JOIN TAHIRMAGAZINE RECRUITING ATFAL AND KHUDDAM Announcement from Majlis Atfalul Ahmadiyya Tarbiyyat Department Based on instructions given by Huzoor Aqdas (May Allah be his Helper) the Atfal Tarbiyyat department are collecting data from individual Atfal. Printed colour copies of Atfal data sheets have been posted to all regions. Data should be entered throughout the month by each tifl. At the end of the month parents should sign-off the sheet by completing the appropriate section and ensure forms are returned to the local Nazim. Local Nazimeen are required to transfer monthly figures into a regional Google sheet (to which they already have access). This will enable the central Atfal team to monitor progress and facilitate improvements as well as to create analytical reports for submission to Huzoor Aqdas (May Allah be his Helper). Overall, the process will serve as a reminder to Atfal to carry out their daily obligations while allowing parents to review progress. To encourage participation, quarterly awards will be offered to The Best Tifl in every region; it is highly recommended that incentives are also introduced at a local level. Majlis Atfalul Ahmadiyya requests your prayers and support in ensuring this task is paid the required attention. The progress sheet can be obtained from the Atfal website. Meet the team! 4 01 HOW WAS THE HOLY QURAN REVEALED? إ ا ح ز ل ا الذ ك و إ ا ل ه ل ح اف ظ و VERILY, WE OURSELVES HAVE SENT DOWN THIS EXHORTATION, AND MOST SURELY WE WILL BE ITS GUARDIAN. The Holy Qur an is a book that is perfect, full of wisdom and a source of guidance regarding all aspects of life. A book which carries so much wisdom and beauty needs someone that is of perfection to fully be able to convey its message to all people. Allah the Almighty for this very reason chose and nurtured the Holy Prophet Muhammad from the very beginning. The ﷺ Holy Prophet ﷺ was known as Sadiq (truthful) and Ameen (trustworthy) to everyone that had heard of him. An incident that took place whilst he was a young boy was that while playing with his friends, the other children saw a man walk towards him, those children then saw how that man opened his chest, took out his heart, cleaned it and put it back in his chest. The children ran away to their respective parents and told them of what had just happened. This in actuality was a vision that was seen by the Holy Prophet ﷺ and shared by other children and meant that his heart was purified from On High. The revelation of the Holy Qur an began when the Holy Prophet Muhammad reached the age of 40. He was in ﷺ complete solitude in the cave of Hira when he received the first revelation from Allah the Almighty through the angel Gabriel in Ramadhan of the words Iqrah which means read. The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was in a state of awe and could only answer that he was illiterate and therefore could not read. To which he again was told to read by the Angel after he tightly pressed him against himself, to read in the name of the Lord who created, created man from a clot of blood (this was in actuality the very first verses of revelation). After this the Holy Prophet ﷺ was left in a deep state of anxiety and restlessness. When he told his wife Hazrat Khadija ra she reassured him and comforted him that there was nothing to fear as Allah the Almighty had chosen him. The revelation of the Holy Quran spanned for 23 years, starting and ending in the holy month of Ramadhan. As the Holy Qur an was revealed in stages and not at once, it was recorded through different methods as well. The primary method of recording revelations was through memorisation where the companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ used to sit by him and repeat whenever a verse was revealed until they had completely memorised it. During that period, some Muslims had also started writing the revelations down on a piece of camel skin. The Holy Qur an you read is the very same that was revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad.ﷺ It is the only book that can claim not to have been changed as Allah himself said that he is its guardian parts surahs Verily the one who recites the Qur an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward. (Hadith) This is a perfect book, there is no doubt in it. Surah Al-Baqarah verse 3 Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward, and this reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that 'Alif, Laam, Meem' (a combination of letters frequently mentioned in the Holy Quran) is a letter, rather I am saying that Alif is a letter, Laam is a letter and Meem is a letter. (Hadith) 02

EARLY ISLAMIC HISTORY How was the Holy Quran compiled into book form? THE PROMISED MESSIAH S LOVE FOR THE HOLY QURAN IN 3 INCIDENTS The Holy Quran was revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ over a period of 23 years in which hundreds upon hundreds of verses were revealed. The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had entrusted the task of recording the revelations to his chosen companions. As the verses were revealed his companions would memorise them or write them down on materials that were available then. This practice continued until the entire Holy Quran was revealed. At the time of The Holy Prophet Muhammad s ﷺ, demiseﷺ the number of people who had memorised the entire Qur an exceeded one hundred thousand. The process of new believers accepting Islam continued to grow as did the process of memorising the entire Qur an. During the time of Hazrat Abu Bakr a commission was setup to begin compiling the Holy Qur an into book form. The commission assembled the scribes who were appointed by The Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for writing the revelations and compiled the entire Holy Qur an into one volume. The accuracy of the wording of this volume was checked by the The Holy Prophet Muhammad s companionsﷺ who had memorised the entire Holy Qur an by heart as well as from the written scripts. This one volume compilation was finished within two years after the demise of the Holy Prophet.ﷺ The third Khalifah, Hazrat Uthman instructed the same commission to prepare seven additional copies of the Holy Qur an and these seven copies were distributed throughout the Muslim empire. The Bible, as we know it today, is not exactly the same as it was revealed and the same goes for other Holy books except the Holy Qur an. Other Holy books have undergone many revisions, and modifications for many words and phrases found in the older versions have been changed in subsequent revisions. However, it is proven that the Holy Quran has been unchanged and is exactly the same as it was revealed to the Holy.