Editorial April is the month of celebrations lined up one after the other. To begin with, we have 'Janm Kalyanak' the birth anniversary of Lord Simandhar Swami and Lord Hanuman followed by 'Kevalgnan Kalyanak' which marks the celebration of absolute enlightenment of Lord Simandhar Swami. And finally we have 'Mahavir Jayanti' which marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jains. Wouldn't it be right to state that April is truly a month of holiness? The events in the lives of these great souls bear testimony to their amazing virtues. The compassion and humility of Lord Mahavira as well as the celibacy and dedication of Lord Hanuman are amongst a few of their many unique virtues. I am confident that reading about their virtues, reflecting over them and finally imbibing them shall surely act as milestones on our journey to being better human beings. - Dimple Mehta. 4 Gnani with Youth Dada s Book Excerpt uestioner : There is this Qone thing that I thoroughly disapprove and that is idol worship. Why should we bathe the idol? After all it is a non living thing! Instead, why not help those who are truly in need and are struggling to earn enough for just two square meals a day? We waste hours after such rituals which are completely illogical! Why should we do all this? 04 April 2015 Pujyashri : There is a reason behind it. Whose idols are they? They are of Lord Mahavira, Lord Krishna or Simandhar S w a m i. T h e y h a v e b e e n p r e s e n t somewhere at some point of time. And in what state? The state of knowledge Absolute Knowledge. So while reminiscing them we erect a statue. Suppose you are looking at your mom's picture and somebody says, This is just a piece of paper, why are you gazing at it? Wouldn't you immediately say, But, it's my mom? Now since it's your mom's picture even though it's just a piece of paper, wouldn't it give you happiness just as you look at it? So is this picture a piece of paper or your mom? Now if I were to tell you to throw it or tear it off what would you say? No, no it's my mom. Wouldn't you say that? Obviously for you

it's your mom's picture but for me it's mere paper. So why would you hold on to a piece of paper? Similarly those you consider non living idols, are also present somewhere. Questioner : Yes, that's true! Pujyashri : Besides, even if it's a small picture you would show it saying, Look, this is my mom and this is my dad. This picture is of the days when I was a kid. Wouldn't you keep it carefully? Questioner : Yes, I would! Pujyashri : Now that snap too is basically just like an idol. It s akin to an idol. But we have a lot of memories attached to it. And if I were to tell you to throw away these papers, you would disapprove and say, But they hold many pleasant memories. They are pictures of my parents. Looking at the picture of our departed grandparents also brings back fond memories of their helpful nature and how they had guided and helped us. Similarly, these Gods too are present somewhere and if we reminisce them our vibes reach them wherever they might be. And what do they possess? They have knowledge, bliss. So we too shall be bestowed with knowledge and bliss. Now looking at the other aspect, if we pray to these idols, we shall be blessed with material happiness because we are doing so out of our sincere faith in them. So although we pray to the idol, since we do so with faith it is our faith which gives us rewards. So just by sitting in front of these idols and watching them we can attain the state of non attachment (vitragta) and be free from passion (nirvikar). The sense of devotion shall arise merely by viewing (darshan) the Lord. And so we should always have devotion for the Lord. Do you understand? Akram Youth 05

STORY Essence Of Devotion Atithi and Biswas were blessed with a d a u g h t e r n a m e d B h a k t i. S h e possessed virtues true to her name. Besides being a topper in school, she was a loner of sorts and instead of indulging in gossip and chatting with friends, she would spend most of her time praying and chanting devotional songs in praise of the Lord. Although amazed, her parents were extremely pleased with this attitude of hers. Days turned into years and soon Bhakti entered her teens and now was a student of class VIII. One day their teacher gave the class an assignment to write an essay on their hero. Anjali, another student asked the teacher, Vineeta Ma'am, can I write an essay on Kiran Bedi? I am a true fan of hers. But she being a female, can I count her as my hero? Vineeta Ma'am replied with a smile, It doesn't matter whether your idol is a male or a female. It can be any person irrespective of gender f r o m w h o m y o u d e r i v e inspiration and strength. All the students began thinking about the various parameters and discussed the finer points with their teacher. Vineeta Ma'am heard them patiently and gave each of them proper guidance. Bhakti was also lost in deep thoughts as she wondered who could be her role model. Soon the bell rang and before the class dispersed for the day Vineeta Ma'am reminded the students saying, Please don't write this essay for the sake of completing the assignment. Try to be true to yourself and write only about that particular character whom you deem fit enough to be your hero. And in case you have any queries, please feel free to contact 06 April 2015

