Channu Kambalyal I am delighted to see the progress made by the 2016 Convention Committee, led by Convention Chair G. Jagadeesh & Co-Chair Shashidhar Nagenalli and Savitha Shivananda, President, MD Chapter. The monthly convention newsletter initiated by the committee demonstrates the eagerness and preparedness to welcome you all to the convention. The Maryland chapter deserves a special admiration for the great start they made by showcasing the event at the 2015 convention. The team has chosen a down-to-earth theme ತನ ನ ಮನ ಭ ವ ಶನದ ಧ ಯ - ನ ಡ ನ ನಡ ಯಲ ಕ ಣ (Experience the immaculate body, mind, thoughts through deeds and words), which truly reflects the universality and simplicity portrayed in numerous Vachanas of Veerashaivism. As we invite you to the 2016 VSNA Annual convention, I would like to stress the main purpose of the convention and the benefits of your participation. As you know the core mission of VSNA has been to Preserve, Protect and Propagate the Universal Philosophy of Basaveshwara and his contemporaries in North America. The convention is the most important event when we all get together on a larger scale every year to better understand this philosophy not only for us as individuals, but also to let our children increase their awareness of the universal values that we are fortunate to have inherited. It is interesting to note that for many years, the VSNA convention is held on the July 4 th weekend, the day of independence of the United States of America, representing its struggle for democratic values and equality among its people. This is exactly what Basaveshwara and numerous shara- Nas struggled for the humanity in the 12 th century, much before such thoughts evolved in the western world. The ideals reflected in the Vachanas not only cover the social aspects, but also the individual and interpersonal level conduct, that we should follow to achieve the enlightenment - desire to see God by awakening the consciousness within us. The richness of Veerashaiva philosophy is so vast and yet so simple, that we often take it for granted, and continue to look elsewhere for guidance from various sources. It is through such annual conventions that we get together in person with a focus to learn from the spiritual leaders of Veerashaivism. There is an additional aspect that you will benefit from the convention that is in your professional growth as well! On a routine basis, we are all engrossed in our professional careers trying hard for promotions to increase our net worth. In this endeavor, we fail to understand few basics that enables us to achieve the very same. Many management universities and institutes provide leadership courses and training that enhance our careers, with courses such as Emotional Intelligence. Basava s well-known vachanas describe the same concepts of self-control, self-awareness, relationship building and the social awareness. And the theme selected by the convention committee very appropriately fits these concepts. I am sure, with your presence at the convention, you will surely gain much more that enable you to do well in all walks of life, and benefits not only yourself but also your future generations. So, welcome to the 39 th VSNA Convention at Ellicott City, Maryland, on July 4 th weekend! Channu Kambalyal President, Central VSNA We are happy to announce the acceptances from following dignitaries: Parama Poojya Shri Siddeshwara Swamji of Jnana Yogashrama, Vijayapura, His Holiness Jagadguru Shri Shivarathri Desikendara Mahaswamiji of Suttur Mutt, Mysore, and His Holiness Shri Siddalinga Swamiji of Siddaganga Gurukula, Tumkur, have agreed to deliver benedictions (ಆಶ ರ ವಚನ). Shri Babasaheb Kalyani (Chairman and MD, Bharat Forge Ltd., Pune) and Dr. Shivananda Jaamdar, IAS (Former Principal Secretary to the Govt. of Karnataka) have graciously agreed to attend the convention and deliver keynote address. 