We miss few recent executive committee members who had to leave because of moving away from South Wales (Dr A Haldar, Mrs Ila Haldar, Nupur Ganguly and Mrs Roma Choudhury) and Mr S Bhowmick for personal reasons.we like to see them in all our future festivals and seek their continued support as always. Chairman s report, 2006 The magical season of Sarat has arrived with special festivity in the air, we recall the familiar rhythm of Dhak & Kansi; time to congregate with friends and family to celebrate Akal Bodhan, the celebration of Durga Puja. These Puja festivals would give the young a flavour of tradition of the subcontinent. Let s join our hands together to celebrate Durga Puja from 28 th of September to 2 nd of October. On behalf of the Wales Puja Committee I would like to welcome you all in our 34 th annual 5-day event of Durga Puja, followed by Kali Puja & Diwali festival. These festivities have been enjoyable because of the relentless effort made by the committee members and by your participation during each event. We hope you will continue to support us each day of the festival. We have been fortunate for a number of years to celebrate our Puja festival due to continued support from the committee of the Penyrheol community centre. We would like to convey our sincere thanks to all those who are involved in the organisation. The Welsh Puja Committee have been blessed with dedicated devotees, our three priests Dr Acharya, Mr Misra, & Mr Chatterjee, we are eternally grateful for their continued support in our Puja festival. There are many people to thank for their individual effort to sustain the diverse activity of the WPC. This summer we took part in the Cardiff festival by supporting the birthday centenary of Rabindranath Tagore & Kaji Najrul Islam in the Millennium centre, in Cardiff Bay. Finally, my sincere thanks to all members of the Puja committee for their commitment and support. Dr Sakti Guha-Niyogi
Secretary s Report It has only been two years since I officially became a member of the Wales Puja Committee (WPC) and only several months since I became the Secretary of the WPC, but I have always attended the religious and cultural festivals organised by the WPC. For us youngsters, it is always a joyful time to attend the various Pujas and cultural functions. Once again this year WPC will celebrate Durga Puja, Kali Puja, Diwali and Saraswati Puja. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dedication that is put into organizing these events. It is the not just the WPC members who are committed to it but also the people who attends these events and helps to prepare and serve the food, the people who perform on stage and who do other duties which have not been mentioned that make events so memorable. And for this reason we as a committee have been able to organise big events like the 2003 and 2005 Cardiff Mela, which were both huge successes. We will celebrate this year s Durga Puja festival at Penyrheol community centre at Caerphilly together and I take this opportunity to cordially invite you, your family and friends to attend the festival for four days to make it a truly memorable occasion. I wish to thank our priests, Dr. Acharya, Mr. Misra, and Mr. Chatterjee, members of the Puja committee and the Management of Penyrheol community centre for their tremendous support to make these festivals such a success. Finally, I thank all the Pharmaceutical companies and other sponsors for all the financial support they have provided us. Plus I would like to thank Mr. Peter Goodridge in helping with the logistics of the Protima and Mr Kar for the safe keeping of the Protima. Looking forward to see you all. Best wishes to you all, Subho Bijoya and Dashera. Kinshuk Nath

Dear friends, MESSAGE FROM NEW TREASURER As you can see in spite of a surplus of for the year our bank balance is all time low at and there are few points I like to mention as new treasurer: Our Donations are constant over the years when on the other hand expenses have gone up. We are spending more during Diwali function and last year Diwali itself had a deficit of around This is not sustainable and may be we need to approach this event in a different way. We also became involved in many other events last year and this year mainly Mela 2005 and Rabindra / Nazrul Jayanti 2006 in Millennium centre, Cardiff. These events have costed us some money, albeit small in relation to our profile and standing as an organisation in multicultural community of Cardiff and South Wales. I will appeal to everyone who supports our event to donate this year generously and all Executive committee members to make sure our expenses are kept tight and any wastage is prevented. Best wishes and happy Puja & Diwali to you all. Sandip Raha LIGHTER MOMENTS The results of a study About 85% of women are responsible for cooking the family dinner, and 84% wish they didn't have to. Placing your order A friend and I were standing in line at a fast-food restaurant, waiting to place our order. There was a big sign posted. "No bills larger than $20 will be accepted." The woman in front of us, pointing to the sign, remarked, "Believe me, if I HAD a bill larger than $20, I wouldn't be eating here." Food Receipes "The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for 30 years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found." --Sam Levinson "This recipe is certainly silly. It says to separate two eggs, but it doesn't say how far to separate them." -- Gracie Allen

