2 Warnings From Israel s History Idol Feasts and the Lord s Supper The Believer s Freedom Text: 1 Corinthians 10:1-33, 1. Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2. And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3. And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4. And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 5. But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 7. Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 8. Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. 9. Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. 10. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. 11. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 12. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

3 13. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. 14. Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. 15. I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. 16. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17. For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. 18. Behold Israel after the flesh; are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19. What say I then? That the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? 20. But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. 21. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord s table, and of the table of devils. 22. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? 23. All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient; all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. 24. Let no man seek his own, but every man another s wealth. 25. Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake: 26. For the earth is the Lord s and the fullness thereof. 27. If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. 28. But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that showed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord s, and the fulness thereof: 29. Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other for why is my liberty judged of another man s conscience?

4 30. For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? 31. Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 32. Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: 33. Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. Introduction: I. 1 Corinthians 10:1-11:1 addresses the permissibility of Christians regarding: A. sitting down at idol feasts. B. purchasing meat in the common markets. C. being guests when facts about the origins of the meats served were unknown. (Coffman). II. What is said in this chapter connects with what was said in the previous two chapters. A. This chapter is, therefore, begun with the connective word for. B. Scriptures: 1. 1 Corinthians 8:1, 2, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, bur charity edifieth. And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge; for some with conscience of the idol unto this hour eat it as a thing

5 offered unto an idol; and their conscience being weak is defiled. But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak. For if any man see thee which hast knowledge sit at meat in the idol s temple, shall not the conscience of him which is weak be emboldened to eat those things which are offered to idols; And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. C. Christian liberty and the abuse of the principle of Christian liberty are not to be confused. 1. In 1 Corinthians 9 Paul illustrated this principle by his not accepting support from the churches to which he had a right. 2. For a greater good Paul did not exercise this Christian liberty, right. III. Christians are not to worship idols! There were no exceptions to this principle. (Coffman) Commentary: Warnings From Israel s History 1 Corinthians 10:1, Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; I. Paul did not want the Corinthians to be ignorant of Jewish history including:

6 A. our forefathers were all under the cloud. B. Many Corinthian Christians were not of Jewish extraction. Paul taught them about Jewish history and its importance to the present discussion. 1. Romans 9:6, Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: 2. Galatians 3:27-29, For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ s, then are ye Abraham s seed, and heirs according to the promise. Note: Paul had said earlier that even he could be a castaway. Ancient Israelites did indeed become reprobate castaways. Note: The Corinthians may have thought they were immune to apostacy because of their participation in the Lord s supper and baptism. All Israelites passed through the (Red) sea, but later perished in the wilderness. Note: I would not have you to be ignorant was a common Pauline expression. 1 Corinthians 12:1, 2, Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. 2 Corinthians 1:8, For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life: Romans 1:13, Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles. Romans 11:25, For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye

7 should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles be come in. 1 Thessalonians 4:13. But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. 1 Corinthians 10:2, And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; I. Continued: A. All were baptized unto, into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. B. The crossing of the Red Sea from Egyptian slavery to freedom is a type of Christian baptism. 1 Corinthians 10:3, And did all eat the same spiritual meat; I. Continued: A. all ate the same spiritual food (manna) B. John 6:54-58,Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood dwelleth in me, and I in him As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father; so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live forever. 1 Corinthians 10:4, And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

8 I. Continued: A. all drank the same spiritual drink. B. they drank from a spiritual rock that followed, accompanied them, 1. Jewish legend referred to a literal rock that followed the Israelites in their wanderings. Coffman. C. that rock was in fact Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:5, But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. I. With most of these people, however, God was not well pleased. A. Most of God s chosen people became castaways. B. Number 14:30-32, Doubtless ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I sware to make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. But your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised. But as for you, your carcases, they shall fall in this wilderness. II. Consequently, they were overthrown in the wilderness, their bodies were scattered over the desert. A. Hebrews 3:17-19, But with whom was he grieved forty years? Was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.

9 B. Christians should most certainly not think they cannot fall from grace. 1 Corinthians 10:6, Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. I. These things were examples for Christians showing us... II. that we should not lust after evil things, set out hearts on evil things... A. as they also lusted, did. B. Lust is to strongly desire, crave good or bad things. In scripture lust always refers to evil desires. C. James 1:12-15, Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 1 Corinthians 10:7, Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. I. Don t be idolaters... A. Exodus 32:5, 6, And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord. And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered

10 burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. B. as some of the ancients were, C. as it is written in scripture, D. The people sat down to eat and drink, E. and rose up to play, indulge in pagan revelry. 1 Corinthians 10:8, Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. I. Do not commit fornication, sexual immorality II. as some of the ancients committed... III. of whom 23,000 were struck dead in one day. A. Number 25:9, And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand. B. Twenty-three thousand died in one day. Another one thousand died before this one day. IV. This was a natural progression: lust, idolatry, fornication. 1 Corinthians 10:9, Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. I. Do not test, make trial of the Lord, Christ... A. through provoking the Lord by disobedience and rebellion.

