1. Abu Muntafiq reported: He said, O Messenger of Allah, teach me what will save me from Allah s punishment and enter me into Paradise. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, Worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him; establish the prescribed prayers; give the obligatory charity (zakat); (and I think he said) fast the month of Ramadan; and what you love for other people to treat you, treat them that way; and what you hate for other people to treat you, do not treat them that way. [Hadith At-Tabarani, Al-Ma jam Al-Kabeer, Number 15833, Authentic] 2. Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, Whosoever would be delighted to be delivered from the Hellfire and entered into Paradise, then let him die while he witnesses that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger; and he treats people the way he loves to be treated. [Hadith At-Tabarani, Al-Ma jam Al-Awsat, Number 4881, hasan] 3. Iyad ibn Himar narrated from Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in one of his sermon in which he said : Indeed, Allah has revealed to me that I should tell you to be humble, such that no person consider himself superior to another (Ibn Majah) Page 3

4. Those who are compassionate will be treated compassionately by the One who is Most Compassionate. Have compassion to those on earth and the One above heavens will pour compassion on you (Abu Dawud) Allah will not show compassion to those who has no compassion toward people (Bukhari and Muslim) "The best loved by me and the nearest to me on the seats on the Day of Resurrection are those who have the best manners and conduct amongst you, who are intimate, are on good terms with others and are humble; And the most hated by me and who will be on the furthest seats from me are those who are talkative (talk too much/ boasts) and arrogant." (Tirmidhi) 7. Narrated from Aisha, The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: He is a bad person in the sight of Allah who does not behave courteously and people shun away his company because of his bad manners (Bukhari) 8. Indeed, the most grateful people to Allah are those who are most grateful (thankful) to other people (Ahmad) 9. The muslim doesn t (i.e. should not) slander, curse, speak obscenely or speak rudely (Tirmidhi) Page 4

10. The finest among the faithful is the one whose moral character is high, and the best among you are those who are kindest to their women (Tirmidhi) 11. One who desires to be relieved of the pains and worries of the Day of Judgment, should ease the troubles of the destitute or ease his burden. (Sahih Muslim) 12. There is nothing more heavier in the scale of good deeds than having beautiful character. 13. (Abu Dawud) Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, Verily, the most hated man to Allah is the one who is harsh in argument. (Sahih Muslim) 14. I gurantee a house in jannah for one who gives up arguing even if he is in the right, and i gurantee a home in the middle of jannah for one who abandons lying even if for the sake of fun and i gurantee a house in the highest part of 15. jannah for one who has good manners (Abu Dawud) The Messenger of Allah, pece be upon him, said "Should i not inform you a deed which surpasses in rank of (nafl) Salaah, fasting and charity?" They (the Companions) replied: "Yes." He said: "Reconciling people. And breaking up people is a shaver (which shaves away your religion)." (Abu Dawud) Page 5

16. Harithah ibn Wahb reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, He will not enter Paradise who is coarse and conceited. Harithah said, Coarse means rough and unkind. [Abu Dawud] 17. Uqbah ibn Amir reported: I met the Messenger of Allah and I began speaking, taking his hand and saying, O Messenger of Allah, tell me about virtuous deeds. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, O Uqbah, reconcile whoever cuts you off, give to whoever deprives you, and turn away from whoever wrongs you. (Ahmad) 18. Mu adh ibn Anas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, The best of virtues is that you maintain relations with one who cuts you off, that you give to one who deprives you, and that you pardon one who insults you. (Ahmad) 19. Abu Huraira reported: A man said, O Messenger of Allah, a woman prays, fasts, and gives charity often but she annoys her neighbour with her sharp tongue. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, She will be in the Hellfire. He said, O Messenger of Allah, another woman prays, fasts, and gives in charity very little but she does give some cheese for charity and she does not annoy her neighbor with her tongue. He said, She will be in Paradise. [Sahih Ahmad] Page 6

20. He who is deprived of kindness is deprived of goodness. (Muslim) 21. The best of people are those who bring the most benefit to the rest of mankind (Daraqutni, authentic) 22. Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, O Aisha, Allah is gentle and He loves gentleness, and He rewards for gentleness what is not granted for harshness; and He does not reward anything else like it. 23. (Sahih Muslim) Modesty is a part of faith, and those who have faith will be in Paradise. Obscenity is part of harshness, and those who are harsh will be in the Fire (Hell) (Tirmidhi) 24. (Prophet, peace be upon him, never mention the name of person who bothered him. Instead, he s using generalization) Aisha reported: If the Prophet, peace be upon him, heard something about a man, he would not say, What is the matter with so-and-so that he says such-and-such, rather he would say, Why is (it with) some people who say such-and-such? (Abu Dawud) Page 7

