B h a k t i v e d a n ta S w a m i P r a b h u p ä d a October 2018 JHULAN YATRA BALARAMA PURNIMA _ LIFE IN MAYAPUR JHULAN YATRA A Festival of Sweetness For the last 33 years, an enthusiastic group of ISKCON Youth has worked together each year for an entire month before the annual Jhulan Yatra festival in Sridham Mayapur. In order to prepare for the festivities, these 54 dedicated servants and vonunteers of Sri Sri Radha Madhava work day and night to ensure that the Divine Couple and Their associates will be well served during the 5-day festival. The Jhulan Yatra team turn a dense forest of weeds and overgrown trees and plants into a magnificent flower grove decorated with winding pathways lit by lamps and fairy lights, colourfully lit waterfalls and ponds with fountains, blossoming flowers, trimmed bushes and multi-coloured lights. The breath-taking marvel of the grove is accompanied by an atmosphere surcharged with the boundless love and devotion of the Lord s devotees, making it the perfect place for Their Lordships to enjoy many wonderful pastimes together and to engage the devotees in Their loving devotional service. 1

Every afternoon for the duration of the festival, a small group of devotees decorate a beautiful palanquin to transport Sri Sri Radha Madhava to Their flower laden bower for Their evening pastimes.

These outfits are made entirely of flowers, and decorated with peacock feathers and multi-coloured pearls, gems and ribbons.

Devotees eagerly wait in long lines to get the opportunity to swing Their Lordships, and once the reception is done, devotees immediately rush in to swing the Lord of their hearts.

2 Every afternoon for the duration of the festival, a small group of devotees decorate a beautiful palanquin to transport Sri Sri Radha Madhava to Their flower laden bower for Their evening pastimes. It is also during this time that a different group of devotees make a brand new outfit for Their Lordships to wear when They go out for Their evening rendezvous. These outfits are made entirely of flowers, and decorated with peacock feathers and multi-coloured pearls, gems and ribbons. When Sri Sri Radha Madhava have donned Their flower outfits, They head out from the Sri Mayapur Candrodaya Mandir on the beautifully decorated palanquin to Their secluded kunja, which is located near the ISKCON Mayapur Goshala. The Divine Couple are taken with a grand procession, led by blissful singing and dancing. Once Sri Madhava and Srimati Radhika are comfortably seated on Their jewel-encrusted throne, They are given a wonderful reception and are offered various refreshments. Devotees eagerly wait in long lines to get the opportunity to swing Their Lordships, and once the reception is done, devotees immediately rush in to swing the Lord of their hearts. All throughout the festival, delicious prasadam is served to the devotees who have finished swinging the Lord. Over 17,500 people got to swing Their Lordships and take prasadam. For the duration of Sri Sri Radha Madhava s swinging pastimes, Their devotees worship Them with many sweet songs of glorification written by our previous acharyas, such as Srila Rupa Goswami, Krishna, Bhaktivinoda Thakura and others. The Lord is also entertained by a range of dances and dramatic reenactments of various pastimes, all performed by the devotees for 2 the pleasure of Their Lordships and Their devotees. To conclude the night s festivities, Sri Sri Radha Madhava are mounted on Their beautifully decorated palanquin and are taken to a small pukur, or pond, close to the entrance of Their kunja, and enjoy a display of lights on the water. Once the light show is finished, the Lord is then taken back to the temple, and is greeted with more displays of lights on the road, accompanied by the dramatic exhibition of devotees breathing fire. The procession is ecstatically tumultuous and is heard in all directions.

Thereafter, there is a Maha Arati and the distribution of the maha prasadam. Clay pots of various sizes are filled with sweet honey nectar and other delightful sweets and are strung up in the air. The devotees take turns to hit the pots while blindfolded, and once a pot is broken, the contents of the pot are distributed, another pot is strung up, and the devotees get ready for another round. _ Balarama Purnima Throughout the festival, Lord Balarama s favourite ambrosial drink is served out. Although not containing any intoxicants, the Varuni drink seems to have a similar effect on those who drink a lot of this honey flavoured drink. Celebrations continue later into the night with ecstatic kirtan. 3 3