ﷺ Prophet Muhammad This safeguarding is something that Allah the Almighty promised as He states: Verily, We Ourselves have sent down this Exhortation, and most surely We will be its Guardian, (Al-Hijr, 15:10) This verse of the Holy Qur an promises that its text has been safe-guarded in its original form by a divine plan for all times to come, and we see this with our own eyes It is said that a non-ahmadi tax-collector, Munshi Adbul Wahid from Patiala, was a frequent visitor to Qadian to see Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Murtaza Sahib, the father of the Promised Messiah. He knew the Promised Messiah from an early age. He testified that when the Promised Messiah was about the age of 14 or 15 years, he spent almost his entire day reading the Holy Qur an and writing notes on it in the margins. The father of the Promised Messiah commented that he was not concerned about anything else and spent his day reading the Holy Qur an in the Mosque. Once, the Promised Messiah was travelling in a Palanquin from Qadian to Batala. The journey took about five hours. Just as he left Qadian, the Promised Messiah opened his pocket edition of the Holy Qur an and started reading the first Chapter, Surah Al-Fatiha and for five hours he was completely absorbed in the study of this short Chapter as if it was a vast deep ocean in which he was diving to great depths in search of the pearls of love and mercy of his eternal beloved- the Holy Qur an. Hazrat Dr. Mir Mohammad Ismail Sahib narrates that on the day when the Ambassador from Rome was visiting Qadian; after Maghrib prayer, when Huzoor was sitting on a seat, he felt pressure in his head so he lay down on a mat on the floor. The Companions moved in to press his head but Huzoor soon stopped them and when most of them had left, he requested Maulvi Adbul Karim Sahib to recite some portion of the Holy Qur an. Maulvi Sahib complied and continued to recite in a melodious voice until Huzoor said that he felt better

KHILAFAT Sayings and incidents of our beloved Khulafah An extract from Abid Khan sahib s diary From Huzoor s aba tour of Germany 2017 The next morning, 11 April 2017, the Qafila departed from the Bercher hotel at Waldshut- Tiengen at 10.50am to travel to the city of Augsburg where the Baitul Naseer Mosque was to be inaugurated later in the day. As Huzoor was about to enter his car, Amir Sahib Germany informed him that a local German lady had expressed a desire to meet Huzoor. Thus, Huzoor walked towards the lady, who was visibly emotional. The entire scene for the next minute or two was something that will live long in the memory. The German lady, whose name was Sophia, had been receiving medical treatment at a facility nearby and had noticed the Qafila cars parked at the hotel. She had asked a Khadim on-duty for information about why there were so many cars and so he told her about the Jamaat and gave her a leaflet in which there was a photo of Huzoor. He told her that Ahmadis believed that the Khalifa was divinely chosen and upon hearing this tears began to flow from her eyes. Upon hearing all of this, Ms. Sophia asked if it would be possible for her to meet Huzoor and to seek his blessings. As she met Huzoor, everyone could see that she was very overwhelmed and was crying constantly. With tears flowing from her eyes, she addressed Huzoor and said: Having met you I feel as though I have gained the entire world. This is the most precious moment of my life. In response, Huzoor said: Thank you. May Allah bless you. It was a very emotional scene, whereby at a time when so many Western people view Muslims with fear and trepidation, here was a lady who, despite having no previous knowledge of our Jamaat, had become overwhelmed with emotion as she met Khalifatul Masih. Later, the Khadim who had answered her questions, informed me that she had requested to kneel on the ground when meeting Huzoor and so had explained that Muslims believed only in bowing down on the ground before God Almighty. Huzoor s tour of Germany April 2017 Part 1, A Personal Account, By Abid Khan, pages Importance of Khilafat explained by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV The Muslims who should have been united and be in harmony, are divided in countless sects and divisions. It is not only in religious field but in politics too. When there is schism, they can achieve nothing in the world, which a united and harmonious people can do. By discord and disharmony the power of the Muslim world has not only disintegrated, but also they are using this broken strength against one another. When such are the conditions, the aggregate will be below zero. The groups may be very powerful, but if they will oppose and counteract each other in minor and major issues and remain busy in fighting, their power will be scattered and strength broken. This is happening in every Muslim country. Unfortunately it is being named as Jihad. What will they gain from all this? What resources will remain for their own nation building, defense of Islam or fighting the enemy? Therefore, it is incumbent that Muslims should unite on the hand of One Imam. There should be one Imam of the Muslims of the whole world. But without Khilafat, it is just impossible. Khilafat is the successor after the prophet in the form of a person who is representing the deceased prophet and Khalifa is the vicegerent and his subordinate. He is the central authority. This is the basic principle of Khilafat. Muslims do understand its need as well as importance. This need was felt after the sad demise of the Holy Prophet ﷺ also. In Islam this is quite clear like broad daylight and is a part of Islamic teaching that without unity and harmony you cannot rightly work on the teachings of Islam. When you go to the mosque for Namaz five times a day, there must be an Imam. Standing behind an Imam is a demonstration of unity among people. That is why the Holy Quran especially emphasizes the need of congregational prayer. Imam is given so much importance that if the Imam falters, the entire congregation must follow his mistake even if they know that a mistake has been committed. What better instance can be presented for the need of an Imam and unity in his following? If Imam is mandatory in a small mosque, then how can the whole of Muslims Ummah survive without an Imam. As far as the Ummah is concerned, there is commandment in the Holy Quran to turn their faces towards Qiblah. For the Muslims throughout the world, there is one and only one Qiblah. You may go anywhere in the world, the Qiblah remains the same. This is a pointer that it is incumbent for the Muslim Ummah that they should be united under one Imam. Had this not been the sole purpose, there would have been no Khilafat at all because the spiritual condition of Muslims in the days of the Holy Prophet was a thousand times better than the Muslims of today. If they need to follow an Imam, how can we live without an Imam today when the condition of Muslims is crying for it. This is the answer why Khilafat is needed. 