4 Page : 4 D E C O R AT I O N C O M M I T T E E WELCOME FROM DECORATION COMMITTEE SharaNu, Shanthala Basavappa Decoration is often the most daunting but exciting part of an event; it needs serious attention and often relies on collaboration of other committee coordinators to arrive at a common agreement of what the event theme is all about. As a member of the decorations committee for the VSNA 2016, I would like to invite you all to the 39 th VSNA convention that will be held at the Turf Valley Resort, Maryland. The Decoration Committee s main objectives are to: 1. Transform the golf resort into a befitting venue for the Sharanara Sammelana - ಶರಣರ ಸಮ ಮ ಳನ 2. Bring out the 39 th VSNA convention s theme ತನ ನ, ಮನ, ಭ ವ ಶನದ ಧ ಯ - ನ ಡ, ನ ನಡ ಯಲ ಕ ಣ into an aesthetic form. 3. Bring the nostalgia for the adult Sharanas and give the young ones a glimpse into the rich religious, social and cultural history of their roots. Our ancestors used decoration as a holistic way to represent their beliefs and culture. The decorations were inspired by nature, surroundings, and religious messages. One of the vachana says ಅರ ಯಲ ದನ ಕನರನಹ ಟ ಟ, which can be loosely translated as a symbol, a tangible form, is provided to help understand a complicated concept. Pictures can speak thousands of words. The Decoration Committee hopes to accomplish this task of translating these ancient messages into artful forms that can be more easily comprehended. Here in Maryland, preparing the decoration has been not just a team effort but the entire VSNA community effort. The decoration committee has received generous offers from the community to use their personal decorative items, time, service, storage space in their houses and a few of the team members have sacrificed their baggage s to bring the decorations from India! It has been a pleasure to come up with the fitting ideas and implement them! Committee management has been very encouraging and fully supportive of the Decoration committee s idea. 5 Page : 5 E N T E R TA I N M E N T C O M M I T T E E WELCOME FROM ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE Fellow Sharanas, Cultural programs have been an integral part of VSNA conventions. Though they are generally meant for entertainment for the convention attendees, our primary goal is to spread the Sharana philosophy, our culture, traditions, and heritage through these programs. Cultural programs are very effective mode of communicating these values to the younger generation. Thanks to these programs and the sustained efforts of all VSNA chapters, today we have a profound number of youth members with a great understanding of the Sharana philosophy. The Stage and Entertainment Committee of the 2016 VSNA Convention is very excited about this excellent opportunity to work with all VSNA chapters to bring out a variety of cultural and entertainment programs. We invite all enthusiastic and talented Veerashaivas, from every Chapter, to actively participate. We will be happy to provide a wonderful platform for our talented members to showcase their talent. While we invite group programs under many performing arts categories, such as songs, dances, plays, skits etc., we strongly encourage chapters to exhibit their creativity through new concepts. This year, our convention s theme is Let the purity in body, mind and thoughts reflect in our deeds and words (ತನ ನ ಮನ ಭ ವ ಶನದ ಧ ಯ - ನ ಡ ನ ನಡ ಯಲ ಕ ಣ ). We request all chapters to kindly consider the convention s theme while planning the programs for the cultural event. Apart from the entertainment from the VSNA talent pool, we are also planning to entertain the convention attendees through some exhilarating programs from professional artists from India. The committee is currently working on a few final details (visa, etc) with three professional artists groups. Please look out for further details in the next issues of this newsletter. The registration for cultural and entertainment programs is already open on the convention website The deadline for submitting entries is May 15 th, Based on the response so far, we anticipate a large number of entries this year. Please submit your entries online right away. Hope to see you all light up the stage during the convention. SharaNu, Mrityunjay Mahashetty On behalf of the Stage & Entertainment Committee 2016 VSNA Convention Mrityunjay Mahashetty Apart from the entertainment from the VSNA talent pool, we are also planning to entertain the convention attendees through some exhilarating programs from professional artists from India.

