3 Important Usage Guidelines MAHARISHI QUOTE: A photocopy of the previously published source for any Maharishi quote to be printed MUST accompany the job materials, so that the proofreader can verify accuracy. MAHARISHI S NAME WITH QUOTE : Set Maharishi s name on the last line of the text of a Maharishi quote, not beneath the quote. In every case, Maharishi s name should be preceded by a long (em) dash ( ). It may be necessary to reformat to achieve these requirements. If a year of publication is included, it should follow Maharishi s name in parenthese. MAHARISHI S FULL NAME: If using the full name Maharishi MaheshYogi, it is not necessary to include the words His Holiness before the full name in all instances, but this may be done when it seems appropriate. MAHARISHI S NAME AT THE END OF A LINE OF TEXT: Never hyphenate Maharishi s name at the end of a line of text. REFERENCE TO A GRANT OR DONATI ON: Any time a grant to the University is referred to in printed text, that reference must first be reviewed by the director of the Sponsored Programs Office. 4 after periods. Be sure to check text to eliminate double spaces. HYPHEN AND DASHES : Use a hyphen (-) for compound words and word division, and for scores (e.g., as this does not reflect a range). Use a short (en) dash ( ) for inclusive numbers, such as 8:30 9:00 p.m., and 8 9 years. Use a long (em) dash ( ) for thought separations in text, such as The Ramayana a great teaching tool is now available to all. MUM style stipulates that spaces be place on either side of an em dahs. A hyphen, not a short (en) dash, is used for number separations in telephone numbers, compound zip codes, and social security numbers. SMART QUOTES AND APOSTROPHES : Always use curved smart quotes ( ) and curved smart apostrophes ( ), never straight ones. BLACK INK SIGNATURES : Be sure to use solid black ink when the image of your signature will be scanned for use in a large printing of letters. Black ink prints much more clearly than blue ink. ELLI PSES : We do not use the ellipsis key. Instead, we type periods with spaces around them (e.g., word... word ). In the case of an ellipsis at the end of a sentence, use four periods instead of three. SPELL CHECK: Please use the spell check feature. COMMAS IN A SERIES: Place a comma before the last entry in a series (e.g., dogs, cats, and mice). ANGLE BRACKETS: Angle brackets may be used to enclose a <website> or an < address>. PHYSICS TERMS: Terms from physics that have previously been capitalized are now lower-cased. These include unified field, unified field of natural law, natural law, laws of nature, and nature. OTHER MOVEMENT TERMS NOW LOWER-CASED: Terms that have ometimes been previously capitalized, such as pure consciousness and pure intelligence, should be lower-cased (and should not be italicized unless being referred to and discussed as words). STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS: States of consciousness are considered proper names and should be capitalized. These include Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, God Consciousness, Unity Consciousness, Brahman Consciousness, and Total Knowledge (synonymous with Brahman Consciousness). GRAMMAR: University publications always use American rules for grammar, mechanics (punctuation, capitalizations, etc.), and usage. 4