me. Later in the evening on her way to the temple, Bhakti was completely engrossed in thoughts about whom she could consider her role model. Going by her habit of discussing her issues with the idol in the temple, she shut her eyes and asked the Lord, Oh God, please guide me. You are the one who inspires me. Who else can I consider my hero? Feeling content at having told her Lord about it she started evaluating things in proper perspective thinking, 'I am not interested in the material world like others so none of the celebrities can be my hero. What I like most is to pray, so I would like to emulate a true devotee and imbibe the virtues of those who had surrendered their all in devotion and service of the Lord. Their supreme devotion can become a guiding force for me.' Then as she opened her eyes, her gaze fell on the idol of Lord Krishna and she realised she had found the answer she was looking for. 'Yes! It has to be the person who has spent his or her life in devotion of the Lord. My idol shall be the one who shall inspire me through my life.' On getting this lead she was truly relieved. She closed her eyes again and the picture of Meerabai appeared in her mind. She exclaimed, Meerabai! Yes, it has to be Meerabai! Taking a deep breath she thought, 'Meerabai spent her entire life in devotion of Lord Krishna. She surrendered her every breath in praise of the Lord.' Then she began recalling the names of other such devotees and remembered having read of Narsinh Mehta and Lord Hanuman too who had dedicated their entire lives in devotion of Lord Krishna and Lord Rama. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she was overcome with emotions thinking about such blessed souls. She bowed to each of them in appreciation. Back home, she opened her notebook and wrote, Meerabai as the title of her essay on 'My Hero'. Next day as Vineeta Ma'am inquired on the progress they had made, Bhakti was first to raise her hand and said with a huge smile playing on her face, Ma'am, Meerabai is my role model. Not completely surprised as she was expecting something different from Bhakti she said, Oh great! Well I thought your hero must be someone special, but Meerabai is truly an amazing choice. How did you think of her? Justifying her choice Bhakti said, She attracts me a lot for many reasons. She spent her whole life in devotion of Lord Krishna. She renounced all material pleasures, her kingdom, her palace and all other luxuries even when the Lord himself was not present physically. Her dedication to the Lord was such that she did not even bother to think about her own self as to where she would stay, what she would eat and how she would survive. Although she faced lots of difficulties and sufferings, she remained firm. Prayer and devotion for Lord Krishna was of prime importance to her despite all hardships. Even when commanded by the 'Rana' (King) to drink poison, she drank it willingly but remained firm in her conviction. Such was her sincerity and devotion towards the Lord that she happily put her life at stake but did not flinch from her commitment of worship. These are the rare qualities of a true devotee that attract me. Vineeta Ma'am was truly impressed by the detailed explanation but she still had her doubts and she asked, What is the outcome of such devotion? It might have been possible in that era but now in the present t i m e s w h e r e c a n o n e f i n d s u c h a n inspirational figure for whom one can devote one's life? Bhakti was lost in thoughts again. Now let's see what Dadashri has to say.. Akram Youth 07

Gnani's Scientific Solution Q u e s t i o n e r : W h o s t a n d s responsible for those following the path of devotion (Bhakti)? Is it God? Dadashri: Yes! Now what can be termed as ultimate devotion? It is that of a true devotee, someone like Narsinh Mehta or Meerabai. Their devotion can be termed as indirect worship since they were not worshipping their true self, 'the soul'. Yet it was true devotion, one that would lead to realisation of the self. Who can be called a true devotee? A true devotee is one who does not have any 'sankalp vikalp'. He leaves everything to the will of God. Whereas generally we find people who tend to be happy on occasions such as their child's wedding, or a birth in the family. They even distribute sweets claiming that they themselves were responsible for those acts. But when the child passes away they put the blame on God for the misery that has befallen them. While a true devotee reacts in the same vein in both the circumstances and relies totally on the Lord saying, Lord it is your prestige which is at stake. Why should I worry about anything? This is called actual surrender and devotion. Questioner: Is it okay if we dedicate ourselves completely and selflessly to a 'Sadguru' (Master)? D a d a s h r i : O h y e s, t h a t i s perfectly fine. But total surrender is required. It should be absolute - that of mind, body and speech. Questioner: Will it be treated as absolute surrender if the same is directed towards deities or saints of yester-years; those who are not physically present anymore? Can we make progress thus or is a living master 08 April 2015 PROBLEM SOLUTION imperative? Dadashri: Such indirect worship will help you progress but one who is present shall help you attain salvation. The result of indirect worship and devotion shall be progress, whereas salvation is not possible without the grace of the living one (pratyaksh). We need not do anything after surrendering and dedicating ourselves. Just like a new born baby which does not need to do anything, we too do not have to do anything after dedicating ourselves. The law is such that when you surrender your whole being including your intellect to your Master, you shall gain all the virtues of the Master. Say for example, there are two tanks. One is filled with water and the other is empty. If we connect both of them with a pipe, then the water will flow from one tank to the other until it levels out in both the tanks. The same holds true for those who dedicate and surrender their entire being. The intent of complete surrender is devotion. Surrendering knowingly is a very high state of devotion but then surrendering unknowingly too can be termed as devotion. To whom should we surrender and dedicate ourselves? Well, it should be towards the one who is ready to take complete responsibility. The responsibility to help us attain ultimate salvation. We should surrender to the one who is capable of doing so. We should dedicate ourselves to the one who has such greatness, else our efforts shall be not be worth the cause.

