Abdus Salam, President Pakistan Engineering Congress was born in 1927 at Kalanour (now Bharat). He passed his matriculation examination from Central Model High School Lahore. He graduated from Government College Lahore and obtained his Degree of B.Sc. Engg. (Civil) from the Punjab College of Engineering and Technology Moghalpura Lahore in He joined Punjab PWD Buildings and Roads, Branch in In the year 1953, he joined the Provincial Service of Engineers Class-1 and was promoted as Executive Engineer in During this period, he worked on the construction of roads in Thal area and in D.G. Khan District. He proceeded abroad in 1958 on a scholarship of the Federation of British Industries for practical training in U.K. He served with Sir Alfred Mcalpines Civil Engineering Contractors Liverpool and worked on their major projects in reinforced concrete and pre-stressed concrete. He spent a period of one year with this firm. Subsequently, he worked with Rendal Palmer and Tritton Consulting Engineers Victoria Street London for about 1.5 years in their Roads and Bridges Section. While in England, he also studied in the Imperial College of Science and Technology London and obtained D. l. C. in Concrete Technology. He obtained membership of the institution of Structural Engineers London and Institution of Civil Engineers London through examinations. He spent a total period of 3 years in England. This sharpened his engineering insight and broadened his vision for undertaking higher responsibilities in the Communication and Works Departments, Government of the Punjab, on return to Pakistan in 1961, In 1962 he was promoted as Superintending Engineer and posted as Director Bridges West Pakistan. In this capacity, he designed a number of major river bridges in West Pakistan viz over Ravi, Jhelum, Chenab and Sutlej. The World Bank accepted his design of bridges subject to review by reputed foreign Consultants. Thus he had the opportunity to work with leading Consultants of the World in this field. He held this position till 1970, when he again proceeded to U.K. for a Master's degree in Transportation Engineering. His thesis was on "Maintenance of Bituminous Roads". He contributed a number of technical papers which were published in Pakistan and abroad. He was awarded a special prize for the best paper read at a Seminar organised by the Institution of Structural Engineers, London in In 1974, he was awarded a Colombo Plan fellowship and remained attached for three months with the Main Roads Department Brisbane, Australia, studying 'latest techniques in the design and construction of roads. In 1973, he proceeded to Iran, on deputation with an International firm of Consulting Engineers and served with them as their Chief Structural Engineer for 3.5 years. He returned in 1979 and was promoted as Chief Engineer Buildings in the same year. He held this post till October During this period he was responsible for major projects like High Court Bench Building Rawalpindi, Adiala Jail Rawalpindi, renovation of Quaid-e-Azam Library Lahore etc. He was promoted as Secretary to Government of the Punjab, Communications and Works Department in 1985 and is presently serving the Punjab Government in this capacity. He was elected unopposed as President of the Pakistan Engineering Congress for the 62 nd Session which happens to be its Diamond Jubilee Session.

MUHAMMAD IKRAMULLAH PRESIDENT, 63 rd Session ( ) PAKISTAN ENGINEERING CONGRESS (Brief Life Sketch) Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ikramullah, President of Pakistan Engineering Congress for the 63 rd Session, year , is a distinguished Scholar and Educationist in the field of engineering education and currently holds the office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Engineering and Technology Lahore. Born in 1931, he graduated from the Punjab University in He then joined the then college of Engineering in Immediately after graduation, he started teaching career as a lecturer on the same institution. In 1961 he went to U.K as a Common Wealth Scholar and earned the Degree of Ph. D. from the University of London in 1963 in the field of Hydraulic Engineering. He was raised to the position of a full Professor in During his long teaching career he has held numerous senior positions including that of Chairman, Department of Civil Engineering, Dean Faculty of Civil Engineering and the Vice Chancellor University of Engineering and Technology Lahore. He had to relinquish the last assignment in September 1968 due to failing health. He made invaluable contribution when the Institution was being transformed from a College to the University in 1961, and later on played a pioneering role in the establishment and development of its Post-graduate Programmes. He has done outstanding work on experimental Hydraulics and participated in a workshop in the field held in Asian Institute of Technology, Bankok in He proceeded on deputation to teach at King Abdul Aziz University Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from September 1980 to June Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ikramullah has had a distinguished academic record. He topped amongst the successful candidates in the bachelors Degree Examination of Civil Engineering held in He completed his work for the Ph. D Degree in the minimum prescribed period of two years, and in view of the excellence of his work he was exempted from the pre-requisite of securing an M.Sc. Degree before acceptance for Ph.D programme. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ikramullah is currently involved in the management of various Institutes of higher learning in Engineering and Management. He has been actively participating in various projects of engineering and technology at National and International levels. He is a member of American Society of Civil Engineers, Pakistan Engineering Council, Pakistan Engineering Congress, Institute of Engineers Pakistan and Pakistan Association for the Advancement of Science.