Decoding Tara! Durga, the Hindu Goddess is worshipped in nine other forms Parvati, Amba, Chandika, Bhavani, Kali, Tara, Ambika, Annapurna and Shakti. Durga is the wife and consort of Lord Shiva and resides in the Himalaya. αβχδεφγηχχδε The novel The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown is an exhilaratingly brainy thriller. It has sold 30 million copies world-wide and few more millions have seen the recently released Hollywood movie by the same name. A curator of the Paris famous Louvre has been murdered. Police has found a series of baffling codes near the dead body. The protagonists start to sort through the bizarre riddles. The trail leads to the works of Leonardo Da Vinci, which in turn leads them to a mystery, delving into the pre-history and history, surrounding the birth of Christ, the Christianity, Mary Magdalene, the secret organisations The Priory of Sion and The Opus Dei, The Holy Grail and the Grail s inherent fascination by the people over the centuries since Christ s crucifixion. The novel draws heavily on the sacred feminine, goddess iconology, paganism, and feminine deities in the prechristian era and wonderfully webs an aura about the time when paganism prevailed. Through his mystery-solving skills, Dan Brown presented a collage of fascinating insight into the pre-history s matriarchal paganism. The members of The Priory of Sion believed in the tradition of goddess worship and they believed that powerful men in the early Christian Church conned the world by propagating lies that devalued the female, particularly Mary Magdalene. The Priory believed that the Roman Emperor Constantine successfully converted the world from matriarchal paganism to patriarchal Christianity, obliterating the goddess from modern religion for ever. Or was it? This intriguing experience from the book inspired me into thinking of another world nearer to my heart, that s of Hinduism, who have preserved the rites of matriarchal idolatry ( and not paganism, which is derogatory) for centuries. Moreover, there was presence of mother goddess in every corner of the world and in every ancient civilisation. The Hindu Pantheon is filled with mother goddesses who have been worshiped by the millions over the centuries within a civilisation which developed along the bank of the river Sindh (Persian called it Hind and hence the misnomer). As I started scraping through the pages (internet based!) of the pre-history, I stumbled upon a fascinating saga surrounding goddess Tara or as aptly known to us as Durga. Tara is the feminine goddess archetype in Hindu mythology. The ancient goddess Tara had many gifts to share with contemporary women. In later Hindu scriptures, she is depicted as one of the ten major (see above) aspects of the divine feminine Principle, a loving manifestation in contrast to the fiercesome Kali. Typically Tara is seen as a slender and beautiful woman of white complexion, long golden hair and blue eyes. In Hindu mythology, Tara was the wife of Brihaspati, the planet Jupiter. Soma, the moon, lusted after Tara and abducted her from Brihaspati. The gods rallied against Soma, who called on the asuras to be his allies, and a mighty war erupted. The supreme god Brahma tried to intervene. Soma listened and freed his captive. Tara returned to her husband, but she was pregnant, and would not say who the father was. Brihaspati refused to accept her until the child was born. The child was born instantly. He was brimming with power and beauty, and both Soma and Brihaspati back claimed the child as his own son. The boy became tired of the bickering over him, and was ready to utter a curse, but Brahma once again came to the rescue. He gently asked Tara who the father was. Tara confessed that it was Soma. Soma welcomed his son and named him Budha, who became the planet Mercury. As per oral tradition and legend, the origin of Tara begins with the churning of the ocean. Shiva drank the poison that was created from the churning of the ocean, thus saving the world from destruction, but has fallen unconscious under its powerful effect. Tara appears and takes Shiva on her lap. She suckles him, the milk from her breasts countering the
