6 Sri Adi Shankara (788 AD 820 AD) Sri Adi Shankara was born in Kerala, South India. He mastered all the Vedas by the age of eight. He renounced material world at an early age and travelled all over India, seeking and imparting knowledge and engaging in spiritual and philosophical debates with followers of alternative schools of thought. He consistently won the debates with his opponents, who then chose him to be their Guru. He established Peetams (centres) in Sringeri (South), Puri (East), Dwarka (West) and Badrinath (North).He established the doctrine of Advaita (non-duality) Vedanta and was a prolific writer of commentaries on Vedas and Upanishads. Sringeri Sharada Peetam Sringeri Sharada Peetam was founded by Sri Adi Shankara, with his disciple, Sri Sureswaracharya as the first Acharya. This Peetam has an unbroken lineage of Acharyas sustaining Hindu thoughts and practices even during times of adversity and foreign occupation. The current Acharya, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Swamiji, is the 36th in line. The Peetam is located in Sringeri, along the banks of River Tunga in beautiful Western Ghats in Karnataka, India. Sringeri Vidya Bharati Foundation, Canada SVBF Canada, a charitable organization established for propagating Sanatana Dharma, was incorporated in 2005 with the acquisition of the existing Shiva temple in Etobicoke. SVBF Canada is an overseas affiliate of the Sringeri Mutt. The present Jagadguru His Holiness Bharati Teertha Swamiji, is its Chief Patron. The day-to-day affairs are conducted under the sole guidance of the Jagadguru. After acquiring the Shiva temple, SVBF Canada acquired the adjacent property and built a state-of-the art community centre there. The centre was opened in 2008 and has since been the venue for numerous religious, cultural, social, youth and wellness events conducted by the local Indo-Canadian community. Construction of the temple, based on the grand tradition and rigorous guidelines of South Indian temples including a huge Rajagopuram in the front, began in 2009 and will be completed in June The integrated Temple Complex will also house a Museum depicting the life story of Adi Shankara in beautifully carved marble panels specially commissioned from India. The entire complex will be inaugurated on June 20, 2010 by a team of priests headed by Padmashri Dr. Gowrishankar, CEO of Sringeri Mutt, and Trustees of SVBF USA & SVBF Canada. MahaKumbhabhishekam, June 2010 Kumbhabhishekam involves invoking Gods and Goddesses in water and energizing them with Vedic mantras.the Holy water is then sprinkled on the Vigrahas (statues) amidst chanting of Vedic mantras. Thus energized, Vigrahas become powerful and divine and bestow boons to all devotees offering prayers in the temple. It is said that witnessing the Kumbhabhishekam in one s lifetime bestows the greatest of boons to the devotees. Shata Chandi Maha yagna propitiating Lord Sri Chandramouliswara, Goddess Sri Durga and Sahasra Kalasa Abhishekam (1008 holy vessels containing water energized with mantras) will be performed for the murthis (gods and goddesses) of Shiva, Sharadamba, Adi Shankara, Ganapati, Durga, Hanuman, Rama, Krishna and the Navagrahas.

8 About Adi Shankaracharya Adi Shankaracharya was the first philosopher who consolidated Advaita Vedanta, one of the sub-schools of Vedanta. He believed in the greatness of the holy Vedas and was a major proponent of the same. Not only did he infuse a new life into the Vedas, but also advocated against the Vedic religious practices of ritualistic excesses. He founded four Shankaracharya Peethas in the four corners of India, which continue to promote his philosophy and teachings. The biography of Adi Shankaracharya reveals that he was also the founder of Dashanami monastic order and the Shanmata tradition of worship. Childhood of Adi Shankaracharya Adi Shankaracharya was born as Shankara in around 788 AD in a Brahmin family in Kaladi village of Kerala. He was born to Sivaguru and Aryamba a number of years after their marriage. It is said that Aryamba had a vision of Lord Shiva, in which he promised her that He would incarnate Himself in the form of her first-born child. The life history of Shankara tells us that he showed great intelligence right from his childhood. He mastered all the Vedas and the Vedanta in gurukul itself and could recite the epics and Puranas by heart. Adopting Sanyasa (Monastic Life) Shankara was attracted to sanyasa right from his childhood. One day, while bathing in the Purna River, He was attacked by a crocodile. Seeing his mother s incapability to rescue him, he asked her to give him the permission to renounce the world. Left with no other option, she agreed to it. Shankara recited the mantras of renunciation and immediately, the crocodile left him. Thus started the life of Shankara as an ascetic. He left Kerala and