4 THE NETWORKING TREE OF LORD CAITANYA Countless people come to ISKCON Mayapur from all over India and the world, and ISKCON Mayapur has a number of preaching endeavours to attract these people to Mayapur and to preach the science of Krishna consciousness to them. ISKCON Mayapur s preaching targets all people, both those from far away lands and those who reside within and near Mahaprabhu s own land. One of these preaching programs is the Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha program. Bhakti Vriksha preaching is a method derived from Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura s Sri Godruma Kalpatavi, and whose name comes from the Caitanya-caritamrta s description of the tree of devotional service, or bhakti-vriksha. Mayapur s Bhakti Vriksha is an initiative which preaches the teachings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu specifically to the local people in and around Nadia. Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha began on a very small scale as a local preaching program in Navadvipa. Devotees would simply drive to a nearby locality in Navadvipa and have lectures, kirtan, and prasadam distribution. Since then, it has expanded into a fullscale Bhakti Vriksha program and 4 now conducts a wide variety of preaching programs in Navadvipa and in the surrounding area, in places such as Krishnanagar, Shantipur, Dhubulia, Shyampur, Suvarna Vihar, Srirampur, Dharmada, Bardhaman, and Badkulla. The Bhakti Vriksha Department attracts people in a variety of ways. Often, the devotees do Nagar Sankirtan and arrange special programs known as Jivan-jignasa in which they have kirtan, present a slideshow, have a Questions and Answers session, and serve prasadam. Sometimes, they arrange special stage

5 programs in different places. The devotees rent an auditorium and many devotees from ISKCON Mayapur come to participate in the program. They perform dances, musical presentations, and dramas, and senior devotees speak. There is also kirtan and prasadam distribution. During the month of Kartik, the Bhakti Vriksha Department conducts Damodara Programs, in which attendees hear about Damodara lila and offer lamps. In 2016, the Damodara Programs were so successful that the Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha Department engaged over 100,000 people in offering lamps to the Lord. All of these programs are very effective for attracting the local people to become a part of Mayapur s Bhakti Vriksha. Those who are members of the Bhakti Vriksha program are enlivened in their Krishna consciousness in many ways. Each group meets weekly, and monthly they have larger gettogethers. The Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha Department organizes many different events for Bhakti Vriksha members to participate in, including Gita seminars, house programs, spiritual picnics, visits to Mayapur, book distribution, prasadam distribution, kirtan utsavs, and more. Participants are engaged in service in Sri Dham Mayapur on festivals such as Rama Navami, Sri Krishna Janmastami, and Nrisimha Caturdasi. They engage in vaishnava seva during Navadvipa Mandala Parikrama, serving refreshments to the devotees on parikrama as they pass through the Bhakti Vriksha members respective areas. Mayapur s Bhakti Vriksha team also arranges 5 for Bhakti Vriksha participants to visit holy places such as Kanai Natashala, Ekachakra, Ramakeli, Katwa, and others. In the year 2016 alone, the Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha Department organized almost two hundred events for members to participate in. Another unique way Mayapur Bhakti Vriksha encourages its members and attracts new Bhakti Vriksha members is by holding picnics on the different islands of Navadvipa Dham. Attendees are fed sumptuous prasadam, engage in kirtan, listen to classes, and participate in fun Krishna conscious games and contests. Attendees are requested to bring a friend along who is not already a Bhakti Vriksha member, so in addition to enlivening current Bhakti Vriksha members, these picnic programs also serve to attract new members. Mayapur s Bhakti Vriksha Department desires to engage local people of all varieties in the practice of Krishna consciousness. In some of the areas in and around Navadvipa Dham, the local population is not very literate; therefore,

They have special groups for members from these areas, known as Radha Madhava Bhakta Samaj groups, which have regular programs that facilitate members spiritual development despite their limited ability to read Srila Prabhupada s books. A key aspect of any Bhakti Vriksha program is its networking system, because once one Bhakti Vriksha group is established, its members are encouraged to start new Bhakti Vriksha groups, and thus the Bhakti Vriksha program expands exponentially. Although there are only ten devotees serving fulltime within Mayapur s Bhakti Vriksha Department, there are now thirty-eight Bhakti Vriksha groups and eight Radha Madhava Bhakta Samaj groups. Sri Dham Mayapur is the headquarters of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His preaching movement, and so Mayapur s Bhakti Vriksha program envisions that from this central hub, the Bhakti Vriksha network will continue to spread outward throughout all regions. In this way, people from many different areas will be connected to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His glorious and most merciful Dham.. 6

Life in Mayapur We (myself, my wife, and two daughters) moved to Mayapur in May 2011. Oftentimes devoteefriends from the West would ask if we would leave Mayapur and go back to the West.

What to speak of being in the Holy Dhama of Sridham Mayapur where advancement is thousands of times quicker? It s like a pressure cooker that cooks the dal quicker than an ordinary pot.

