1 Grade 3 Tafseer Prepared by Aboo Shaybah This material was prepared for the grade 3 girls class I taught in term 3 of the school year at Nur-ul-Huda Academy. It covers Soorah at-teen until Soorah an-naas in reverse order, beginning from an- Naas and the content was adapted from the book Zubdah at-tafseer, a summary of Fath al-qadeer by ash- Shawkaanee. There were also three review tests over the term and they have been included in this file at their appropriate points.

So, al-ilaah is a specific name which applies only to Allaah and no one else shares it with Him. 4) Al-Waswaas is one who whispers, and here it refers to shaytaan. When Allaah is mentioned the shaytaan withdraws and shrinks away. But when Allaah is not mentioned the shaytaan is delighted and he carries on whispering. 5) The whispers in the chests means calling a person to obey him using silent speech which is aimed at the heart. 6) After saying all of this, Allaah explained that those who whisper are of two types: the jinn and the human. The shaytaan among the jinn whisper into the chests of men as was already discussed. The shaytaan among humans also whispers into the chests of humans by presenting himself and approaching as though he is a sincere, caring advisor. Thereby, his statements which he makes as advice are really the evil whisperings which have settled into his heart. There is no human who comes into existence except that there are whispers aimed at his heart. Whenever he remembers or mentions Allah, the whispers withdraw, and whenever he isn t paying attention to the guidance of Allaah, the whispers take place.

It could also mean everything Allaah has created which splits by His permission, such as grains, seeds, cells in human development, and so on. What is meant here is to show that the one who is able to remove the deep darkness from this entire world is also completely able by Himself to take away whatever you might worry about or fear as long as you seek refuge and protection with Him. 2) This is seeking refuge in Allaah from every possible evil thing in existence. 3) This is seeking refuge in Allaah from the night as it approaches. Some of the reasons one would seek refuge in Allaah from the night include the fact that predatory animals and vermin come out at night to hunt and prey upon others. Also evil people often come out at night to set out causing havoc and corruption. 4) This is seeking refuge in Allaah from those who blow in knots when using them for witchcraft, black magic and things of that nature all of which put a person out of Islaam. 5) Hasad is when a person wishes that a blessing someone else has is removed from them. The person who wishes this for someone else is called a haasid.

This soorah was then revealed, as if to say to them: you asked for an explanation of His lineage. Well, he is one without having any equal, or partner. 2) As-Samad is one turned to for all needs. He is all-capable on his own to bring them about. He is the Supreme Master whose rule is complete and perfect; the Most Magnificent whose splendor is complete and perfect; the Most Patient whose forbearance is complete and perfect; the Most Rich whose richness is perfect and complete and He stands in need of nothing; the Almighty whose might is complete and perfect; the All-Knowing whose knowledge is complete and perfect; the All-Wise whose wisdom is complete and perfect. He is Allaah, the One who has no imperfection in any way and this is a description that no one and nothing else deserves. 3) No offspring come from Him, and He did not come forth from anything either. Allaah is not of a similar nature to anything whatsoever. Allaah has always existed and He will continue to exist eternally. It is not right to say that Allaah did not exist at a certain time whether in the past or the future. The one who is born (mawlood) was non-existent prior to his birth, but this can never apply to Allaah who is the Creator of all things. Therefore, Allaah has no parent. Also, the mushrikeen amongst the Arabs used to say that the angels are the daughters of Allaah. The Jews (yahood)used to say that Uzayr is the son of Allaah. The Christians (nasaaraa) said that the Eesaa is the son of Allaah. However, Allaah proved all their claims false by saying that he does not have any offspring nor was He born. 4) There is nothing equal to Him, nothing similar to Him, and nothing sharing any of the qualities of perfection with Him.

He made a supplication (du aa) against the Prophet (r), and this soorah responds to him. It means may his two hands be destroyed, lost and doomed to failure. The word tabba at the end of the verse means he himself. In other words, may the du aa he made be against his own self. 2) The wealth which he gathered, the profit he earned, and the status he had would not be able to protect him from the destruction and punishment that Allaah would send upon him. 3) He would be punished by his skin being burned in the blazing fire which is continuously fed and keeps burning. This refers to the fire of Jahannam. 4) His wife is Umm Jameel bint Harb, the sister of Aboo Sufyaan. She will also blaze in the fire because she used to carry thorns and harmful objects casting them about during the nights along the pathway of the Prophet (r). 5) Masad refers to the fibers which are twisted together to make ropes. She had an extravagant necklace made of jewels and she swore by al-laat and al-uzzaa, that she would surely spend it all in hostility towards Muhammad (r). As a result, on the day of judgement that rope will be placed upon her neck in place of her necklace.

