our GOD. He lives in the heights above, but he bends down to see the heavens and the earth. Amen We thank you GOD, our Mother and Father, for the eyes to see the beauty of Your earth ; 7 For the eyes to see the beauty and love and happy sights around us every day. For minds that find new thoughts to think, new wonders to explore ; For health and freedom to enjoy the good You have given us all. Help us to be a beacon of hope to those who see sights and hear sounds of ugliness and find only sadness in the world. We pray that our eyes are open, to see our neighbor's need ; and our ears are open to hear the cries for help that are around us. Make our minds alert to plan the best for one another's good, that all the citizens of the world may be at peace with each other. Amen Oh, come let us sing unto the Lord : Let us make a joyful noise unto the rock of our 8 salvation. Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving. Let us make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms. For the Lord is a great GOD and a great King above all gods, the heights of the mountains are His also. The sea is His and He made it ; and His hands formed the dry land ; Oh, come let us worship and bow down ; let us kneel before the Lord our maker, for He is our GOD ; and we are the people of His pasture and the sheep of His hand. Amen

14 We ask in the name of the World Brotherhood of Scouting : 9 That Scouting continues to teach us stillness as the grasses are stilled by the morning fog. That Scouting continues to teach us humility as in the first time we tried to tie a splice. That Scouting continues to teach us caring as Scoutmasters care for their Troops. That Scouting continues to teach us freedom as the Eagle soars in the sky. That Scouting continues to teach us courage as the tree which stands alone to start a new forest. We ask these blessings in the name of our GOD, Father and Mother to us all. Amen At the beginning of this day we come before You, our Father and Mother, in the company 10 of our fellow Scouts. Help us to live as Scouts and Scouters should live, that we may think those thoughts and do those things that come forth from our prays and the Scout Oath ; In Your name we pray. Amen Open our eyes, and our hearts, so that we might sense the good things we have from 11 the Lord, our GOD. All: We come together today to worship GOD, to hear what He has to say to us, and to 12 offer Him all that we have and are : so let us be quite and remember that we are in His presence. O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and ever living GOD, we give you thanks for bring- 13 ing us safely to this day. Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger, and in all things guide us to know and do Your will, through Jesus Christ out Lord.

15 Responsive Readings : This is another place you can involve a number of Scouts, using a different one to read a part of the response. There are a lot of different responsive reading to choose from, and it would be best to find one that goes with the general theme of your service. I have tried to list them in Scout Oath, Law and then the others. Our honor is a quality we possess because of our dignity as human beings and children 1 of GOD. Our " best " means to give all we have, it means to keep striving to do what we know is right, and in the Oath it means we will try to be good Scouts by fulfilling our Scout duties as expressed in the Scout Law. ON MY HONOR I WILL DO MY BEST. Our duty to GOD and country mean chiefly two things : obedience and loyalty. The duties we owe the House of GOD, to our country, to parents, to one another, and to ourselves comes from some command of GOD, the Scout Law sums up all the qualities a Scout should have and without which he can not be a good Scout. TO DO MY DUTY TO GOD AND MY COUNTRY AND TO OBEY THE SCOUT LAW. Our Lord told us that love of our neighbors was like the first law of love of GOD. The first children of GOD were known by the love they had for one another. Real human charity or love prompts us to want to help others at all times. Our Scout training will give us skills and knowledge that will put us in a better position to do this. TO HELP OTHER PEOPLE AT ALL TIMES. Scouting offers us many opportunities to grow strong physically. To be alert and ready requires us to give special care to those gifts of soul - intellect and will - that makes us unto GOD. " Morally straight " means we must try to know what is right and true, and to love what is good and choose it. TO KEEP MYSELF PHYSICALLY STRONG- MENTALLY AWAKE AND MORALLY STRAIGHT.