Page : 16 S H A R A N A P H I L O S O P H Y FEARLESS DEVOTION There was once, a young girl who was obsessed with God as her husband. She had fallen in love with Him since she was eight years old, and now Ashwini Surpur at sixteen, the maiden was lost in her love and devotion for Him. The king of that province saw this beautiful maiden and he desired to marry her. He sent for her parents and put forth his request. The parents, after consulting the daughter who was in love with the Lord of the universe, told the king that the girl was not interested. Then came the threats from the king to the girl. She was not a girl that could be threatened so easily and the king knew that. So he threatened to kill her parents a threat that she had to succumb to. But then, she revealed her love for her Lord to the king. Conditions for marriage were put forth by this clever maiden, so she had time to spend in her meditation and prayer. An unseen God to be my contender? well, thought the king. That should be no issue. The girl was brought into the palace, with her previous Boy-Friend. She continued her old relationship. Her prayers, meditation and service to the Lord went on unhindered as the king was afraid of losing her good-will otherwise. The king was tolerating the girl as much as he could. Perhaps the girl was also tolerating the king as much as she could. But then, were these two opposite ends of the spectrum to ever meet? The day of reckoning came. She was in her prayer room, deeply engrossed with her Lord. She had joined Him in divine union and had lost herself. It was the union of male and female cosmic powers; the Shiva and the Shakti; the Purusha and the Prakriti; or by any other name one would choose to call it. It was literally the marriage in heaven. The king was watching her from the window. He never imagined the existence of such a relationship between the seen and the unseen, between the form and the formless. She had lost herself in this divine union and nothing else mattered to her. Her marriage had occurred long ago. Her presence on this earth in her human form also did not matter; leave alone the marriage with the king. The king walked in and saw her. Her beautiful body attracted him and the next moment, his body was burning with jealousy. He felt betrayed. How could he, the king of the province, tolerate his wife s disloyalty? He challenged her, insulted her and her beloved Lord, threatened to throw her divine Boy-Friend out the window, and came near her. Her serene face did not change. He touched her. Then her face turned red with rage. She had tolerated him enough. She did not exist as a human body. She was only existing as the wife of Him whom none could see other than her. She was a lover, a devotee and the surrendered, who had offered herself totally to Him. Could anyone stop or change the course of such a person? Did she fear anyone or anything? None could dare to challenge her. The king tried. He reminded her that everything she possessed including her clothes belonged to the king. If she had to disown the king, she had to give up everything that was his. So he pulled her clothes. Enraged and bewildered, she rose. The entire womanhood was rising, as it were. Her dignity was questioned, abused and threatened. Her Lord s obeisance was questioned. That could not be tolerated. She removed and threw her clothes on his face and told him to watch her disgusting body. She challenged him to see the flesh and blood, urine, mucus, saliva and feces. She dared him to touch her and boldly walked out of the palace. Not even her own God could stop her now. This sixteen-year-old girl was now beyond the mundane world. This is not a fiction. She is Akka Mahadevi, the elder sister of all the seniors of her time, especially of Basavanna. She lived during the 12th century Bhakti Movement in Karnataka. An unswerving devotion to the cause that we have taken can make anyone like Akka Mahadevi. A noble cause and an absolute dedication is what it takes. Want to take this young woman as your role model? Sure, by taking a cause and devoting your life to your own chosen path. Ashwini Surpur Cupertino, California