25. 'A'isha reported Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) as saying: The most despicable amongst persons in the eye of Allah is one who tries to fall into dispute with others (i.e for nothing but only to display his 26. knowledge and power of argumentation). (Muslim) Abu Abdullah Al-Khadali reported: I asked Aisha about the character of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. She said, He was not indecent, he was not obscene, he would not shout in the markets, and he would not respond to an evil deed with an evil deed, but rather he would pardon and overlook. (Sahih Tirmidhi) 27. Aisha reported: Some people from the Jews came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and they said, Death be upon you, O Abu Al-Qasim! The Prophet said, And upon you. In response, I said, Let there be the death upon you and disgrace! He said, O Aisha, do not use harsh words. I said, Did you not hear what they said? He said, Have I not responded to what they said? In another narration, Aisha cursed them and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, O Aisha, verily, Allah doesn t love harsh words or those who use them. Then Allah the Exalted revealed the verse, When they come to you, they greet you with the word by which Allah does not greet you and they (arrogantly) boast among themselves: Why does Allah not punish us for what we say? (58:8) 28. (Sahih Muslim) Ali ibn Abu Talib reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, Verily, after me there will be conflicts or affairs, so if you are able to end them in peace, then do so. [Musnad Ahmad, Number 1264, authentic] Page 8

1. Abu Huraira said, The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The word of wisdom is the lost property of the believer, so wherever he finds it he has a better right to it. (Tirmidhi). 2. Righteousness is good morality and sin is that which causes discomfort (or pinches) within your soul and which you dislike people to become informed of. (Muslim) 3. God does not look at your forms and possessions, but He looks at your hearts and your actions (Muslim) 4. If you are mindful about God He will be mindful of you, and if you are mindful of God, you will find Him before you. When you ask for anything ask it from God, and if you seek help seek in God. Know that if the people were to unite to do you some benefit they could benefit you only with what God had recorded for you and that if they were to unite to do you some injury they could injure you only with what God had recorded for you. 5. (Ahmad, Tirmidhi) Reported by Shaddad bin Aus, Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said A wise man works modestly toward the Hereafter, while a foolish man follow his low desires yet expecting blessings from Allah (Bukhari) Page 10

6. On the authority of Anas ibn Malik, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: Allah the Almighty said: O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great at it. 7. (Tirmidhi) "Whoever says, 'SubhanAllâh wa bihamdihi,' one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they were as much as the foam of the sea." (Bukhari) 8. Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, Whoever continuously seeks Allah s forgiveness, then Allah will make for him a way out from every hardship, from every anxiety, and will provide him with sustenance from where he does not expect. 9. (Abu Dawud) Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was asked, What enters most people into Paradise? He said, Fear of Allah and good character. He was asked, What enters most people into the Hellfire? He said, The mouth and the private parts. (Tirmidhi) Page 11

10. "There is no harm in wealth for him who fears Allah, Who is Great and Glorious, But for him who fears Allah health is better than wealth, and a happy frame of mind is one of Allah's favours." (Tirmidhi) Wealth is not in vast riches, but wealth is in the selfcontentment (Bukhari, Muslim). Narrated Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Religion is very easy and whoever overburdens himself in his religion will not be able to continue in that way. So you should not be extremists, but try to be 13. near to perfection and receive the good tidings that you will be rewarded (Bukhari) Do not be a people without a will of your own who s saying: If others do well you will also do well and if they do wrong we will do wrong; but accustom yourselves to do good if people do good and do not do wrong if they do evil. (Tirmidhi) 14. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: O Abu Zarr, if you go anywhere to learn one verse of the Qur an, it s better for you than a hundred rakaats of (Nafl) Salaah; if you go anywhere to acquire one law of the knowledge (of the religion), it is better for you than performing a thousand rakaats (Nafal) Salaat, irrespective of whether you practised on it (the knowledge) or not. (Ibn Majah) Page 12