Tirthankara also called Jina ( Victor ), in Jainism, is a saviour who has succeeded in crossing over life s stream of rebirths and has made a path for others to follow. The Tirthankaras (fully enlightened beings) are worshipped as the supreme beings in this world because they acquire infinite knowledge, perception, purity of conduct and power by destroying the four vitiating karmas at spiritual level. This gives rise to unique attributes in them, spiritual and physical. All Tirthankaras are born as human beings but they have attained a state of enlightenment through self realization. Tirthankaras are also known as Arihants or Jinas. Arihant - One who destroys his inner enemies (kashays) Tyäg (Renunciation) Kshamä (Forgiveness) Märdava (Humility) Ärjava (Straightforwardness) Shaucha (Contentment - absence of greed) Äkinchan (Non-possessiveness) Sanyam (Self-control) Brahmacharya (Celibacy) 12 April 2015

Jina - One who conquers his inner enemies like anger, greed, passion, ego, etc. The followers of Jina are known as Jains. When a Tirthankara s soul is conceived, his mother sees fourteen dreams. A Tirthankara s soul, even while in mother s womb, has three types of knowledge namely Matignan, Shrutgnan, and Avadhignan. One year before the time of renunciation, a group of celestial angels come to pay homage to the future Tirthankara. They remind him that the time to renounce the world is arriving. When a Tirthankara renounces the worldly life, he attains Manahparyavgnan, the fourth type of the knowledge, which enables him to read people s thoughts. Satya (Truth) Präyashchitta (Repentance or remorse) Vinay (Humility, Respect for others) Veyävachcham (Selfless service to monks, nuns and needy) Swädhyäy (Study of religious scriptures) Dhyäna (Meditation) Käyotsarga (Giving up physical activities and staying absorbed in the soul) Tapa (Austerities) Akram Youth 13

Plants Eat's from Soil & they gain energy from soil Worns convert excereta to soil Humans Eat Plants/ Vegetables & they get Energy Author : Ayush Mehta Excreta is Eaten by Worms & Bacteria Humans Excrete waste The Knowledge Encyclopedia See, it's all a waste of time. No, it isn't. It's just blind faith. Of course not, its devotion. How can an idol be of any help? But, it's your faith that helps you. Oh, that's all. OMG Oh My God!! Friends, you must be wondering what this conversation is all about. This is how it started It was well past midnight. We were sipping tea at our regular hangout after watching a movie which claimed that there is nothing like God and going to temples and worshipping idols are sheer waste of time. The debate had split our group in two. The discussion that had begun on a light vein was now taking a serious mode and arguments coming from both the sides sounded convincing. Even after about 30 minutes into the argument none was ready to back off. That is when I called it quits asking the guys to chill. Driving back home as scenes of the movie flashed in my mind, the message seemed all the more convincing. I just couldn't sleep as the arguments and counter arguments replayed incessantly in my mind. Not that I am an atheist, but I tend to have a logical mindset. Desperate to find the truth I decided to fall back on my most trusted philosopher and guide, none other than Dada Bhagwan. Friends, this is a little conversation that I came across in one of Dadashri's book which seemed fairly convincing Questioner: One saint says that we should not depend upon inert things such as photographs or idols. He said we should take support of the one who is living and present. 14 April 2015