An-nasr is assistance and support by which enemies are defeated and overcome. Al-Fath is conquering the dwellings and territories of the enemies, and the opening of their hearts to accepting the truth. 2) The crowds were masses upon masses. Indeed, when the messenger of Allaah (r) conquered Makkah the Arabs said that since Muhammad has certainly triumphed over the inhabitants of the sacred area (haram), and Allaah has protected and granted them safety from the people of the elephant, then he must be upon the truth and you will have no power against him. Consequently, large numbers and huge groups accepted Islaam, while before it had only been one by one or pairs coming at a time. Eventually, it reached the point that entire tribes and all their families embraced Islaam. 3) This verse joins between glorification (tasbeeh) and praise (tahmeed) of Allaah. The glorification comes from the incredible things that Allaah has made easy and also things which had never even crossed the mind of a single person. The praise is for Allaah s wondrous act and tremendous favour by granting victory and conquest of Makkah and the people entering Islaam in multitudes. The next part of the verse talks about seeking forgiveness and pardon for your sin out of humility to Allaah and out of the deficiency in your deeds. Allaah most certainly accepts the repentance of those who repent to Him and has mercy upon them.

Al-Kaafiroon are those who disbelieve in the oneness and uniqueness (tawheed) of Allaah, as well as His angels, books, messengers, the day of judgement, the divine decree (qadar), the pillars of Islaam, and so on. 2) Allaah commanded his Messenger (r) to say to them, I do not worship what you worship, meaning I will not do what you are asking of me which is to worship the idols you worship. Specifically, I will not do so right now. 3) Meaning that you (al-kaafiroon) will not be truly worshipping Allaah, whom I worship, as long as you remain in the kufr and shirk that you presently commit. 4) This means at any future time in my life, I will not worship any of the false gods whom you worship. 5) You will not be truly worshipping Allaah in the future as long as you remain in your kufr and worship of idols. Certainly, the worship of Allaah coming from a kaafir and a mushrik is rejected and given no consideration at all. These verses emphasize the refusal towards the eager desire of the kuffaar for the Messenger of Allaah (r) to answer them by worshipping their idols which they asked of him. 6) If you are pleased with your religion, then I am also pleased with mine. That religion of yours in which you set up partners with Allaah is a religion for you and I cannot tolerate it. At the same time, my religion of tawheed is for me and it has no room for you if you remain making shirk.

Then comes the command to sacrifice only to Allaah because some of the people used to pray and sacrifice to other than Allaah. Therefore, Allaah commanded His Prophet (r) to direct his prayer and sacrifice to Allaah alone and to no one else. 3) The one who angers the Prophet (r) is the one whose mention will not remain after his death. The word abtar in the verse means that he will be cut off from every good thing both in this world and the hereafter. Literally, the abtar man is one who does have not any sons. When one of the sons of the Messenger of Allaah (r) died, one of the mushrikoon said, He (Muhammad r) is abtar. Then this soorah was revealed.

It is also narrated in a hadeeth that wayl is a valley in hell that is so hot and the fire there is so intense that the rest of hell itself seeks refuge from it. 5) Saahoon basically means not taking proper care of them and not giving them any attention. Even when they pray they do not hope for any reward, and they do not fear any type of punishment is they leave off their prayers. They don t pay any attention to the prayers even if it is no longer time to pray them. 6) They pray and perform their deeds to be seen by others, and so the people will praise them. 7) Al-Maa oon is a word for those things which people lend to each other like a bucket, axe, cooking pot, and things which they don t usually withhold like water, sugar, salt and so on. It could also refer to the zakaah and the verse would be talking about those who don t pay the zakaah on their property. Prayer (salaah) is something done openly so they do it for others to see. However, they withhold the Zakaah since it is something done privately and not seen by others.