16 Thou shalt love the Lord thy GOD with all thine heart Deuteronomy 6 2 On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to GOD. Blessed is the nation whose GOD is the Lord. Deuteronomy 6 : 8 On my honor I will do my best to keep myself, morally straight. Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5 : 16 Another version has the same wording but puts the Scouts first followed by the leader. 3 There are quite a few Scout Law responsive, you may notice that sometimes the same phrases used for a law in more than one piece. " The person who is dishonest shall not live in My house, the person who is untruthful shall not stand before My eyes. " Psalm 101 : 7 A Scout is Trustworthy. One of the marks of growing up is our readiness to accept responsibilities willingly. A Scout is Obedient. Our moods make our days. If we are grouch, our day is gloomy. If we are happy, our day is always happier. A Scout is Cheerful. The world offers many gifts, a wise person uses them with care. A Scout is Thrifty. To each of us comes danger, difficult tasks, and temptations. In choice of courage or cowardice, may we be brave. A Scout is Brave.. Cleanliness is next to Godliness. No one is worthy of trust who does not recognize his dignity and the dignity of all men as children of GOD. A Scout is Loyal. Because our first loyalty is to GOD, a Scout is loyal to all whom loyalty is due - his parents, his church, and his country. A Scout is Helpful. Christ has told us that the good turns we do for others he will consider as done to him. Our motive, or reason why we are helpful, is that we see Christ in everybody. If our Lord was willing to die for everybody, a Scout certainly should be ready to render help. The whole Scout program gives us an opportunity to be helpful. A Scout is Friendly. The basis and motive of this point of the Law is Christian charity. We are all children of the same Father, and Brother of Jesus Christ. Recognizing this, a Scout should be a friend to all, and a brother to every other Scout. A Scout is Courteous. A Scout should respect the image of GOD in everyone. The meaning of love as a Scout should be taken from the words of Christ himself -- " I have come not to be served. but to serve. " A Scout is Kind. This point of the Law refers mostly to animals. They exist for our use. They have lives and feelings and GOD has given them to us as a trust : as such we must use them well, never abusing or mistreating them. A Scout is Obedient. Jesus Christ gave us an example of perfect obedience throughout His life. This will be

25 a difficult point of the Law for a Scout to keep because it will mean discipline and giving up his own will at times. He should obey, not because the command pleases him, but because the one giving it has the right to do so, is someone authority, and is right in doing so. Disobedience brought death and sin into the world ; obedience brought our salvation. Real victory comes from obedience -- first to GOD, then to all he has placed in authority as long as they deserve our obedience. A Scout is Cheerful. Joy should be one of the marks of a child of GOD. A Scout will have joy in his heart and manifest if outwardly by his cheerful manner. A Scout is Thrifty. Thrift teaches self-respect, making us unwilling to be a burden to others. Far from being a burden, we are able by thrift to help them. A Scout is deeply concerned with preserving our natural resources. A Scout is Brave.. He can face danger even if he is afraid. He has courage to stand for what he thinks is right even if others scorn him. A Scout is Clean. He keeps clean in body and thought, stands for clean speech, clean sport, clean habits ; and travels with a clean crowd. A Scout is Reverent. He is reverent toward GOD. He is faithful in his religious duties and respects the convictions of others in manners of custom and religion. When facing deceit and dishonesty, 9 let us be Trustworthy. If we see hypocrisy and faithlessness,

26 let us be Loyal. Where disregard of others and mere materialism prevail, let us be Helpful. When you see someone alone and forsaken, let us be Friendly. In an atmosphere of ill manners, let us be Courteous. Where some measure manliness in brutality and crudeness, let us be Kind. Though lawbreaking and rule - scoffing are common, let us be Obedient. While others grumble and grouch, let us be Cheerful. In an environment blighted by waste and extravagance, let us be Thrifty. When confronted with danger and temptation, let us be Brave. As we see filth and pollution everywhere, let us be Clean. While witnessing impiety and irreverence, let us be Reverent. In short, in a world that is lamenting the lack of good examples, let us as Scouts and Scouters, stand out to the world by living the Scout Law. The 23 rd Psalm 10 The Lord is my Shepherd. I have everything I need.