15. Verily, this religion is vast, so enter its depth with gentleness. 16. [Ahmad, Number 27318, Hasan] The Prophet, peace be upon him, would often tell his Companions, "Shall I tell you about the best of deeds, the most pure in the sight of your Lord, about the one that is of the highest order and is far better for you than spending gold and silver, even better for you than meeting your enemies in the battlefield where you strike at their necks and they at yours?" The Companions replied, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet, peace be upon him, said : "Remembrance of Allah." (Narrated by Tirmidhi, Ahmad, hadith hasan) In relation to this : "Remember Me (Allah), I shall remember you." (Qur'an 2:152) And be mindful, only in the remembrance of Allah, a heart shall find rest (Qur an 13 : 28) 17. Fear Allah wherever you are, and follow up a bad deed with a good deed and it will wipe it out, and behave well towards people. (Tirmidhi) 18. A strong person is not the one who run down others in wrestling (or with physical power); a strong person is the one who able to control himself when he s angry (Bukhari) Page 13

19. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, stated : He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride (arrogance) shall not enter Paradise. A person (amongst his audience) said: Verily a person loves that his dress (appearance) should be fine, and his shoes should be fine. He (the Messenger of Allah, pbuh) remarked: Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace. Pride is rejecting the truth (out of self-conceit) and look down at the people (Muslim) Mercy is not removed except from a wretched person (Tirmidhi) Avoid envy, for envy devours good deeds just as fire devours wood. (Abu Dawud) 22. Ubaidullah ibn Mihsan reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, Whoever among you wakes up secure in his property, healthy in his body, and he has his food for the day; it is as if 23. he were given the entire world. [Tirmidhi] Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, Verily, Allah has pardoned my followers for their bad thoughts within themselves as long as they do not speak of it or act upon it. [Sahih Muslim] Page 14

24. Oh Allah, I seek refuge with You from knowledge which doesn't bring benefit, from a heart which is not humble, from a self which is not content, and from a supplication which is not answered. 25. (Sahih Muslim) The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Three things that destroy: The greed that is obeyed, the desires that 26. are followed and a person being amazed with his own opinion. [Silsilah Al-hadeeth as-saheehah: Number: 1802: 4/ ] Abu Musa Al-Ashari reported: Whenever the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, would send his companions on a mission (da wah/ spreading Islam), he would say, Give glad tidings, and do not scare people away (from Islam); Make things easy (concerning religious matters), and do not make things difficult. (Abu Dawud) 27. The strong believer is better and dearer to God than the weaker believer. In all that is good be eager for what benefits you, seek help in God, and be not too weak to do so. (Muslim) 28. Ibn Abbas reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, Teach others, make things easy and do not make things difficult; and when one of you is angry, he should remain silent. (Ahmad, Number 2137, authentic) Page 15

29. A believer is not bitten twice from the same hole (Bukhari, Muslim) 30. The Prophet said, "Allah will say to that person of the (Hell) Fire who will receive the least punishment, 'If you had everything on the earth, would you give it as a ransom to free yourself (i.e. save yourself from this Fire)?' He will say, 'Yes.' Then Allah will say, 'While you were in the backbone of Adam, I asked you much less than this, i.e. not to worship others besides Me, but you insisted on worshipping others besides Me.' " 31. (Bukhari) Salman reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, Nothing repels the divine decree except supplication; and nothing increases life span except righteousness. (Tirmidhi) 32. Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: "If you put your trust in Allah in the true sense, He will grant your provision as He grants to the birds, who go out in the morning hungry and come back full." (Ahmad, Ibn Maajah and al-tirmidhi). 33. Verily, the hearts of the children of Adam, all of them, are between the two fingers of the Most Merciful as one heart; He directs them wherever He wills. Then he (the Prophet, peace be upon him) said, O Allah, the Turner of the hearts, turn our hearts into Your obedience. (Sahih Muslim) Page 16

34. O people, beware of exaggeration in religion for those who came before you were only destroyed because of exaggeration in religion. (Ibn Majah) 35. Abu Huraira reported: A bedouin Arab man entered the Mosque of Nabawi, while the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sitting. He prayed and when finished he said, O Allah, have mercy on me and Muhammad and no one else The Prophet (peace be upon him) turned to him and said, You have restricted something that is vast. It was not long before he was urinating in the mosque, so the people rushed to him, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, Pour a bucket or a tumbler of water over it. Then he said, You have been sent to make things easy, and you were not sent to make things difficult. (Tirmidhi) Page 17