moved towards North India in search of a Guru. Meeting Govinda Bhagavatpada and Enlightenment On the banks of Narmada River, Shankara met Govinda Bhagavatpada. Impressed by his knowledge of the Vedas and the Vedanta, he took Shankara under his tutelage. Under the guidance of his Guru, Shankara mastered Hatha, Raja and Jnana Yoga. Thereafter he received initiation in the knowledge of Brahma. Thus was born Adi Shankaracharya, whose aim in life was to spread the Vedic teachings of the Brahma Sutras throughout the world. Adi Shankaracharya Teachings The philosophy and teachings of Adi Shankaracharya were based on the Advaita Vedanta. He preached Non-Dualism. It means that each and every person has a divine existence, which can be identified with the Supreme God. The mere thought that human being is finite with a name and form subject to earthly changes, is to be discarded. The bodies are diverse, but the soul of all the separate bodies is the same, the Divine One. 10 Sringeri Community Center The state-of-the-art community center was inaugurated on 13th Dec 2008, and since then has hosted numerous cultural, religious and social events, weddings and other functions. The facility has a large industrial kitchen facilities equipped with a big walk-in cooler, Tandoors, and automatic dish washers and everything to enable cooking for 1000 people. The kitchen is supervised by a professional chef, who operated a successful restaurant in Greater Toronto area. The food served is purely vegetarian and satvic. Cultural Events The center has hosted numerous cultural events including Musical programme by Anoop Jalota, Jagran by spritually acclaimed Narendra Chanchal, Carnatic music by South Indian artist Sudha Raghunathan, Nityashree, Violin artist M Chandrasekaran, Saxophone Kadri Gopalnath, and religious discourses by Prema Pandurang, Dr.Yegnasubramanian and Swami Shantananda of Chinmaya Mission. Veda Classes Pandit Balakrishna Sastri the priest of SVBF Canada organisation conducts Veda classes at the center. The students range from 6 yrs to 60+ yrs of age and many have completed the course under his guidance. Yoga Classes The yoga classes are conducted, each Saturday morning, free of charge, by Shri Ambika Yoga Kutir. Approximately 200 students have successfully completed the four month course since the centre was formally opened in December 2008.

11 Sringeri Vidya Bharati Foundation (SVBF) Canada Brydon Drive, Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada, M9W 4N6 Tel: Plan for Devotee Transportation for the Maha Kumbhabhishekam at SVBF Canada We expect over 5000 devotees to attend the Maha Kumbhabhishekam events on June 19, 20 and 27. Since the parking lot at SVBF will be used for some of the functions during this period, we have arranged for free parking for devotees in large parking lots not far from SVBF. Shuttle buses will be available to transport them during those days, between the parking lots and SVBF. The staging place for devotees who come to the events by car would be Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic High School on 2170 Kipling Avenue, Etobicoke M9W 4K9. Drivers would drop their passengers at the school and then drive to the designated parking lot using driving directions provided by volunteers. This school is right opposite SVBF on the East side of Brydon Dr. There will be a walkway from the school to SVBF. Passengers dropped off at the school will walk to SVBF via this walkway. Drivers will be transported to SVBF from their parking lots by Shuttle buses. Drivers and passengers will be transported back to their respective parking lots from the same school after the conclusion of the events. An alternative would be for drivers to drive to Kipling GO/TTC Parking lot, park their cars there and take TTC bus route 45 along Kipling Road North to the above school from where they could walk to SVBF. The conceptual picture below shows the map of all of the above for Parking Lot #1. SVBF website will be updated close to the Maha Kumbhabhishekam with details of all the parking lots. Please consider other alternatives also in order to save expenses for them and to save the environment: Using public transit all the way Carpooling with family or friends Using the special bus that SVBF is planning to arrange from Scarborough (Scarborough Town Centre) and Mississauga (Erin Mills Town Centre) at a price of $10.00 per return ticket. Such special buses will be arranged ONLY if there is enough number of request for tickets by May 31. One, or more, of such special buses as determined by the number of tickets requested, will leave the location at about the same time in the morning to go to SVBF and return to the same place from SVBF about one hour after Maha Prasada (lunch) or at the end of the opening ceremonies of the Adi Shankara Museum. SVBF s decision re: this service will be final.