7 Life in Mayapur We (myself, my wife, and two daughters) moved to Mayapur in May Oftentimes devoteefriends from the West would ask if we would leave Mayapur and go back to the West. The answer is an unequivocal NO. Who wants to leave Mayapur? Why would we want to? It s the best place in the world. We get the madhurya (sweetness) of Vrndavan in addition to Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu s audarya (magnanimity). I heard a senior Vaisnava once say that just living in India, one makes spiritual advancement quicker than in the West. What to speak of being in the Holy Dhama of Sridham Mayapur where advancement is thousands of times quicker? It s like a pressure cooker that cooks the dal quicker than an ordinary pot. BUT, the intense pressure means that purification comes quicker... and it is more intense. Sridham Mayapur is the perfect place for bringing up a family. Children are given a rare opportunity to attend schools where there are Krsna Conscious teachers, a Krsna Conscious curriculum, devotee students, prasadam etc. In Sridham Mayapur, there is a festival every day. Outside Mayapur, the influence of material energy is quite heavy, especially on our children. After living in Mayapur for some time, we can very easily become complacent. My Guru Maharaj, HH Partha-sarathi Goswami, oftentimes reminds us of our extreme good fortune to be given the rare opportunity to live in Sridham Mayapur. He warned us about becoming overly familiar with the Dhama and the residents, and he gave us specific instructions whilst living in the Dhama. I will like to share some of these instructions with you since I m certain it will help you in your appreciation of Sridham Mayapur : 7 1 Daily recite Sri Navadvipastakam by Srila Rupa Goswami 2 Daily pay obeisances to the Dhama 3 Daily take the dust of the Dhama onto our heads 4 Daily taking drops of Ganga on our heads if we cannot bathe in her waters For now the above is pretty mechanical for me but I m praying to the Dhama that someday I will be more sincere in my attempt at the above. By the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and his followers, we have a very nice community of devotees where the centre are the presiding Authorities viz. Sri Sri Radha Madhava & Astasakhis,

Sri Sri Pancha-Tattva & Sri Sri Prahlad Nrsimha. We have the rare opportunity to be able to have Their darsan everyday how wonderful is that?

Although we may (and do) have our differences, the central goal is that we are all aspiring to stay here in Sridham Mayapur and develop our love for the Divine Couple by the extraordinary mercy of the Panca-Tattva. Devotees outside the Dhama should plan their lives so that they can retire early and come to stay in the spiritual world... Sridham Mayapur ki jai!! Your servant, Vrsabhanu ACTIVITIES Akhanda-nam kirtan for the recovery of His Holiness Jayapataka Swami For the speedy recovery of His Holiness Jayapataka Swami, the temple had organised and Akhanda, or non-stop kirtan in Sri Sri Radha Madhava s temple hall for Maharaja s wellbeing. In the month of August, over 590 hours of kirtan was offered for the pleasure of Their Lordships. A core team of over 50 disciples, aspiring disciples and wellwishers have volunteered to keep this service going, that is still going on to this day. On a daily basis, hundreds of devotees participate in this Akhanda kirtan. He never did one pious activity.there is nothing in his record to show that he did anything pious or transcendental. So what are you doing here? The Visnu-dutas replied, We have come to take this man back to Godhead simply be cause he had a desire to chant Hare Krsna. Moral of The Story If Namabhasa, or contaminated changing of the holy name is so powerful, just imagine the power of chanting the holy names purely. 9 9 As everyone knows for decades now Christmas has developed into one of the biggest money spinning ventures of all time. It has been so institutionalised like this that even our devotees would get into the Xmas spirit to distribute more books. Putting on Santa Klaus outfits they would take to the airports and try to stop passers by. On one such occasion, during this partying period of the year a drunk came to harass a devotee dressed as Santa. The irate drunk shouted, whilst brandishing a hand gun at the devotee, You re not Santa, your one of those Hare Krishna s... you re not Santa you re a fraud. The devotee keeping a cool head opened his Bhagavad Gita As It Is, to the verse 3:13 and showed the irate drunk. See Srila Prabhupada says here in this purport, That all the devotees are santa!...now we expect you to go to that purport right now, come on it s worth it....needless to say shastra saved the day again, and the devotee went on to distribute many of Srila Prabhupada s books Told by Brighupati dasa ACBSP in 1993, who was there at the time.( )

Efforts are being made to complete this project before Garua Purnima Srila Prabhupada s Lotus Park Historic Monument In order to mark the historical significance of the Srila Prabhupada s lotus park, certain adjustements were proposed, such as putting an arch with the name over the bench where Srila Prabhupada used to sit, MAC therefore approves that Srila Prabhupada s Lotus Park Historic Monument project is presented to the Master Plan team, and will evaluate the project based on their (MPA) feedback and proposal. Committee for Development of Sri Mayapur Dhama The MAC recommends MEB to form a committee for the development of Sri Mayapur Dhama. Vaishnava Samadhis Whereas most Vaishanva Samadhis in Vrindavan area are generally uncovered, the MAC has resolved that in order to maintain the visual sanctity of the Vaisnava samadhi area, there will be no structures, permanent or otherwise, on top of any of the Vaishnava samadhis. In addition, the Master Plan team is requested to advise on proper shade trees to protect pilgrims and pujaris from the weather. Srila Prabhupada Samadhi Division Head will ensure that the present structures are removed and that no new structures are raised
