3 The President s Column Hear Ye Hear Ye get your Machzorim If you have not already heard. Or Shalom is getting new machzorim for High Holiday services. The board has been talking about this for months or maybe years and it is finally going to happen in time for this year s high holiday services. I would like to thank Nathan Kasimer and all the members of the ritual committee for making their vision become reality. There were many hurtles in their path and they did not let anything stop them. I would also like to thank the Satlow family for their generous donation. I am confident that Jerry has done more for Or Shalom then I will ever know. Jerry and his family stepped up and are sponsoring the purchase of the new machzorim. It is wonderful when members of the community not only make suggestions or requests, but step up and do something to make it happen. What are you doing Friday night 11-May or Saturday morning 12-May? What every it is I am sure it will not be more exciting than attending the Bar Mitzvah of Albert Levin. Yes, our son will be a bar mitzvah. The little boy who ran around Ms. Susan s pre-school will be a man. I hope to see you all at one or both of the services. It is nice to see your children hit major milestones in their life, but it is even better when you can share it with friends and community. I look forward to seeing you are the Art Auction on 10-Jun-18. I really hope you come out and support the event. You are welcome to bring friends from outside the Or Shalom community. 4 Mitzvah of the Month Rabbi Jacob Rosner In biblical times when we were primarily an agrarian people, Shavuot was one of three pilgrimage festivals when we were commanded to ascend to Jerusalem and give thanks for the harvest. As biblical Judaism morphed into rabbinic Judaism, the theme of the festival evolved, and we celebrated the anniversary of the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. In celebration thereof, the portion of Torah we read tells the story of Mount Sinai and the ten words. There is even a kabbalistic custom of staying up all night and studying Torah called tikkum layl Shavuot. When I was rabbi of larger congregations, (and when I was younger) a few hearty men and women would join me in all night study, and we would daven (pray) the morning service at dawn. During the amida we refer to the day as z man matan torotenu (the time of GIVING the Torah. If you are a believer, the events of Sinai were an historical happening, and despite the rabbinic midrash that the soul of every Jew, born and yet to be born, stood at Mount Sinai, the truth is that you and I were NOT there, the Torah was given once and that act is what we celebrate. But each of chooses when and whether to RECEIVE the Torah. Each of us can make a commitment to Torah study and to prayer, to kashrut and a life of mitzvah. There is no more appropriate time to make such a commitment to receive Torah in our lives than the season when we remember how God gave us this greatest of gifts. As we celebrate Shavuot may each of us commit our self receiving the Torah in the spirit it was given HORIZONS 4 May 2018 Iyar, 5778 Sivan, 5778

5 From the Education Director Ellen Glassman OR TAMID RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS Typically, children get excited when counting down to their birthday, Hanukkah and summer vacation, but most do not share the same excitement when counting down the omer. An omer is a unit of measure. The mitzvah of Sefirat HaOmer refers to the 49-day period between the second night of Passover until the day before Shavuot. On the second day of Passover, in the days of the Temple, an omer of barley was cut down and brought to the Temple as a means of thanking G-d for the harvest. The word omer literally means sheaf and refers to these early offerings. The Torah commands us to count seven weeks, recite a blessing and announce the count in both weeks and days. Therefore, on the 18 th day, one would say, Today is eighteen days, which is two weeks and four days of the omer. The counting reminds us of the link between Passover, recalling the Exodus and 50 days later, Shavout, commemorating the giving of the Torah. It also reminds us of the liberation we celebrated during Passover and that the redemption from slavery was not complete until we received the Torah. This explanation is important for our students to learn, but it s not solely what we focus on or how we get them interested or excited to count the omer. Through discussion, thought and action, we will be asking our students to take a 7-week spiritual journey together counting up to the omer instead of counting down. Why count up? Similar to the great debate on Hanukkah between the House of Shammai, who wanted to light 8 candles on the first night and count down to lighting one on the 8 th night, as opposed to the House of Hillel, who believed we should increase our joy each night, lighting one candle on the first night and 8 on the last, we want our children to look forward, take personal inventory, celebrate what they like most about who they are and sift through the grains inside of themselves that they d like to shed in order to be the best they can be. In addition, we ll find ways to act upon and connect these seven emotional Kabbalah attributes to their daily lives: Week 1: Chesed - Loving-kindness Week 2: G vurah -- Justice and discipline Week 3: Tiferet Compassion, harmony and balance Week 4: Netzakh - Endurance Week 5: Hod - Humility Week 6: Y sod Foundation, Bonding Week 7: Malkhut - Sovereignty, leadership Take this journey with us! Count up with us each week! As a school, we will be creating opportunities to perform acts of kindness while helping others and will be exploring ways that we can engage in spiritual reflection, humility and growth. After counting 49 days, take part and reflect on a journey that for some of our children has lasted 10 years and join us on Friday, May 18 th at 6pm at CBENT and on Sunday, May 20 th at Or Shalom as our 10 th grade students David Arlen, Leah Lurie, Jackson Berman, Celia Lourie, Lindsay Meyers and Mackenzie Rosin are Confirmed! Celebrate their accomplishments and this wonderful milestone with our families! Stay tuned for more details! I hope you will join us and count up to all of these spiritual and uplifting opportunities! Happy counting! Ellen Glassman, Director of Education HORIZONS 5 May 2018 Iyar, 5778 Sivan, 5778