11 B. Numbers 21:5, 6, And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. II. as some of them made trial III. and were killed, perished by the serpents, snakes. 1 Corinthians 10:10, Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. I. Don t grumble, murmur as some of them murmured... A. Murmuring, grumbling, complaining were major sins among the ancient Israelites. B. The church has no place for murmuring, grumbling and complaining. II. and perished by the destroyer, destroying angel. A. Numbers 16:41, But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, Ye have killed the people of the Lord. B. Numbers 25:1-9, And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab. And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor; and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel. And the Lord said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the Lord against the sun, that the fierce anger of the Lord may be turned away from Israel. And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every

12 one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor. And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand. 1 Corinthians 10:11, Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. I. These things happened to them by way of example. A. Romans 15:4, For whatsoever things were written aforetime, were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. II. These things were written for our (Christians ) admonition, warning, III. upon whom the fulfillment, ends of the ages are come. A. Acts 2:16, 17, But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: B. Hundreds of Old Testament prophesies were fulfilled in Christ and the events of the New Testament

13 1 Corinthians 10:12, Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. I. Let the person who thinks he stands firmly, immovably... II. be careful that he doesn t fall, take heed lest he fall. III. If apostacy were not possible, Paul would never have made these statements. 1 Corinthians 10:13, There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. I. No temptation has come upon you but such as man can bear, except what is common to man, II. God is faithful! III. God will not permit you to be tempted beyond, above what you are able to bear. A. Paul refutes the idea that some temptations are irresistible. IV. God will provide with every temptation a way of escape, a way out,... V. so you will be able to endure the temptation, stand up under it. A. No Christian needs to fall from grace. Idol Feasts and the Lord s Supper

14 1 Corinthians 10:14, Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. I. Wherefore, therefore, my beloved, dear friends,... II. flee from idolatry! A. Run from idolatry as if you were running for your life because this is indeed what you are doing in regard to your soul. B. Do not flirt with temptation! Avoid it in all its forms with all your might! C. Put maximum distance between you and sin. 1 Corinthians 10:15, I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. I. I speak to sensible, wise men, people, A. In saying these things (verse 14) Paul was speaking to prudent people who knew the wisdom of what Paul was saying. B. These wise people were strong Christians who flaunted their liberty in Christ while disdaining weak Christians. II. judge for yourselves what I say. A. All right, you smart people, listen to this. (Coffman) 1 Corinthians 10:16, 17, The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? I. For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

15 II. The cup of blessing which we bless, over which we Christians give thanks, A. This is a reference to the communion cup and is historically associated with the last of four cups involved in the Jewish Passover over which the Patriarch pronounced a blessing at the end of the Passover. Farrar via Coffman. III. is it not a participation in, a communion of the blood of Christ? IV. The bread which we break, V. is it not a participation in, a communion of the body of Christ? A. Eating together is a symbol of unity and friendship whether we talk of the Jewish Passover, Christian communion or idol temple worship, dinner. VI. We, who are many are one loaf, bread, one body,... VII. for we all partake of the one bread, loaf. 1 Corinthians 10:18,Behold Israel after the flesh; are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? I. Fleshly Israel partook, had communion with the altar when they ate the sacrifices. II. Those who participated in idol worship partook, had communion with the idols. A. This was true whether or not they intended to worship the idols. 1 Corinthians 10:19, What say I then? That the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

16 I. What was Paul saying? II. Is something sacrificed to idols anything? III. Is an idol anything? A. This Jewish idiom demands a negative answer, response. IV. However, worshiping idols was sinful! Period! 1 Corinthians 10:20, But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. I. The things sacrificed by Gentiles, pagans,... II. are offered as sacrifices to demons, not to God. A. The idols were demonic, evil representatives of the devil. B. The devil used idols to influence souls to depart from God. C. We are to pray for God to deliver us from the evil one and all his devices. III. Do not participate, have communion with demons. A. The devil s influence is powerful and everywhere to be found. B. Christians are to avoid the devil and his demons like the plague they are.