Page 18

1. Narrated by Adi bin Hatim heard the Prophet (Peace be upon him) saying : Save yourself from Hellfire even by giving half of a date-fruit in charity. (Bukhari) Narrated Abu Huraira, The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "The one who looks after a widow or a poor person is like a Mujahid (warrior) who fights for Allah's Cause (jihad), or like him who performs prayers all the night and fasts all the day." (Bukhari) The most pleasing to Allah of all deeds is that which is done continuously, though it may be small. (Bukhari and Muslim) 4. Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, Once a man suffered from thirst while he was walking on a journey. When he found a well, he climbed down into it and drank from it; then he came out and saw a dog lolling its tongue from thirst and licking the ground. The man said: this dog has suffered thirst just as I have suffered from it. Hence he climbed down into the well, filled his shoe with water, and caught it in his mouth as he climbed up; then he gave the dog a drink. Allah appreciated this deed and so He forgave him. They (companions) said, O Messenger of Allah, is there a reward for charity even for the animals? He said, In every living being, there is a reward for charity. (Sahih Muslim) Page 19

5. Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "If any Muslim plants any plant then a human being or an animal eats from it, he will be rewarded as if he had given that much in charity." (Bukhari) 6. When a woman gives in charity some of the foodstuff (which she has in her house) without spoiling it, she will receive the reward for what she has spent, and her husband will receive the reward because of his earning, and the storekeeper will also have a reward similar to it. The reward of one will not decrease the reward of the others. " (Bukhari) Narrated by Aisha, Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: 7. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Whoever initiates a good practice in Islam and is emulated by others in doing so will get the reward of it and the reward of all those who act upon it without their rewards being diminished in any respect. And whosoever initiates an evil practice in Islam and is emulated by others will bear the sin of it and the sin of all those who act on it without their burden being diminished in the least. (Sahih Muslim) 8. I and the one who takes responsibility of an orphan, whether his own kin or of others, will be in paradise this close, and he (Prophet, pbuh) pointed his forefinger and the middle finger with a slight space between them. (Bukhari) Page 20

9. And whoever guides others towards good is equal to the doer of good. (Tirmidhi) Every act of goodness is a charity (Sahih Muslim) Never underestimate any good deed, even if it s just meeting your brother with a cheerful face (Muslim) Reported from Abu Sa id al-khudri that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: Whoever feeds a hungry believer will be fed by Allah on the Day of Judgement from the fruits of Paradise, and whoever quenches his thirst will have his thirst quenched from the Sealed Nectar, and whoever clothes him will be clothed from the green silk of Paradise. (Tirmidhi) 13. "O people! Spread the greeting of peace, feed (the poor and needy), behave kindly to your relatives, offer prayer when others are asleep, and (thus) enter Paradise in peace." (Tirmidhi) 14. Abu Hurairah narrated that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: You spent one Dinar for jihad, one Dinar to liberate a slave, one Dinar to a poor person, and one Dinar to support your family. The most rewarded Dinar is the one that you spent to provide your family. (Muslim) Page 21

15. "Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward equal to that of the fasting person, without any reduction in his reward." [Ahmad and An-Nasaa i] The believer s shade in the day of judgment will be his charity (Tirmidhi) Abu Huraira reported: A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he complained about the hardness of his heart. The Messenger of Allah told him, If you intend to soften your heart, then feed the poor and pat the head of the orphan. (Ahmad) 18. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Every Muslim has to give charity." The people then asked: "If someone has nothing to give, what should he do?" The Prophet replied: "He should work with his hands and benefit himself and also give in charity (from what he earns)." The people further asked: "If he cannot find even that?" He replied: "He should help the needy who appeal for help." Then the people asked: "If he cannot do (even) that?" The Prophet said finally: "Then he should perform good deeds and keep away from evil deeds, and that will be regarded as charitable deeds." (Bukhari) Page 22

Page 23

1. 2. All mankind is from Adam and Eve. No Arab has superiority over non-arab, nor non-arab has superiority over Arab. No white has superiority over black, nor black has superiority over white. Except in piety and faith. (Last sermon of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) (Bukhari) Abu Musa Al-Ashari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, You will never have faith until you love each other. Shall I tell you what will make you love each other? They said, Of course, O Messenger of Allah. He said, Spread peace between yourselves. By The One in whose hand is my soul, you shall not enter Paradise until you are compassionate. They said, O Messenger of Allah, all of us are compassionate. He said, Verily, it is not compassion between yourselves, but rather it is compassion in general; it is compassion in general. 3. [Al-Mustadrak ala as-saheehain, Number 7391, authentic] Abu Darda' report that our Holy Prophet has said, "One who defends the honour of his brother, Allah keeps the fire of hell away from his face on the Day of Judgment. (Tirmidhi) Page 24