27 He lets me rest in fields of green grass and leads me to quite pools of fresh water. He gives me new strength. He guides me in the right paths, as He has promised. Even if I walk through the deepest darkness, I will not be afraid, Lord, for you are with me. Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me. You prepare a banquet for me, where all my enemies can see me. You welcome me as an honored guest, and fill my cup to the brim. I know that Your goodness and love will be with me all my life, and Your house will be my home as long as I live. Psalm 147 : 1,24-29, Lord, send out Your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Lord, send out Your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord, my GOD, You are great indeed. How manifold are Your works, O Lord, the earth is full of Your creatures. Lord, send out Your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. If You take away their breath, they perish and return to dust. When You send forth Your Spirit, they are created and renew the face of the earth. Lord, send out Your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. May the glory of the Lord endure forever, may the Lord be glad in His works. Pleasing to Him be our name : I will be glad in the Lord. Lord, send out Your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord ; Psalm let us shout to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before Him with thanksgiving,

28 and extol Him with music and song. For the Lord is a great GOD, the great King above all gods. In his hands are the depths of the earth, and the mountains peaks belong to Him. The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. For He id our GOD and we are the people of His pasture, the flock under His care. You servants of the Lord praise His name! 13 May His name be praised now and forever. From the East to the West praise the Lord! The Lord rules over all nations ; His glory is above the heavens. There is no one like the Lord our GOD. He lives in the heights above, but bends down to see the heavens and the earth. Amen Lord of heaven and earth, You made all things beautiful. You have provided green 14 forest and refreshing streams. You have arranged the orderly procession of day and night for our work and rest. Thank You for the mountains and the prairies, the roaring sea, and the gentle breeze. Thank You for roofs that shelter us, for clothing that protects us, and for food and drink. Thank You for our work, for projects that are done well, and for the approval of supervisors and teachers. Thank You for all who serve at night to make our days more pleasant. Thank You for associates at work, for their encouragement and praise, and for the joy

29 of human friendships. Thank You for our cities and our countryside's, for farms and factories, for streets and highways, and for all of life that flows so swiftly before us. Thank You for children at play, their boundless energy, and their shouts of joy and laughter. Thank You for the morning greetings we received, and for all the smiles that come from faces loved by You. Thank You for Christian parents, for their affection and their care. Hear us, Lord, as we give thanks for personal blessings. Silent prayer. Thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, for His coming to us in Word and sacrament, for His giving and forgiving, and listening to our prayers. Lead us in thankful living today and always, Amen " The word of GOD is a tree to them that hold fast to it " 15 Because a Scout is reverent - he strives to be true to GOD, to study the bible and to live according to its commands. " Seek the peace of the city and pray unto the Lord for it, for in the peace there of shall you have peace. " Because a Scout is reverent - he is loyal to America and its ideals of religious liberty for all. " All men should be mindful of the well-being of one other. " Because a Scout is reverent - he is loyal to his people, and is ready to help his fellow men everywhere. " Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land. " Because a Scout is reverent - he is a devoted and loyal son to his parents. " Oh, how good it is, how pleasant, for brothers to dwell together in unity. " Because a Scout is reverent - he strives to be a good Scout, a good person, and a good

30 American at all times. " The Lord by wisdom founded the earth ; by understanding He established the heavens - 16 My son, keep sound wisdom and discretion ; let them not escape from your sight " Learning is now easy, and wisdom is a far goal. May I appreciate the blessing I have in education. May all my learning opportunities lead me toward understanding and wisdom. " The beginning of wisdom is this ; Get wisdom ; and whatever you get, get insight. " Wisdom is the climax of my learning along the way. It is the completion of the jigsaw puzzle of learning. May I put together the pieces of information and knowledge well, so that wisdom may result. " Keep hold of instruction, do not let go. " May I not be tempted to quit even when things are rough. May I realize, deep inside me the value of education in all forms. " Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Take heed to the path of your feet, then all your ways will be sure. " May my learning help me be a better person, upright, able to fulfill my purposes and use my abilities. May I find joy in education and strength in my tasks of learning. I am thankful for all who aid me in the learning process. May my delight in learning never end as long as I live. GOD be gracious to us and Bless us, 17 And cause Thy face to shine upon us. That Thy way may be known on the earth, Thy salvation among the nations. Let the people praise Thee, O GOD ; Let all the people praise Thee. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy ;

31 For Thou will judge the people with uprightness, And guide the nations on the earth. Let the people praise Thee, O GOD ; Let all the people praise Thee. The earth has yielded its produce ; GOD, our GOD, blesses us. GOD blesses us. That all the ends of the earth may fear Him.