Page : 18 S H A R A N A P H I L O S O P H Y REVOLUTION OF KALYANA If we drop R from Revolution, we come up with Evolution. What has one got to do with the other? Well, a lot; though seemingly unrelated and unconnected! The world s history abounds in examples of one or another type of Revolution; though the world s history begins with evolution itself. Both have far reaching consequences; on the time-scale, a revolution has a shorter span; evolution, on the other hand, is a very, very deliberately prolonged process. The first entails loss of life and property, while the other modifies life. Both of them require some sort of motivating cause(s) or causative factors. For revolution, in view of the dire consequences it ushers in, not only the conditions have got to be just ripe but also it requires the participation of a leader with fortitude and commitment to the cause. Since evolution is a deliberately and carefully controlled slow process; the survival of the species provides the raison d être. The French Revolution (1789 ~ 1799) and the Russian Bolshevik Revolution (1917) serve as examples which illustrate what revolutions are all about, for both of these revolutions consumed and swallowed thousands of lives during the brutal armed conflicts. As Sage Valmiki s epic Ramayana (~4000 BC or earlier) points a path to evolution [also reference is made to Charles Darwin (19 th Century CE)]. However, the Revolution of Kalyana is unmatched in the annals of human history, for it was a non-violent march to achieve noble ends wiping away the then prevailing inequalities and injustices. Though the Western world credits the18th century French Revolution for equality, fraternity and freedom, these words were the corner stones of the 12 th Century Veerashaiva Revolution in Kalyana pioneered by Basaveshwara. The prevailing practices exploitation of the downtrodden, idol worship, blind beliefs, discrimination, thievery, lying, cheating, killing, etc of the 15 th century BC made Moses to bring down from the mountain for the benefit of the Jewish community after 40 days severe penance the code of conduct the Ten Commandments - (1) you shall worship no other gods before me, (2) you shall make no idols, (3) you shall not take the name of the god, your Lord, in vain, (4) remember the holy Sabbath day, (5) honor your parents, (6) you shall not murder, (7) you shall not commit adultery, (8) you shall not steal, (9) you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor and (10) you shall not covet. - bears a striking resemblance to the conditions that Basavanna found during the 12 th century when he accompanied King Bijjala to Kalyana after 12 years or so of intense study at Koodala Sangama and could not resist but voice his thoughts, thus for the benefit of the humanity at large: Steal not, kill not, speak not the untruth, be not angry, show not contempt for others, show not your pride, speak not ill of others; this is the way to internal purity and the way to please Lord Koodala Sangama. Basavanna embarked on a new radical non-dogmatic practical path bereft of age-old societal evils that for millennia had persisted and prevented the welfare of the people at large and he unleashed his creative energy and power to usher in revolutions-a`-galore! In a sense, he tried to transform Kalyana into Kailas (heaven). Milestones of the Revolution: We - the post- 12 th century and the future generations of Veerashaivas - are blessed to be the recipients of: (i) virtual benefits and (ii) real benefits. To the latter category belong the Veerashaiva mutts and monuments spread across the State of Karnataka [1]. And to former group, belong the noble principles and practices of the Veerashaiva religion, namely (a) Panchachara, (b) Ashtavarna, (c) Shatsthala; (d) Supra-Shakti Vishistadvaitism, (e) Kayaka (Work-Ethic) and (f) Dasoha (Sharing/service). Additional details on these topics can be found in the publications of the Veerashaiva Samaja of North America [2, 3]. Revolution in Ethics: Among the host of sharanas attracted to Kalyana by Basava s revolution were Aayadakki Maarayya and his wife Lakkamma, and Moliegeya Maarayya and his wife Mahadevi; in reality the latter were King Mahadevaraya and Queen of Kashmir. They sacrificed their kingdom and left their young son in their old age and joined the revolution of Kalyana as Maarayya and Mahadevi and adopted wood-chopping and fire-wood selling as their Kayaka [4a]. The principle of kayaka (work-ethic) tells everybody to earn their living by working. It also expects the faithful to charge a fair and commensurate fee or financial return for their labor. They thought that honest work ought to be executed with pure conscience and mind, in addition to that the dedicated labor is like the blessed heaven. They stated openly that begging signifies the death of the true spirit of work. It asks us not to be greedy and not to hoard for future. These four sharanas were the living legends of the sense and spirit of the twin concepts of kayaka and dasoha. From the honestly earned resources, the Veerashaiva ethics demand us to share the excess with the less fortunate folks of the society. Sharana Aayadakki Maarayya illustrates all the three aspects Kayaka, Dasoha and Hoarding/Desire. His wife Lakkamma taught him the true meaning of these words [4]. To lead ethically righteous life and living, we can all profit from Basava a prescription: If you should speak, your speech should sparkle like a pearl-necklace; If you should speak, your speech should sparkle like a shining sapphire; If you should speak, your speech should be shining like (Continued on page 19)