7 HEALTH & SPORTS the habit of physical excercise Exam Results We inculcate the habit of physical exercise so that we can be lithe and active, so that our limbs become strong and so that we gain courage. (Al-Fazl, 28 March 1939, p. 2) 07 Excursion, recreation and exercise are very important for good health. It is certainly no bar to old age either. It is proven that the Holy Prophet ﷺ participated in a race with Hazrat Aisha ra. The Promised Messiah too raced against a Sikh for the honour of Islam and beat him to lower his pride. Similarly his exercising with weights is also well known. Hazrat Musleh Maud used to travel out of Qadian for hunting, and once, he participated in a race with members of his household on the banks of River Bias. If one acts on these wise pieces of advice, one can gain both outer and inner beauty. Hazrat Musleh Maud states, We inculcate the habit of physical exercise so that we can be lithe and active, so that our limbs become strong and so that we gain courage. (Al-Fazl, 28 March 1939, p. 2) The simple but hard-work driven life of the Holy Prophet ﷺ transmitted radiance on his face. On top of that, the Divine Light created an indescribable radiance that was unparalleled. The Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ would look at the full moon and at his face and used to testify that his face was brighter than the full moon. Sometimes they would use the sun as a metaphor but always accepted that his radiance was better than any other beauty. Hazrat Abu Huraira states that he never noticed anyone better that the Holy Prophet His face radiated like the sun, and he had.ﷺ never seen anyone walk faster than him. His gait seemed as if the whole world was swiftly folding under his feet and the companions used to continue to try and catch up with him. The Holy Prophet ﷺ used to surpass all people in courage, strength and bravery in times of danger. Hazrat Anas quotes that the Holy Prophet ﷺ was the best of mankind and he was the most generous, brave and courageous. Achieving good results With the A-level results having just come out on Thursday 17th August many 18 year olds received great news, having graduated to the top universities, and on Thursday 24th August 16 year olds too recieved their GCSE results. An equally important exam is the 11 plus examination that secondary schools look for when enrolling students. Many have passed these exams and have realised the joy of receiving good results. Regardless of what results you recieve always make sure that you are firstly, motivated to strive towards excellence. Secondly, don t lose hope in yourself and most importantly keep praying to Allah the Almighty. In the Holy Qur an, (Surah Al-Najm 53:59), it states, Man will not get anything unless he works hard, this means that you will not achieve anything, including good results, unless you work hard for them. The Holy Prophet Muhammad said, No two things have ﷺ been combined better than knowledge and patience. The Holy Prophet s ﷺ task seemed impossible at the time, but he fulfilled his mission which led billions of people to accept his message. The Holy Prophet ﷺ worked tirelessly for the success of his mission and continued to pray to Allah the Almighty. This is a living example for us regarding how we too can become successful. There is a prayer for increase in knowledge in the Holy Qur an (20:115) My Lord, increase me in knowledge, this is vital to do before any exam. 08

at our guest house in Peace Village. When we arrived it is only fair to say we were in awe of the place. There was a beautiful open area where everyone was relaxing and talking around the mosque, Bait-ul-Islam. We had a 15 minute break at our guest house, Bait-ul-Ansar and then were back up to have a very relaxed dinner with Murabbi Sahib. He then took us to the Tahir Hall and showed us the whole complex with the middle floor used as a mission house and the third floor being Jamia. Earlier that day we were waiting around in Gatwick and now that we were here it was an almost unreal feeling; we were truly blessed to be here and at that moment I knew it, this was going to be a trip of a lifetime. Thursday 17th August MY AMAZING SIX DAYS IN canada Mirza Hashim Ahmad Gillingham, East Region Getting up and staying up after Fajr isn t an easy thing, especially when your bed is beckoning you back for another short rest but today was different! Today, I was going to Canada to represent Atfal-ul-Ahmadiyya UK at their National Ijtema. I got ready, put my 18-and-a-half-kilogram bag in the back of the car and set off for a 45 minute trip to the airport. As I walked into the airport, I met my group which consisted of 10 boys I had never met before and 11 our supervisor, Taalay Bhai. I was handed my football shirt and immediately felt part of a team. We managed to get through the whole check in system in about half an hour and we were ready to set off, only to find out our flight was delayed for about three hours. But we didn t let this dampen our spirits. This was a huge deal for us, flying to Canada to meet our Canadian brothers. Also, these 3 hours proved a valuable time as although all of us were from across England, we had never seen each other before, so this time allowed us to get to know and talk to each other; I could see from that moment it was clear that we would be very good friends. The flight was about seven hours & we were all happy and well as we stepped into Canada. Collecting our baggage and getting through security was surprisingly quick and we were out of the airport at around six o clock. It took about half an hour for us to arrive Waking up for Fajr is a blessing but waking up and being able to walk directly to the masjid was truly special. As the masjid was in the middle of Peace Village you could see people left, right and centre walking towards the masjid to read namaaz in the pleasant, warm air. It was a moment to hold on to and cherish; the highlight of each day for me! At around half past ten we set off on a trip to see two beautiful mosques. The first one was a school that was converted into a large mosque with an Ahmadi run elementary school going all the way up to fourth grade (and further in the near future, Inshallah). We had a very inspiring talk with Murrabi Sahib about the importance of Khilafat and how miracles occur if you hold close to the rope of Allah. Soon after we went to Bait-un-Noor mosque which was converted from a church. Following Zuhr prayers, we had a barbeque which was in a small gazebo outside and it would be an understatement to say that the food was terrific. The burgers and the chicken were fantastic, all the