32 Poems, Thoughts, etc. : This section can be left out of a service, but remember you have a good opportunity to give a Scout a chance to be part of the service. Again we have some that would fit into a partic-- ular theme, others can be used under different circumstances. Two of the shortest ones could be used in the same service, particularly if you do not have one of the responsive readings. The tree that never had to fight for sun and sky and air and light, 1 That stood out in the open plain and always got its share of rain, Never became a forest king ; But lived and died a scrubby thing. The Scout who never had to toil, who never had to win his share. of sun, sky, light, and air, Never became a whole person, But lived and died as he began. Good timber does not grow in ease, The stronger the wind, the stronger the trees, The farther the sky, the grater the length, The more the storm, the more the strength, By sun and cold, by rain and snows, In trees or Scout, good timber grows. When Thomas Edison was working on improving the first light bulb, the story goes. He 2 handed a finished bulb to a young helper, who nervously carried it upstairs, step by step. At the last moment, the boy dropped the bulb, requiring the whole team to work another 24 hours to make a second bulb. Edison looked around, then handed the second bulb to the same boy. The gesture probably changed the boy's life. Edison knew that more than the bulb was at stake. We are a Brotherhood rather than an organization, moved by the spirit and unwritten 3 law or loyalty, rather than printed rules and regulations. Brothers we are to our boys, brothers to each other we must be, if we are going to do any good. What we need in the Scouting Movement is not just the spirit of good-natured tolerance but the watchful

33 sympathy and readiness to help others. If you want your father to take care of you, that's Paternalism. 4 If you want your mother to take care of you, that's Materialism. If you want Uncle Sam to take care of you, that's Socialism. If you want your comrades to take care of you, that's Communism. If you want to take care of yourself, that's Americanism. However, if you want to take care of this campsite, then you are a Scout. A Scout looks for the good in people instead of harping on the worst. 5 A Scout opens doors where despair closes them. A Scout discovers what can be done instead of grumbling about what cannot. A Scout draws his power from deep trust in GOD and the basic goodness of human nature A Scout " lights a candle " instead of " cursing the darkness. " A Scout regards problems, small and large, as opportunities. A Scout pushes ahead when it would be easy to quit. A Scout puts up with modest gains, realizing that " the longest journey starts with one step " A Scout accepts misunderstanding as the price for serving the greater good of others. A Scout is reverent and listens to the call of his GOD. Oh, come let us sing unto the Lord : 6 Let us make a joyful noise unto the rock of our salvation; Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving. Let us make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms. For the Lord is a great GOD and a King above all gods. The Heights of the mountains around us are His also.

34 The seas are His and He made them, and His hands formed the dry land And His hands formed the waters before we were made. Take time to think It is the source of power. 7 Take time to play Take time to read Take time to pray It is the secret of perpetual youth. It is the fountain of wisdom. It is the greatest power on earth. Take time to love and be loved.. It is a GOD-given privilege. Take time to be friendly It is the road to happiness. Take time to laugh Take time to give Take time to work It is the music of the soul. It is too short a day to be selfish. It is the price of success. Take time to do charity It is the key to heaven. A Psalm of Thanksgiving - Psalm 100 : Acclaim the Lord with joy, all the earth. 8 Serve the Lord with gladness ; Come before His presence with singing. Know that the Lord He is GOD ; It is He that has made us, and we are His, his people, and the flock He shepherds. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise ; Give thanks unto Him, and bless His name. For the Lord is good ; His loving kindness endureth forever, And His faithfulness unto all generations. Your life is such a precious thing. And only GOD could give it, 9 But you have such a privilege, for only you can live it. If problems great beset your soul, the Father always loves you,