Page : 19 S H A R A N A P H I L O S O P H Y (Continued from page 18) a colorless crystal rod; If you should speak, your speech should be pleasing to the Lord; if your words do not match your deeds, how could you deserve and receive Koodala Sangama Deva s blessings? There is neither heaven nor hell; speaking truth is heaven, speaking untruth is hell; righteous behavior is heaven, unrighteous conduct is hell; this is the Truth, Oh! Lord Koodala Sangama Deva. Gender Revolution: The most powerful empires the world had known during the pre- Christian epoch, namely the Greek Empire and the Roman Empire, went down the drain. Why? Buddhism which originated in India around 500 BC lost its luster and popularity in India though it preached and practiced non-violence and the abolition of the caste-based discrimination. Why? When one thinks of Greek philosophy and empires, Socrates, the teacher of Plato, the teacher of Aristotle, the teacher of Emperor of Alexander, the Great, come to mind. After the Greek philosophy started losing its charm, a new thought- Stoicism started gaining popular acceptance because of its humane philosophy and began breezing west towards the Roman Empire. Seneca, Cicero, Epictetus and Emperor Marcus Aurelius were the pillars of Stoicism. The emperor s death sounded the death of the Stoic philosophy. Why? As the recorded history reveals, the Greek and Roman empires as well as their philosophies disappeared for the simple reason that they chose to ignore women. as co-equal partners. The Greeks and the Romans considered and ridiculed women as toys for pleasure and for producing children. The great Buddha originally thought that women were not fit for Nirvana. Why single out the simple-minded and soft-talking Buddha, several millennia before him, Sage Manu, the Noah of the Vedic culture and the creator of the Manu s Law, thought that a woman does not deserve freedom. Stoicism disappeared from the world, for there was no place for women in it. Our sharanas answered the Why thus: the soul inside a man and a woman is neither male nor female - Jedar Dassimayya; It is said a woman is maya (illusion); she is not - Allam Prabhu; A woman is not a demon or illusion; she is Mallikarjuna Himself -Moligeya Marayya; The hand that rocks the cradle rules the nation - Folklore. The 12 th century Anubhava Mantapa still standing in Basava Kalyana, though renovated during the latter part of the 20 th century, serves as a living lighthouse beacon shining on the gender revolution wrought by our 12 th century sharanas led by Basava. The Anubhava Mantapa is a proof to women s liberation from the male domination and it showcases the accomplishments of the Veerashaiva sharaneyaru [5]. Socio-Cultural Revolution: The lower class folks were treated worse than animals until the 12 th century; for the upper class born considered that it was a sin even to look at the lower caste people. Basava cognized and recognized that the caste-based discrimination was the root cause of all ills plaguing the society. Hence, he loudly condemned, with all the force and power he could summon, the inequalities and injustices based on social status, birth, wealth, position, profession, etc. He opened the doors that were closed by the privileged class practicing the Vedic philosophy. He proclaimed the dignity of labor and equality of all professions with his statement of Kayaka is Worship [2]; meaning all professions are equal. It also suggested that when a person is engaged in his honest labor, he/she may even forgo worshipping his/her God [4]. As an adjunct to this, he introduced another lofty notion the concept of Dasoha (service/sharing). He coupled the two together by saying that only honestly earned money is fit for dasoha. Illbegotten wealth is unfit for sharing or charitable causes [6]. Prior to the arrival of the sharanas like Basava on the scene, the three R s were the monopoly and privileged possession of the upper class of the society. Basava denounced the notion that only the high born were privileged to read the scriptures. He socialized with all sections of the community, even with those who were consigned to servitude and menial work. He announced that all are equal in the eyes of God. Religious Revolution: The priestly class was bleeding the community in the name of God and religion by pronouncing that God created the upper class and thus giving rise to blind beliefs, fear of retribution and punishment from Heaven in the minds of simple minded laymen. Unfortunately, these notions had