boys loved it!! Our next stop was Niagara Falls; whilst on the long drive we had a class in the car re-capping the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, mainly focusing on his early life. When we reached Niagara Falls we were taken back by the beautiful view and its sheer size. We went to the lake of Niagara and saw the view of Niagara above us which was truly amazing. Afterwards we went to a huge 2-storey arcade, with the first thing I looked for being the air-hockey game, it was a blast! To finish, we headed off to the best pizza places in Canada (Pizza Pizza). We ordered two large chicken pizzas and two veggies and within 45 minutes were finished and headed off to the guest house for a much-needed rest. Friday 19th August Breakfast is an important part of the day for many of us and we all needed a big breakfast especially for today as we were off to the opening day of the National Ijtema. National Amir Sahib, Canada started the proceedings, followed by food and then we went out onto the football pitch to get a bit of practice in before our friendly game against Montreal. The match was a heated affair that we ended up winning 5-3. After cooling down we then headed off towards the food hall for dinner and for Maghrib and Ishaa and finally back home for a long rest which we needed keeping in mind that the actual tournament started tomorrow Saturday 20th August Being from Britain (the home of football) means that you have a reputation of being great foot- 12

ball players which in turn meant that the pressure was on for us to deliver some good performances in front of the crowd; today we did put on a bit of a show for the Canadians. We played Eastern Brampton in our first game and won 3-0, thus we were through to the quarter finals against Muqami B. Muqami B were a very skilled and physical team so we really had to play with a lot of skill. The game ended as a one all draw with a beautifully struck goal from the halfway line by Hasaan and it came right to the wire with a penalty shoot-out (Muqami B ultimately loosing). After Ishaa prayers we drove back to Bait-ul-Ansar to rest and ready up for two huge games tomorrow. Sunday 21st August It s important for any team to watch the team they will play and so we watched the game against two regions called Calgary and GTA East. In the end Calgary won, mainly to one of their key players, who scored two fantastic curling free kicks. Our game was shortly after and so whilst we had a small warm up we already knew one thing, whatever we do don t give any free kicks away! Before kickoff we did Dua hoping that we win this game and by the grace of Allah we won by a wide margin of 5 goals, really putting on a great The tension was high as kick-off started as this team was the team to beat as they had won many years in a row and had two or three great academy players. We played a great game which ended up 3-3 so once again it was down to penalties... performance to go through to the finals. The tension was high as kick-off started as this team was the team to beat as they had won many years in a row and had two or three great academy players. We played a great game which ended up 3-3 so once again it was down to penalties and unfortunately, we lost 2-1 on penalties. We came off the pitch in the end though with people congratulating us for the great game and the captain of Muqami A said that that was the toughest game they played in the tournament. In the end, we all decided to get drinks and pizza to try and cheer us up. After Zuhr and Asr prayers the award ceremony took place and our supervisor Taley went to get all the medals. We were very thankful after Taley Bhai gave them to us and we then headed off back for a well needed rest and unwind after two days of intense football. However, what all of us did notice is the chemistry between all of us in the last game. In the very first friendly although we had won the game there was barely any passing and we didn t play our game. However, after two games in the quarter-finals we had become very good as a team and played the ball over the pitch passing and moving as if it had become second nature. It was truly amazing to see how quickly we changed and evolved as a team. Monday 21st August After a long sleep that lasted till 10 in the morning, we started to get ready for one of the most anticipated days of the trip; the CN tower. Once breakfast was finished, we all headed off to downtown Toronto for a truly fantastic day. We first headed off to a mall in downtown where shortly after we headed out of downtown and had lunch at Popeyes. Popeyes was by far one of the best things we had for lunch as the chicken was perfect and the chips were delicious. We all ate all the wings and the pieces and all shared the Cajun chips between all of us. After reading Namaaz all of us headed to the CN tower and the high-speed elevators were great. They took us up 343 metres in just 58 seconds. It was actually so fast that it made our ears pop. When we arrived at the top we had a look around the amazing view in front of us and had a look at the glass floor beneath us which is a bit frightening but also phenomenal. We rounded up this day by heading back to the guest house for Maghrib and Ishaa and for what we thought was the end of our day, However, at around half past 12 our drivers said to us that we should all go out for dessert. We were amazed and happy so they took us to get milkshakes, which was followed by them taking us to a Lamborghini showcase, a Ferrari showcase, a Maserati showcase and a dodge showcase. We finally headed off to the guest house to finish up this great day. Tuesday 22nd August Many of us will never get even close to being five foot below a huge shark but at Ripley s, they made it possible. After a delicious breakfast, we headed off to downtown Toronto, near CN tower again to see Ripley s aquarium. We were all very excited with our phones charged in preparation for some amazing photos. We headed in and we straight away came face to face with a colossal fish tank swarming with hundreds, if not thousands of fish. Soon after, we headed off to the first part of this aquarium viewing with some very interesting creatures, ranging from the tiniest anemones to the most gigantic eels. What makes Ripley s great was in the next area; we were in a tunnel with glass walls and a moving walkway. As we moved across this walkway, we saw sharks swimming past us on all sides and other huge fish swimming all around us. It was a great experience. Soon after we headed to the Humanity First office (it was huge!). On the bottom floor was a massive food bank area filled with food, toys and clothing. Upstairs there was a small prayer area and loads of meeting areas where the chairman graciously presented us with a presentation