Dadashri: He is right. If you find a living guru who is good, then you will find satisfaction. But until you find such a guru, you should do 'darshan' of the 'murti'. Worshipping the 'murti' is a stepping towards spiritual progress. Do not let go of it. Until you attain the 'amurta' (the Soul), do not let go of the 'murti.' With this new clarity I decided to delve deeper into what else Dadashri might have said on this burning issue. And so I continued searching through other books. Amazed at Dadashri's wisdom and clarity of thought I went on reading until almost dawn. I am posting below the gist of the matter in Dadashri's own words for all, which I feel shall open new avenues for all to think about. Temple is the greatest science of Hindustan. Temples are not for gaining pride and fame for one's self but they are for achieving liberation through proper understanding. People will worship and get some benefit if temples are present and will stop going in the wrong direction. It is the best form of indirect worship (paroksha bhakti) but only if one understands its subtle meaning. You can invite the Lord to reside only when you have a temple. Otherwise where will the Lord take residence? A floating or temporary place is of no use. Only when you have a fixed place can you invite the Lord. Why has an idol been placed? What is the intent (bhavna) behind it? It is 'Lord, you are the abode of eternal bliss and I have temporary happiness. I want eternal bliss.' The Lord is eternally blissful. Behold! Just look at him. He looks more attractive than any one of us despite being made of marble. You feel as if you do not want to leave Him or look away from Him. What does the idol of the Lord say when you are offering prayers to it? It says, 'All this is not mine. It belongs to Your Self only. So the idol returns all your prayers and offerings to your own Pure Soul. This is called indirect worship (paroksha bhakti). Friends, I was truly astounded by this logic of Dadashri. I leave it to you all to decide for yourselves as to which path you would like to tread on.bye for now. But before signing off I would like to share a couple of lines that made a huge impact on me Idols are necessary and so are temples. Idol worship is a spiritual science of India. Only if there is an idol will there be a temple and only if there is a temple will there be devotees. The Lord has said that as long as there is 'artadhyan.' (Adverse meditation occurring within one's relative self) and 'raudradhyan' (adverse meditation directed against other living beings), you should do darshan of an idol (murta) because until then you will not be able to 'see' the formless (amurta) one. You will not be able to see the 'Shuddhatma', the formless Lord within. Temple is the greatest science of Hindustan. Temples are not for gaining pride and fame for one's self, but they are for achieving liberation through proper understanding. Dadashri. Akram Youth 15

You can riends, most of us have read about FK a r n a b e i n g a d d r e s s e d a s 'daanveer Karna'. The instance below shall give us an insight about his exemplary style of donating. Once Krishna and Arjuna were walking towards a village when Arjuna pestered Krishna asking him why Karna should be considered a role model for all 'Danas' (donations) and not he. Krishna wanting to teach him a lesson snapped his fingers. The mountains beside the path they were walking on immediately turned to gold. Then Krishna said, "Arjuna, distribute these two mountains of gold amongst the villagers. Also you 16 April 2015 everything A Selfless Donor must see to it that you donate every bit of gold". Arjuna went to the village and proclaimed that he was going to donate gold to every villager and asked them to gather near the mountains. The villagers sang his praises and Arjuna walked towards the mountains with a puffed up chest. For two days and two nights Arjuna shovelled gold from the mountain making donations to each and every villager. But even after donating to each and every one of them, the mountainous heap of gold had hardly diminished. Most villagers would come back again and stand in queue within minutes. After a while, Arjuna started feeling exhausted. But not being able to let go of his ego he told Krishna he needed some rest before he could continue further. Then Krishna beckoned Karna saying, "You must donate every bit of these mountains Karna." Karna immediately called two villagers and said, "Do you see those two mountains? Those mountains of gold are yours to do as you please.

Saying so he walked away. Arjuna stood dumbfounded wondering why this thought had not occurred to him. Krishna then smiled mischievously saying, "Arjuna, subconsciously you yourself were attracted to the gold. You regretfully gave to each villager what you thought was a generous amount. Thus the amount of your donation to each villager was as per your thinking. While in the case of Karna, he holds no such reservations. Look at him walk away. Even after giving away a fortune, he doesn't expect people to sing his praises. He doesn't care whether they praise him or speak ill about him behind his back. That is the sign of a man already on the path of enlightenment". Well friends, you all might be thinking that such instances were possible only in those good old days, but wait read on before you come to any conclusion. This is about a Mr. Kalyanasundaram, the 'MAN OF THE MILLENIUM.' An epitaph of altruism, P Kalyanasundaram, has been conferred with the title of 'Man of Millennium' for being an example of exemplary saint-hood. The social worker from Tamil Nadu has rendered his flawless services to orphans and needy as he has donated his entire salary since the last thirty years. Kalyanasundaram has worked as a librarian for 30 years. He has not only donated his entire salary for the good cause but also contributed the sum of Rs.10 lakhs which was his entire pension, to the people in need. Sundaram enjoys enviable status of becoming the first person who has donated his entire earnings for a social cause. Recognizing his rich contribution, the US government honored him with the 'Man of Millennium' award. He received Rs 30 crores as award money, but moving on his charity path he donated the entire amount for the people in need. How he entered social service is an interesting story: During his college days the Indo-China war broke out and he decided to contribute his gold chain for the war fund. Akram Youth 17

