Papers read and Posters presented. Mr. Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan, the Acting Governor of Punjab, said that he feel honored to be consultants of medical sciences, both from Pakistan and from our sister country, Bangladesh. I also am so pleased to welcome the delegation from India said the Governor. The city of Lahore is blossoming and your presence is also one of the reasons of affection of the three countries that is a cause for it. God, said the Governor, has selected you to provide the healing and curing the ailing. Beware that healing and curing is a Godly act. So you all are so close to God Almighty. 2 Governor of Punjab went on to praise the research as without research, he said, the medicine tends to become stale and your Conference is going to be a great source of research. Pakistan, he pointed out, is getting laurels from all over the World, due to the Specialists and Consultants produced by CPSP and almost all countries, he has been, were full of praises for CPSP. He went on to point out that Religion and state boundaries are not a barrier for research. We should all help and cooperate in research as research is directed to healing and curing human beings all over the World. He further added that the natural calamities that Pakistan faced have tested its consultants and specialists, with integrity and honor for the country and people. Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry, President CPSP in his brief address told the audience that it is agreed between CPSP and BCPS to hold Joint Conferences every 3 years. It is so pleasant to have our Bangladeshi friends with us while we are initiating our Golden Jubilee celebrations at Lahore. He also welcomed the Indian delegation who is here to join in our celebrations. Prof. Chaudhry pointed out that the College has initiated the process of Continued Medical Education and he concluded his address by pointing out that the adversities bring forth the best potentials of a person. Prof. Mahmood Hussain thanked CPSP and paid compliments to the hospitality of CPSP and that of the people of Pakistan in general and people of Lahore in particular. Prof. Mahmood Hussain told the maternal care have been met before Health, he said, was a human right and BCPS is striving to achieve it for the people of Bangladesh through training specialists for their country. He expressed best wishes for CPSP who is now celebrating its Golden Jubilee and also for the people of Pakistan. He said that people of Bangladesh do wish to have very cordial relations with Pakistan. Prof. Rama Kant, President Association of Surgeons of India and President Indian College of Surgeons, amongst them while celebrating. He said friendship and cooperation is more of an issue of mindset. He occasions at international meetings and conferences. Prof. Rama Kant said that I am getting to know about Pakistan and CPSP anew and trying to unlearn what biases had painted about Pakistan in India. Prof. Rama Kant acknowledged that CPSP is ahead of most of the postgraduate institutes of India. He far it is better to have a company. The Joint Conference of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons was held on 14th April 2012 at Krystall Hall, Hotel Pearl Continental Lahore. This Joint Conference was the FIFTH of its kind where the two College delegates met and discussed problems and the solutions in medical education as proposed at their ends. CPSP Regional Center welcomed a delegation of about 80 specialists including President Prof. Mahmood Hussain and 19 other members of BCPS Council. celebrations that included a Joint Conference with Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons, held on 14th April This Joint Conference was preceded by a whole day of different workshops facilitated by renowned consultants of medical sciences. 2

Prof. Amir Aziz, Dr. Shahzad and Dr. Naeem facilitated another workshop on Foot and Ankle Dr. Amina Ahmad, Prof. Hamid Butt and Prof. Amir Zaman conducted another workshop on Work based Assessment at Hall E-log book was conducted by Mr. Shahzad Abid, GM IT and Mr. Haris Ejaz, of Lahore Regional Center. The Chief Controller of Examinations Dr. Muhammad Sharif meanwhile found it convenient to distribute The whole day of 14th April 2012 was dedicated to paper and poster presentations. The Joint Conference was inaugurated by the Acting Governor of Punjab, Mr. Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan, as Sardar Hussain, President BCPS and other members of his delegation. The Joint Conference was divided into SIX Sessions. First session was for free paper presentation. This session was presided over by Prof. Basher Ahmed with Prof. Azhar Hameed and Prof. Abdul Kader Khan, Vice President BCPS as Co-Chairmen and Prof. Aamir Zaman Khan as moderator. This session included free papers by M. Saiedullah BISH, Bangladesh on concentration of 1000mg/dl. Second paper on Bronchlolitis and Bangladesh was presented by Prof. LuthgulKabir. Prof. Aftab Mohsin of SIMS, Lahore presented a paper on Updates in Gastroenterology, while Prof. Sultana Razia Begum from Bangladesh presented her paper on screening of precancerous lesion of cervix using visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) of rural women in Bangladesh. Prof. Muhammad Amjad Analysis of complications in functional sinus surgery. A paper on Preliminary results of use of Interferon beta 2 alpha in ocular surface squamous cell neoplasms was presented by Dr. Zahid Kamal Siddiqui of PGMI. Dr. Imtiaz Faruk Staplers in Gastro Intestinal (GI) Surgery. Dr. Md. Mazharul Shaheen from Center for Medical Education (CME) Mokhali, Prevalence and associated socio-demographic factors of chronic supportive Otitis Media among rural primary school children of Bangladesh. Prof. Riaz Ahmed Warraich Oral and Mazillofacial surgery in 21st Century. Dr. Muhammad Shahzad from SIMS was the last speaker of this session with his paper on Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) He told that his was a study based on single center. The session concluded with remarks by Prof. Bashir Ahmed, chairman of the session stating that all the papers presented were of high quality. 3