showing us all the hard and selfless work that all the sectors of Humanity First do, including disaster relief and water for life. To finish, we had refreshments and were all handed with a humanity first light up fidget spinner. Everybody there was very kind and nice to us and we were very thankful for it. Our final stop was MTA Canada where we met Marrubi Sahib and he took us through a huge tour of the Canadian studios. The studio was huge with Mac s all around us. They also gave us a few refreshments and we said Asalamoulaikum and Jazakamullah to all of them for the great trip. Wednesday 23rd August The last day is always the quickest and maybe that is true because we were all up and leaving the guest house at one in the afternoon. We had a small drive around to grab some lunch and before we knew it we were in Amir Sahib s office saying Jazakallah for helping arrange this wonderful trip as he handed us bags with small presents in. At 6 we were at the airport saying our final salaam s to our bus drivers but it wasn t till about half past 8 until we got through the whole of security, meaning that we had to race so we didn t miss our flight back home. By the grace of Allah, we made it with some time to spare and as we boarded we prepared for our return flight, doing Dua and reflecting on leaving our home for the last week. We arrived at 10 am in England and said goodbye to one another and began sharing stories of this life changing journey with our families. Throughout this trip I have had some great experiences, but what truly has made it an amazing trip is the brotherhood that has formed between us all. From being a handful of boys who had never seen each other to becoming one of the best group of friends is truly magnificent and I can only thank Allah for bestowing this glorious blessing upon us. Inshallah, I will see my team at upcoming Atfal events very soon. I am so thankful to Allah to be a part of Atfal-ul-Ahmadiyya; Allah has bestowed countless blessings on us

TARBIYYAT The Holy Prophet Muhammad stated: The best among ﷺ you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it to others this Hadith emphasises the need to read the Holy Quran and learn it and then to help others in reading and learning the Quran. However, to teach the Quran you must understand it. Therefore we must not only read the Arabic but also read the translation and commentary too. After reading the translation and commentary we should act upon the teaching of the Holy خ ی ر ک م م ت ع ل م ال ق ا و ع ل م ہ The best among you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it himself. Quran so that we can teach others the Quran through our actions. This point is vital to remember. Not only is it important to read the Holy Quran but also make its teachings a part of our daily lives, only then can we become true Muslims. [I call Allah to witness that the Holy Qur an is a rare pearl. Its outside is light and its inside is light and its above is light and its below is light and there is light in every word of it. The Promised Messiah How do I get closer to Allah the Almighty? Why does satan even exist? How does fasting make me a better Muslim? The reason why we were created was so that we could worship the One True God. Hence, our entire life is a journey that we undertake to get closer to God. How can one get closer to God? By contentiously praying to Him for guidance and by turning to God with pure intentions. When one seeks -with all his heart- to find God and makes sacrifices for His sake then God purifies that individual from sin and grants him His nearness. Whenever an individual is inclined to do something which wrong then that feeling of temptation is what we call being incited by Satan. The reason why this happens is so that an individual himself can struggle for the sake of God and cast aside all temptations and turn to God with a pure heart. This trial is something that everyone must go through in order to overcome Satan and become firm believers. Firstly, the reason why we fast is because it is an instruction of Allah the Almighty, so acting upon his instructions makes us better Muslims. Secondly, fasting has been described as a shield from sin. This means that when one is hungry and in a state that he is sacrificing his needs for the sake of God then this is a source of gaining the pleasure of Allah, hence it leads to an increase in faith. The Holy Quran is full of wisdom I was young and am now old and people can bear witness that I never concerned myself with worldly affairs and was always interested in matters of the faith. I have found the Word which is called the Qur an of the utmost holiness and full of spiritual wisdom. The Promised Messiah Send in your questions to: tahirmagazine@atfal.co.uk

FROM Establishing a living connection with Allah the Almighty THE REGIONS Send your submissions to tahirmagazine@atfal.co.uk Farhan Ruhan Clapham, Muqami Region As an Ahmadi boy your basic purpose should be to establish a relationship with Allah the Almighty, and for that Allah the Almighty has made it obligatory on all Muslims to offer 5 daily prayers. And that is why the Holy Prophet of Islam ﷺ has said that when a boy reaches the age of 7 make him aware of offering his prayers and importance of prayers. And at the age of 10 be stricter in implementing it and at the age of 12 you can only counsel him because that is the age where it is supposed that a child is now quite grown up. So you must all pay attention to this matter, regardless of how gentle the Holy Prophet ﷺ was, he was very much strict on a child if he is not offering prayer up to the age of 10. If you all develop the habit of offering your daily prayers from an early age then in later life this habit will stay with you for your lifetime, forever. According to the 5 pillars of Islam, after Kalima the second important thing and obligation is Namaz. Which should be offered regularly and for men in congregations. For boys after the age of 10 they should go to the mosque or to the salat centres for offering your obligatory prayers. Extract taken from the address delivered by Hazrat Amir-ul- Momineen Khalifatul Masih V aba, UK National Atfal Rally, April 2011 My name is Farhan Ahmed Ruhan. A few months ago there was a competition in my school called Maths Bee competition. By the grace of Allah Almighty I won this competition for school year 3 and was selected to represent my school for Maths Bee competition at the Wandsworth Borough level. Alhamdulillah, again I won the competition and well-represented my school. My report in KS1 was excellent. Few days after this win of Maths Bee Competition when I received my annual report for Year 3, I was astonished to see that I was awarded excellent in every subject from Maths to History to Geography. My class