The other travel was to Shaam during the summer, since it was a cold land. The Quraysh made their living by trade and commerce, and if it was not for these two trips, it would not have been possible for them to survive. Furthermore, if they had no safety, they would not have been able to do as they pleased. Their safety came about from the fact that they lived around the house of Allaah. The basic meaning of the verse is that Allaah made the two journeys routine and easy for them. Therefore, as a result of that, they must make their worship for Allaah alone, thanking Him and praising him only. 3) He let them know the He is the Rabb of this house because they used to have idols and statues which they worshipped there. However, Allaah differentiated himself from those things. Also, the Quraysh had more prestige than the other tribes by being near to that house. 4) Allaah gave them food as a result of their two travels and rescued them from the extreme state of hunger in which they had been before. In addition, Allaah saved them from fear and gave them security. At the time, some of the Arabs would capture others and they caused harm to each other. However, Quraysh were saved from that because of the sanctified land in which they dwelled. They were also protected from the fear of the army of Abrahah and the elephants.

This is because of the many lessons that can be learned from the passage of time, such as the changing of night and day in a precise way, the darkness and light taking turns with one coming after the other, and so on. Also, there are tremendous lessons that a person learns as time passes and they grow older. These signs are a clear indication of Allaah, the one who makes all of this and allows it to happen. They are also clear signs of His tawheed (the fact that He is one and unique), since no one else can do any of that. 2) Al-Khusr is the damaging loss, and losing the most valuable possessions. 3) Those who save themselves from such a loss have four qualities: they have eemaan, they do good deeds, they advise each other to the truth, and they advise each other upon patience. They implement those things which deserve most attention, especially having eemaan in Allaah, having knowledge of tawheed and carrying out whatever Allaah has commanded and staying away from what Allaah has forbidden. Advising one another upon as-sabr has a few parts. Patience in staying away from disobedience to Allaah; patience in carrying out the obligations of the religion; and patient composure during those events and calamities which might happen to us and cause us pain.

29 1) This verse refers to the Jews and Christians as well as the mushrikoon of the Arabs who worshipped idols and statues. Munfakkeen means they vary and they are different in their kufr and they will not desist from it until the clear evidence (bayyinah) comes. The bayyinah is Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and his message. He clarified their ignorance to them, explained how they had gone astray, and he called them to eemaan. 2) Protected and guarded from distortion and confusion. It is truly the speech of Allaah. 3) The verses and rulings that are written in it are from Allaah. Qayyimah means the strong and straight path without any straying from the truth. The entire book and the laws in it contain wisdom, guidance and goodness. Whoever follows it will be upon the true and straight path of Allaah s religion. 4) Their splitting and differing was not because of some doubt they may have had. Rather, it took place after the truth had been made clear and the correct way was shown to them. Later on, Allaah then sent Muhammad (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), and some of them accepted him and his message while others did not. Before that, it was obligatory for them to follow a single path in terms of following the religion of Allaah and following the messenger who Allaah sent in order to confirm what they already had. 5) Meaning to constantly maintain the worship of Allaah, all the while making it sincerely for Him and not directing it to anyone else. The word hunafaa means those who lean away from all other religions and towards the deen of Islaam. When Allaah mentions establishing the salaah, it means they perform the prayer the way Allaah wants it done and at its proper times. The meaning of giving the zakaah, is for it to be done at its due time and with the full amount. What they were commanded with is the deen which is the straight path, and it is not proper to be separated from it. 6) They are in the worst circumstances of all creatures because they wrongfully left the truth. 7,8) They are in the best of circumstances. Their reward is in return for the eemaan they had and their good deeds. They will be given jannah and they will not be taken out from it, nor will they travel from it, nor will they die.

So how could Aboo Jahl be so bold as to do what he did? 15) This is a warning for him that if he does not stop and pay attention to it, he will most certainly be taken by the front of his head and dragged into the fire by it. Naasiyah is the hair at the front of the head. 16) The person being spoken about here is described as dishonest, in error, and having no concern at all because of his committing so many sins. 17) A naadee is the gathering in which a group of people sit or assemble. It was said that Aboo Jahl bragged to the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), about his gathering. Aboo Jahl basically said that he had the largest gathering in the valley, so how could Muhammad possibly threaten him. Following that, these verses were revealed. 18) Severe and stern angels to take him and throw him into the blazing fire. 19) Do not obey him in what he calls you to, such as leaving the salaah.