poison, he recovers. This myth is reminiscent of the one in which Shiva stops the rampaging Kali by becoming an infant. Seeing the child, Kali s maternal instinct comes to the fore, and she becomes quiet and nurses the infant Shiva. Om Tare Tuttare Ture Svaha Tara, I Praise you! In all your forms I call you In mainstream Hinduism today, Tara is considered to be one of countless forms of Kali and has little unique significance. There was a time, however, when She had prominence in the Hindu pantheon as a distinct and beloved mother goddess. From the viewpoint of historical Hinduism, Tara originally appeared as a manifestation of Kali (Durga/Parvati) and only emerged as a distinct deity in the 2nd century. In the 12th century, Moslem invasions of India put an end to Tara worship. The beautiful goddess Tara, Pre-Vedic savior goddess, whose name means 'Star' - originated in India but her many representations spread from Ireland to Indonesia under many different names. An annual ancient festival at Athens was named Taramata. In the west, Druids and the Celts of Ireland called their mother goddess Tara. The Hill of Tara, located 48 km northwest of Dublin, is one of Ireland's most important cultural icons. Dating back more than 5000 years to the neolithic age, Tara is known in both myth and history as the traditional seat of the High Kings of Ireland. Many Irish girls have their first name as Tara. The vibrations of the name Tara can be found in other cultures too. In Latin we find Terra, mother earth. An ancient saga of Finland said to be 5 million years old speaks of Tar, women of wisdom. An ancient tribe of indigenous peoples in the South American jungles call their goddess, Tarahumara. Adopted by Buddhism from Hinduism by the 3rd century B.C., Tara appears in Buddhism, Jainism, and particularly, in Tibetan Lamaism, as a complex array of manifestations: goddess of ascetism and mysticism, mother creator, protectress of all humans as they cross the sea of life. It is important to remember that in Buddhism, the male energy is potential only - latent and inactive. It is the female energy that activates this potential into movement and creativity. Today She is the adored as a compassionate mother of the native peoples of Tibet, Nepal, and much of Southeast Asia. Tara's greatest enduring impact has been in Tibet, where by the 11th century devotion to Her was widespread. Tibetans themselves disagree about Her origins. Some say She was originally Hindu; some say Tibetan. With the 20th-century exile of Tibetan religious men and women from their homelands, Tibetan Buddhism has become a worldwide phenomenon and Tara, a goddess beyond borders. I conclude this fascinating tale inspired by Dan Brown s book into the feminine presence of god in the ancient time by mentioning another name that is of Shekina. In Hebrew meaning dwelling place. Goddess Shekina is the Jewish Cabalist version of the Hindu Shakti. Sexual union with her counterpart is believed to maintain life in the Universe. The union was symbolized by the Tantric mandala in two triangles superimposed on each other Shakti (the downward pointing triangle) and Shiva (the upward pointing triangle). The superimposed triangles form the hexagram which came to be known famously as the Star of David. The symbol was introduced into Judaism via the Tantric influence in the medieval time. Interestingly, this aspect of the famous hexagram the Star of David did not escape Dan Brown s eyes while decoding the Da Vinci Code in his novel. By Dr Ranjit Sinha-Ray
Cardiff then (2002), London now (2006) An 18-ft-high and 24-ft-wide ekchala idol of Durga with her children has slowly taken shape in England this autumn. On August 10, Ruby Palchoudhury of Crafts Council of West Bengal arrived at London with a group of artisans for a unique demonstration cum workshop of traditional crafts, entitled Voices of Bengal, scheduled to start from August 12 and continue till September 25 at the British Museum. The giant idol will be made on the spot by national award-winning craftsman Nemai Chandra Pal of Krishnagar. We have supplied many such traditional idols to museums in Boston and Scotland. But those were below eight ft, so this one will be quite special, said Palchoudhury. The workshop will cover every aspect of the idol-making. It will include the traditional rituals performed by artisans before starting on the bamboo armature or drawing the eyes of the goddess. Making of Durga idols is quite a unique process. You won t find any other deity being made out of biodegradable material. So, Pal will be demonstrating the entire process. The goddess will wear the gorgeous daker saaj crown and traditional jewellery made out of foil and beads, explained Palchoudhury. In tandem with the idol-making will be traditional crafts workshops for children from more than 100 schools. I have heard that scores of them have already registered, said Palchoudhury. Modhu Pal will teach students to make pith flowers and birds. They will also learn to make tal patar shepais (palm-leaf stick puppets) and draw patachitras. Patua Gurupada Chitrakar will guide them and sing agomoni songs. Gurupada will also draw the chalchitra of the goddess. Dhakis will drum up the sharadiya mood from September 3. After September 25, the idol will be handed over to the local Bengali association for the puja rituals and immersion in Thames. From The Telegraph, Kolkata First Durga Puja in Wales 1972