teacher commented in the annual report, Farhan is a fountain of knowledge. My teacher also admired my obedience, hardwork and punctuality which I believe is a result of my tarbiyyat as an Ahmadi boy. I always try to share my knowledge with others. It helps me to correct my mistakes as well as to learn from them. I am proud to be an obedient servant of Ahmadiyyat and Khilafat as a Waqf-e-Nau. Almost everyone in my school knows, I am a Muslim and I am an Ahmadi. As everyone knows this I think it is some sort of preaching by action. I also remember recently meeting Huzoor aba in a family Mulaqat and asking him for Dua for my studies and Huzoor aba very kindly prayed for me during Mulaqat. I know that everything I have achieved is due to the prayers of our beloved Huzoor aba. I humbly request everyone reading this to meet Huzoor aba more often and write to him for Dua. 13 Is it only limited to women? Or are men commanded to observe Purdah too? Tell the believing men to cast down their looks and guard their private parts; that is purer for them; surely Allah is Aware of what they do. And tell the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof. (24:31-32) This verse is self-explanatory, in this verse Allah the Almighty has commanded us to observe Purdah by casting down our looks and guarding our private parts. In fact, Allah has commanded men to observe Purdah first. It should be clear that the reason why Allah has commanded us to cast down our looks is because it is the eyes through which most evil thoughts enter the mind. Hence, we have been told to restrain looks. The Promised Messiah has also stressed on the importance of this matter and practiced great piety since childhood. In PURDAH - WHAT DOES IT MEAN? The Holy Quran has commanded women to do Purdah. However, it has also commanded men to lower their gaze whilst in the presence of women. Therefore, it becomes essential that one adopts modesty and keeps away from everything that the Holy Quran has forbidden. Huzoor aba in his Friday Sermon delivered on the 30th January 2004 stated: The meaning of restraining your looks is that you prevent yourself from looking at every such thing that has been forbidden by Allah. Huzoor aba stated that this instruction is for men, in the first instance if acted upon, a lot of evils would vanish automatically. Purdah isn t just constrained down to looks and physical appearance, Islam has very clear instructions about the mixing of genders. A lot of boys these days think that it is acceptable to have female friends and to openly socialise and hang out with them. This is not right as Islam only permits us to meet with the opposite gender for school/ work related or otherwise unavoidable circumstances. Even then, complete modesty should be observed. Today, much of society does not understand the importance of modesty despite the clear teachings laid out by Allah the Almighty in the Holy Qur an. At such a time it is the responsibly of us Ahmadi boys and men to enlighten everyone by following the right teachings and observing Purdah to the best of our abilities. We must look up to the example of Hazrat Yousaf which encompasses the true essence of Purdah for men and can serve as the perfect benchmark for us to judge the appropriateness of our actions at all times. As time passed people forgot the teachings of Islam and what Allah expects from them, that is why Allah the Almighty sent the Promised Messiah to reform mankind. Purdah is the protection of ourselves from all things that can lead to sin. However, this protection is not through the use of physical weapons, but through the divine teachings of Islam. Huzoor aba stated in his Friday Sermon on 30th January 2004, Islam s and Ahmadiyyat s progress is linked to Purdah. It is evident that Purdah has The meaning of restraining your looks is that you prevent yourself from looking at every such thing that has been forbidden by Allah. been practiced from the time of.ﷺ the Holy Prophet Allah says that it is the duty of men to refrain from staring or looking at non-mehram women. This is because Satan can cause temptation and thoughts may begin to fill your mind and so Islam says that we should adhere to the Holy Quran and act upon it, in order to keep ourselves safe from sin. Mehram women may consist of family members or relatives and so non-mehram being any woman or girl who is not from your close family. Hence, the concept of Purdah is extremely vital for righteousness. Regarding Women it has been stated in the Holy Quran: And say to the believing women that they restrain their eyes and guard their private parts, and that they disclose not their natural and artificial beauty except that which is apparent thereof, and that they draw their head-coverings over their bosoms. (Chapter 24 Verse 32) There are many differences between males and females and so not all guidance can be for both types. Females are instructed to cover their heads and hide their beauty for self-respect and spiritual security. We need to remember that Purdah and Hijab actually establish the true dignity, independence and freedom of women. Purdah is also a way of keeping ourselves clean from evil. Purdah also represents many people s personality, for example if you are dressed well and nicely people will think good of you. The Promised Messiah as states in his book (Philosophy of the teachings of Islam,) that the soul tends to appreciate clean and respectable clothes, hence if you are pure from the outside then you will be pure from the inside. If you practice your Purdah then you will be protecting yourself from the evil eyes of Satan, and instead pleasing in the sight of Allah the Almighty. Article written by Mabroor Farukh 19 20

ISLAM AND SCIENCE Eclipses A solar Eclipse occurs, when the moon in the course of its motion around the earth, comes between the sun and earth in such a way that it prevents the light of the sun from reaching the earth, as demonstrated in the diagram. A Lunar eclipse occurs, when the earth comes between the sun and the moon in such a way that its shadow falls on the moon. Sun Moon falling directly in line An eclipse is caused in the area that the moon blocks the Sun. Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiani The Promised Messiah The prophecy of the eclipses (stated in the hadith) was fulfilled in Below are the exact dates on which they occurred. Facts About Eclipses For a solar and lunar eclipses, all three celestial (astronomical) bodies; Sun,Earth,Moon, need to be in alignment. During a total solar eclipse, conditions in the path of totality can change quickly. Air temperatures drop and the immediate area becomes dark. Lunar and solar eclipses are a phenomena which occur according to the laws of nature. The Holy Qur an has repeatedly drawn our attention to natural phenomena: Holy is He Who created all things in pairs, of what the earth grows and of themselves, and of what they know not. And a Sign for them is the night from which We strip off the day, and lo! they are left in darkness. And the sun is moving on to its determined goal. That is the decree of the Almighty, the All-Knowing God. And for the moon We have appointed stages, till it becomes again like an old dry twig of a palm-tree. It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor can the night outstrip the day. All of them float smoothly in an orbit. Holy Qur an, Surah Al-Ya Sin, Verse In the first of these verses a fundamental fact has been mentioned that Almighty God has created all things in pairs. We learn from science that the earth and the moon move around each other and complete a revolution in one month. Therefore, they form a pair. The earth and the moon jointly move around the sun and complete a revolution in one year. Thus, the sun and earth-moon system form another pair. In the solar system, there are numerous pairs within pairs. The sun, with all its planets and their satellites, move around the centre of the Galaxy completing a revolution approximately every two hundred million years. Holy is He Who created all things in pairs. The Eclipses of a sign of the Promised Messiah A prophecy of the Holy Qur an refers to eclipses of both the sun and moon occurring as a sign of the latter days: He asks, When will be the Day of Resurrection? When the eye is dazzled, And the moon is eclipsed. And the sun and the moon are brought together. Holy Qur an, Surah Al-Dahr, Verse 7-10 While the root of this prophecy thus lies in the Holy Qur an, a hadith (narration) of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ elucidates these verses and gives valuable detail: For Our Mahdi there are two Signs which have never appeared before since the creation of the heavens and the earth, namely, the moon will be eclipsed on the first night in Ramadan and the sun will be eclipsed on the middle of it (the same month), and these Signs have not appeared since God created the heavens and the earth. (Hadith) Sir Isaac Newton had discovered the law of gravitation in the 17th century C.E, which means that astronomical calculations of the eclipses were not possible before this discovery. Despite this, our lord and master, the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ made such a prophecy that could not have been possible without knowledge from the Omniscient God. One cannot imagine a better heavenly sign than this for Lunar Eclipse indicating the advent of the Promised Messiah and Imam Mahdi. This magnificent prophecy has been fulfilled by the Promised Messiah Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and he summarised this sign most wonderfully when he wrote that: As a matter of fact, since Adam to the present time, nobody ever made a prophecy like this. The prophecy has four aspects: (1) the occurrence of the lunar eclipse on the first of the eclipse nights. (2) the occurrence of the solar eclipse on the middle of the eclipse days, (3) the occurrence of both in the same month of Ramadan and (4) the presence of the claimant who has been rejected. Hence if the greatness of this prophecy is denied, then show a parallel to it in the world, Solar Eclipse March 21, 1894 April 6, 1894 and until a parallel cannot be found, this prophecy ranks foremost among all those prophecies to which the verse He reveals not His secrets to anyone can be applied, because it is stated here (in the hadith) that from the time of Adam to the end, it has no parallel. Tohfa-e-Golarviya, p. 29. Total solar eclipses can only last a maximum of 7 minutes 30 seconds because of the speed of the Moon orbiting Earth, the rotation of Earth and the focus of the Moon s shadow on Earth. The Sun is approximately 400 times further away from us than the Moon. The Moon is 400 times smaller than the Sun. Because of this, the Sun and Moon appear to look the same size in the Sky. Did you know that when an eclipse occurs there is a type of Namaz offered called Namaz-e-Kasoof (Khasoof if it is a lunar eclipse)

IN THE MEDIA In the wake of a set of terror attacks reported in Europe, including those on Barcelona more recently, it is important for Muslims, particularly Ahmadis who have actively condemned such acts at every opportunity, to remain informed about the true meaning of Islamic doctrine. Increasingly, terms like Jihad and Jihadist have received much coverage in the media. To this extent, many confuse the concept of Jihad with a mandate for mass murder endorsed by Islamic teaching. The aim of this article Is to help explain how this is a false representation and misconception. The meaning of the word Jihad in The In The Media section is a brand new edition to the Tahir Magazine aiming to bring to attention the true Islamic stance relating to what s in the news. If you have come across a story in the media that you wish to explain to others through the Islamic scope then send in your ideas to tahirmagazine@atfal.co.uk Killing the innocent is not Jihad Arabic is to strive or struggle. More recently however, the term has become associated with deadly forces of war and terror, first by those groups waving them as the justificatory banners for their violent deeds, and later by those who misunderstand such extremist interpretations as a representation of the entirety of Islam. The Jihad of our age As Ahmadi Muslims, we do not (God forbid) reject the idea of Jihad altogether. Instead, we recognise that Jihad by the sword (i.e. through warfare and weaponry) is not appropriate for this age. Our duties with regards to Jihad, as we have been taught by the Holy Prophet,ﷺ the Promised Messiah and his Successors, should in fact be carried out through peaceful means. Fundamentally, Jihad refers to an internal struggle with oneself in an effort to achieve and maintain righteousness. Such a struggle is said to have been referred to as the greater Jihad by the Holy Prophet.