35 He has the power to guide and keep, and sets a watch above you. Each day's a treasure for your care, with joys and sorrows, pain and peace, and landscapes bathed with beauty. It is your privilege to live, today, perhaps tomorrow, So live in such a blessed way, as not to cause folks sorrow. - J. T Bolding Slow me down, Lord : Ease the pounding of my heart by the quieting of my mind. 10 Steady my hurried pace with a vision of the eternal reach of time. Give me, amidst the confusion of my day, the calmness of the everlasting hills. Break the tensions of my nerves and muscles with the music of the singing streams that live in my memory. Help me to know the magic restoring power of sleep. Teach me the art of taking minute vacations of slowing down to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to pat a dog, to read a few lines of a good book. Remind me each day of the fable of the hare and the tortoise that I may know that the race is not always to the swift ; that there is more to life than increasing it's speed. Let me look upward into the branches of the towering oak and know that it grew great and strong because it grew slowly and well. Slow me down, Lord, and inspire me to send my roots deep into the life's enduring values that I may grow toward the stars of my greater destiny. The spirit lives, there is no doubt, within the heart of every Scout, 11 The hope lives on, the dream survive, The Scouting spirit is alive! In England, many years ago, there lived a man who sought to sow, The seeds of brotherhood of man, and there the spirit first began. The Scouting spirit spread about, to nations east, west, north, and south, And soon, on every land and shore, young men were taught the Scouting Law.

36 We camped and learned of nature's ways, we gloried in our youthful days, We ventured where all others feared, because we knew we were prepared. The world has changed as years went by, society's values went awry. And many ask, " What is the worth of Scouting on this wretched earth?" But each new Scout who learns our law, brings with him hope, and much, much more, Each generation of Scouts gives, the proof that Scouting's spirit lives. The treasured values of the past, still guide Scouts of today ; they last, In spite of changes that we see, around us in society. And still, adventures filled with fun, await today's Scouts, every one ; In them that spirit, born of old, may yet transform this sorry world. And so we say without a doubt, that in the heart of every Scout, The hope lives on, the dreams survive, The Scouting spirit is alive! A Camper's Ten Commandments Thou shalt do thy share and more ; 12 Thou shat keep thy sense of humor ; Thou shalt do thy camp duties to the best of thy ability ; Thou shalt not cry over burnt food ; Thou shalt treat other people as you would wish them to treat you ; Thou shalt not pollute or destroy ; Thou shalt not giggle all night ; Thou shalt not forget about personal cleanliness ; Thou shalt spread thy friendship to someone new ; Thou shalt listen to thy leaders, for they are wise in the ways of making camp a happy time for everyone. Scouting's fun and Scouting's grand, like traveling from land to land. 13

37 Climbing up the Scouting trail, not stopping for wind or hail. For Scouting is a treasured thing, learning about what life will bring. Bobcat, Wolf, and Bear are fun, when you get your Webelos badge your almost done. So, if you see a loyal Scout, notice that he tries to do lot of good deeds For me and you. It was spring, but it was summer I wanted, the warm days, and the great outdoors. 14 It was summer, but it was fall I wanted, the colorful leaves, and the cool, dry air. It was fall, but it was winter I wanted, the beautiful snow, and the holiday season. It was winter, but it was spring I wanted, the warmth, and the blossoming of nature. I was 20, but it was 30 I wanted, to be mature, and sophisticated. I was middle aged, but it was 20 I wanted, the youth, and the free spirit. I was retired, but it was middle aged I wanted, the presence of mind, without limitations. My life is over, but I never got what I wanted. First love and serve GOD. Second love and serve your neighbor. In doing you duty to 15 GOD always be grateful to Him. Whenever you enjoy a pleasure or a good game, or succeed in doing a good thing, thank Him for it, if only a word or two. - Baden-Powell He enjoys a hike through the woods more than he does a walk over the city streets. 16 He knows the stars by name and can find his way by them. When he walks through the woods, he sees things others do not see. He speaks softly and answers questions modestly. He knows a braggart but does not challenge him. His sense of honor is his only taskmaster, and his honor he guards as jealously as did the knights of old. A Scout practices self-control, for he knows that men who master problems in the