Are You an Indian??? Check it out...you are an Indian if... You love to argue ( The Argumentative Indian Amartya Sen). You try and reuse gift wrappers, gift boxes, and of course aluminium foil. You try to eject food particles from between your teeth by pressing your tongue against them and making a peculiar noise like - tschick, tschick, tschick. You are standing next to the two largest size suitcases at the airport. You arrive one or two hours late to a party and think it s normal. You recycle wedding gifts. You name your children in rhythms (example: Honey & Money, Sita & Gita, Ram & Shyam). All your children have pet names, which sound nowhere close to their real names. You load up the family car with as many people as possible. You use plastic to cover anything new in your house. Your parents tell you to care what your friends think, but they won t let you do certain things because of what the other Uncles & Aunties will think. You buy and display crockery, which is for special occasions, which never happen. You have a vinyl table cloth on your kitchen table. You use grocery bags to hold garbage. You keep leftover food in your fridge in as many numbers of bowls as possible. You fight over who pays the dinner bill. You majored in engineering, medicine or law and now.are after software and only software, no matter which field you belong to. You don t use measuring cups when cooking. You never learnt how to stand in a queue. You can only travel if there are 5 persons at least to see you off or receive you whether you are travelling by bus, train or plane. You only make long distance calls after 11 p.m. If you don t live at home, when your parent calls, they ask if you have eaten, even if it s midnight. You call an elder person you never met uncle. When your parents meet strangers and talk for a few minutes, you discover you re talking to a distant cousin. Your parents don t realise phone connections to foreign countries have improved in the last two decades, & still scream at the top their lungs when making foreign calls. You have bed sheets on your sofas so as to keep them from getting dirty. When dining out, you think Rs 10 is enough of a tip. It s embarrassing if your wedding has less than 600 people. You list your daughter as fair & slim in the matrimonial no matter what she looks like. You treat the NRI persons (especially from America) as if they are the only persons living in this world (including you). You have drinking glasses made of steel. You have mastered the art of bargaining in shopping. Compiled by Dr Ranjit Sinha-Ray

Lage Raho Munnabhai Bole to hats off to Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani for making a film that is more than just a rip-roaring comedy. Lage Raho Munnabhai makes you laugh, makes you cry and, parallel to all the entertainment, it gives a message that sticks in the mind. To say it in Munnabhai s lingo it creates chemical locha in the brain. It is next to impossible not to like Munnabhai and his sidekick Circuit in their second innings. Almost three years after the loveable duo cured the incurable in Munnabhai MBBS, the street-savvy taporis find themselves face to face with Mahatma Gandhi s ideology in Lage Raho Munnabhai. As Munna the goon for whom breaking bones and abducting people is the way of life comes face to face with Bapu, he discovers that it takes more courage to turn the other cheek than to hit back. Munna discovers that nothing works like compassion and non-violence. Following Mahatma Gandhi s way, Munna not only triumphs over his enemies, but he also wins the love of the woman he so very longs for. Lage Raho Munnabhai is a film that keeps you riveted to the screen from the very opening reels to its conclusion. The most exceptional thing about the film is the way it blends comedy with emotional moments. To sum it up, Lage Raho Munnabhai is one of the best movies to have come out of Bollywood this year. The script is exceptionally well written by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi. The background music complements the screenplay and the songs are not the least intrusive. Rajkumar Hirani s direction yokes together all the elements of movie-making into a cohesive, meaningful and, above all, entertaining package called Lage Raho Munnabhai. The film is a top-notch entertainer. There is not a single dull moment in it. A must-watch. Carry on forever, Munnabhai. Adapted from Apunkachoice.com Love & Limits Love has no boundaries, Or so I ve been told, But how could love be this bold? There were no lectures I attended, No exams I had to pass, So how was it that I was in love at last? It tore at my thoughts, How did this occur? It happened so suddenly, It was all so obscure, And so I came to terms, This was all a mistake I had ordered salad, This was steak on my plate, As the emotions passed, My stop arrived I left the train, She stayed behind Compiled By Dr Angshu Mukherjee B & R GARAGES South Wales leading Independent
