1 Living the Word STYLE GUIDE QUICK REFERENCE Updated Component Information Examples Activity Sheet A one-time-only, downloadable, reproducible page used in lessons for all ages. Every week take-home pages are not Activity Sheets, they have their own unique name for each age level. Activity Sheet is title case. Activity Sheets labels always include the lesson number, including the # sign. Activity Sheets should be labeled alphabetically by the order they appear in the lesson, with A the first Activity Sheet used, B the second, etc. The letter designation is always preceded by a period. Supplies - Activity Sheet #3-24.A BEFORE CLASS: Make copies of Activity Sheet #3-24.A for each student. Activity Titles Amen Answer Key Answers in Leader Guides ASL words Activity titles are in title case, only using capital letters for the principle words. Articles, conjunctions, and prepositions do not get capital letters unless they start the title. Activity titles are not enclosed in quotes. When a prayer ends in Amen, include a period. The term used in Leader Guides for answers provided to puzzles and games in the Activity Sheets. Answers are then listed beginning on the next line. Use a capital letter to begin the answer and ending punctuation. When leader content includes references to American Sign Language (ASL) signs or other motions for specific words, the word should be formatted in Challenge kids to figure out Math Madness on Activity Sheet #X.XX.A Answer Key IVADD is DAVID PEESH is SHEEP Count the disciples on the Activity Sheet. 2 BCE and CE Bible Direct quotes and citations Bible Book numbering italics with no quotations or parentheses. The phrase the word is not required before the word in italics. Biblical dates should be identified with BCE (Before the Common Era) or CE (Common Era) rather than BC and AD. No periods should be used between the letters (BCE, not B.C.E.). The year should always precede the era (587 BCE, 70 CE), No era designation is needed for non-biblical dates When Bible verses are cited as Key Verses, include the verse with ending punctuation. Then include the citation. Only use quotes when they are in the Bible text itself. When the Bible is quoted, default to the NRSV unless another translation is desired for a specific reason and then it should be noted (and footnoted). Bible citations should not be abbreviated unless there is a specific reason to do so (e.g. teaching book abbreviations). Numbered books (1 Kings, 2 John, etc.) should use Arabic numerals, not Roman numerals (not II John). When you quote from a Bible passage within a longer text (e.g. Background for Teachers), use quotation marks and a parenthetical citation. If the cited book and chapter are very clear, then you may quote only the verse(s). If so, please use v. for a single verse and vv. for multiple verses. Partial verse letters should only be used if it is a part of the assigned text or if it is necessary for clarity. Use numbers rather than Roman numerals for Bible books (2 Kings, not II Kings). 11 Living the Word: Capitalization Rules Updated The following are proper nouns should always be capitalized: Bible (synonyms, and parts) Book/Letter (as a part of a name/title of a biblical book when referring to a specific book of the Bible) Christian Church (when referring to all Christians everywhere) Festivals (biblical and modern) Gentiles God (and names/titles of God) Gospel (when referring to a book in the Bible) Magi Messiah (when used as the expected king and deliverer of the Jews) Parts of a worship service Place names Religious items Sabbath (as day of the week or religious festival) Scripture Torah Titles of Jesus Word of God Examples: Synonyms: The Bible, Word of God, Scriptures Parts: The Torah, Penteuch, Histories, Old Testament, Letters, Gospels Book of Genesis Gospel of Luke Letter to the Ephesians God s mission for the Church in all times and places is to spread the love of Jesus throughout the world. The Feast of Weeks, All Saints Day, Transfiguration Sunday. Paul declared that in Jesus, there is no distinction between Gentiles or Jews. God, our Rock and our Redeemer, the Holy Spirit, our loving Father, the Word made flesh. BUT: God is like a loving father. The Gospel of Luke; in the Gospel reading we are studying today Zechariah spoke of the promised Messiah riding on a donkey, which Jesus fulfilled in the events of Palm Sunday. The Passing of the Peace is often before Holy Communion, but can be placed after the Opening Song/Hymn. The Bible refers to the homeland of the Jews in several ways, including the Promised Land, the Land of Israel, Canaan, but not the Holy Land. Ten Commandments, Ark of the Covenant, Holy of Holies On the day before the Sabbath, the Israelites gathered twice the manna as a normal day. In today s Scripture lesson, we learn about Paul s experience on the road to Damascus. On Sinai, God gave Moses the Torah, or instructions (often called the law), on how the people should live as God s own people. Son of God, Messiah, Christ, Savior, Son of Man. 11
12 The following should not be capitalized unless in a title or at the beginning of a sentence: biblical church (when referring to a particular congregation, though congregation is preferred) cosmos creation gospel (when referring to the good news) good news he/him/his (referring to Jesus) heaven kingdom law pass the peace (as a statement of action) events in Jesus life sabbath (the practice of a day of rest) temple/tabernacle universe Examples: In the biblical story of the flood Each local church (congregation) shows God s love in a unique way. Throughout the whole cosmos All of God s creation rejoices It is our responsibility to share this gospel at all times, when necessary using words. The gospel is literally the good news of God s love for all people embodied in Jesus, the Son of God. Jesus loved his disciples Jesus prayed to his Father in heaven. The kingdom of heaven is synonymous with the kingdom of God, used mostly in the Gospel of Matthew. God gave the Torah, often called the law, to Moses on Mount Sinai. During the Passing of the Peace in the worship service, congregation members pass the peace of God to each other. From the incarnation, through his baptism and transfiguration, and finally through his crucifixion and resurrection, Jesus embodied God s love for all of creation. Most modern Christians do not take a day of sabbath during their weeks, but a day of rest is important for us physically and spiritually. Jesus sat in the temple, teaching his disciples about what must come to pass. The whole of the universe is God s creation, a masterpiece of God s design. 12