been passed on from generation to generation and the upper class had thus managed to keep the laymen in darkness, ignorance and uneducated. The lower caste folks were not permitted to enter the temples leave aside reading the scriptures. When Basava arrived in King Bijjala s court after more than 12 years of intense study at Koodala Sangama, he realized the ghastly treatment meted out to the lower caste people and decided to change the scenery. He began to assure the low caste folks God is not enamored by the temple noise; neither is He pleased by the reading of Vedic scriptures. He asked the folks where is the need to go the temple to worship the human sculptured stone statue. He told folks that one does not necessarily have to go to the temple to worship, for one can worship the God seated in the soul inside one s own body. He described the body as the temple itself. To quote his most popular vachana: The rich build temple, what could a poor person like me build? My legs are pillars, my body the temple; my head the golden pinnacle; Oh! Koodala Sangama Deva,----. He was joined, on this score, by other 12 th century sharanas. Hearken what Allam Prabhu says: "When the body is the temple, why do we need a separate temple, Oh! Guheshvara? Thus, Basava brought the temple to the palm of the faithful laymen in the form of the Linga, which became the greatest equalizer of men and women, the rich and the poor and the high and the low. (Continued on page 20)
Page : 20 S H A R A N A P H I L O S O P H Y (Continued from page 19) Literary Revolution: Until the sharanas arrival in Kalyana, the priestly society did not permit the lower class folks to read the Holy Scriptures, for, they were all written in Sanskrit, the language of the priestly class and the laymen were prohibited from learning this language. The 12 th century sharanas totally changed this blind belief that only the high born were qualified to read the Vedas and other scriptures by writing lofty philosophical thoughts in the vernacular language and to expound what they had personally experienced in novel vernacular compositions called the Vachanas, the pithy sayings. These vachanas came not from the head, but sprang up from the heart and went straight to the heart. As Basava said - --I sing as I please Oh! Koodala Sangama Deva [6a]. As Basava has described the vachanas are bitter to the lips, sweet to stomach; Koodala Sangama Deva s sharanas vachanas are like partaking bevu (bitter leaves) [6b]. Since these writings reflected the Veerashaiva way of life, they have come to be recognized, regarded and respected as the scriptures - vachanashastra of the Veerashaiva religion. The vachana compositors who came from all walks of life have received national (India) [7, 8, 9] and international [10, 11] attention and acclaim for their deep mystical, philosophical and rational implications and thoughts. The Basava Samiti, Bengaluru (India) has taken up the task of translating and compiling about 21,000 of these into 15 volumes. Thus, the vachana literature has blazed a novel literary style hither-to-before unknown and unique in the annals of the literary firmament of the world. Economic Revolution: After paying attention to the greatest social scourge and injustice of caste based discrimination, Basava set his sight on the second most social affliction of the haves and the have-nots, namely social inequalities between the rich and the poor. To address this problem, Basava and his contemporary sharanas proposed a revolution in economics built on the four pillars of equality, fraternity, liberty and dignity of labor. By conceiving and creating a community based on the foundation of these noble corner- stones, they laid a strong foundation that had stood strong for more than 8 Centuries. The genius of Basava lies in linking divinity and dignity of labor (kayaka) to usher in economic independence and a homogenous society bereft of begging and violence. Dasoha and Kayaka as enunciated by the sharanas ensured overall harmony, peace, prosperity and economic independence, Summary: At the beginning of this write-up two words, namely Revolution and Evolution, were mentioned. Basava s 12th century dream of transforming the country into 'Kailas' has just remained as a sweet dream; just as the dream of the 19th century dynamic thinker-writer, Friedrich Nietzsche s dream of super human beings to come; just as the evolutionary vision of super human beings envisaged by the 20th century great Indian mystic philosopher, Sri Aurobindo; and just as 21st Century Eckhart Tolle s words of the waiting in the wings of the super human beings. Basava s revolution of Kalyana, based on the time scale and span and prevailing situations, appears to be an evolutionary process, after all. Dr. S.