4. "If a Muslim is being insulted and degraded and his honour besmirched somewhere and another Muslim abandon him helpless, Allah would abandon the latter helpless on occasions when he would need help. And if any Muslim helps him in when he (his brother) is insulted and degraded, Allah shall help him when he would need help" (Abu Dawud) 5. Reported by Wa silah ibn Al-Asqa a, Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said When you see the misfortune of your brother, do not rejoice, for God may save him and afflict you with the same misfortune (Bukhari) 6. Narrated 'Abdullah bin Umar: Rasulullah (peace be upon him) said, "A Muslim is a brother of another Muslim, so he should not oppress him, nor should he hand him over to an oppressor. Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; Whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection, And whoever screened a Muslim (disgrace/fault), Allah will screen him (his fault/disgrace) on the Day of Resurrection. " (Bukhari) Page 25

7. Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, None of you has faith until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself. [Bukhari] Imam An-Nawawi writes regarding this Prophetic saying that it is better to interpret this as brotherhood in general, such that it includes the disbeliever and the Muslim. So he should love for his brother, the disbeliever, what he loves for himself which is his entering Islam, just as he should love for his brother Muslim that he remains in Islam. For this reason, it is recommended to supplicate for the disbeliever to be guided. (Sharh Arba een An-Nawawi) The best of the muslims is he from whose hand and tongue other muslims are safe (Muslim) "Beware! Whoever is cruel and hard on a non-muslim minority (dhimmi), or curtails their rights, or burdens them in more than they can bear, or takes anything from them against their free will; I (Prophet Muhammad) will complain against the person on the Day of Judgment." (Abu Dawud) 10. Exchange gifts between yourselves, for it will spread love between you. (Bukhari) 11. Whoever defames a dhimmi (non-muslim minority), he will be punished with whips of fire on the Day of Resurrection. [At-Tabarani, Al-Mu jam Al-Kabeer, Number 17637, Hasan] Page 26

12. No racism in Islam : Abu Umamah reported: Abu Dharr reproached Bilal about his mother, saying, O son of a black woman! So Bilal went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he told him what Abu Dharr said. The Prophet became angry and then Abu Dharr came although he was unaware of what Bilal told him. The Prophet turned away from him and Abu Dharr asked, O Messenger of Allah, have you turned away (from me) because of something you have been told (Divine revelation)? The Prophet said, Have you reproached Bilal about his mother? then he continued, By the one who revealed the Book (Qur an) to Muhammad, none is more superior over another except by righteous deeds. You have none but an insignificant amount. (Al-Bayhaqi, Shu b Al-Iman, Number 4760, authentic) 13. There is no muslim pray for his brother behind his back, except the angels will say (Ameen) you will get the same (Sahih Muslim) 14. Whoever walks with his brother regarding a need until he secures it for him, then Allah the Exalted will make his footing firm across the bridge on the day (of judgment) when the footings are shaken. (Tabarani, hasan) Page 27

15. There are no two men who love each other except that the more virtuous of the two is the one who has the strongest love for his companion (Bukhari) 16. He is not a liar who reconciles people by saying something good or inventing something good (Tirmidhi) 17. A funeral passed in front of Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and he stood up. When he was told that it was the coffin of a Jew, he said is it not a human soul? he said, whenever you see a funeral procession, you should stand up (Bukhari) 18. Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: " Do not be envious of one another; do not artificially inflate prices against one another; do not hate one another; do not shun one another; do not undercut one another in business transactions; and be as fellow-brothers and servants of Allah. A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He neither oppresses him nor humiliates him nor looks down upon him. Piety is here - and Prophet (pbuh) pointed to his chest three times. It is evil enough for a Muslim to hold his brother Muslim in contempt. All things of a Muslim are inviolable for another Muslim: his blood, his property and his honour." (Muslim) Page 28

19. "He who wrongs a Jew or a Christian will have myself as his accuser on the Day of Judgment." (Bukhari) 20. Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, was told, O Messenger of Allah, please pray against the idolaters! So he replied, Verily, I was not sent to invoke curses, but rather I was only sent as a mercy. (Sahih Muslim) Courtesy to : dailyhadithonline.com Page 29

Fasting in Ramadan. I have certainly vowed to the Most Merciful abstention (ṣawm). [Sūrah Maryam, 19:26]

Fasting in Ramadan. I have certainly vowed to the Most Merciful abstention (ṣawm). [Sūrah Maryam, 19:26] What is Fasting? The word (ṣiyām) or (ṣawm) linguistically means to abstain or stop doing something. An example of this is the statement of Allah: I have certainly vowed to the Most Merciful abstention