ﷺ Ideas of warfare and killing are in no way inherent within this concept. As stated by the Promised Messiah, the Jihad of this age is to strive in upholding the word of Islam, to refute the objections of opponents, to propagate the excellences of Islamic faith, and to proclaim the truth of the Holy Prophet ﷺ throughout the world. Conducting ourselves as devoted Muslims in the modern world, particularly in the west, contributes to the upholding of the word of Islam, spreading and promoting the many benefits of Islamic teaching. To this extent, modern Jihad can in many ways be supplied through the internal struggle referred to above. Moreover, defence of Islam by spoken word and by the pen through the alleviation of misconceptions by definition constitutes a form of Jihad. Thus, it is important for Atfal to absorb the message in articles like this one, as well as the many speeches of the Khalifah of our time, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V aba, and to pass it on where appropriate, for it is our duty to speak and write in the defence of Islam. Fighting for the preservation of faith Without a doubt the causes of Jihad do not exist in this country in these days. Therefore, the Muslims of this country are today forbidden to fight in the name of religion and to slaughter those who reject the Islamic law. God Almighty has clearly forbidden Jihad by the sword in a time of peace and security. However, the concept of Jihad is broader still. The picture of Jihad presented thus far in this article is in not, and cannot be, a comprehensive representation. Indeed, in the right circumstances, Jihad has historically meant standing and physically fighting in the defence of Islam. Such circumstances were present in the time of the Holy Prophet,ﷺ when the growing Islamic community of the time was subjected to brutal attacks from the non-believing Meccans. At the time, religious wars were sanctioned only against those who forcefully prevented others from accepting Islam, or those forcing people to deny it. Indeed, in their given situation, the partaking in warfare by Muslims constituted Jihad. Thus, it is important for Atfal to absorb the message in articles like this one, as well as the many speeches of the Khalifah of our time, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V aba, and to pass it on where appropriate, for it is our duty to speak and write in the defence of Islam. It is notable that the Muslims The Promised Messiah of the time under the guidance of the Holy Prophet ﷺ were instructed to fight by Allah the Almighty only when the enemy attempted to eradicate them and their religion. In the Holy Qur an, Allah the Almighty states that. Permission to fight is given to those against whom war is waged because they have been wronged. Allah, indeed, has the power to help them. (Surah Al-Hajj verse 41) Inherent in this verse (particularly when viewed in full on the quotes page) is an idea of necessity to utilise force where one is attacked for his or her belief in Islam. As such, fighting in that circumstance would achieve the same goals as our version of Jihad appropriate today (mentioned above): upholding the word of Islam through self-preservation and defence. As he Promised Messiah informed countless times, preservation in today s world should be achieved by the pen, not the sword. For the age that we live in, our motto Love for All, Hatred for None is indicative of the greater Jihad of our time spreading the real, peaceful message of Islam. Every Atfal should strive to contribute to this task, for this is a means of defending Islam from its dangerously misplaced label as a religion that (God forbid) spreads terror. True Islam shows that, in fact, Jihad and terror are very separate entities indeed

QUOTES ABOUT JIHAD The mujahid [the one who does Jihad] who is exalted above other mujahids is the one who strives against his own self. Allah will surely help one who helps Him. Allah is indeed powerful, mighty. The Holy Quran Surah Al-Hajj Verses The Jihad of this age is to strive in upholding the word of Islam, to refute the objections of the opponents, to propagate the excellences of the Islamic faith, and to proclaim the truth of the Holy Prophet ﷺ throughout the world. This is Jihad till God Almighty brings about other conditions in the world. The Promised Messiah TRUE JIHAD IS THE REFORMATION OF EVILS The question I raised was the significance of Jihad and the response is that in this age, the Jihad accepted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the reformation of self. This is not a recent idea. It was mentioned 1,400 years ago by the founder of Islam ﷺ upon his return from a battle, when he said that we are moving from a minor Jihad to a greater Jihad and the greater Jihad is the Jihad of reforming one s self and that is never ending and forever. The state of war does not last forever. True Jihad is the reformation of the evils which are borne in the times of relative peace and comfort. Serving mankind is a real Jihad. In the 120 years of our history, there is testimony to it. We are engaged in this Jihad. Whereas we are trying to bring mankind nearer to his Creator, our schools and hospitals, our plans for water wells and pumps in countries of Africa, Asia, and other poor countries and in far-flung areas of the world are continuing. 19 THE MKA UK NATIONAL IJTEMA Spiritually recharging Academic Competitions Sporting Competitions Exhibitions & Activities Purpose & Importance I n 1938, Ha ز zrat Musleh Maud created the Atfal auxiliary organisation. Also in 1938, the city of Qadian in India held the first ever Ijtema. In 2017, almost 80 years later, this blessed event has spread all over the world and at many different levels. The UK held its first Ijtema in 1965, but it was in the 1980s, that the land at Islamabad was bought where the Ijte- ma continued to grow for the next few decades. With the blessings of Allah, this gathering has become an important experience that every Tifl should have. Nowadays, Ijtemas are held all over the world, for example: USA, Canada, Germany, Ghana among many others. calendar. It brings together many Ahmadis for the remembrance of Allah whilst also creating an atmosphere of practical reform through academic and sporting activities. There are also many blessings associated with the Ijtema. In fact, the Holy Prophet ﷺ said: The National Ijtema is a very important occasion in the When people gather together for the remembrance of Allah they are surrounded by angels and are covered by mercy from their Lord. Remember that the sole purpose of such events is not to carry out competitions only, but it is an avenue for gathering to listen to good words of advice and improving your religious knowledge. I hope that your speeches and competitions would have proved fruitful in achieving this. Hazrat Amir-ul-Momineen Khalifatul Masih Vaba, UK National Atfal Rally, April This shows us that the Ijtema can raise our spiritual levels and get us closer to God. As well as this, the Ijtema gives the Ahmadi Youth a chance to work with friends towards a common goal, whether it is in football or in tug-of-war. Because of this, the Ijtema is an opportunity to create and strengthen our connections with our brothers. Simply receiving awards should not be your purpose, but rather it should be to enhance your religious education and piety. So I advise you to remember and implement all that you have learnt from either your fellow atfal, fellow young speakers or from your elders, from your organisers in your daily life.