17 1 Corinthians 10:21, Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord s table, and of the table of devils. I. You cannot, I forbid you to drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too;... A. Some at Corinth were outwardly taking the Lord s Supper and participating in idol worship simultaneously. B. Those conducting themselves in this way were actually worshiping demons, not God. C. It is morally impossible to worship God and the devil simultaneously. II. You cannot have a part, partake both of the table of the Lord and of the table of demons. III. Service to God and service to the devil are mutually exclusive. a. Humans can serve either, but not both. 1 Corinthians 10:22, Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he? I. Do we arouse, provoke the Lord to jealousy? A. Idol worship in the Old Testament always provoked the Lord to Jealousy. 1. Exodus 20:5, Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

18 II. Are we stronger than the Lord? A. We do not want to be an enemy of God, pick a fight with the Almighty. B. Luke 14:32, Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace. The Believer s Freedom 1 Corinthians 10:23, All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient; all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. I. All things are lawful, everything is permissible. Not all things are expedient, beneficial. II. All things are lawful; everything is permissible. Not all things edify, are constructive. III. Those disciples at Corinth who wanted to worship idols evidently contended that all things including idol worship were lawful for them. A. Paul responded that even if that were so, all things did not edify, were not constructive, beneficial nor expedient. 1 Corinthians 10:24, Let no man seek his own, but every man another s wealth. I. Let no man seek his own good;... A. This does not forbid enlightened self-interest. Coffman. II. Let each seek his neighbor s good, the good of others.

19 A. Every action on behalf of one s self should be considered in view of its effect on others. B. Christians consider their own and others good. 1 Corinthians 10:25, Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake: I. You (Christians) can eat anything that is sold in the shambles, market. A. Was it permissible for Christians to eat meat purchased from the market when it was likely that this meat had been involved in idol worship? B. Paul now answers this question. II. Don t ask any questions about this meat for conscience s sake, without raising questions of conscience. A. The fact that this meat had likely been offered to idols didn t change the fact that it was perfectly good food. B. Since they had not participated in idol worship, eating meat bought at the public market was not a matter of conscience. 1 Corinthians 10:26, For the earth is the Lord s and the fullness thereof. I. The earth and everything in it is the Lord s. A. The meat being discussed really belonged to God, not to idols. B. Psalm 24:1, The earth is the Lord s, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

20 1 Corinthians 10:27, 28, If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that showed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord s, and the fulness thereof: I. If an unbeliever invites you to a feast, meal,... A. Paul now answers the Corinthian s third question, this one relating to whether a Christian could accept an invitation to dine with a non-christian who was serving meat which had very probably been offered to idols. II.... and you are disposed to accept the invitation, III.... eat whatever is set before you without raising questions of conscience. A. Don t raise unnecessary questions regarding the meat that is being served. B. This is not a matter of principle, conscience. IV. Don t ask any questions for conscience s sake about whether the meat being served had been offered to idols. V. But if you are told that the meat being served had been offered in sacrifice to idols, VI. don t eat it... A. for his sake that told you, showed it to you and... B. for conscience s sake.

21 VII. Since this meat, under these conditions, had been clearly identified as connected with idols, it could not now be eaten by the Christian guest... A. because it would violate the other person s conscience and... B. offend, cause to sin the person who identified the meat as having been offered to idols. C. Christians were to disassociate themselves from that which had been clearly identified as being a part of idol worship. 1 Corinthians 10:29, 30, Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other for why is my liberty judged of another man s conscience? For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? I. Conscience, A. not yours... B. but the other person s conscience who advised you the meat had been offered to idols. II. Why is my freedom, liberty judged by another s conscience? III. If I (Paul) eat with thankfulness why am I evil spoken of, denounced for that for which I give thanks? A. Why am I denounced because of something for which I thank God? B. Paul stated that he will answer this question fully.

22 IV. Paul often presented the position of his adversary and then responded to it in a devastating way so as to demolish it. 1 Corinthians 10:31, Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. I. So whether we eat, drink or do something else, whatever you do,... II. do all to the glory of God. A. This is the end of the matter: Whatever you do, be sure it glorifies God. B. This is the test that all Christians thoughts and actions must pass: Does this glorify God? C. If God is glorified by this thought/deed, it is permissible. D. If God is not glorified thereby, it is not to be done. 1 Corinthians 10:32, 33, Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. I. Don t cause, give an occasion of stumbling, sinning to anybody whether... A. This principle applies to those of all races in and out of the church. B. Jews C. Greeks

23 D. The church of God. II. I (Paul) also try to please everybody in all things, in every way. III. I (Paul) do not seek my own profit, good,... IV. I (Paul) seek the good, profit of many that they may be saved. A. Salvation of every possible soul was Paul s constant unwavering goal. B. This is to be our prime goal as well. V. Paul urged the Corinthian Christians to follow his example in these things as he followed the example of Christ. A. 1 Corinthians 4:16, Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me. B. Philippians 3:17, Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. C. 1 Thessalonians 1:6, And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:

24 Questions 1 Corinthians 10: Paul addressed three questions in this chapter dealing with the: (1) (2) (3) 2. How does what is said in this chapter relate to what was said in the last two chapters? 3. The Corinthians may have thought they were immune to apostacy because of their participation in the Lord s Supper. How did Paul show that this was absolutely not correct?

25 4. Paul did not want the, the and the to be ignorant. He does not want us to be either. 5. Why were Israelites in the wilderness overthrown? 6.
