1 Who are the Deobandis? After praising Allah, the Most High, and sending blessings upon our most beloved messenger, the seal of prophet hood, Muhammad, ( االله عليه و سلم (صلى and upon his (رضى االله عنهم أجمعين ( companions, noble And all those who follow them upon the truth until the day of judgement. Many people are confused who sincerely want to practice Islam, and are being victimised by those who claim to be upon the truth but in reality are far distant from it. This disease that is like bacteria and cancer in the Muslim Ummah, (and may Allah protect us from it), is being propagated by many deviant groups of the Muslim Ummah. These deviant groups use titles such as Ahlus-Sunnah Wal-Jama aah to distort the innocent hearts of the sincere Muslims to attract them to accept their crooked ways that are contrary to the teachings of the Qur aan & Sunnah, and have a hidden agenda plotted against the people of truth. What are the prospects for overcoming the strife and confusion between the people who are sincere and these deviant groups? The answer is simple to return back all the affairs, disputes, and arguments to the Qur aan & Sunnah in accordance to the (رضى االله عنهم أجمعين ( companions understanding of the As Allah has commanded all the Muslims to follow this principal. Amongst these deviant groups is a group by the name of Deobandis the question is who are they? I would like to present the reader to read the description and attribution of this group by one of their leading Mufti by the name of Abdur Rahim Lajpuri who recently died this year. An important point to remember is that this identification is of theirs and not of ours, and many incorrect statements and claims have been made in this quotation that we are in disagreement to. We have quoted the statements of the leaders of Deoband so that the reading audience may witness that we are just and truthful about the Deobandis and we also do not lie or forge anything about these people rather we quote exactly what they describe and ascribe themselves to be. Mufti Abdur Rahim Lajpuri 1 writes in responding to the vicious propaganda against the ulema of Deoband and the Tabligh Jam at. Religiously, the ulema of Deoband are Muslims; as a sect, they belong to the ahl-as-sunna wa l-jama ah; by mazhab, they are Hanafites: in conduct (mashraban), they are Sufi; scholastically, they are Maturidi; in suhik (spiritual discipline), they are Chisti-rather they combine all the Sufi orders, in school of thought, they follow Vali-u llah; in principal, they are Qasimi, in sub-divisions (secondary matters), they are Rasheedi; and in nisbat, they are Deobandi. 2 Mufti Abdur Rahim Lajpuri further writes answering the question who may be called Ahl-as Sunnah wa l Jama ah? In short, the Muslims who follow the Deoband School are true followers of and obedient to the Holy prophet (pbuh.!) and his holy Companions; they are genuine Ahlas Sunnah wa l-jama ah and Sunni Hanafites, as it is laid down in the basic principles of the Daru l-ulum of Deoband that (4) the maslak (path, mode) of the Daru l-ulum of Deoband shall be that of the Ahl-as Sunnah wa l-jama ah, its mazhab shall be Hanafite and its mashrab (manner, pattern) shall be that of its august founders, viz. Maulana Muhammad Qasim Nanotvi and Maulana Rasheed Ahmed Gangohi. (Dastur-e Asasi m ae A een-dar u l-ulum-e Deoband). In essentials and beliefs they follow Imam Abu l Hasan Ash ari and Imam Abu Mansur Maturidi; and in subprincipals, Imam Abu Hanifah. They are initiates of the Chishtiyyah, Naqshabandiyyah, Qadiriyyah and Suhrawardiyyah Sufi orders; and the ten signs mentioned above are fully applicable to them. 3 Maulana Khalil Ahmed Sharanpuri 4 one of the greatest scholars of Deoband writes regarding them: We and our Sheikhs and the whole of our Jama ah (the Deobandis) with the praise of Allah, are blind followers ( (مقلد of the greatest Imam Abu Hanifah Noa man Bin Thaabit ( رضى االله عنه ) in the subsidiary issues (secondary matters), and in principal and ) رضى االله Maturidi, belief follow Imam Abu l Hasan Ash ari and Imam Abu Mansur, and in the mystic way of Sufism we are connected with the noble Sufi orders of عنهما ( Hazrat Naqshabandiyyah, and the purifying way of the Sheikhs of Naqshabandiyyah, the Sufi orders of Bahiyah, the saints of Qadiriyyah, the way of Mardhiyyah upon the way of the Sheikhs of Suhrawardiyyah. 5 Maulana Muhammad Yusuf Binori 6 says regarding the conducted way of the Deobandis: The conduct of the great scholars of Deoband has always remained intact that after A-Hadeeth, whilst taking into consideration the important significance of Fiqh and Ijtihaad they accept the Jurist of this Ummah Hazrat Imam Abu Hanifah as their Imam and along side this they also accept the mingling of Spiritual Sufi refiners of the hearts with the knowledge of Sufism and purification in the correct manner. In one aspect they acknowledge the awe-inspiring qualities of Ibn Taymiyah than on the other hand they also acknowledge the excellence and miracles of Sheikul-Akbar Muhyud- Deen Ibn Arabi. With the blind following and obedience of Imam Abu Hanifah the combination and integration of the A-Hadeeth of the prophet and the knowledge of Sufism shall be gathered in a beautiful efficacious manner that shall conduct an 3 Fatawa Rahimiyah, Volume 1, Kitabul-Ilm page question no. 3 appearance of impressing the mind & heart, that is the meaning of the Deobandi school of thought and has become their way of conduct. 7 Who was Ashraf Ali Thanwi Deobandee? Ashraf Ali Thanwi was born on the 5 th Rabeeuth-Thanee 1280 A.H. 8 Hafiz Ghulam Murtazaa Paanee Patee forecasted (regarding him), even before his mother s pregnancy, that she would have two sons and both of them would live. 9 Some people have said regarding Ashraf Ali Thanwi that he was awarded a monthly salary of 600 Indian Rupees from the British Government. 