1 Haggai Malachi: No Substitute for Obedience OT227 Lesson 01 of 02 Haggai & Zechariah: Encouragement to Excellence Listening Guide This Listening Guide is designed to help you ask questions and take notes on what you re learning. The process will accomplish two things: first, it will help process the information in the lecture by keeping your mind engaged with the material. Second, it will allow you to collect your notes in one place for a summary of the lesson s content. If you choose to do additional study or want to teach the material to others, you will have a thorough set of notes to guide you. You may print these Listening Guide pages separately and complete the information as you read, listen to, or watch the lessons. Or as an alternative, you can fill in the fields in this digital version and save to your computer once you are finished. I. Introduction [1] How well did Haggai and Zechariah know each other? [2] What did these two godly prophets encourage their listeners to do? [3] When did they prophesy? [4] What was the urgency about the temple? [5] Why did the people need to be encouraged to build such an important structure? II. Book of Haggai [6] How many prophecies did Haggai deliver? OT227 Listening Guide 2017 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 01 1
2 [7] What was the timeframe of his ministry? A. First Message: Complete the Second Temple (Haggai 1:1 15) [8] What was going on among Judah s people that Haggai addressed? [9] Why were the people in the situation Haggai described in his first message? [10] According to Dr. Stuart, what were the people in Judah in 520 b.c. not getting? B. Second Message: Encouragement (Haggai 2:1 9) [11] What does God mean when He says, I am with you? [12] Why was the temple in Jerusalem important to God? C. Third Message: Instruction and Assurance (Haggai 2:10 19) [13] How do things get consecrated? [14] How do things get defiled? [15] What did Dr. Stuart say is the message here? [16] What lessons did the priests have to learn? D. Fourth Message: Great Things to Come (Haggai 2:20 23) [17] What made Zerubbabel overly cautious about working on the temple? OT227 Listening Guide 2017 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 01 2
3 [18] Who was Zerubbabel? [19] What was God s message to Zerubbabel? III. Book of Zechariah [20] Who was Joshua? [21] What theme that begins the book of Zechariah is similar to the theme that ends Haggai? A. Visions and Messages of Encouragement (Zechariah 1:1 8:23) [22] What issue does the first several chapters of Zechariah talk about? [23] What is the significance of the animals in Zechariah s visions? [24] What message was God giving to Judah s people with the vision of the oxen and the plowmen? [25] What is the significance of the man with the measuring line? [26] What does the vision of the lampstand and the woman in the basket teach? B. Oracles (Zechariah 9:1 14:21) [27] What new material starts off in Zechariah 9? OT227 Listening Guide 2017 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 01 3
4 [28] How long had the Jews practiced idolatry? [29] How did they relate to idolatry during their exile in Babylon? [30] How would God ultimately relate to Judah s people? [31] In what way did Judah s governors contribute to the citizens spiritual health? [32] What does Zechariah 12 present about the Messiah? [33] What does the fountain in Zechariah 13 represent? [34] What does Zechariah 13 predict about Jesus? [35] What picture did Zechariah end his book with in chapter 14? Reflection Record one new fact or insight you discovered in this lesson. Application Meditate for a bit on Dr. Stuart s closing statements. He points out that Zechariah closed his book with a picture of the triumphant Jesus: The Lord takes away all opposition to Him, makes Him finally and utterly powerful. Just as Jesus said of Himself: All power in heaven and earth has been given to me. That is the picture with which the book of Zechariah ends, and of course it is the fact that we count upon ourselves as we follow Christ in this world in our time. How true is that of OT227 Listening Guide 2017 Our Daily Bread Ministries. All Rights Reserved. Lesson 01 4