Later, he met the editor of Ananda Vikatan and told him about his noble cause. To this the editor told him that he would write about him only when he would donate something from his earnings. Taking the editor's words as a challenge, Sundaram quietly went away. He vowed to live his life only for social welfare. Thus he remained a bachelor and dedicated his life to serve the society. Superstar Rajinikanth has adopted him as his father. United Nations Organization (UNO) has honored him as (one of the) Outstanding People of the 20th Century. 18 April 2015 Sundaram, a gold medalist in Library Science has Master's degree in Literature and History from Madras University, India. He received BAPASI award for best librarian in Other awards received by him include lifetime service award from Rotary International, 2011, and 'Best Librarian in India' award by Union Government. We cannot sustain ourselves, unless we contribute to the society in some way or the other. I strongly feel if even one person does his bit towards social good, there will be some change. P. Kalyansundaram.

Glimpses of Great Souls Lord Hanuman Dedication Duty Loyalty Devotion SincerityCelibacy Sri Hanuman, a great disciple of Sri Rama, is a symbol of devotion and dedication. Lord Hanumana is a provider of courage, hope, knowledge, intellect and devotion. Hanuman is in the form of 'Vaanar' (monkey). It will be good to know why the idols of Rudra are always reddish orange. According to a belief, once Goddess Sita was applying Sindoor (vermilion). Out of curiosity, Hanuman asked her the reason behind it. On this, she explained to him that she was doing so for the longevity of her husband s life. She also told Bajrangbali that the more Sindoor she will apply, the longer shall be the life of Lord Rama (her husband). As Hanuman was a great devotee of the Lord, he smeared Sindoor on his entire body to make Rama immortal. This is also one of the reasons why idols of Hanuman or Sankat Mochan are always smeared with Sindoor. Devotion: Lord Hanuman is the epitome of devotion and loyalty. His service to Lord Rama is truly incredible. The following instance depicts this virtue of Hanuman in a lucid manner. Hanuman was a loyal follower of Rama and worshipped him wholeheartedly. One day, Sita gave him a precious pearl necklace. Hanuman immediately broke the necklace and started looking at each pearl carefully. He glared at each pearl and threw them away one by one in disgust. Sita was surprised and asked him for an explanation. Hanuman explained that he was looking for Rama's image in the pearls. Hanuman believed that Rama was present everywhere and was disappointed that he could not find his image in the pearls. He declared that the pearls were just stones and pebbles and thus were worthless. When the people around him asked if Rama was present in Hanuman, Hanuman tore open his chest with his hands and everyone was amazed to see a brilliant image of Rama and Sita engraved in his heart. following this, people accepted that Hanuman was a true devotee of Rama. This is why he is also known as Bhakta Hanuman. Dedication: Hanuman had intense love for Lord Rama which can be considered from this particular instance. Once Hanuman 20 April 2015

was asked by Sri Rama, "How do you identify yourself with me?" Hanuman said: "Oh Lord, while I identify myself with my body, I am Thy servant. When I consider myself an individual soul, I am Thy part. But when I look upon myself as the spirit, I am one with Thee. This is my firm conviction." S incerity : Lord Hanuman's sincerity reflects the power of duty the power of trust the power of truth the power of faith and devotion the power of loyalty. Hanuman Chalisa: Is a poetic composition of the great saint Tulsidas. It is believed that Tulsidas composed Hanuman Chalisa in a state of Samadhi in a kumbh mela in Haridwar. Chalisa means forty and this famous composition has forty verses in praise of Lord Hanuman. The acts and deeds of Lord Hanuman are recalled in these verses to aid the devotee to meditate on virtuous and noble qualities. Akram Youth 21