10 Ashraf Ali Thanwi died in the year 1362 A.H. 11 include: His famous writings and books نشر الطيب في ذآر النبي الحبيب.1 امداد المشتاق الي أشرف الا خلاق.2 حكايت اولياء.3 حفظ الا يمان.4 بهشتي زيور.5 الا فادا ت اليومية.6 In Nashrub-Tayyib 12 Ashraf Ali Thanwi has said: Help and Aid me my prophet: In the state of struggle and perplexity you are the one my prophet. 4 My Sufi Sheikh had an active disciple. After the sheikh s death he visited the sheikhs grave and said to the dead sheikh: Oh Sheikh I am extremely disturbed, I am in need of the means of livelihood, help me in this matter. It was commanded to the disciple by the dead sheikh that from his grave he would receive a sum of two Aanaas 14 or a half Aanaa on a daily base. Once I (Ashraf Ali Thanwi) was visiting my sheikh s grave and this disciple was also present he informed me of the whole situation and said that daily he received an appointed scholarship from the aggrandize grave. Hikaayaate-Awliya 15 is another famous book of Ashraf Ali Thanwi. In this book he says: Honourable Sir Khan said that Maulana Nanotwee narrates that Shah Abdur- Raheem Wilaayatee had a disciple by the name of Abdullah Khan who was the Peer of his people and was from amongst the esteem and selected disciples of Shah Abdur-Raheem. The condition and state of the disciple was such that if at somebody s household there was a women that was pregnant and if somebody from the household would visit the disciple with the request of attaining an amulet or a talisman, the disciple would forecast that in so and so house there shall be the birth of a girl or the birth of a boy. And what ever the disciple would say and forecast, exactly that is what would happen. In his book Hifzul-Imaan, 16 Ashraf Ali Thanwi has written: If regarding the issue of the knowledge of the unseen that is attributed to the sacred personality of the prophet with the example of a person by the name of Zaid saying this, than in order for it to be authentic and correct, the saying of Zaid shall be examined whether Zaid intends all or some type of the knowledge of the unseen. If Zaid when he says that the Prophet has knowledge of the unseen intends that the prophet possesses some type and part of the knowledge of the unseen, than this is not SOMETHING SPECIFIC FOR THE PROPHET, THIS TYPE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF UNSEEN CAN ALSO BE ATTAINED BY ORDINARY PEOPLE BY THE NAME OF ZAID, AMAR, IN FACT EVERY INFANT BOY, MENTALLY DISABLED PERSON, ALL THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANIMALS AND BEASTS ARE BEARERS OF THIS. 14 A former coin equivalent to one sixteenth of an Indian Rupee. 15 Page 184 and 185. 5 We seek forgiveness of Allah and Seek His refuge from such nonsense. This reprehensible statement toward the Prophet peace be upon him can also be found in Imdadul-Fataawaa 17. In his book, Heavenly Ornaments 18 Ashraf Ali Thanwi has invoked Allah by saying Oh my Allah for your sake, and has made Tawassul 19 through the dog of the people of the cave which according to them is known as Qitmeer. In Al-Ifaadhaatul-Yawmiyyah, 20 Ashraf Ali Thanwi has said: Regarding the mentioning of the specific auspiciousness good fortune done by the noble saints, than regarding this subject the souls of the noble saints have various conditions (Some of the souls of the saints are granted the ability to do good fortune and some souls do not ) Some of the souls are able to dispose good fortune and some souls cannot In the very same book, Al-Ifaadhaatul-Yawmiyyah 21 Ashraf Ali Thanwi has written such a passage that I do not have the strength and courage to narrate it here with my pen. 17 Volume 6 page Page 839, part 9 page 101, and in another printed edition page Used the dog s personality as a means for getting closer to Allah. 20 Volume 10 page 107, Malfooz no Volume 1 page 266, Malfooz Number 400.

6 AN INTRODUCTION OF THE MADRASAAH, DARUL-ULOOM DEOBAND The foundation of Madrassah Deoband was laid upon the filth and rubbish area at the bank of the town of Deoband. 22 The foundation of this Madrassah that was laid on this rubbish filthy bank, rather better known as Dirt House was 15 th Muharram 1283 A.H. corresponding to 3 rd May 1867 CE Thursday. 23 The very first person that laid the first brick was Munnai Shah Saheb. 24 In the aid of the establishment of Darul-Uloom Deoband, the Hindus can be regarded as to have contributed and donated a large amount of sum. From amongst the list of Hindu contributors include: 1. Munshi Ram 2. Ram Sahaa ai 3. Munshi Hardiwaaree Laal 4. Laalaah Bayjaanth 5. Pandit (Hindu Preist) Shree Ram 6. Munshi Moti Laal 7. Ram Laal 25 On 31 st January, Sunday 1867 CE one of Governor Luftant s loyal secret agent on behalf of the British Empire visited Darul-Uloom Deoband and expressed good thoughts and support for this institution. This British wrote in his evaluation of Darul- Uloom Deoband: This Institution is not in opposition to the British Government in any way, infact it is in accordance with British Government policies and is considered as an helper on behalf of the British Government. 26 Regarding the British Government Molvi Asheeq Ilahee Mirthee has written: The kind-hearted government. 27 Asheeq Ilahee further writes regarding his great scholars that include Muhammad Qaseem Nanotwee etc: 22 Fakhrul-Ulema page 64, author Sayyid Ishtiyaaq Azhar. 7 Like all the scholars were heartrending toward their well-wishing government, the whole of their life they established this. 28 At the celebration of the hundred years annual gathering of Darul-Uloom Deoband, Indira Ghandi the Prime Minister of India attended this auspicious gathering as a special invited guest.