4 Session three was devoted to Three memorial lectures on three important pioneers of medical sciences in Pakistan and Founding Fellows of the College. This important session was Chaired by Prof. Khawaja Sadiq Hussain, former President of CPSP and Co-chaired by Lt. Gen. (Retd) Afzal Hussain, presently Principal Army Medical College and Prof. A.H.M. Towhidul Anowar Chaudhry, former President BCPS. The session was moderated by Prof. Rakhshanda Rehman, a Councillor of CPSP and Principal Fatima Jinnah Medical College. Maj. Gen. Slaman Ali, a present Councillor of CPSP presented a citation on Lt. Gen. W. A Burki, the Founding President of CPSP and presented several hitherto unknown aspects of the life and some rare pictures. The citation was followed by a State of the Art lecture by Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz, Professor of Surgery on Trauma and progress of ATLS program in Pakistan. Next citation presented about Prof. S.M.K.Wasti, a Founding Fellow of CPSP and pioneer of Pediatrics in Pakistan was presented by Prof. Tariq Iqbal Bhutta, a former Vice President of CPSP, followed by a State of Art Lecture by Prof. Zeba Aziz from SIMS updating research on Oncology in Pakistan. The last citation read on Prof. N. A. Seyal, another Founding Fellow of CPSP, who pioneered work in establishing Obstetrics and Gynaecology in North Pakistan, especially at Multan and Lahore was read by Prof. Rakhshanda Rehman which was followed by a State of the Art Lecture on Infectious diseases by Prof. Faisal Sultan of Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital. The afternoon session, focused about update lectures, was chaired by Prof. JaleelUd Daula while Prof. Tipu Sultan and Prof. Mohammad Shahidullah from Bangladesh were Co-chairmen of the session with Prof. Tahir Masood as moderator. The session began with a lecture from Prof. Amir Zaman Khan developmental history and recent updates in the discipline of Surgery. Prof. Hamid Butt Opthalmology, CPSP presented his presentation about recent developments in Opthalmology. He was particularly focused about the usage of laser in optical surgery, especially in surgery of Cataract. Prof. Aziz ur Rehman in his presentation discussed about the recent developments in medicine. Prof. Mohammad Tayyab in his presentation discussed about recent advancements in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Prof. Manzoor Ahmed detailed the recent advancements in the discipline of ENT. Prof. Azaz Mand discussed Prof. Amir Aziz gave a detailed presentation on the recent advancements in Orthopedics and also pointed out what part of these advancements have been and are being implemented in Pakistan and the areas we need to improve. Prof. Kazi Yakub, Professor memorable session for all those who were interested to know about recent advancements closed with a vote of thanks from the Chair. Another session that ran simultaneously was focused on poster presentation and was chaired by Prof. Abdul Majeed Chaudhry and was Co-Chaired by Prof. T.I.M. Abdullah Al-Faruq of BCPS and with Prof. Muhammad Amjad as moderator. Every poster was to be of 5x3 feet with 3 minutes for each presentation. A free paper session, the last session, the session was Chaired by Prof. Attiya Mubarak and Co-Chaired by Prof. Kanak Kanti Basu of BCPS, with Prof. Javed Gardezi as moderator. 4

5 Dr. Khalid Rehman Yousuf of SIMS presented a paper on Sonographic features of polyserositis as an adjunct to clinicopathological parameters in diagnosing and predicting the severity of dengue fever. The Prof. Laila Arjumand Banu from Bangladesh presented her paper on Laparoscopic management of various ovarian cysts Pattern and risk factor of Cerebral Palsy. Disability in Children in Bangladesh Prof. Sibtul Hasnain Matter, the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan which has enabled him to attain whatever President CPSP went on the stage to present a memento to Prof. Sibtul Hasnain. Dr. Seemi Hussain from FJMC went on to present her paper on recent updates in mechanisms underlying obesity associated insulin resistance. Dr. Imran Khalid from SIMS presented his paper on while Dr. Imtiaz Ali, a PGY 4 presented the last paper on Anesthetic management of an infant with. This was the last paper of the Joint Conference and with vote of thanks to The Councils of CPSP and BCPS were invited by the Governor of Punjab at tea at the Governor House, Punjab. Dr. Amina Ahmad, Prof. Hamid Butt and Prof. Amir Zaman facilitated a workshop on Work based Assessment at CPSP Regional center, Lahore.
